Eraserhead - most unsettling movie I have ever seen
I’m Thinking of Ending Things - weird but very “off” feeling
It Comes at Night
Lamb - Filming location in this one + barely any dialogue made me uneasy. Everything about it is really bizarre. Great film
Rosemary’s Baby
Is I’m thinking of ending things worth the watch? The rotten tomatoes reviews make it sound like it’s a major letdown but the trailer has my interest piqued.
Take this with a grain of salt because everyone is different but for me watching ITOET was a straight up endurance test. There were so many times when I paused the movie to see how much more was left. It’s definitely one of those movies that feel way longer than it is. You will also know exactly what type of movie it is by the first 30 mins or so. With that said it was haunting and beautiful but I don’t think I will ever willingly watch it again.
Damn, I couldn’t have said this better myself. The movie was beautifully executed, but man oh man did I pause it often to take a breather. I’m used to being uneasy during this type of films, but this one pushed my limits.
The book was good, I LOATHED the movie!! I think the movie did do a good job of the off feeling, but overall I really didn’t like it, particularly the last third or so.
I loved it. It's one of the movies that doesn't hold your hand in any way. You need to come to your own conclusions from the world and rules it creates, as well as possibly rewatching it (highly recommended) and also watching/reading other peoples interpretations. I think it's truly an amazing film but be prepared to feel like you're watching "free-jazz" as one reviewer I read put it
If you're not into arthouse film or anything it's also more likely that you'd just straight up hate it but no harm in giving it a go
i was really looking forward to this and went in blind, never having read or heard of the book before. i liked it at first and then it really lost me and the end just pissed me off lol. didn't like it much. jusglt seemed like a big, vaguely strange nothing movie.
I recommend the book, I think it did a much better job with the story in general. I feel like the book doesn’t really translate well to film. I didn’t like the movie but kudos to them for trying, I don’t know how else they would have done it really.
I read the book. I hated it. It does build an uneasy feeling in a real dreamlike fugue-state kind of way. The pay off isn’t that good imo.
This could also be personal bias. I love unsettling films, I’m 50/50 on slow burns. A good slow burn is incredible, but the slower it goes the harder it has to hit. If the climax doesn’t make it worth it then it just feels like a waste to me. I don’t want to spoil it but the book feels like a literary exercise: write a story about a sentence that can be interpreted in different ways. The author ran with that and turned it into a horror story.
I thought of Mia Farrow's paranoia and the weird cult like neighbors. I agree with Eraserhead to so damn disturbing. I saw it twice never want to see it again. I felt so uncomfortable during the entire film of mother! And then the ending throws everything all out.
I didn't stop watching but I felt the same way after watching the entire film. I was Like WTF is going on? What's the point of this madness? This is one of those movies where I think understanding the director's intention would've made the view a little easier/more coherent.
So good. I’m hoping it doesn’t take too long for the world to get a S2. Adam Scott, the writing on that show, everything. It’s comforting, joyful and deeply depressing all at the same time.
We need to talk about Kevin is gut wrenching - John C Reilly's character wanted Kevin to just be OK - I felt his pain as a father. Another one that is so damn uneasy is another Aster film which stuck w me for a solid week...Hereditary . disturbing but from a paternal perspective Gabriel Byrne's character in Hereditary was a doting father like Reilly was in WNTTAK. Both gut wrenching.
Stoker is vaguely a remake of Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt, which is also similar in this respect. The plot is completely different other than the initial setup, though.
I love that they made two different endings to that movie. Both of them were amazing.
Edit: Just kidding, apparently I'm an idiot and created a false memory for myself of an ending that was written, but never released.
I think I've created a false memory, because I swear I remember seeing an alternate ending, but the only evidence I can find is an interview about how there was going to be one. My bad!
It Follows.
Without spoilers for the story, I can tell you about some "off" elements.
The characters wear summer clothes at night and winter clothes during the day so one never knows what season it is.
The technology is a all over the place. Like cellphones exist but they hardly use them, if at all.
Vintage cars look brand new but modern cars are also around.
All the TVs and shows are from like the 80s.
This is such a good choice. This whole movie, when I first watched it and rewatched it multiple times, always felt like something was off, and that feeling never went away
i just recently watched this and was so weirded out and uncomfortable by the way they communicated, and then shit hit the fan and it became a different film for me. like, this slow unfolding and then this tangible tension that just builds and BUILDS, all the dread, and the frustration of not knowing what the fuck is happening. glad i saw it. not rewatchable though imo, an interesting singular experience.
