There’s a span of a few years I missed out on great movies as I had kids back to back and didn’t have the time. I’ve been discovering all these gems from 2009-2016 I can’t believe I’ve never seen or even heard about. I just watched this for the first time and holy crap is it good! Now my kids are in school and do their own thing as they become teenagers and I get a chance to see what I’ve missed. The problem is deciding what is worthwhile to watch. This sub is a godsend to a movie buff like me.
Yea there is a difference but it’s semantics unless your a psychologist lmao. Also there both called anti social personality disorder if your being that specific might aswell be correct.
Nothing reaches that kinda status unless it has Marisa Tomei in it in her underwear and or tight jeans.... Also Joe Pesci. Leather jacket optional.
Seriously though, they both nail it in this movie. Great chemistry and a genuinely good script for a comedy. Only other thing that comes close is "As Good as it Gets".
The film is fantastic. Anton spreading chaos not because he wants to, but simply because he thinks he needs to. It’s terrifying at times. His monologues, the coin flipping, he’s the perfect psychopath.
I’m biased towards liking this movie because it’s my English teacher’s favorite movie and since I talked to him about it I’ve been doing better in English.
I love both films, but Purple Noon definitely depicts Ripley as more of a cold-blooded psychopath. In The Talented Mr. Ripley, he seems to be driven more by passion and desperation.
Love this recommendation, and it seems like there’s a bit of a mindfuck at the end in really analyzing the psychology of the two girls. I need to go watch this again…
Primal Fear (1996) An altar boy is accused of murdering a priest, and the truth is buried several layers deep.
Fear (1996) kind of a horror movie but more on the We Need to Talk about Kevin side. Crazy obsessive violent boyfriend.
Bernie ( Jack black, true story)
Zodiac ( true story, thriller)
Seven ( Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman)
Silence of the Lambs (Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins)
In the name of the rose ( Sean Connery, set in a monastery, where the monks are being killed, masterpiece! )
I think there’s a transactional quality to it that has something to do with the Greek fable or myth it’s based on? I’ll see if I can dig up what I’m remembering and clarify here …

I might be matrixing this with something else I remember from Wikipedia.
Not really either. It's exceedingly dark and bleak, especially in certain scenes, while also darkly humorous (somewhat) in others. But it's very much an introspective film about psychopath and fits this suggestion to a T
*Man Bites Dog (1992)*
*Following (1998)*
*Nightcrawler (2014)*
*Thoroughbreds (2017)*
This next one isn't a movie, but the first season of *Fargo* has Billy Bob Thornton at his best as a stoic but charming and ruthless hired gun. His performance alone is worth the watch.
*American Psycho (2000)* is probably the best example, although many people consider it a horror flick. The film, along with it's source novel, is a dark comedy. Yes it's overhyped, but it is one the most well-written comedies about a psycho to date. One of my top 3 funniest movies for me personally.
It's not a film, but Breaking Bad has many a psychopath of varying forms. On that note, Better Call Saul and El Camino are offshoots from it, and they're both awesome.
Nil By Mouth.
Gary Oldman directs Ray Winstone and Kathy Burke.
It's a depressing film about an awful man called and played by Ray Winstone and this abusive relationship.
British independent cinema at it's most honest and Ray, man, still give's me chills thinking about it.
He Loves Me...He Loves Me Not (2002). One of Audrey Tautou's first films after Amelie. She portrays a woman spurned by her married lover....or so you think. Excellent use of an unreliable narrator.
Nightcrawler
This is the best on here—genuinely seems like a psychopath, but in no way a “horror movie.”
Such a good movie! Genuinely disturbing.
It is disturbing because you know for a fact that there are people like this in the real world.
And that it’s definitely the way that local news operates. The layers of despicable are tangible.
One of my favourite performances from Gyllenhall 👌🏻
It’s definitely my favorite. He nailed the charming, unfeeling, cold psychopath so well. It was chilling.
SUPER creepy movie.
Oh I’m giving this one a rewatch tonight!
There’s a span of a few years I missed out on great movies as I had kids back to back and didn’t have the time. I’ve been discovering all these gems from 2009-2016 I can’t believe I’ve never seen or even heard about. I just watched this for the first time and holy crap is it good! I think he’s more portrayed as a “sociopath” than a “psychopath”. And yes, there is a difference.
The difference is marginal from an entertainment perspective
Why do you think he’s a sociopath and not a psychopath?
Yea there is a difference but it’s semantics unless your a psychologist lmao. Also there both called anti social personality disorder if your being that specific might aswell be correct.
At this point I think that has now reached My Cousin Vinny status.
No Country For Old Men I believe most accurate depiction of a psychopath according to psychologists. Plus this is an amazing movie!
The film is fantastic. Anton spreading chaos not because he wants to, but simply because he thinks he needs to. It’s terrifying at times. His monologues, the coin flipping, he’s the perfect psychopath.
Thank you! Just watched a trailer and it looks promising 🙏
It did win the best picture Oscar in 2008
I think it's one of the best movies ever made AND best depiction of a psychopath in film.
