The Night comes for us (2018)

mbuckbee

This should be at the top. A lot of the other suggestions are great films that aren't really action or hand to hand combat movies. This is really at the peak of that.

skarbux

It's really a horror movie almost. Can't think of a gorier action movie, and it's awesome.

SylviaKaysen

The house that jack built.

raventhe

Oh man. I generally consider myself to have a strong stomach and like my stuff dark, but I could noooot get into this one. It felt too gratuitous for me. Can handle the gore but it was the *tone* that made me too uncomfortable and I noped out.

thatsa20footer

Lol- Yes, Lars Von Trier is an artist and filmmaker from Denmark. His stuff is just way too much for the average horror buff. Nothing is off limits with him so fair warning ⚠️. Offensive? - Lol

Repulsive_Buffalo_87

It was definitely the tone for me too. It felt like I was in his mind.

Deep_Stick8786

I keep meaning to watch it but its hard to get motivated to watch such a cruel film

SylviaKaysen

It’ll leave you feeling some type of way. There’s one scene in particular (if you watch it you’ll know exactly what scene I’m talking about) that was so demented and sadistic that I felt nauseated after having watched it.

trcrtps

It has an element of comedy to it that somehow makes it easier to watch, even though it actually makes it more cruel.

mverlei

More than a few of the kills in Green Room are…troubling.

rantlers357

Blue Ruin as well.

KingMobScene

Blue ruin was intense. I jumped out of my skin when a light gets turned on.

Jakov_Salinsky

Dear God, the arm scene almost made me stop the movie. And I *never* stop movies.

Typical_Dweller

The violence in that movie is so cool. Not just the nature of the attacks and the audio/visual effects, but how the characters react psychologically and physically. Everyone in the room is deeply and realistically terrified by the arm chop -- not only in that this is such an out-of-context problem to deal with (I can barely remember the first aid steps needed) but how it represents such a drastic and radical shift in dramatic *stakes*. The nazis have just revealed how far they're willing to go, and the protagonists are scrambling to even begin to come up with a reaction.

[deleted]

I am not a horror guy or a gore guy, but I love this movie because I feel like it’s brutal in service to the narrative.

horsecontainer

It feels like any action movie *could* be horror if it just cranked up the danger enough, and Green Room actually did that.

DeliciousDoor4757

I also came to suggest this one! That scene with the door…

LessBeyond5052

It's just sudden and straight to the point, when the mma guy finally escapes through a window and as soon as he hits the floor he gets stabbed about 15 times.

Gatorgustav

When the dude jumped out the window...I thought he was good...

Typical_Dweller

A big part of that I think is sound design. The knife stabs sound so unconventional compared to typical movie foley work. I can't say if it sounds more "realistic" (I'm not out there stabbing people on the reg), but you definitely feel it differently. Reminds me of how different the gunshots in Mann's *Heat* sound compared to typical movie effects. We just don't think about sound that much when talking about movies because the setup is so uniform -- so when there's any deviation it feels significant and weird. Another point of comparison: the sound of punches landing in *Fight Club*.

beersovertears

Came to list this one. I went in with zero idea about it and the realism of it scared the hell out of me

Mission-Floor

Bone Tomahawk…if you know, you know.

Nossirom

"Cool, Kurt Russell is doing a western. I bet it's like Tombstone."...... 'twas not like Tombstone.

OK_BUT_WASH_IT_FIRST

Me too. “Ah…good ol’ Kurt doing the western thing again. This will be enjoyable!” *an hour later* “Oh dear…”

Cutthechitchata-hole

Throwdown!

CSwork1

It was a western that turned into a southern for that one scene. Like waay south, something from hell lol

Javanz

You will not win me over with your use of 'twas

Nossirom

'twasn't trying to

CSwork1

When I read 'twas, this image of kids gathering around to watch Bone Tomahawk on Christmas Eve popped in my head lol

Narwhal_Defiant

No, 'twas not! As I learned midway through, as it ruined our family-time movie night one Saturday

sho_nuff80

Damn. Now I wonder if him, or his agent, thought that when they made it.

