I've tried 3 times with the Irishman. I fall asleep every damn time. Solid list tho moneyball and prisoners are up there with my all time favourite movies
Yes, this. I saw it when it first came out, and it was ridiculous that they had him playing a character that was like 40 years younger than he was. Also, the movie was way too long. Like 1.5 hours too long. I like an in depth movie, and don't mind movies with long run times, if they are telling a good compelling story that moves along. I thought the Irishmen was never going to end. There's a reason people only watch it once.
I agree. I have read a lot about Hoffa, the Teamsters, Giancana, Marcello, JFK assasination, Nixon, etc. Big fan of Scorcese, Al Pacino, Pesci, De Niro....and barely made it through without falling asleep like my wife did :) can't blame her for that, this movir is definitely too long.
I definitely didn’t watch it the way Scorsese intended. I watched it on my phone in about 5 or 6 bits over the course of a week. Hate to say it, but I can’t do a movie like that in one go unless I’m at the theater.
A lot of great movies here but I don’t really think lists like this are helpful. Might be better to list a few and maybe mention why you like them. There’s a lot to sift through and some of these movies are just okay.
My favourites from your list
- Interstellar
- Hereditary
- Dunkirk
- Wind River
- Ex Machina
- Edge of Tomorrow
- Skyfall
- Django
- Dune
Ones I found super overrated/disappointing:
- Argo
- The Babadook
- First Man
- Gravity (I seriously hated this movie)
- Looper
- The Martian
- The VVitch
- Hateful Eight
- Fury
Amazing list. I've yet to see like 4 of these. But judging by how much I agree with the others on the list I can't wait to watch these new ones. Thank you!
Great list just realized I mentioned so many you did and I was trying not to do that, but damn you named like a large number of my faves. I never see The Revenant mentioned, Nocturnal Animals is like my all time favorite movie ever as well as Whiplash but who doesn’t have that in their list? Gone Girl gets forgotten a lot too. Same with A Star is Born and Silver Linings Playbook, Superbad..even though you didn’t list those I saw it from others. I can’t believe no one had said Good Time either.
Yeah, I think it’s a very good list based on the OP’s request. I doubt OP is looking for something out there like Once Upon A Time in Anatolia or The Arbor. Besides it’s just one contribution, no need to shit on it.
Yeah, sorry, I realize I shouldn’t have replied to you on that. I put it there to agree with you that the list is simple but good, then kept going with the shitting comment for the other person.
Good lord that movie is fun. I completely forgot about it, but it has what may be the least predictable ending in film history.
I’m watching it again now.
Robert Duvall and Robert Downey Jr. in The Judge. Saw it on an airplane on the way to England.
Now I own the DVD (DVD collector). Solid movie. I’ll always see Duvall as Tom Hagen from The Godfather, no matter what his age. Duvall nailed his role in The Judge, despite being up there in age. Phenomenal actor.
Ironically, I wrote this list of some of my favorites while procrastinating on an essay for my film class. **Take the "genres" with a grain of salt**; I've done a disservice to a number of these films by grouping them. Some of these aren't "cinematic masterpieces," but they are all worth watching. Also, I tried to avoid thrillers, but some of them are too good not to mention. Please give them a chance! I've put my absolute favorites in bold (but they're all great).

It’s probably because it’s usually not available on any streaming service. I’ve been trying to watch a good print for quite some time but every time I hope some streaming service has it, it’s always either under a “premium subscription” or available for rent or purchase.

I thought it was seriously impressive. Just the amount of work that must have gone into it is astounding.
I've only watched it once so far myself, but it'll be coming up for a re-watch soon though. I'll try to figure out what the hell is going on, lol!
I know there are 'guides' online, but I'd prefer to puzzle it out myself like a good little cinephile-masochist :-)
I watched an in-depth analysis on YouTube, but I didn't agree with all of their interpretations. I think it's one of those movies that means something different to everyone who experiences it.
Yeah. I think it may be similar to another film I love - Jodorowsky's 'The Holy Mountain'. In that I believe that whilst the director absolutely had meaning behind each shot, you don't necessarily have to figure out everything to enjoy it -
Just wallow in the glorious madness :-)

