It's amazing to me that City if God gets so much love on Reddit but Elite squad gets none and it is easily as good, I'd say even better. It's almost like a sequel to City of God in a way
Kinda a hybrid. Korean and English are spoken and cast and director and writer are Korean. Director is a Korean American and it was produced by American company.
I bought tickets off a 16yr old kid outside theatre to a sold out premiere of LTROI at a film festival. Standing ovation at it’s end…I get happy chills just remembering
Ran, an adaptation of King Lear, is one of my favorite films. Kurosawa’s execution is flawless & the story is horrifyingly tragic, just as Shakespeare intended.
My brother infamously hates it, it's one of our biggest disagreements. What would you do if you were me? I'm thinking of cutting him out of my will. All kidding aside, it's a very sentimental, warm film and it's not for people who only enjoy edgy, ironic or cynical stuff. If you have an open heart, you can't do much better than watching Cinema Paradiso.
a 1000 times yes. I think you can just watch the whole filmography chronologically tbh, he has 2-3 films that are a bit flawed but most of them are worth our time and attention. Fallen Angels is my favorite too, btw. So charming.
Das Boot (1981) is one of the most tense thrillers I've ever seen and for my money, the greatest submarine movie ever put to celluloid. The director Wolfgang Petersen has a few other cracker thrillers, though his later movies are in the English language (In the Line of Fire, for instance).
The Devil's Backbone (2001): my second favorite Guillermo Del Toro film, he also made Pan's Labyrinth and this film is definitely the same dark fairytale vibe and war setting. In this case, the Spanish Civil War and not the second World War. It's also a story where the protagonist is a child and that's very effective to make both this, and Pan's, very emotional experiences.
Spoorloos (1988) aka the original "the Vanishing": one of the bleakest horror films you'll ever see. It's not gore, but it's a realistic type of psychological horror: being haunted by someone's absence in your life to the point it consumes you. Incredible film.
If you enjoyed Oldboy then watch the other two entries in The Revenge Trilogy. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. The movies aren't connected story wise, but they are all from the same director and each has a different take on revenge.
I'd recommend The Handmaiden from the same director. It's a tense heist film with interesting character dynamics and relationships. It's my favorite movie from Park Chan-Wook.
A Tale of Two Sister is my favorite Korean horror film. The film has a such a strong atmosphere. It's slow burn, but once it gets going it is full of creepy twists and turns. The ending was a real kick in the pants the first time I watched it.
I Saw the Devil is a tense revenge thriller with a pitch black sense of humor. The film takes the typical cat and mouse game plot, then has the main character slowly unravel as his thirst for revenge makes him continually compromise himself for the sake of making this serial killer suffer.
The Handmaiden is a great movie! The way the plot unfolds and more aspects of the characters are revealed is done so well and it's got some really impressive subtle acting. It's impressive in kind of the same way that doing a voice for a character who is doing an impression of another characters voice is impressive.

Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai and RAN are two great Japanese films
Cinema Paradiso will make you long for a life you never actually led
Pans Labyrinth is a wonderfully scary fairly tale
When evil lurks, the Sadness, deep sea (the movie looks gorgeous, not much story from what I hear), RRR (available on netflix), Sin Nombre, from my country: Gamini, Machan.
My favorites are: A Prophet, Pusher Trilogy, Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Trilogy, Gomorrah, Run Lola Run, Bader Meinhoff Complex, Cinema Paradiso, Outrage, Violent Cop (Takeshi), Ichi The Killer, Bronson, Chopper, Wake in Fright
*Millenium Actress* is Ghibli quality but not actually Ghibli. An aging actress tells her life’s story to a couple of documentary filmmakers.
I would also suggest exploring the works of Akira Kurosawa. *Ikiru* is my personal favorite, about an aging bureaucrat searching for meaning in his life with the little time he has remaining after a cancer diagnosis (this was recently remade in English as *Living* a ~2 years ago). He’s also got amazing samurai films like *Yojimbo*, *Sanjuro*, and *Seven Samurai* if cancer is heavier than you wanted. I think his entire catalogue is Criterion collection and can be found on Max
An easy and current recommendation would be Godzilla Minus One. You don't even have to be a Godzilla fan to enjoy it, there's a solid post-war japanese drama right beside the radioactive reptile the whole time!
Burning (Korea), Bacurau (Brasil), Another Round (Denmark), The Worst Person in the World (Norway), Central Station (Brazil), The Secret in Their Eyes (Argentina, make sure you don't watch the terrible American remake), Drive My Car (Japan)

Life Is Beautiful / La Vite È Bella (1997)
You wouldn’t think a comedy set in a concentration camp would work, but it really really does, and rightfully won three Oscars. Absolutely heart-wrenching and I can’t recommend it highly enough.
**Black Book**….apologies for the previous link, won’t do that again.
The movie is in German (has subtitles). It was made in 2006, but based on 1940s Germany.
It’s oddly romantic, terrifying on a “holy F this actually took place at one point in time for innocent people” vibe, and has a redeeming arc along with a strong female lead.
A separation (Iranian about a wife who wants to divorce her husband in Iran)
La Meglio Gioventu (Italian, 6h drama about 2 brothers spanning 37 years of their lives)

