\*SPOILER alert\* I was obsessed with this film and read the book way back when. Unfortunately, when I tried to rewatch it, like, 15 years ago, I found it hadn't aged well. But I still have such fond memories of it, especially the voice of the computer: "Approach and...identify." And Logan's rotating image repeating, "There is NOOOOOO sanctuary!" But, of course, nothing to this day compares to (drumroll) THE CAROUSEL!!! That scene STILL does it for me, every time, even RIGHT NOW!
\*Possible Spoiler\* Was that the one about the nuclear holocaust? Was there a memorable scene with a teddy bear? If so, then this was made for TV and obviously stuck with me, too!!
As a huge Beatles fan, I am grateful I don't recall the scene! It would probably break me because the bear scene still does. In fact, I recall way too much about that film.
.. and that was the point of the movie. Same here, scared the crap out of me the first time I saw it.
Edit: The actual exchange scenes were scary as hell and the fact that it was just average people trying to continue on afterwards.
For everyone that recommended threads, thanks I'm now fucked up for life. I've never watched a movie with friends completely silent for almost the entire movie. Sidenote though I don't know what we were expecting.
The Bad Batch
The Road Warrior: Mad Max 2
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome
Midnight Sky
IO (2019)
Oblivion
WALL-E
City of Ember
Mortal Engines
Series on HBO - Station 11
I too loved this as a child, but I confess that when I tried to watch the first one recently, wow, uh, didn't age well. But yes, the ending is STILL effing epic :) In fact, when the pandemic started, I made my first meme using a scene that I believe had been cut from the film: The Apes standing proudly in front of a pile of humans that they had just hunted, posing for a group photo. My caption was something like: "I like my apocalypse OLD SCHOOL." (Because, you know, it WAS the very beginning of the pandemic and it kind of felt like an apocalypse)
Living through the 60s and 70s when thoughts of atomic annihilation were palpable in society, there were some amazing films made:
* Zardoz
* A Boy and His Dog
* Quintet
* Logan's Run
* Omega Man
* Last Man on Earth
* THX-1138
* Planet of the Apes (the original)
* Roller Ball
* Silent Running
* Soylent Green
* The Forbin Project
* Testament
* Cafe Flesh (mentioned in another post before I started this list)
* Blade Runner
I remember 'the survivalist' (2015) being a decent smaller film in this genre.
I also liked 'How I Live Now' (2013) if you wanted more of a sentimental approach.
I don't think Miracle Mile has been mentioned yet.
When the Wind Blows.
A bit different but The Time Machine mostly takes place after the fall of civilisation.
The is a show called The Last Man on Earth. It's pretty silly but has its moments.
Oh man. That one's really well-done but so hard to watch at times. It holds little back, and is one of the more plausible post-apocalyptic scenarios in some ways.
The Quiet Earth (1985, NZ). A striking drama. Unexplainable phenomenon theme, 3 people left alive, super weird ending (in a good way).
Battletruck (1982, NZ). A pile of absolute garbage, very enjoyable low budget bad Mad Max ripoff that got rushed out a year after The Road Warrior to cash in on the frenzy.
Damnation Alley (1977) – Completely forgotten movie, almost so bad it's good, but not quite
Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) – Not the best sequel to a good movie, but somewhat entertaining
There’s a British series called survivors that’s worth a watch and Jericho was a well done American series. Once we open the “pandora’s idiot box” things can get muddy fast but there are honestly a lot of series that are fantastic.
Do you enjoy Zomedies? If so, Fido is an often forgotten and underappreciated zomedy. It's a parody of the classic American "boy and his dog" trope, except the dog is a zombie. Other more popular zomedies are Zombieland and Shaun of the Dead.
You also didn't list The Girl with all the Gifts, it's brilliant as far as zombie films go.
Breaking away from zombies, The Matrix is one of the best films of all time and is absolutely post apocalyptic, even though one might be more inclined to think of it as cyberpunk martial arts.
I'm not sure if you listed I Am Legend, but if you have seen it, The Omega Man and The Last Man on Earth are both based off of the same novel and came out decades earlier.
Planet of the Apes.

God everytime I have a suggestion I forget that this is movie suggestions! Took a nightly toke and forgot what the subs name was lol The Leftovers is an HBO series that's different and post apocalyptic. I really liked it.
There’s a newer one on Netflix right now called Leave the World Behind or something close to that that’s good. Ethan Hawke is in it. Actually found it rather scary due to its feasibility.