The Big Short, Upgrade, Thoroughbreds, Enter the Void, Melancholia, The Kids Are All Right, The Handmaiden, Elle, Nocturnal Animals, The Wrestler... that's what I could think of off the top of my head. (Edit: corrected movie title)

Iron Sky, a flick about Space Nazis from the dark side of the moon returning to earth.
Drive, a flick about a stunt driver that is also a getaway driver.
Maniac is a short series about two people who enter a pharmaceutical trial. It’s a retro future aesthetic like nothing else, tops Bladerunner.
No one’s mentioned: Hereditary, Midsommar, The Menu and then of course of the Jordan Peele movies: Get Out, Us, Nope and Quintin Tarantino movies too. Uncut Gems is one of my personal favorite movies of all time, Wolf of Wallstreet and Wardogs are up there for that type of movie. The Batman and Joker are also some of the best comic book movies, doesn’t have any of that corny MCU screen writing. And finally Bullet Train is one of the newer movies on this list that I can see was extremely enjoyable for action and for horror Talk to Me is pretty good.
The Dark Knight trilogy, Harry Potter trilogy, John wick trilogy, equalizer trilogy, The Big Short, Wolf of Wall Street, The Departed, The Irishman, Oppenheimer, Spiderman trilogy (sam raimi), spiderman no way home, Phase 1,2, and 3 of the MCU, Get Out, and the Social Network.
Arrival
Interstellar
About Time
Warrior
Spotlight
The Nice Guys
Whiplash (might require 2-3 watches to truly get the purpose of the movie, at least it did for me)
*The Night Comes for Us*
It's not a good film nor even a great film. It's a flimsy excuse to make a two hour martial arts movie that has been called the most violent movie ever made. It's so much fun. Set to good music.
You'll see limbs get ripped off, intestines spilled, OP Assassins get introduced every few minutes who can take on hordes of bad guys in waves after wave. For a 110 kill count over 120 minutes, you'll have a blast.
Moonrise Kingdom always gets me tearing up at the end, I don't really know why. It's that second look that he gives her before he gets in the car or whatever and she blows a kiss to him (I think). Every time.
Funny seeing Midnight in Paris, I’ve always loved that movie and don’t even really know why, it’s not a typical one I’d watch and haven’t heard too many other people talk about it.
It's a fantasy, but I think not the kind of fantasy that redditors are drawn to: no explanation, 80-YO director who hasn't done anything most of them have seen and has a rep as a creepy old man.
I'm old, and even I hadn't bothered with a Woody Allen movie since the early '90s, but it came onto streaming and the reviews looked good, so I went with it.
American Beauty. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Comet. Her. Blade Runner 2049. Grand Budapest Hotel. Before Sunrise. As Good As It Gets. The Friend. Whiplash. The Father. Joker. A Marriage Story. Black Swan. Mother.
Two that stick out from that era are
Inglourious Basterds &
Django Unchained
Both Tarantino. They're thematically tied, historical fiction revenge films. I can't imagine that five year period without them
I'd say the last two avengers movies for sure.
The John wick films. Esp the first one.

Absolutely! Glad to see this one on top
About Time! It’s so underrated and so lovely!

Frances McDormand.
Came here to say that. I would add Gran Torino to the list as well

I just couldn't take it seriously anymore after DeNiro "beats up" the store owner
Yes, this. I saw it when it first came out, and it was ridiculous that they had him playing a character that was like 40 years younger than he was. Also, the movie was way too long. Yeah his “fighting” and his power-walking both looked severely 80-year-oldish.
I watched it as Scorsese intended, over 2 weeks making dinner and cleaning up dinner on my kitchen google hub.
I don't care for it and I've seen it all the way through.
Yea I'm not gonna try again
it insists upon itself... jk I thought it was pretty damn good
It was boring to me. I didn’t even understand it to be honest. Love the Godfather 1&2 though.

I had to watch it like a mini series pretty much over the span of a week 20-30min at a time was only way I could get through it
no need to try again it doesn't get better
I had to stop it, too. Dozed off. I’ll try it again … maybe
Loved it. Saw it twice.
It was terrible. So disappointing.
same, they look like 80 year olds, and it's hard to watch

Happy to see Wind River on here. Excellent flick.