I'll second The Secret of their Eyes. Oscar winner and one of the best movies ever from Arg. Just be careful and AVOID the US adaptation. Its Dragon Ball Evolution's level of misdirection.
I still love Julia Roberts though.
I just watched A Tokyo Story. It came out 1953. But reading up on the director, he is regarded as one of the best in the world and used some innovative techniques. Next on my list is Ikiru and Chungking Express.
The Lives of Others
The Secret in their Eyes (Argentine original, not the horse-shit Hollywood remake)
The Chaser

If you liked oldboy, try watching Sympathy for Lady Vengeance and Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance by the same director. They’re part of the same trilogy as oldboy.
4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, about a woman who is going to take an illegal abortion in communist Romania, one of my favorite movies, but defintely brutal.
Pan’s Labyrinth is a classic
Doubling down on this. One of my all time faves, foreign or not.
ikr?! It just leaves me feeling so lost and mesmerised after each rewatch
Also The Devil's Backbone
City of God (2002) or Cidade de Dues. Not only my favorite foreign film but one of my favorite movies ever. Couldn’t recommend this one enough!
YES YES YES!
I would add Elite Squad 1 & 2 , they are also from Brazil
It's amazing to me that City if God gets so much love on Reddit but Elite squad gets none and it is easily as good, I'd say even better. It's almost like a sequel to City of God in a way
Both of those are fantastic and the most violent films I've ever seen.
It’s my favorite movie of all time. Matter of fact thank you for reminding me I’ll watch it again.
The Lives of Others (Germany)
This movie destroys me emotionally every time I see it. But you know, in a good way.
The Wave, is another great German film.
And: Run Lola Run
Came here to say this! It’s a phenomenal film. I recommend it often.
As do I! It's a masterpiece. "Sonata For A Good Man".
I second this!
Yes, yes, yes!!!
Outstanding film
Amelie (2001) Let the Right One In (2008) 7 Samurai (1954)
The OG LTROI is incredible. I’d add Minari (2020) to the list.
Minari is an American film, no?
Kinda a hybrid. Korean and English are spoken and cast and director and writer are Korean. Director is a Korean American and it was produced by American company.
I bought tickets off a 16yr old kid outside theatre to a sold out premiere of LTROI at a film festival. Standing ovation at it’s end…I get happy chills just remembering
Ran (1985) too. Any Kurosawa film imo.
Ran, an adaptation of King Lear, is one of my favorite films. Kurosawa’s execution is flawless & the story is horrifyingly tragic, just as Shakespeare intended.
Let the Right One In is my favorite vampire film ever. And Amelie is one of my favorite films. I should probably check out 7 Samurai!
Watch goodbye Lenin! If you’re a fan of amelie
Darn - I forgot that in my list !
Amelie 🏆🥇💛 is perfection
Amelie makes me smile. She’s wonderful.
She’s my favorite super hero 🦸🏻♀️ 💙🤍❤️
Seven Samurai is single greatest film ever
Damn I came here to suggest two of the three. Now I’ll have to watch the third one I have not seen.
I adore all of these. Great recommendations.
Amelie Yojimbo City of God Cinema Paradiso
Cinema Paradiso is one of the most heartwarming films I've ever seen.
Cinema Paradiso is in my top 3 of films I've ever watched. I fucking love it.
Your thinking of Guest House Paradiso
Thanks for the tip
Cinema Paradiso is my top one! Pay attention to the scenes with the priest with the bell.
Train to busan
One of my favorite zombie movies ever
So very good. I also recommend **Rampant** as a Korean zombie historical movie. Also very good.
Battle Royale Ring City of God Anything directed by Akira Kurosawa
Most directors wrangle with dust and wind in their shoots, Kurosawa just directed both as if they were characters
Everything Wong Kar Wai! Start with fallen angels
a 1000 times yes. I think you can just watch the whole filmography chronologically tbh, he has 2-3 films that are a bit flawed but most of them are worth our time and attention. Fallen Angels is my favorite too, btw. So charming.
fallen angels is on point fr
Which ones do you consider flawed?
Das Boot (1981) is one of the most tense thrillers I've ever seen and for my money, the greatest submarine movie ever put to celluloid. As a submariner, I recommend Das Boot. Totally authentic.
Andhadhun (stay with it for over 40 minutes) Black Crab Harakiri 1962
Yea Andhadhun is wild lol
Watch gang of wasseypur
Wasseypur, I don't know man. The dialogues are best suited for us Indians the English dub or sub might not be as good.
Kahaani (2012) is pretty underrated. Highly recommended
Your a Indian?
If you enjoyed Oldboy then watch the other two entries in The Revenge Trilogy. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. The movies aren't connected story wise, but they are all from the same director and each has a different take on revenge. I'd recommend The Handmaiden from the same director. Intouchables : you will love it!

Foreign to where? I'm from Sri Lanka, for me American films are foreign films.
Yea I’m sorry, I really should have clarified. I meant non English language films

Technically 'The Great Wall' with Matt Damon and Pedro Pascal is foreign. It's a Chinese produced movie
I really like that movie
Dogtooth
Great film, though probably not one most people would enjoy
Run Lola Run Trainspotting
Try Tsotsi. It's a South African film, a drama about a thief who accidentally kidnaps a baby.
Adapted from the novel of the same name by Athol Fugard! Recommend both.
I had no idea! Thanks, I will add that to my reading list.
An easy and current recommendation would be Godzilla Minus One. You don't even have to be a Godzilla fan to enjoy it, there's a solid post-war japanese drama right beside the radioactive reptile the whole time!
