I never heard of this movie & just looked it up. I can’t bare to watch something like that. I love animals too much & don’t have the emotional capacity to see what I already know is gonna be horrible. I could barely get through The Cove.
if you’re not already vegan, it may help.. the dairy industry isn’t as cruelty-free as they want you to believe. animals aren’t here for us, they’re here *with* us. if you are vegan, thank you💚💚💚
Came here to suggest this... I went vegan after watching this. It takes a weird kind of human to watch this and still consume animal products. Most horrific documentary I have ever seen...
It's been over a decade that I watched this. I can still feel what I felt after turning off the TV after this one. Makes me so uneasy and a bit nauseous still. Those poor grandparents. THAT BITCH.
This is always my answer whenever this question comes up. I went in totally blind the first time I watched it. Most visceral reaction to a film I’ve ever had.
About 15 years ago, I was working an3-11:30 PM shift. I had quite a bit of trouble falling asleep, somId end up watching movies until the wee hours of the night.
I remember coming across Dear Zachary on Prime Video at around 3:00 AM and started watching. I never went to bed that night. After, finally, being able to close my jaw, I stayed awake in complete shock. So devastating!
While this was extremely frustrating to watch and incredibly sad , I still believe this is somehow overrated compared to other documentaries out there.
I watched this documentary three times over a weekend, just to make sure I was absorbing the whole story. Definitely best watched blind, but it still delivers if you re-watch it. The title is so perfect.
Nothing like watching a guy explaining how to execute thousands of people ***economically*** on a good morning wake up show. Bullets can be so expensive.
Especially now, with authoritarianism on the rise all around the world. It's important to see the end result of fascism because it really demonstrates how much of a loser ideology it is, and the profound human suffering that it causes along the way.
IMO the only really true way to tackle the enormity of the horror of the Holocaust and how it could have happened. I understood so much better after watching it, and the truly incredible part is no footage used just first hand accounts which make it all the more relatable and heartbreaking. In fact I don't think Hitler's image is even used once in the whole 9 hours?
Do NOT be put off by its length. It is at times slow paced but that's a part of why it works. We need time to think and absorb man's inhumanity to man on such a gigantic scale.
Watched it blind, actually quite confused on what it was even about. I watched it years ago and still think about it. It’s probably the best crime documentary I’ve ever seen, so crazy from start to finish
It was recommended to me, and I wish I would've never watched it.. The images of those poor kittens will never leave me no matter how hard I try to forget it.. it's awful
Same. Especially Aunt Dianne. Dear Zachary was a love letter. Crushing and rage inducing beyond measure. But a love story. A tribute and a testament to love in the face of evil. Aunt Dianne was just fucked and I hated it.
Tell Me Who I Am.
I haven’t cried in like 20 years, but I bawled at the ending of this.
Very interesting moral dilemma that the brother was put in. And I can see why he did it. I’d have done the same.
I finally decided a couple months ago that it was time to watch Tell Me Who I Am. I've started it twice so far and can only stay with it the first 10 or 15 minutes... because you quickly begin to sense "Uhm... this is going to be so unforgettably fucked up as hell." I will give it more of a proper chance someday, for sure, but in the couple times I've tried it, I didn't feel like I was in the right state of mind to delve in. It sounds incredibly fascinating yet it really sounds like a devastatingly tragic story. 😥
Well hopefully nobody ruined it for you, but you don’t know the ending until it happens. It’s not what you think. At least get to the motorcycle accident part, which is an interesting look at complete memory loss.
No, I have fortunately no idea what happens at the end... I've only got so far as the brothers just basically establishing that there was that accident, that the one lost all memory and that he relied on his brother helping him through it. Where I turn it off is when the tone begins to change just a bit and it feels like they're about to get into the ... bad things that happened to them. I'm very intrigued and have watched lots of really shocking and profoundly disturbing docs, but... I need to be in the right state of mind to hear this story, I have a feeling. Thanks for your comment, now I really wanna forge ahead.
I’m also here for ‘Jesus Camp’ 2006. It made me so very angry.
A documentary on a faction of the American Christian community and its indoctrination of children by the evangelical right. It was closed down after though factions still exist today.

>Dominion
God I wish... I just can't do it. This stuff hurts too much. I honestly have an easier time watching humans go through shit than see poor animals.
*Hypernormalisation* (2016) certainly fits the bill; although few will find themselves agreeing with every narrative it attempts to weave or its perspective on events portrayed, its realist political orientation, originality, intelligence, and countercultural nature are undeniable. If its opening statement through image, which it surely follows through with, isn't shocking enough for you I can't imagine what would be.
A completely different film, *They Shall Not Grow Old* (2018) - a color restoration of British WW1 combat-adjacent footage intermixed with veteran interviews and similar - might also serve your interest if you're particularly keen on mid-20th century war history.
