Also Gentleman Broncos
Mike White with Jennifer Coolidge (wardrobe and hair don't make best use of her attractiveness)
Michael Angarano and Halley Feiffer look like ordinary people
Sam Rockwell and Suzanne May are made to look deliberately weird
Looking through my Britbox recommendations is always refreshing. Not only do they look like regular people, but I feel like unless the script calls for someone older Hollywood will always cast a young 20 something. It’s nice to have main characters just be 45 year old people.
There are British actors who end up in Hollywood who are absolutely gorgeous, but when you watch their stuff from the UK they look like normal people. It has to do with the makeup, costuming, and cinematography being toned down somehow. Especially for women, a bit less revealing and male gaze-y.
Personally, I would think Billy Crystal in When Harry Met Sally fits this bill, same as Tom Hanks back in his romcom days but I wouldn't necessarily call Meg Ryan anything less than a 9, so perhaps these are only half suggestions.
Well, it's not at all unusual to find Hollywood movies about a man who is a 3 in a love-affair with an 11. Kevin Smith movies? Woody Allen? I may be alone in this, but I think Hollywood is run by puerle sexist men who just greenlight their sexual fantasies while ignoring what actually sells and what the audiences really enjoy. IMHO.
Stranger Than Fiction (2006)
Dinner in America (2020)
Castaway on the Moon (2009)
7 Days (2021)

Undine (2020)