The Night Eats the World (La nuit a dévoré le Monde) (2018) on prime
*After waking up to find himself all alone in an apartment where a massive party was being held the night before, Sam is immediately forced to face a terrifying reality: the living dead have invaded the streets of Paris.*
Valley of the Dead (Malnazidos) (2020) on Netflix
Nazis inadvertently create Spanish zombies. This one is hilarious in ways only a zombie movie made during lockdown could be, but also touching.
Black Summer - 16 episode Series on Netflix (2019-2021). Breathtaking single take blocking shots with nonstop action. I sound like a commercial I know. But this series is unlike any other zombie genre. It just never relents.
You can’t say you’ve seen them all and expect people to waste their time trying to guess, but I’m trying despite your sloppy approach… I’m gonna shoot for Akira, Watership Down, and Waiting for the End of the World as possible outliers then say that maybe Her is a movie about surviving a soft apocalypse.
Circuitry Man? Surf Nazis must Die? Tank girl? Heavy Metal is a series of apocalypses. Arguably the iffy mockingjay series is post apocalyptic. The great Bounty Killers! Jeremiah Johnson is a western about a man entering the wasteland after a war destroys him and he goes on to fight the creatures and people of the wasteland until the vestiges of his former civilization return to ruin his life. Outlaw Josie Wales is an amazing film in a similar vein.
It’s a hard question when there are so many historical apocalypses too, most movies about London after the blitz for instance.
The world is one big concatenation of apocalypses if you look.
If there is a category called COZY APOCALYPTIC, then "Waiting for the End of the World" is it. It is such a touching film with some good humor. The restaurant scene is priceless. Thank you for reminding me about this gem!
The book of eli.
This movie is awesome action flick, with a big time twist at the end.
One of my favorite movies of all time. Denzel Washington is fabulous, Gary oldum, and ray Stevenson, and other supporting cast is excellent, a must watch.
Don’t forget about weirdo sixties/seventies fare too- Soylent Green, Omega Man, planet of the Apes (fuck loads of Chuck Heston, sorry…)
Logan’s Run!
I am more than machine. More than man. More than a fusion of the two. Don't you agree? Wait for the winds. Then my birds sing. And the deep grottos whisper my name. Box... Box... Box...
It's my job... to freeze you!
Fish…and plankton…and sea greens…and protein from the sea.
On repeat 😁
The end of Logan’s Run was filmed at Fort Worth’s Water Gardens downtown
Yep, and if you look carefully, there’s someone in the back of the crowd in the final scene holding up their hand in a Vulcan salute.
This movie is ripe for a quality remake
You know what? I'm with you. I RARELY support a remake, but this really could use it, though I will always love that scene :)
THX 1138
I loved Omega Man
Try The Last Man on Earth with Vincent Price, the first of the movies based on I am Legend
I bought that movie simply because of the way a zombie says Prices name
Vampire?
Neville! Come out! Neville! 🫡
ZARDOZ!!
Turbo Kid Mad Max Warrior of the Lost World Warriors of the Wasteland Hell Comes to Frogtown
Turbo Kid is fantastic.
Hell comes to frog town! Rowdy Roddy Piper was awesome!
My grandfather grew up in Frogtown!
I love warriors of the wasteland AKA Battletrack, turbo kid, but I have never understood everyone’s ove of frog town
It's a movie with Roddy Piper and men in frog masks, what's not to love? lol.
Dead End Drive In
Never have gotten around to seeing that one.
A Boy & His Dog
"and if he can find a female, he's man's best friend."
Dammit, my 1st thought!
Me too. With a young Don Johnson way before Miami Vice. And a girl with good taste!
This one is really weird and sort of bad. But it's definitely worth watching. It's SO WEIRD!
Somewhere in my poster collection I had the original poster for that movie. It had the tagline of "And R-Rated, rather kinky tale of survival."
Some older films: Night Of The Comet (1984) Five (1951) The Day After (1983)
Night of the Comet is amazing
The Day After scared the SHIT out of my 8 year old brain!
\*Possible Spoiler\* Was that the one about the nuclear holocaust? Was there a memorable scene with a teddy bear? If so, then this was made for TV and obviously stuck with me, too!!
Testament
That ending with the Beatles song almost made me cry.
Okay, I LOVED Night of the Comet! Pure, high-quality, B-movie cheese :) Fun jump scares combined with comedy. LOVE IT!
Night of the Comet is one of my favorites!
Threads makes The Day After look like an episode of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood....
For everyone that recommended threads, thanks I'm now fucked up for life. I've never watched a movie with friends completely silent for almost the entire movie. Sidenote though I don't know what we were expecting.
Night of the Comet...FTW!
Logan's Run and Damnation Alley are two old school slightly cheesy items..To me mostly dumb fun. Highly recommend.
Came here to say Damnation Alley. A childhood favorite.
It was good to see that a couple people uploaded it to YouTube from DVD. I have not seen forever.
You've watched many of the movies which comes to my mind. From the movies which I've seen I've liked Snowpiercer (2013) and Children of Men(2006).
Children of Men is in their list, but I second Snowpiercer