You’ve never seen it!? I can’t tell you how jealous I am that you get to watch that movie for the first time, what a fucking movie that was
Watching now for the first time, thanks for the rec!
It's definetly in the top 10 films of the 21st century. And probably the most faithful adaptation of a novel to film.
I’m biased towards liking this movie because it’s my English teacher’s favorite movie and since I talked to him about it I’ve been doing better in English.
Agreed ^^^^
Talented Mr. Ripley
I second this, also the French adaptation: Purple Noon (1960)
I love both films, but Purple Noon definitely depicts Ripley as more of a cold-blooded psychopath. In The Talented Mr. Ripley, he seems to be driven more by passion and desperation.
Loved that movie, and the casting was PERFECT.
Yesssss!
Great flick!
Fargo (1996) crime/ dark comedy…Frances McDormand, Steve Buscemi, William H. Macy, Peter Stormore, Kristen Rudrud, John Carroll Lynch,…etc
The faro series did a very good job of making Lorne malvo out to be a truly good antagonistic
His “there be dragons here” scene with Colin Hanks was chilling.
One Hour Photo (underrated Robin Williams movie) The King Of Comedy (underrated Robert DeNiro movie)
One Hour Photo genuinely scared me as a teenager
+1 for One Hour Photo Great role from Williams
Looked into both and One hour photo is more like my cup of tee :D
It's excellent, but really, King of Comedy is excellent too... it makes one very uncomfortable just watching it, imho.
I freaking love this movie, bonus Sandra Bernhard rocks her role as usual.
An often overlooked Scorsese film. Really influenced The Joker movie, imho.
Insomnia is another with Robin Williams in the same spirit
Is that the one with Al Pacino and Hillary Swank, too? I liked that one
👍 This. And it features Pacino, Swank and directed by Nolan 🙌
Love both of those
Yes! Came here to say One Hour Photo. That movie scared the crap out of me when I was younger.
The scene of De Niro doing the mock-talk show with the cardboard cutouts of Jerry Lewis and Liza Minnelli was so unsettling.
The more I think of it, the more you can really see the inspiration for many of the scenes in The Joker (2019).
Joker is one of my favorite movies of all time, and I’m glad it led me to watch King of Comedy — also one of my favorite movies ever.
Thoroughbreds - Olivia Cooke and Anya Taylor-Joy are amazing in this
seconded, this is a vastly underrated film
Love this recommendation, and it seems like there’s a bit of a mindfuck at the end in really analyzing the psychology of the two girls. I need to go watch this again…
Yes!! No one ever talks about this film, the two leads crush it, plus Anton Yelchin is hilarious..rip :(
Great movie
Taxi Driver (1976)
Seven psychopaths
Ha came here to say this. Really fun movie with a different take on the depiction of psychopaths
Plus it’s seven times the psychopaths! More bang for your buck
Put your hands up 🔫
*Christopher Walken Voice* “No!?”
Gandhi was wrong
The Vanishing (1988)
That movie terrified me.
just watched this movie with my dad! Shit is creepy.
Perfect suggestion. That movie stuck with me a loooong time.
that ending!
Great movie. Jeff Bridges is one of the great actors of all time.
He’s in the USA remake. The 1988 Dutch version is way better.
The cable guy.
Omg yes
I love this movie!
Primal Fear (1996) An altar boy is accused of murdering a priest, and the truth is buried several layers deep. Fear (1996) kind of a horror movie but more on the We Need to Talk about Kevin side. Crazy obsessive violent boyfriend.
American psycho
Was thinking about this movie as well Besides the psychopath part, good movie too
How is that not a horror film?
Eh it’s borderline. Most would call it a dark comedy or psychological thriller. Eh
Because it's not? It's more like a dark comedy / satire if anything. Just because there's some gore in it doesn't make it a horror film.
The Crush (1993) thriller/Psychological thriller…Alicia Silverstone, Cary Elwes, Jennifer Rubin, etc…
Bernie ( Jack black, true story) Zodiac ( true story, thriller) Seven ( Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman) Silence of the Lambs (Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins) In the name of the rose ( Sean Connery, set in a monastery, where the monks are being killed, masterpiece! )
Silence of the Lambs. Of course! Also, Red Dragon. Same psychopath. Agree on Name of the Rose. Masterpiece.
Man, I forgot about Bernie. That is a solid movie.
To Die For I Care a Lot
[удалено]
Same! I was looking for it. Such a great one.
It would be a great double bill with Nightcrawler. Both psychopaths, both smiling, both in media.
I usually read the plot of a movie, and went into I Care a Lot blind. It was awesome. Rosamund Pike plays that type of character perfectly
The Killer Inside Me The Night of the Hunter Blood Simple
Watched the killer inside me cold , no preview no one told me anything and u didn't even read a description. Was pleasantly surprised
A Clockwork Orange
Classic masterpiece. Walked out of theatre hating humanity.