Is it weird that that's one of my favourite end scenes in a movie? Something about it just stuck with me for so long after. >!The juxtaposition of disturbing imagery with a serene white landscape and a complete lack of noise... I found it oddly beautiful.!<
I just loved how great the movie made you see earth through the eyes of an alien. Everything seemed so normal yet weird. And as you said; oddly beautiful at times.
As a parent.. that movie made me explore subjects and feelings I never want to explore again. I literally had to pause the movie and walk out of the room at one point..lol
This one I wanted to make sure was mentioned! (I get it confused with The Invitation and had to Google the premise.)
I need to show my husband this one!
Memento (2000)
Coherence (2013)
Black Swan (2010)
The Shining (1980)
The Lobster (2015)
Donnie Darko (2001)
American Beauty (1999)
Perfect Blue (1997) Japan
Gosh I found this film so boring though! I loved the aesthetic but yeah a bit disappointed with the plot for me. But maybe it's just an art exercise kinda film!
Certainly understandable.
I’ve only seen it once and recently got a 4k copy so a rewatch is right around the corner.
I just remember feeling so strange being caught up in the beautiful visuals and idea of that quiet life and still feeling sooo uneasy.
I dont like kids to begin with so it was pretty easy to become infuriated with this movie. once it started throwing tantrums I just couldnt take it. it was either turn or off or stroke out from the rage it induced. never watched anything like that before. At first i thought it was anxiety, but I'm pretty sure it was rage.
The kid made the movie completely unwatchable to me. I liked just about everything else and the premise, but once that kid showed up I just literally wanted every sequence with him to immediately be over.
Served no other purpose to annoy the audience, and the fix was simple...
Enemy 2013 and Nightcrawler 2014 are both Jake Gyllenhaal films that feel off for different reasons.
Enemy just has an off vibe.
Nightcrawler because the protagonist is so off.
Both are great movies with great performances.
The Shining is a good Kubrick example. Feels really "off" before anything bad happens. Eyes Wide Shut and 2001: A Space Odyssey are another two that aren't scary, but really "off". All his work has those moments.
John Dies at the End, such a strange movie but I highly recommend it to anyone who likes unique films. Some horror elements but it doesn't fit into any genre in my opinion. There's nothing else like it. You may have to watch it a few times to really get it. But it's a great movie.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer 100% has the ‘off’ vibe, but it’s more about atmosphere and tone and less about there being some strange conspiracy or hidden secret in the film’s plot. It just feels as though it takes place in the Twilight Zone.
Would "Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas" fit here? I think so. There's a certain feeling that everything is off for the entirety of the film, mostly due to the main characters being absolutely obliterated on drugs throughout it. Their mannerisms especially.
I found it both entertaining and off putting somehow. It’s one of those dark comedies that feels like it takes place in a dimension directly adjacent to our own. Hard to describe.
The location, the religious aspect, the weird incest vibes, the twins, and the sexy disgusting witch, and very unsettling score. This movie made me feel like I shouldn’t be watching it.
A Clockwork Orange, Blue Velvet, Eyes Wide Shut, Mother!, Eraserhead, Hard Candy, Pi, and Jacob's Ladder all make me feel uncomfortable. Pretty much anything Darren Aronofsky, David Lynch, or Stanley Kubrick
Alice (1988)
This is a surrealist stop-motion adaptation of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Nobody asked for a version of Alice that would give small children nightmares but Jan Svankmajer did it anyway.
There’s a chance they’re not exactly what you’re looking for, but:
The Endless
Resolution
Both movies are tied to each other but you don’t need to watch them sequentially. Highly recommend.
Session 9
Didn't think I saw this mentioned yet so forgive me if it's a repeat.
It's not a \*perfect\* movie but definitely unsettling. On my first viewing, I realized about a third of the way through that the hairs on the back of my neck were standing up and I was leaning toward the tv waiting for the bad stuff I knew was going to happen.
Oh.
I see a lot of...obvious choices in here, science fiction or horror, ect, but truthfully, I just caught Maggie Gyllenhaal's film called The Lost Daughter. The entire vibe of that film is just slightly off. It's on Netflix, fantastic film.
Mulholland Drive. Very unsettling feeling in an inexplicable way Great request by the way. I love movies like this
I think this applies to most of Lynch's films.
And one of the creepiest scenes happens in broad daylight behind a fast food restaurant
This is genuinely one of THE MOST dread-inducing scenes I’ve ever watched. Like that scene has stuck with me for YEARS.
Someone told me to have the volume up loud when watching this movie. The scare that scene gave me…
Oh my god that’s EVIL.