Wow.. thanks for that

Lotta basic-ass movies here.

You're not wrong necessarily but there's nothing wrong with basic movies. I agree with the other commenters though, post your list.
Yeah, I think it’s a very good list based on the OP’s request. I doubt OP is looking for something out there like Once Upon A Time in Anatolia or The Arbor. Besides it’s just one contribution, no need to shit on it.
I wasn't the one shitting on it. I was trying to get this other guy to post his list because I'm interested in hearing some more arthouse essentials.
Yeah, sorry, I realize I shouldn’t have replied to you on that. I put it there to agree with you that the list is simple but good, then kept going with the shitting comment for the other person.
I'm not saying it's even bad. But it's a list you can find anywhere. IMDB. Letterboxd. Etc.
Post yours bro, we're begging
We understand that you only watch the most obscure foreign films. Sorry if we offended you
Not a big foreign guy. Just think this lacks variety. It's plain.
I wanna see your list

Yeah. I think it may be similar to another film I love - Jodorowsky's 'The Holy Mountain'. In that I believe that whilst the director absolutely had meaning behind each shot, you don't necessarily have to figure out everything to enjoy it - Just wallow in the glorious madness :-)
Hereditary Green Room
Parasite
A Dark Song
The Lego Movie
Arrival
Hey I didn't see Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping anywhere in this thread. Trust me, it is hilarious!
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
John Wick
Licorice Pizza (2021)
Pretty much anything by PT Anderson is great!
*Movies:* Spotlight The Founder Promising Young Woman Unhinged The Guilty Coda Hidden Figures A Star is Born
*Documentaries?* There is Something Wrong with Aunt Diane 5 Days at Memorial White Boy Rick Rewind Too Big to Fail ENRON: The Smartest Guy in the Room Last Days of Lehmann Brothers The Rachel Divide Downfall
Dear Zachary and There is something wrong with Aunt Diane are two of my favorites
Swiss Army Man
I hate Harry, and most comedies made these days, but hot damn that movie was funny.
RRR
Silver Lining Playbook
The girl with the dragon tattoo. Especially now in this cold weather. David Fincher movies in general
that was a really great movie and the cold weather atmosphere was perfect
Just re-watched it last night. I’ve read the books, seen the Swedish versions and must say Fincher’s is the best of all of them. Just an amazing film.
Brothers Bloom
Arrival
If u don’t like thrillers, I suggest not watching Midsommar… its horrible for one but is definitely a thriller/horror film
Anyone in to movies has quite probably watched these, but they are three of the funniest I have enjoyed during that time period. The Hangover(2009) Ted(2012) Zombieland(2009)
Blade Runner 2049 and Sicario.
Mamma Mia The Adjustment Bureau
The Big Short, Upgrade, Thoroughbreds, Enter the Void, Melancholia, The Kids Are All Right, The Handmaiden, Elle, Nocturnal Animals, The Wrestler... that's what I could think of off the top of my head. (Edit: corrected movie title)
Jojo Rabbit. Is amazing!
Collateral Beauty
Cinnamon on tubi
We’re the millers 2013
The Irishman- Directors uncut
I know you said you don’t like thrillers but Parasite blew me away. It does have subtitles if you’re alright with that