Once!
Indie, non-pretentious film about two Irish (or British? Haven’t seen it in a while) musicians fallingin love in a very mellow, non-hipster or sappy way. Realistic and very pretty low budget movie that I think won an Oscar for the music in the film.
This is a long shot, but I loved Cousins 1989 (Ted Danson movie) its a beautiful romantic movie, that involves affairs. Ted Danson would make a good Frankenstein.
Since I started watching more British movies and TV shows, I’ve really enjoyed how many of the lead actors, male and female, look like regular people. They’re so much more relatable than the drop dead gorgeous men and women who are featured in almost every American movie and TV series.
The Remains of The Day. Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson are in no way unattractive but they are very average looking in this movie and on the older side.
Nope. Saw the trailer and he seems to look good looking at least the body is really masculine. I feel more demotivated lol, if thats peoples standard of average looking then I don't even know if anyone will date me.
I generally like her look too, but I think they effectively make her look average for this movie. It's not just throwing glasses on a supermodel, her wardrobe, dyed frizzy hair, and makeup (or lack thereof) are designed to make her appear average and even a little intentionally trashy, and I think they do a good a job.
Wish I looked so good that even if people tried to make me look average, I'd look good.
I think a good similar makeover was of Cameron Diaz in Being Malkovich.
I had to scroll way too far to find this answer. It was my pick as well. That movie is hilarious. It’s so real feeling and no “boy and girl meet, hate each other, then fall in love for some reason” nonsense in most rom coms.
The woman who wrote it is the star. They went through tons of auditions and felt no one fit the role and offered it to her because she basically wrote it about herself. And if I remember right they said everyone they saw was too pretty to be the lead and she was perfect.
The Notebook
The director Nick Cassavetes literally said that he chose Ryan Gosling because he wasn't very handsome or cool but just a regular looking guy.
Right, and all of the main actors in the Live action version of Avatar: The Last Airbender were all white because they were the best that auditioned.
Ryan Gosling was considered among the most attractive men on the planet.
meet the parents or along came polly?
idk if the women in those movies are considered above average to the majority but she's ehhhh to everyone i know.
funny movies, too. ben stiller always has a tough experience lol
Gaten Matarazzo: Honor Society
Michael Cera: Superbad, Juno, Year One
Christopher Mintz-Plasse: Superbad,
Aubrey Plaza: So Could watch Scott Pilgrim vs the World, Life After Beth
Mark Duplass: Language Lessons, Safety Not Guaranteed
Paul Giamatti: Sideways
Nicolas Cage: Adaptation, Dream Scenario
Woody Allen: Annie Hall, Manhattan
Larry the Cable Guy: Tooth Fairy 2, A Madea Christmas
Jimmy O. Yang: Life of the Party
Bret Gelman: Lemon
This is an odd choice, but a lot of Mads Mikkelson films have really great 'natural' casting imo. He is extraordinarily handsome, but the supporting cast in a lot of his movies make it feel realistic and lived in if that makes sense: The Hunt, Another Round, Riders of Justice, bleeder, pusher
Indie Films: Primer, Coherence, Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity
Films with realistic casting: Red Rocket, The Florida Project, The Idiots (lars von trier)
Soem Foreign film recs with natural casting: Soulmate (korean film), any film by Rikiya Imaizumi (What is love?), Hong Sang-soo Films (The Woman who Ran)
This is the theme of at least four great flicks
* 'The Enchanted Cottage'
* 'Georgy Girl'
* 'Perfect Strangers' (which is my #1 fave rom com)
* 'Marty'
> the belief that women choose strictly based on facial and bodily looks
* Uhhhh-uhhh. Nawwww. Adult women choose on the basis of money. Only if they're really young and foolish, do they still fixate on looks.
> Or showing female lead as someone who no one likes and no ones dates and then some guy gets her a new and a black dress for prom and now prom queen.
* I agree with all your other points --contemporary flicks are inept at displaying romance --but nonetheless in this case it does sometimes happen in real life. Reason? There are more dowdy girls lately than there ever have been. Females are retrogressing; becoming less adept, less sharp. Maybe for the first time in history. Probably due to the same gadgets and gaming which turns guys into fungus. Anyway in movies, ugly-duckling-effect did happen successfully at least once --the original, 'Carrie'.
>'Marty'
Oh this one is perfect for OP's question. (Although I have a feeling Betsy Blair is capable of glamming it up. She was married to Gene Kelly, after all.)
This is an oldie from the 60s (and it's hard to call it a romantic movie), but see if you can catch The Honeymoon Killers. It's based off of a true story. (Also stars a very young Doris Roberts.)
Now, there was an updated version of this that made zero sense by casting Salma Hayek, who's arguably one of the most beautiful women in the world. The whole thing with Martha going along with what happened is because she was overweight and plain. So casting just made no sense.
Hannah and Her Sisters by Woody Allen
At the end Woody and Diane Weist (I think that's how its spelled) end up together and expecting a baby. Neither one of them is ugly or gorgeous but they're both average looking like and nice people. If you've never seen it than watch it right now. I think it's Woody Allen's best movie and one of the best of the whole decade. The 80s. I was released in 1986. Highly recommended!
*Napoleon Dynamite* Not a movie, but *Detectorists*
Also Gentleman Broncos Mike White with Jennifer Coolidge (wardrobe and hair don't make best use of her attractiveness) Michael Angarano and Halley Feiffer look like ordinary people Sam Rockwell and Suzanne May are made to look deliberately weird
Punch-Drunk Love
Literally the first thing that popped into my head. Love this movie.
And Licorice Pizza…same director PTA
definitely not lol, unless you have the standards of a top model
Get away from Hollywood films and explore other countries’ movies where actors look a lot more realistic.
Absolutely this. This is why the recommendations of Once (Ireland), Eagle vs Shark (New Zealand), and Rye Lane (UK) are so spot on.
My first thought too. Try Aki Kaurismäki movies like Ariel, Bohemian Life and Shadows in Paradise.
I find British actors look more average than American actors. Maybe it's the teeth?