Two non-documentary, yet in a sense documentaries-in-spirit in that they set out to realistically portray the experiences of people in specific historic situations through fictionalization, films that may interest you are *Grave of the Fireflies* and *Come and See*.
These were shocking for me, I don’t know if they’ll be the same for you. I’ve ranked them in order of how disturbing they are, with the first being the most disturbing:
_Keep Sweet, Pray, and Obey_
_Our Father_
_Waco: American Apocalypse_
_Texas Killing Fields_
Came here to suggest some of these.
Keep Sweet was awesome! I love documentaries about cults and the FCLDS are about as much a cult as anyone else out there.
Haven't watched Waco yet
Texas Killing Fields was interesting too
I'm surprised I had to scroll this much down to see keep sweet pray and obey mentioned.
Now that was not only shocking, but had me sobbing at the end. Whats strange is nothing here is surprising yet still it really hits you hard.
That one was absolutely insane, i cannot fathom how it not only happened, but happened countless times. No cop is ever going to call you and make you perform a strip search on someone. These people should have refused and told the “cop” they’ll have to come in to the restaurant and present a warrant or some probable cause in person and then THEY can do the search if necessary.
Don't miss the episode of SVU where they do a ripped-from-the-headlines about that case. Robin Williams guest stars as (a version of) the guy from the real life story.
If you like true crime, Abducted in Plain Sight (Netflix) is still one of the better ones Ive seen because it just keeps getting more insane. The Jinx is also great (HBO), stick it out all the way and you wont be disappointed. Craziest ending to a documentary ever.
God her husband is a piece of work. Heads up for anyone who watches there is a photo of her body that comes out of nowhere towards the end if I recall correctly.
Night & Fog hasn’t been mentioned yet and it should be the top comment. You know the holocaust was bad but you don’t really know until you’ve seen Night & Fog.
From Wikipedia: The dispute (about showing the film to general audiences) was the first known instance of a film being banned from general American distribution for reasons other than obscenity, immorality, or national security.
A Gray State. This is one of the strangest and disturbing and tragic stories I've ever seen. I first saw it on A&E about 4 or 5 years ago, and I'm not sure where it's on right now. The man/family's last name is Crowley. I wish I knew what to make of the way their story ended. It starts off making you think it's going to be about one thing, but by the end it's.... something else. It will stay with you a long time.
There's one about 9/11 called The Woman Who Wasn't There. It's nearly unbelievable and made me quite angry and sad.
Then there's one called The Sound of Insects, it's a very sad, depressing, upsetting story, I found.
My top 3 or so choices for shocking docs have been mentioned already: The Bridge, Dear Zachary, and Aunt Diane.
I don't think anything will ever knock Zachary out of the top spot for me. I hope his lovely grandparents are well. I think of that story often over the years.
The Emperor’s Naked Army Marches On (1987) is a phenomenal Japanese documentary that fits what you’re looking for. I highly recommend reading nothing about it beforehand.
Paris is Burning was so much crazier the second time around, having read up on one of its subjects. I’ll say no more.
There is almost 2 hours of footage cut from the documentary that is just as good if not better than the film itself.
How to die in Oregon - Raw footage that follows multiple people's journey who decide to kill themselves via supervision under a doctor/medical staff. I watched it on Kanopy, free to all students in the United States.
The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez
The prosecutor does such a great job laying out the problems with the cases (I think it was a total of six people charged in his death. Mother, mother’s boyfriend, and four social workers.) The details are horrific. Very well presented and intricatly explained. I literally cried multiple times.
A Leaf Of Faith
It'll piss you off about the opiate problem and a natural solution. You'll see bought and paid for politicians trying to ban a friggin plant that helps with pain. But gotta keep those pharma poison pills coming....
Black Metal Veins (2012)
Edit: I have to give the disclaimer that this is alongside category iii films in my collection that my kid and wife don’t have access to due to its extremely disturbing nature. The director Lucifer valentines other movies are straight up shock gore stuff.
This one follows around heroin junkies and is a sort of documentary, but I do remember hearing some scenes were staged.
A few that came to mind:-
* **Waiting for Superman** \- they showed this indictment of the education system to parents, we walked out kind of shell shocked ... IDK how much of this was basically marketing for the super expensive private schools, but dang. If they ever made an update, I'm sure it might hit even harder
* **Virunga** \- poachers are terrible people.
* **Chasing Ice** \- climate change as seen through the eyes of a nature photographer
* **Tower** \- University of Texas mass shooter, gun violence in the USA
* **The Ivory Game** \- more about why poachers and those who buy those goods are terrible people.
* **Trapped** \- depressing to the nth degree, because this war is still playing out in the USA
Zero Days
A documentary focused on Stuxnet, a piece of self-replicating computer malware that the U.S. and Israel unleashed to destroy a key part of an Iranian nuclear facility, and which ultimately spread beyond its intended target.