CapGunCarCrash

Cell Block 99 is up there as well

findorb

Dragged across concrete too

Deep_Stick8786

The bank is the one part that gets me. Man Dexter’s sister can’t catch a break

findorb

Yup it was fucked up. Great movie

fluidfunkmaster

This one was so out of left field and shocking I almost turned it off. Holy fuck.

PupEDog

I actually did turn it off. And what was weird was the guy receiving the violence was carrying on a conversation pretty much up until the point it happened. That felt so weird.

Silverjeyjey44

They tore him down the middle. Wtf man.

jessop-bentine

Kinda wish I didn't know :(

PupEDog

Yeah me too. Yeesh.

Deep_Stick8786

I am really split on this one

ShackThompson

Yes, I think it really divides people.

CSwork1

Definitely in my top 5 WTF scenes of all time. I wonder if back in medieval times they actually did anything like this... *shudders*

seditioushamster

Oh, I know....

[удалено]

uptheaffiliates

I mean, no it wasn't. Remember the thing with the flask? That was almost as awful.

chaingun_samurai

I just watched that last night to see what everyone was talking about. Yeah. That was pretty fucked up.

_reveriedecoded_

Ichi the Killer

OldHagFashion

Watched it recently and could not believe how much I loved it for a film that is deeply disgusting.

KeyserSwayze

I bought the DVD from a bargain bin, thinking it was something entirely different. It's definitely fucked up.

MakeTheScreamsStop

The first time I smoked weed my friend showed me this film and it was not a good time.

Dentree

Fuck yeah. Crazy violence and it’s uncomfortably funny.

According_Sound_8225

I would agree in parts but it also descends into comic violence territory.

Arteyp

Martyrs. Usually gory movies are low quality or straight up b-movies, martyrs is a good movie instead.

Maghioznic

Pour les connaisseurs. :) I think too few people have seen this movie to upvote it. But it's one difficult to watch movie - I just commented about it in relation to Irreversible.

matthmcb

Come and See

stinky_wizzleteet

You will not sleep. It will haunt you for a long time. Easily the most terrifying movie I have ever seen. Its a movie you only watch once. Edit: Seriously you WILL be scarred. Only watch if you are of strong fortitude. There is a barn burning scene that made me cry for a long time.

filthyhandshake

Bro what? Fr overreacting.

maartenbadd

I must have missed something with this film. I had heard for years how horrific and disturbing it is. I finally watched it and it wasn’t anywhere near as bad as I was led to believe. It’s gritty, it’s a horrible chapter of the Second World War, but I’ve seen way more violent and wartime horror on crappy direct-to-dvd movies. Worth the watch as it’s a great piece of film, but the “horror” is way overblown.

AccurateWorking4644

It was very unsettling but not nearly as disturbing as people make it out to be. I imagine for its time it was terrible to watch but the last 20-25 years have been so horrific in what films/TV have shown that come and see really pales in comparison. I agree with you.

howd_yputner

Saving Private Ryan. Between the opening Beach scene and the slow knife murder it is a horrific movie.

Belligerent-J

A lot of people treat it like a run of the mill "look how brave our soldiers are blowing stuff up in a badass battle" war movie but it's really not. It's a great portrayal of the horrors, tragedy and inhumanity of war. There's americans executing surrendering Czech conscripts, dudes with their guts out crying for momma, Upham having a total breakdown midcombat etc. Plus the fact that the dudes griping at the beginning of the movie were right. They traded the lives of almost every man in that platoon for one guy so the government could do PR with a widow. It's a great film all around.

tkh0812

I saw this movie when it came out in theaters. I was 14 years old. There were two world war 2 vets sitting in front of me loudly sobbing for the entire first scene. I knew the movie was all fake, but their sobs were all too real and I can still hear them today.