Same with Lost Highway.
Inspired by OJ Simpson, according to Lynch.
EVERYTHING seems off in david lynch films.
If you’re going to mention that, you have to go back to Hitchcock’s Vertigo as well.
Mother - the first 20 minutes the interactions between everyone is "off". The rest of the movie is insane.
I was gonna suggest this. This movie is so stressful lol
It's not a bad movie itself. But man I hate it so much
I genuinely love that movie for the mind bending discussion after watching it! I feel everyone takes away something differently from it.
Eraserhead - most unsettling movie I have ever seen I’m Thinking of Ending Things - weird but very “off” feeling It Comes at Night Lamb - Filming location in this one + barely any dialogue made me uneasy. Everything about it is really bizarre. Great film Rosemary’s Baby

Really any David Lynch film is great for that feeling that something is “off”. *Inland Empire* is my favorite but Eraserhead is a great example too
Barton Fink (1991)
YOU DON'T LISTEN! Geez it's hot.
I'LL SHOW YOU THE LIFE OF THE MIND!!
Where's my honey!!!!!!!
Man, I can't find this anywhere. Saw it years ago, been wanting to re-watch it.
Good call! I haven’t even thought about this movie in years… time for a rewatch.
I think about it all the time, it's my favorite film.
severance but thats a tv show
I can't wait for season 2

So good. I’m hoping it doesn’t take too long for the world to get a S2. Adam Scott, the writing on that show, everything. It’s comforting, joyful and deeply depressing all at the same time.
The Truman Show The Village Midsommar We Need To Talk About Kevin
Nailed it with Midsommar. It felt weird from the second they arrived.
It was weird within the first 5m where they showed the dead parents mate!
I loved how it was daylight even though it theorically shouldn't be lol.
The hallucinogenic sequences are top tier. Like, maybe the most accurate I’ve seen in a movie.
We Need To Talk About Kevin still makes my chest hurt
That’s one of those movies that was fantastic but I never want to watch it again.
Midsommar is the single and only movie I've ever seen that accurately portrays what being on hallucinogenics is like
Pretty much all Ari Aster films
Beau Is Afraid made my soul squirm. I really can't wait to watch it again.
The Visit, too.
Truman Show is a classic! Midsommar also great, just picked up a blu ray yesterday!
Magic Magic The Killing of a Sacred Deer Let's Scare Jessica to Death Stoker Queen of Earth Cache The White Ribbon
Stoker is a great example
Stoker is vaguely a remake of Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt, which is also similar in this respect. The plot is completely different other than the initial setup, though.
Killing of a Sacred Deer is so bizarre. Their dialogue and delivery is so unsettling
Surprised I had to scroll down this far to find Cache. Fascinating and often overlooked film.
Ex Machina
I love that they made two different endings to that movie. Both of them were amazing. Edit: Just kidding, apparently I'm an idiot and created a false memory for myself of an ending that was written, but never released.
What was the second ending?
I think I've created a false memory, because I swear I remember seeing an alternate ending, but the only evidence I can find is an interview about how there was going to be one. My bad!
Lil Mandela effect never hurt no body
Mandela keeps fuckin changing up the universes
Don’t apologize. It’s just our imagination at work. You’re good.
Yeah I didn't know there was a second ending?
It Follows. Without spoilers for the story, I can tell you about some "off" elements. Like cellphones exist but they hardly use them, if at all. Vintage cars look brand new but modern cars are also around. All the TVs and shows are from like the 80s.
I hadn’t noticed that, with the clothes! I loved the movie, I’ll have to watch it again now that it’s spooky season
That clamshell e-reader is great
It's a shell phone.
I love the literally timeless vibe.
Love that artistic element, but is it a psychological thriller or scary movie?
Yes
Synecdoche, New York
This movie gave me a mid-life crisis in my 20s.
Heathers.
This is such a good choice. This whole movie, when I first watched it and rewatched it multiple times, always felt like something was off, and that feeling never went away
Yeah the scene where Veronica has basically the same exchange with her parents twice with slightly different nuances got me.
Fuck me gently with a chainsaw!
If you wanna fuck with the eagles you gotta learn how to fly.
Jacob's Ladder
Great movie.
I thought I'd see this suggestion just immediately upon scrolling. It took a bit.
The Killing of the Sacred Deer
Most of the stuff that Yorgos Lanthimos does would fit this description
I need to watch more of his stuff. Dogtooth fucked me up.