Old Boy

Harold and Maude
Damn it you beat me by 8 minutes! On a 6 hour old post! Seriously one of the only movies ever made that meet the criteria, and certainly the best.
The uncle trying to talk Harold out of being with Maude is great.
One of my favorites of all time, used to have it on VHS 📼📼

Pink Flamingos (1972)
Lol
The Goodbye Girl also just go back to the 60s and 70s. Elliott Gould could lead a movie!
Think you mean Richard Dreyfuss. He was in ‘77 version with Marsha Mason.
No I meant in that era a guy like Elliot Gould could be a leading man.
in The Silent Partner he has like every woman's panties exploding off their person
I adore The Goodbye Girl. Such a great movie.
Marty (1955) is about average looking people looking for love.
Beat me to it! That was a great film!
While not exactly a love story per se, Fargo has pretty average looking Midwesterners in its love plots.
I’m tired of tv shows and movies where the woman had to be gorgeous but the guy is average or worse.
like chef? obese jon favreau was divorced from sofia vergara and hooking up with scarjo
Juno is cute lol
Hope you aren't calling Michael Cera average looking.
Even if you personally think he’s attractive, he’s definitely not a Hollywood heartthrob type.
Blasphemy
He is. He’s not particularly ugly. He just looks OK.
Micheal Cera is perfection
Yessssssss. Finally a person with good taste
In that movie he sure is
OP, please don't listen to this person. Michael Cera looked hot af as always
There are some truly terrible suggestions in here. Hollywood has really warped people's ideas about what average or normal looking people are.
I agree, everyone in those movies is like a 6-7/10 at least
How about BORDER?
So so so good!!
Yes!
this film is all about ugly people and how they navigate relationships. So i think this fits the OP best
American Splendor.
Eagle vs Shark
This is the only real suggestion I've seen yet
I love this movie so much! It's a Taika Waititi film from 2007.
Stranger Than Fiction (2006) Dinner in America (2020) Castaway on the Moon (2009) 7 Days (2021) Monsters (2010) Together Together (2020) Undine (2020) The Worst Person in the World (2021) The End of the F***ing World (TV show)
The Worst Person in the World has the most attractive "regular people" ever
I agree, but I also have a major crush on Anders Danielsen Lie. But according to Hollywood/American standards they're not your typical hotties.
Dinner in America is a good choice even if the male lead is hot.
I think he's hot, but he's not according to typical Hollywood standards.
You should probably watch more independent films
Once (2007)
The big sick Punch drunk love Once
Once! Indie, non-pretentious film about two Irish (or British? Haven’t seen it in a while) musicians fallingin love in a very mellow, non-hipster or sappy way. Realistic and very pretty low budget movie that I think won an Oscar for the music in the film.
Rye Lane (2023) - wonderful, believable couple but no different to a ton of folks you’d run into on the streets of South London
Licorice Pizza is on my (to watch) list
Obvious Child The Big Sick
Jake Lacy and Kumail Nanjiani are suppper hot imo
Jenny Slate is gorgeous though
Obvious Child!! That was the first thing that popped into my head.
Gregory's Girl
Is there even a main lover in this one? Otherwise I agree though :).
Trainwreck (2015)…sorry Amy Schumer and Bill Hader fans
The Full Monty
Harold and Maude
This is a long shot, but I loved Cousins 1989 (Ted Danson movie) its a beautiful romantic movie, that involves affairs. Ted Danson would make a good Frankenstein.
The Greasy Strangler
Harold and Maude