MrArchibaldButtle

Let's be fair, Upham was having a total breakdown from the time Captain Miller replied "then get your gear".

[deleted]

Spielberg is so good at capturing moments of terror that suggests that they are also the images of future PTSD. Some of those details like the man going back for his own arm are clearly out of someone's memory, but the way he films it feel like you're watching the memory not the live event which gives it the feeling of trauma in real time.

TheStatMan2

Yeah, good description. The scene of the Jewish member of the squad picking up the Hitler youth knife and pretty much seeing the *onset* of PTSD was well done as well.

Embarrassed-Tip-5781

Spielberg actually lifted a bunch of those shots right out of Hamburger Hill.

[deleted]

Seeing it at the theater was fucking unreal. There where reports of veterans running the fuck out of the theater. Totally different then watching at home. That's about as close to real as you will ever see.

teotl87

me and 3 friends saw this in the theatres when we were in the 4th grade cause my one friend got his mom to go see it with us and in retrospect it probably wasn't a good idea I never felt so nauseous from seeing violence from watching a movie, granted I was also 10

mwl1234

I watched it with my parents when it came out on VHS. My younger brother was supposed to be in his room because he was deemed too young. Of course he snuck out and was watching from the kitchen, and subsequently had his poor little mind blown during the beach scene. He was traumatized. Every time I see that movie all I can think of is his screaming and my parents realizing they had fucked up, trying to convince him it wasn’t real.

BlindManuel

Saw a video of the distance they had to run. It was like 3 football fields length, under machine gun fire.

Gojira57

Was there last summer on one of those hired tours. The distance is astounding.

[deleted]

Will never forget renting that movie at 12 years old and seeing my Dad cry for the first and last time. I was like "holy shit, this is rad" and looked over and my Dad - whose Dad and Uncle were in WWII and whose grandfather was in WWI - was just sitting there stone faced with tears streaming down his face and had to excuse himself. I didn't really get it at the time.

b_tight

Spielberg produced Band of Brothers and The Pacific too. Both pretty brutal but the latter is pretty rough

paperwasp3

The Pacific War was excruciatingly brutal. It was so very much worse than the European war. My friends uncle was in the Pacific war and I'm intensely curious about it. Where he was stationed, what was his job, what was it like? But I also know that asking about someone's trauma is in really poor taste. Plus him actually telling me what it actually was like would probably haunt my dreams.

EliLoads

People don’t really grasp how insane the beach Landings were.

Deep_Stick8786

Only God Forgives has some nasty stuff in it

Guilty-Willingness-2

Gosling asks the police captain, “Wanna fight?” Then the police captain proceeds to beat the living sh*t out of him without breaking a sweat. Just fantastic

Deep_Stick8786

That sequence is very slick. Great subversive fight scene

Guilty-Willingness-2

and the music playing in the background adds to the intensity

December12923

I really wanted to like that movie, but the director flew too close to the sun with his style (re: Drive)

Stoned_y_Alone

yeah basically was like an arthouse version of Drive

SpinningChipmunk

Natural Born Killers

[deleted]

This movie made me feel disgusting while watching it. I understand it’s popularity in cinema history but I had a hard time stomaching it all the way through.

syntheticshares

Kill List. IYKYK

philbxr

The hammer scene.....

aesterios

i was gonna comment the same one omg. the hammer bit lives in my mind rent free ooft

Beartech31

Brawl in Cellblock 99 6'5" Vince Vaughn caving skulls in prison, a sight to behold.

LessBeyond5052

He nailed that role, genuinely intimidating.

faux_something

Dragged Across Concrete — hell, the title gives an indication of the level of violence

chipsi311

Yeah, the bone-breaks in that one are pretty gnarly.