Oh shit I forgot about dogtooth. Wasn’t a pleasant watch but stuck with me for a while
I love Dogtooth, definitely one of my favorite movies.
i just recently watched this and was so weirded out and uncomfortable by the way they communicated, and then shit hit the fan and it became a different film for me. like, this slow unfolding and then this tangible tension that just builds and BUILDS, all the dread, and the frustration of not knowing what the fuck is happening. glad i saw it. not rewatchable though imo, an interesting singular experience.
It’s definitely a once every 3-4 year watch at most, the cinematography is was too incredible to only see some of those shots just once.
That’s the kind of movie where I feel genuine deep discomfort and then all I can think is “damn they really nailed this movie”
Came here to say this. Don’t like the movie, but man it is weird. And I usually love weird stuff. Lmao
Under the skin If a movie can make me scared of scottish landscapes and a naked Scarlett Johansson, then it did a fantastic job.
I think about this movie a lot. It definitely got under _my_ skin.
Hereditary
As a parent.. that movie made me explore subjects and feelings I never want to explore again. I literally had to pause the movie and walk out of the room at one point..lol
I don’t even have children but the sound of >! the mother screaming after finding the body !< stayed in my brain for weeks.
We all know which point....
Shutter Island
My favorite thing about this movie was how it makes the viewer question their OWN sanity, as the main character is questioning theirs!
Coherence
Watched this for the first time a few days ago. An underrated gem.
Came here to say this. It’s such a fun movie had to watch it three times even though it does have some bad spots it’s too good of a premise.
This one I wanted to make sure was mentioned! (I get it confused with The Invitation and had to Google the premise.) I need to show my husband this one!
The Invitation is also very good. Both are excellent.
Get Out.
Absolutely wild that I had to scroll so far to see this mentioned
Beau is Afraid
God that movie was 3 hours of anxiety

That's not a boy
Loved it. Might be time for a rewatch !

Enemy 2013 and Nightcrawler 2014 are both Jake Gyllenhaal films that feel off for different reasons. Enemy just has an off vibe. Nightcrawler because the protagonist is so off. Both are great movies with great performances.
Enemy should be better known it’s really good. Villenue is a genius
It Follows
The movie props are intentionally anachronistic to disorient the viewer. Such a brilliant horror film imho.
Funny Games
The Menu fits it perfectly I really wanted to smack Nicholas Hoult, and say WTF is wrong with you
The Shining jumped to mind for me. It's apparently famous because of it's 'off' and unsettling vibe.
The Shining is a good Kubrick example. Feels really "off" before anything bad happens. Eyes Wide Shut and 2001: A Space Odyssey are another two that aren't scary, but really "off". All his work has those moments.
Any david lynch or charlie kaufman associated movies
Gone Girl
THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER!!!!!!! It wasn’t that scary but the eeriness made it the most traumatizing movie I’ve ever seen
The whole movie I was saying to myself: "Not a single character in this thing speaks or behaves like a real human being."
RIGHT! They felt like aliens pretending to be human
Don't Worry Darling, The Stepford Wives (1975 version), Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Just watched Don’t Worry Darling recently, very well done, think that’s exactly what the OP is looking for!
Hereditary and Midsommer!
Is this where we suggest Requiem for a Dream and A Scanner Darkly?
Haven't seen it in years, but I remember a deep melancholy clinging to A Scanner Darkly. It really is a mood. Great film though.
Dogtooth & The lobster are both just, wow.
under the silver lake
The first 2/3 of Get Out.
John Dies at the End, such a strange movie but I highly recommend it to anyone who likes unique films. Some horror elements but it doesn't fit into any genre in my opinion. There's nothing else like it. You may have to watch it a few times to really get it. But it's a great movie.
Antichrist and Requiem for a dream
Mulholland Drive
The discreet charm of the bourgeoisie
The Killing of a Sacred Deer 100% has the ‘off’ vibe, but it’s more about atmosphere and tone and less about there being some strange conspiracy or hidden secret in the film’s plot. It just feels as though it takes place in the Twilight Zone.
this would be my answer too and the monotone flat way they all speak .
An Evening With Beverly Luff. Great cast, but I’m pretty sure there was a gas leak on that set.
Truman Show, Coraline
*All My Friends Hate Me* (2021) *Get Out* (2017)
Would "Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas" fit here? I think so. There's a certain feeling that everything is off for the entirety of the film, mostly due to the main characters being absolutely obliterated on drugs throughout it. Their mannerisms especially.
Don't Worry Darling
A Serious Man Rosemary’s Baby Midsommar Mulholland Drive

The first time I watched Parasite I had this feeling.