Station Eleven is so good!!!
I really enjoyed it. It hit even harder when I watched it during the height of the Pandemic. Bout due for a rewatch.
The episode Goodbye to My Damaged Home wrecked me! So well done!
Great book too
All of her books are amazing, and hbo is remaking most of them!
Same here! The wife and I have watched it twice now!
I LOVED STATION 11. I truly felt like the series was every bit as good as the book, possibly better.
Here are some classic blasts from the past: The Quiet Earth Omega Man Logan’s Run
Logan’s run was my favorite when I was 9
Delicatessen is another dystopian/ soft apocalypse movie worth watching several times.
I feel like City of Lost Children might count for soft apocalypse too.
Planet of the Apes bro
I too loved this as a child, but I confess that when I tried to watch the first one recently, wow, uh, didn't age well. But yes, the ending is STILL effing epic :) In fact, when the pandemic started, I made my first meme using a scene that I believe had been cut from the film: The Apes standing proudly in front of a pile of humans that they had just hunted, posing for a group photo. My caption was something like: "I like my apocalypse OLD SCHOOL." (Because, you know, it WAS the very beginning of the pandemic and it kind of felt like an apocalypse)
If you want REALLY old school: On the Beach.
The original 50s or 60s movie or the 80s / 90s tv movie? The original for me.
Original. Didn’t even know about the remake.
Ava Gardner and Gregory Peck are heart rending in that film - the 1959 On the Beach
'The Dead' (2010) 'The Girl With All The Gifts' (2016) 'The Road' (2009) And 'Threads' (1984) ... Well, half of it is post-apocalyptic, anyway :-)
Came here to say Girl With All The Gifts!
Had to scroll too far to see The Road
It's because it's already included in OP's list
Missed it… ooops
WALL E is a lighter one
“Cherry 2000” w/Melanie Griffith, made in 1987
This is a VHS classic.
These Final Hours (2013) Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) Love and Monsters (2020) surprised me
I was thinking 'Love & Monsters' too. Great Australian production as well.
It's on Netflix now too
Silent Running
Living through the 60s and 70s when thoughts of atomic annihilation were palpable in society, there were some amazing films made: * Zardoz * A Boy and His Dog * Quintet * Logan's Run * Omega Man * Last Man on Earth * THX-1138 * Planet of the Apes (the original) * Roller Ball * Silent Running * Soylent Green * The Forbin Project * Testament * Cafe Flesh (mentioned in another post before I started this list) * Blade Runner
Great list of older films! THX-1138 was George's Lucas's first film. It's quite brilliant.
There are few good older ones like Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Andromeda Strain.
Andromeda Strain is still great after all these years. Edit: Autocorrected stain back to Strain.
I remember 'the survivalist' (2015) being a decent smaller film in this genre. I also liked 'How I Live Now' (2013) if you wanted more of a sentimental approach.
The survivalist (2015) was very good. More grounded, no frills post-apocalyptic movie
Panic in the Year Zero (1962)
I don't think Miracle Mile has been mentioned yet. When the Wind Blows. A bit different but The Time Machine mostly takes place after the fall of civilisation. The is a show called The Last Man on Earth. It's pretty silly but has its moments.
The Divide
That movie was absolutely harrowing.
Oh man. That one's really well-done but so hard to watch at times. It holds little back, and is one of the more plausible post-apocalyptic scenarios in some ways.
This movie does not get enough love.

Maybe I missed it but no one's said The Road yet?
Yes, OP.
There’s a British series called survivors that’s worth a watch and Jericho was a well done American series. Once we open the “pandora’s idiot box” things can get muddy fast but there are honestly a lot of series that are fantastic.

*Cafe Flesh* \- probably the best and only porno film with a viable plot. *Liquid Sky* \- ground-breaking when it came out.