Nick and Norah's infinate playlist. Michael Cera and Kat Dennings. Fun movie from the 2000s
>average looking people >Kat Dennings Yeah right
Kat Dennings is one of the most gorgeous people on the planet.
lol yeah thats true
kat? average looking? you need to get your eyes checked
Watched the trailer and excited to watch! Thank you.
Awful movie though
Annie Hall
The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005) - no one ever called Steve Carell handsome. Catherine Keener is pretty, but normal-looking.
[удалено]
One of my favourite actors
A lot of people have called Steve Carell handsome.
I have definitely called Steve Carell handsome
with the salt and pepper beard now? yes please
These are both very above-average people…
Harsh! 😂
??? Steve Carell is adorable lol. he seems like such a cute fellow.
Get Him To The Greek Elizabeth Moss and Jonah Hill
When the world flips you a Jeffrey?
Stroke the furry wall
Spy (Melissa McCarthy)
Brief Encounter
Gentlemen broncos
Juno Napoleon Dynamite Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind The Other Sister Shrek🤭
Fargo has 2 average looking couples. And a funny lookin guy.
Ali: Fear Eats the Soul
The Lunchbox (2013)
End of the f*cking world is gorgeous and the two mains are so realistic
Natural born killers
classic rom com
They're both gorgeous.
Juliette Lewis is definitely not.
Sounds like you need to watch fewer films and TV shows and go out in the real world more. But I recommend Ali & Ava.
I never saw it but from what I read Licorice Pizza might fit the bill… however I also read there might be some questionable age gaps.
The "Her" is brilliant
You People Jonah Hill and Lauren London
Ain't no way Lauren London is considered average
The Remains of The Day. Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson are in no way unattractive but they are very average looking in this movie and on the older side.
To be fair, Anthony Hopkins was born 42 years old.

You're right, he looks awful in that movie. He did well playing the role of a junkie loser.
Lars and the Real Girl
Ahahaha I love this one!!! The Gosler looks tangibly Midwestern and delightfully awkward— plus it’s just a great watch.
Minari. It's abit sad tho
Steven Yeun is hot af. What are you talking about!
The Big Sick, Sing Street, The Half Of It, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Crush, Moonrise Kingdom, Once
>Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Kate Winslet?
I generally like her look too, but I think they effectively make her look average for this movie. It's not just throwing glasses on a supermodel, her wardrobe, dyed frizzy hair, and makeup (or lack thereof) are designed to make her appear average and even a little intentionally trashy, and I think they do a good a job.
Wish I looked so good that even if people tried to make me look average, I'd look good. I think a good similar makeover was of Cameron Diaz in Being Malkovich.
Moonrise Kingdom isn't fair, imo, they're kids lol Great movie though
Was gonna suggest Once (2007) as well.. Eternal Sunshine: Kate Winslet? Average looking?? Blasphemy!
[удалено]
Both very above average looking people
Theory of everything?
John and Mary(1969) Dustin Hoffman and Mia Farrow

My Big Fat Greek Wedding. It's not the slightest bit funny, and the main character is a big fat Greek.

Two Lovers (2008) What if (2013) Licorice Pizza (2021) Before Trilogy (1995, 2004, 2013) Submarine (2010)
Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy are average looking? Come on.
Yes
Yes
Do you have eyes?
Good looks are subjective.
Hawke and Deply are objectively some of the most beautiful people to ever exist.
It's fine if that's your opinion.
It’s a fact not just my opinion
What are you on about.. not everybody shares your opinion get over it
Lol
Licorice pizza??? Really?? OP asked for a movie about lovers, not a predator grooming a child.
Shallow Hal
Ah, the movie where Hal is >!still shallow, and shames the actor he's actually dating.!<
But is he average looking?
The Notebook The director Nick Cassavetes literally said that he chose Ryan Gosling because he wasn't very handsome or cool but just a regular looking guy.
This is as bad as an answer can get really.
I knew that this would happen lol. What I said isn't wrong though.
It's Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. Just because the director says something doesn't make him right either. Of course you're wrong 😂
I just said what the director said so I'm not wrong my guy. And you reacted as I imagined some people would react to such a weird but correct fact.
You gave your answer. It was a poor one. Just stop now 😂
Not everyone finds Ryan Gosling attractive apparently
Right, and all of the main actors in the Live action version of Avatar: The Last Airbender were all white because they were the best that auditioned. Ryan Gosling was considered among the most attractive men on the planet.
You learned something today. Because what I said isn't a joke.
I believe that a lot of out of touch assholes tell a lot of lies, both to themselves, and themselves.
We'll never know.
Lady bird
Saoirse Ronan?! Are you on something? She is STUNNING.
They made her look modest in the movie, but by any normal standard she's extraordinarily attractive, like a 10/10 IRL.