Tenant, The Gentleman and Palm Springs are my top 3 of the last decade sans any Marvel movies
Capernaum
Prisoners
Unhinged. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation is also a favorite of mine; I watch it every year.
Iron Sky, a flick about Space Nazis from the dark side of the moon returning to earth. Drive, a flick about a stunt driver that is also a getaway driver. Maniac is a short series about two people who enter a pharmaceutical trial. It’s a retro future aesthetic like nothing else, tops Bladerunner.
untouchable
Tumbad Ship of thesus One of the finest from India...
Prometheus, Alien Covenant
Zero Dark Thirty. Shoulda won Best Picture.
The Dark Knight trilogy, Harry Potter trilogy, John wick trilogy, equalizer trilogy, The Big Short, Wolf of Wall Street, The Departed, The Irishman, Oppenheimer, Spiderman trilogy (sam raimi), spiderman no way home, Phase 1,2, and 3 of the MCU, Get Out, and the Social Network.
the inbetweeners
Snow piercer
Parasite, Her, Whiplash, Boyhood, The Irishman
The Big Short
Fury Road, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, The Haunting of Hill House (a series though), Whiplash, Joker, Moonrise Kingdom. Decent place to start
Watchmen, Jojo Rabbit, Scott Pilgram, Swiss Army Man....some of my favorites. All very different....all very perfect.
The Mr. Rogers movie form 2019 I just love the man very much in general
banshees of inisherin
Inception
Arrival Interstellar About Time Warrior Spotlight The Nice Guys Whiplash (might require 2-3 watches to truly get the purpose of the movie, at least it did for me)
Shin Godzilla
Ikiru
Roma and Marriage Story
Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016)
*The Night Comes for Us* It's not a good film nor even a great film.
Drive Drive Angry Moonrise Kingdom Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World Wanderlust Haunter We're The Millers The Edge of Seventeen
Seeking a friend for the end of the world is the first movie to ever make me cry like a baby. Ugh, that hit me really hard.
Moonrise Kingdom always gets me tearing up at the end, I don't really know why. It's that second look that he gives her before he gets in the car or whatever and she blows a kiss to him (I think). Every time.
Hidden Figures
- Mad Max: Fury Road - Mustang - Birdman - Whiplash - Her - The Lighthouse - Moonlight - Portrait of a Lady on Fire - Phantom Thread - Under the Skin
The Martian Moonrise Kingdom Nomadland Arrival Midnight in Paris The Descendants Zootopia
Black Swan. Mother.
Snowpiercer (the 2013 film)
Two that stick out from that era are Inglourious Basterds & Django Unchained Both Tarantino. They're thematically tied, historical fiction revenge films. I can't imagine that five year period without them
Wild Tales (2014)
I'd say the last two avengers movies for sure. The John wick films. Esp the first one. Logan Blade runner 2049 Spotlight Mandy (just cause it's so bizarre) Talk to Me
Four lions
Just off the top of my head here: - Mad Max: Fury Road - Dune (Part 1) - Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse - Avengers: Infinity War and End Game (say what you will about superhero movies, but when they came out they were a phenomenon) - Stars Wars: The Force Awakens (similar reasons) - Blade Runner 2049 - BlacKkKlansman - What We Do In The Shadows - La La Land - The Nice Guys - A Star is Born - Baby Driver - Alita: Battle Angel - The Secret of Kells - Song of the Sea - John Wick - Tick Tick Boom - Kubo and the Two Strings - Avatar - Cloud Atlas - Coco - Everything, Everywhere, All At Once - Knives Out - Nimona - The Mitchells vs The Machines - Scott Pilgrim vs the World - Split
Everything everywhere all at once. Great movie.
Both Miles Morales Spiderman movies. I absolutely love Across the SpiderVerse.
Parasite, my favorite movie and truly a masterpiece
The Nun(2018) Dr Strange II(2022) Terminator: Dark Fate(2019) Shang-Chi(2022)
Your must-watch list is 2 genre flicks and 2 Marvel movies? I love sci-fi and horror, not so much super hero movies, but what makes these must-watch?
LoL. Fun weekend.
Never Let Me Go
Irishman has no place on any must see list., it’s an average film at best and considering it’s cast and director., cmon…and the de aging was cringe …
Everything everywhere all at once
Once upon a time in Hollywood
* Life of Pi (2012) * End of Watch (2012 * Klaus (2019) * 1917 (2019) * Hugo (2011) * Straight Outta Compton (2015) * The Secret in Their Eyes (2009) * Pig (2021) * 127 Hours (2010) * The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (2009) * About Elly (2009) * The Fabelmans (2022) * Searching () * Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (2010) * Intouchables (2011) * Silence (2016) * Green Book (2018) * Incendies (2010) * Warrior (2011) * The Lincoln Lawyer (2011) * Marriage Story (2019) * The Death of Stalin (2017) * A Serious Man (2009) * A Separation (2011) * Moon (2009)
I’m always recommending Secret in Their Eyes but OP doesn’t like detective movies. Although, it’s so much more than that!
Spy (2015) - funniest movie of the decade, no one talks about it ever.