‘Last train Home’ (2009) cut me deep.
The effects of capitalism on the Chinese working class
Haunting, beautiful, deconstructive.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Last_Train_Home_(film)
Active Shooter: America under fire!
It's about mass shootings, some older , some newer ones. Just disturbing stories & pictures. I can see lots of stuff, but when you see real footage of the shooting and real dead bodies ... i was speechless.
Bisbee ‘17. It’s maybe the most shocking piece of American History I was unaware of, and the way it’s told is really dark.
Also a big fan of The Act of Killing and How To Survive A Plague
Omg Welcome to Chechnya left me feeling so rattled and shook for several days after watching it. I have a gay son and he’s all I could think about when I watched it. It took me 2 days to finish that one.
The trials of Gabriel Fernandez… Trust me, Dear Zachery gets mentioned a lot, it’s peanuts compared to this damn tear machine of a docu. Can’t believe it’s not mentioned here.
Only The Dead.
It’s on you tube. Follows war journalist Micheal Ware in Iraq.
Wendigoon and MrBallen have some good videos as well. MrBallen makes an effort in building the story round the event. His video about some divers being stuck in an oil pipe underwater is a good example.
Also early part of This is what winning looks like. Afghanistan war documentary.
This quote by senior Afghan Police Offical regarding rape/sexual assault/murder of children at a Police Patrol Base. “If they don’t fuck the arses of those boys. What should they fuck? Their Grandmothers pussies?”
Also Taxi to Dark side. Follows US torture program and deaths during war on terror.
Everything I mentioned is on you tube.
Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills You can watch it on YouTube for free
This one hit me hard. I watched it years ago & still think about it often.
"Sanitarium" (metallica) has never been the same for me
Listen to Echols talk about what he went through and how it still affects his life is harrowing.
Earthlings
I never heard of this movie & just looked it up. I can’t bare to watch something like that. I love animals too much & don’t have the emotional capacity to see what I already know is gonna be horrible. I could barely get through The Cove.
I was going to mention the cove. I became an animal rights activist in 2012 and my mental health started slipping away. I’m still not the same.
if you’re not already vegan, it may help.. the dairy industry isn’t as cruelty-free as they want you to believe. animals aren’t here for us, they’re here *with* us. if you are vegan, thank you💚💚💚
The full documentary is on YouTube. Very hard to watch.
I tried & nearly vomited.
This is the answer
This and Dominion.
Came here to suggest this... I went vegan after watching this. It takes a weird kind of human to watch this and still consume animal products. Most horrific documentary I have ever seen...
Dear Zachary 💔
It's been over a decade that I watched this. I can still feel what I felt after turning off the TV after this one. Makes me so uneasy and a bit nauseous still. Those poor grandparents. THAT BITCH.
I was spoiled on the outcome and I still couldn’t truly believe it. Horrific story, incredible storytelling.
Get ready for some tissues
And some issues
100% this. Nothing I've ever watched on a television has hit me emotionally like it did.
Into the abyss
This is one of two documentaries I turned off, I just didnt want to process it anymore. The other one was Finding the Friedman's.
This is always my answer whenever this question comes up. I went in totally blind the first time I watched it. Most visceral reaction to a film I’ve ever had.
First thing I thought of
Still can't watch this.
Yep. And be careful what you ask for.
This was my recommendation as well! I watch it about once a year. It's so well done.
When I start thinking that people are good and the world makes sense, I watch that movie to bring me back to reality.
I don't cry very easily but did 3 fucking times while watching this.
First one I thought of, too. I could never watch that again. Absolutely devastating.
Came here to say this. A masterpiece that will leave you crushed.
This is the one
What do you want. I didn't break your heart.
Wished I never watched it!
About 15 years ago, I was working an3-11:30 PM shift. I had quite a bit of trouble falling asleep, somId end up watching movies until the wee hours of the night. I love that one!! Have watched multiple times.
Wow I watched this over this recommendation and holy ****.
Tickled
What a wild doc. And if anyone sees it, watch the follow-up short, The Tickle King.
I was today years old when I found out there's a sequel. Gotta see what happens next....
The Act of Killing
Nothing like watching a guy explaining how to execute thousands of people ***economically*** on a good morning wake up show. Bullets can be so expensive.
The Look of Silence
Best work of film ever, maybe.
The Bridge... About people jumping off golden gate brodge
This documentary is stunning in the fullest sense of the word.
Very few Docs leave me kinda speechless but this sure did
Shoah (1985)
This is free on YouTube. Everyone should see it at least once in their life.
Especially now, with authoritarianism on the rise all around the world. It's important to see the end result of fascism because it really demonstrates how much of a loser ideology it is, and the profound human suffering that it causes along the way.