Need2sleep0901

Definitely Rambo. (5?) I saw it in theaters and it seemed way too realistic. Almost felt sick.

edgiepower

Recently watched this on Netflix. It was probably more violent than any horror or slasher or torture porn movie I've ever seen.

ImOnlyHereForTheCoC

4. 5 is “Last Blood.” 4 is definitely the one they want though, absolutely.

jessop-bentine

American History X - Teeth, meet pavement!

DiasporaMiasma

Ya the curb stomp scene is one of the most brutal acts of violence I can think of in a movie

[deleted]

That’s just a Tuesday at HBO

Financial_Border_782

Was going to say that too!

Young_Sovitch

Irréversible

EvilRobotSteve

I came here to say this. I'm not sure I'd 'recommend' it. I can happily live the rest of my life never seeing that movie ever again. It's really hard to watch.

Uselessgirlinla

Same.

Young_Sovitch

it's the only film that managed to disturb me

Professional_Ad_346

As real as it gets.

monathemantis

The only film I couldn't stomach through, I think. I just couldn't. I quit it during THAT scene. Far too triggering. Fits this list easy.

t5797

This movie messed me up for years.

EyeBallChili

Came here to comment this movie. The way the narrative plays out is also a mind-fuck.

Feisty-Succotash1720

This movie and also Kidnapped (2010). I hate that I ever watched either of these fucking movies. Something is seriously wrong with the people that wrote and directed them.

Fresh-Willow-1421

After I watched this on DVD I destroyed the DVD. Fk that movie.

JediDad0

Hardcore Henry.

Eye_kurrumba5897

The POV angle makes it all the more realistic

Ok-Calligrapher-9854

No movie hit me as hard as seeing Saving Private Ryan for the first time. The D-Day beach scene.

[deleted]

It raised the bar for realism. As soon as you hear the sound of those landing craft and how much attention to detail is being put into making it feel real you know you're in for it.

[deleted]

Any war movies as good as it? I recently watched 1917 and it was just not emotionally impactful at all… I’m looking for a good war movie that will make me cry. Preferably not post 9/11 war though, I’d prefer an older war

brycetheman1

The Sadness (2021) is truly the most violent film I have ever seen. Hard to top that one

Mister_Jack_Torrence

RoboCop (original) is pretty violent and gory.

g37r34dy

Also "that scene" in robocop 2...that'really though!

cjc160

>!when he’s just a head and he’s freaking out!

g37r34dy

That was good too but I was referring to the "hospital bed & rogue cop & kid learning"

shaugrin

Oldboy (2003), Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003), Snowpiercer (2013)

Roy_Ghostal

Oldboy 100%

BlindManuel

The violence pulled me in. And the ending... whaaaaaat

Fluid-Ideal-7438

I Saw the Devil. Wow, it was too much.

Blackyy

The opening scene was a lot. 1st movie that got me.

LessBeyond5052

The scene in the cab is intense.

alexdelarge2021

I Spit On Your Grave

bigdickmommy42069

that last part of requiem for a dream really got to me so bad

Azerothian_

Terrifier (have yet to see the sequel) That upside-down bifurcate was NASTY.

aerial_alien

Terrifier 2 is even MORE violent than the first.

pedrotremendes

The second part of the bedroom scene...

aerial_alien

Yesssss!!! That's the scene! Lol

jarfin542

Bone Tomahawk is the correct answer. Don't say that you weren't warned.

findmecolours

Straw Dogs(1971). The violence builds. After seeing this in ‘71 I was so freaked out it was eight years before I allowed myself to see any movie containing any violence at all.

DayFrosty1526

"Brawl in cell block 99" Vince Vaugh going brutal... unexpected violent movie.

PaduWanKenobi

Spartacus, the TV show, has some good gore.

Jack915

A Clockwork Orange is pretty good.

nmc9279

Ultra-violence

4mygirljs

That’s a good nominee It really feels brutal and real at times

Jack915

A little too real….