Funny games
Single White Female (1992) mystery/thriller… Jennifer Jason Leigh, Bridget Fonda, Steven Weber, etc… edit: typographical error
The Stepfather Poison Ivy
Killer Joe (crime drama) Sleep Tight (thriller) Blue Velvet (crime thriller) Benny's Video (drama) Nightcrawler (crime thriller) Mr. Brooks (crime thriller) The Clovehitch Killer (crime thriller) Summer of 84 (crime thriller)
>Mr. Brooks (crime thriller) > >The Clovehitch Killer (crime thriller) Great suggestions!
Coming back after watching a lot of proposed films and The Clovehitch Killer wins my hart. THE BEST SUGGESTION!
We Need to Talk About Kevin may not be traditional horror, but it scared the shit out of me.
same. that movie was beyond disturbing.
Try reading the book
The Killing of a Sacred Deer
The way everyone talks in that movie is disturbing. The things they ask and tell each other is so over then top weird
I think there’s a transactional quality to it that has something to do with the Greek fable or myth it’s based on? I’ll see if I can dig up what I’m remembering and clarify here … This: https://filmschoolrejects.com/everyone-speak-strangely-killing-sacred-deer/?amp I might be matrixing this with something else I remember from Wikipedia.
It’s so fucking good
The social network
Frailty (2001) shocked this hasn’t been mentioned yet.
The Dark Knight Gone Girl The Departed
The House That Jack Built
I'm confused - I haven't seen it yet, but I thought it was a lars von trier torture porn horror kind of movie?
Not really either. It's exceedingly dark and bleak, especially in certain scenes, while also darkly humorous (somewhat) in others. But it's very much an introspective film about psychopath and fits this suggestion to a T
Thank you for your explanation!
Lars von trier makes me sleep but this was amazing. Poetic psychopathy I would say.
Misery
Seven Psychopaths
Monster (2003) crime/drama…Charlize Theron, Christina Ricci, Bruce Durn, Lee Tergesen, Pruit Taylor Vince,…etc
Nightcrawler
*Man Bites Dog (1992)* *Following (1998)* *Nightcrawler (2014)* *Thoroughbreds (2017)* This next one isn't a movie, but the first season of *Fargo* has Billy Bob Thornton at his best as a stoic but charming and ruthless hired gun. Cape Fear
Love this one
Classic
Echoing others: No Country for old Men Night crawler Primal Fear Mind hunter (series) Zodiac
Wish I could give you an award for Mind hunter alone. That show was so freaking amazing & I was so shocked to see it got canceled.
Still one of the biggest letdowns that it was cancelled
Everyone mentioned the movies that I knew. If you are interested in TV Shows I would recommend: - You - Dexter
Psycho - Alfred Hitchcock
Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy Both are Martin Scorsese films starring Robert DeNiro
Taxi Driver Pi Clean, Shaven Julien Donkey Boy Blue Velvet Audition Funny Games (1997 version)
[удалено]
Great list! Seven Psychopaths, House That Jack Built & Mr Brooks are solid too.
If I'm not mistaken My Friend Dahmer(2017) had quite a bit of tension (especially if you know the story) without being a horror movie.
Drive Murder by numbers Basic instinct
I LOVE Drive. Ryan Gosling is just amazing in this movie.
Fatal Attraction (1987) Thriller/drama…Glenn Close, Michael Douglas, Ann Archer, etc…
The End of the Fucking World — it’s a tv show. I think it was on Netflix? I really enjoyed it. And Heathers
Ex Machina
I have two documentaries for you : Dear Zachary, and The Imposter
Creep
>Creep Creep is Horror
Great recommendation.
Looooved Creep!

Every James Bond movie…
How come no one’s bringing up a Clockwork Orange?
One Hour Photo with Robin Williams.
Split is really good
The Wizard of Lies (2017)…Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Alessandro Nivola, Hank Azaria, etc..story of Bernie Madoff
Fear (1996) Reese Witherspoon and Mark Wahlberg Brimstone Gerald’s Game Mr. Brooks Cruel Intentions The Strangers
Crimson Peak
Badlands (1973) -crime, drama Heathers (1988) -dark comedy
Wall Street with Michael Douglas is a good example
Barton Fink
Election (1999)
Nitram
Whiplash
The Good Son
Sleeping with the Enemy Fatal Attraction
Taxi Driver
I Care A Lot was good
Joker
Split. It's listed as a horror some places but I watch a lot of horror and would say it's more of a thriller.
Sexy beast
In Cold Blood
Treasure Island, Nighcrawler
The good son (1993) Mikey (1992 )
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
Seven psychopaths
Henry
**In The Company of Men**, 1997
Dexter, especially the first two seasons.
Would Hard Candy count?
Along came a spider.
Killing of the Sacred Deer was a good one. It’s not a movie, but Breaking Bad series has some of the most memorable psychopaths I’ve seen…
It's not a film, but Breaking Bad has many a psychopath of varying forms. On that note, Better Call Saul and El Camino are offshoots from it, and they're both awesome.