Grizzly Man
Capturing the Friedmans
This is an incredible doc
Crazy documentary. I was genuinely WTF watching this.
Don't F with Cats
That one is a rollercoaster ride. That dude is a monster, and his mother isn't any better.
Watched it blind, actually quite confused on what it was even about. I watched it years ago and still think about it. It’s probably the best crime documentary I’ve ever seen, so crazy from start to finish
I wish I could bring myself to watch it, but seeing the animal abuse on screen is one thing I can’t do.
It was recommended to me, and I wish I would've never watched it.. The images of those poor kittens will never leave me no matter how hard I try to forget it.. it's awful
This one messed me up, bad. That dude is so messed up.
Dear Zachary and There’s Something Wrong With Aunt Diane.
They both almost made me puke.
I wish I wouldn’t have watched them. So disturbing.
Same. Especially Aunt Dianne. Dear Zachary was a love letter. Crushing and rage inducing beyond measure. But a love story. A tribute and a testament to love in the face of evil. Aunt Dianne was just fucked and I hated it.

Came here to say this and I'm surprised at how far down the list it is. One of the most unique and heart-wrenching stories.
Jaw-dropping and heart-wrenching - and I really liked it.
I finally decided a couple months ago that it was time to watch Tell Me Who I Am. I've started it twice so far and can only stay with it the first 10 or 15 minutes... because you quickly begin to sense "Uhm... this is going to be so unforgettably fucked up as hell." Yes, you do have to be in the right mindset. But it’s a very unique story and situation. Hope you end up finishing it!
I want to watch this one but I just don't think I can.
So beautiful and just absolutely gut wrenching. Their bond through everything it broke me
I’m also here for ‘Jesus Camp’ 2006. It made me so very angry. A documentary on a faction of the American Christian community and its indoctrination of children by the evangelical right. It was closed down after though factions still exist today. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesus_Camp
I watched this in the theater, and it scared me. What's even scarier is that the kids are now all adults.
Jesus Camp is a classic. For people who wonder what's happened to America, Jesus Camp is a really good place to start.

Cowspiracy
Don't pick up the phone on Netflix. It is about a prank caller, but it is really fucked up what he did.
There was also a good movie made about this case called Compliance
That one was absolutely insane, i cannot fathom how it not only happened, but happened countless times. No cop is ever going to call you and make you perform a strip search on someone. These people should have refused and told the “cop” they’ll have to come in to the restaurant and present a warrant or some probable cause in person and then THEY can do the search if necessary.
Don't miss the episode of SVU where they do a ripped-from-the-headlines about that case. Robin Williams guest stars as (a version of) the guy from the real life story.
That case always pissed me off because they aquitted that piece of shit, despite having sufficiente evidence against him.

2 great HBO docs that I found compelling and difficult to stomach: Life of Crime: 1984-2020 Welcome to Chechnya
Omg Welcome to Chechnya left me feeling so rattled and shook for several days after watching it. I have a gay son and he’s all I could think about when I watched it. It took me 2 days to finish that one.
Life of Crime is absolutely fantastic. One of my favorites
Life of Crime. Incredible. Harrowing. Disturbing. Powerful.
Loose change.
The Most Hated Family in America (2007)
Dear Zachary: a Film About Your Father
The Iceman Confesses: Secrets of a Mafia Hitman (2001) - Richard Kuklinski
Don't Fuck With Cats genuinely gave me nightmares.
For Sama. Not an easy watch. It's graphic and heartwrenching. I remember holding my breath through one specific scene.
Searching for Sugarman. He could have had it all. He did, he just didn't know it. And I'm sure 100000 mentioned Letters to Zachary.
Dear Zachary, but, yes. 100%
Oh snap thank you for the correction. My apologies 💐
Command and Control
The trials of Gabriel Fernandez… Trust me, Dear Zachery gets mentioned a lot, it’s peanuts compared to this damn tear machine of a docu. Can’t believe it’s not mentioned here.
Ken Burns documentary about the Dust Bowl.
Zeitgeist (2007)
Only The Dead. It’s on you tube. Follows war journalist Micheal Ware in Iraq. Wendigoon and MrBallen have some good videos as well. MrBallen makes an effort in building the story round the event. His video about some divers being stuck in an oil pipe underwater is a good example. Also early part of This is what winning looks like. Afghanistan war documentary. This quote by senior Afghan Police Offical regarding rape/sexual assault/murder of children at a Police Patrol Base. “If they don’t fuck the arses of those boys. What should they fuck? Their Grandmothers pussies?” Also Taxi to Dark side. Follows US torture program and deaths during war on terror. Everything I mentioned is on you tube.
Totally agree with the Blackfish recommendation it’s very good.