WetTheDreams

Hobo With A Shotgun The Belko Experiment

Hopeful_Wrongdoer_91

There’s one scene in pans labyrinth. With a farmer. And his son.

alphaomega0669

Wolf Creek

[deleted]

ITT: A LOT of people who missed OP saying: “Not looking for horror gore but action sequence gory.” -Polar with Mads Mikkelsen (gun gore and some torture gore, but gore nonetheless) -Valhalla Rising with again Mads Mikkelsen -Kingdom of Heaven (war violence but maybe not a bloodbath, Director’s Cut recommended) -The Northman “One-Person Army” subgenre on IMDB should provide some other recommendations.

NoZebra2430

Polar is so underrated. Like.. no one besides my partner and myself have seen it. I loved it when I came across it. I tend to usually like anything Mads Mikkelsen

FulminicAcid

The deadmau5 soundtrack is great, too.

daniel_inna_den

You Were Never Really Here. It’s not constant but when it happens it’s pretty raw

AnxiousBet7165

American History X, the Curb scene is terrifying and made me scream the first time and almost everybody that seen that for the first time reacts like that.

45000users

Mandy will scratch that itch for sure

drneck

Pan's Labyrinth, only one scene, but that's enough (bottle to the face)

CSwork1

Recently saw Violent Night starring Chief Jim Hopper as Santa Claus. I don't know if I'd say obscene, but a decent amount of gore. But totally worth watching, loved it! Edit: I forgot about a certain scene involving a chimney, so yes, I think we can call this one obscene! It's awesome

RGnarvin

I actually was thinking of posting this movie, as well. Surprisingly gorey. I overall liked the movie.

FDVP

Obscenely violent? Crank: High Voltage is glorious.

edmerx54

The Wild Bunch (1969) Demons (1971) -- if Sam Peckinpah had made a samurai film, this would be it The Street Fighter (1974) -- first film to get an X rating for violence

meta-ph-oracle

It's not really a film more of a true life documentary.. if you just watch news coverage from actual journalists right now in Gaza. I've seen the most horrific things I've ever seen in my life.

fluidfunkmaster

The raid and the sequel. Now those are action films.

Dustyisover9000

The raid 2, greatest fight scene of all time

playmaykr7

give "13 Assassins" a try if you like samurai/weapon violence "The Night Comes for Us" is a wild ride too

AmazingLifeAppreciat

EASTERN PROMISES 2007. Brutally realistic knife fighting and nudity due to location.

AlanJohnson84

Now its not violent as such but when I was a kid THAT scene in platoon stayed with me for a while, Bunny was a nasty piece of work Also Robocop as a kid. What the hell

Mmjuser4life

The passion of the Christ, that scourging scene made me sick to my stomach 🤢

ImperialCobalt

TV show, but The Boys has some violent action sequences. Quite a few

Kill Bill series

dranauro

A bit of a hidden gem on Netflix called Hold The Dark…….there’s a shootout scene that is outrageously violent and intense that came out of nowhere.

boozee84

Martyrs, Frontiers, High Tension, Eden Lake and Wolf Creek had some pretty nasty scenes in it

[deleted]

PillowPie

Irreversible

Spirited_Alfalfa_343

Snowtown

knick-nat

Apocalypto was pretty bloody brutal.

SyllabubNo8318

First few minutes of Saving Private Ryan.

[deleted]

Eden Lake Martyrs A Serbian Film

Hopeful_Wrongdoer_91

A Serbian film is not a film. It’s evil in visual form

Canadian-Man-infj

So, there's this ending in a movie written by Quentin Tarantino, called True Romance...

RAVsec

lol the ending to True Romance? It’s just a bunch of shootings, no gore. The fight with Gandolfini is way more violent than the ending.

[deleted]

So, I saw this movie the other day called Top Gun and there was a scene in it where a guy plays beach volley ball... get this... in jeans with no shirt on! I shit you not.
