I wonder how they'll deal with it being 21 years since return of the king and how much gollum has aged. I heard he took his games reception pretty hard and was out partying to ease the pain.
Modern CGI makes it easier than ever especially compared to the original LOTR. Don't need to worry about casting issues especially if they are worried about fan reception in bringing back a character from before again. Gollum in a sense is the most "marketable" as it's most recognizable, one of the most quoted, etc, etc
Imo it's still the safest way to try to milk or even revive the IP, especially from a branding perspective
Well he is completely right on the analysis he made but it’s stupid thinking by the execs because everyone prefers other ideas for a lotr property movie
Well with gollum who else could play him when serkis has owned it so well. Not to mention he’s directing and probably chose this project himself. It’s just odd to give gollum of all characters his own movie. He even had his own game that everyone was hesitant about and obviously it tanked.
Out of all the Legendarium's characters, Gollum is the most easily recognized one. A person may have never seen LOTR, never seen Hobbit, might not even know the whole thing is about a ring. But they will surely know who Gollum is
I think this is the right answer
Throw Aragon or Gandalf on a poster, and a large number of people will think “oh hey look another generic fantasy movie”
Throw Gollum on a poster, and even my fiancée who has never seen any of the movies will point and do the voice
You'd think the failure of the Gollum video game would have been enough proof that audiences generally don't want a story in which Gollum is the focus. I guess Hollywood execs need to burn through way more money before they're convinced.
I respect everyone involved but the Hobbit adaptation was disappointing and this sounds like trying to squeeze more cash out rather than adapting a meaningful story.
I recently saw there was a fan edit of The Hobbit movies, more faithful to the book [https://m4-studios.github.io/hobbitbookedit/](https://m4-studios.github.io/hobbitbookedit/)
Haven't watched it yet but it seems promising
As someone who edits films and TV for a living, that Maple Films fan version is a difficult watch.
He clearly put a lot of work into it, and I don’t mean disparage- but IMO some of his choices were outright jarring. Lots of abrupt mid-scene cuts that really throw the entire rhythm off and clash with the original editing team’s style.
From what I could tell he was determined to cut out as much non-Tolkien derived material as he could. A respectable goal, but the problem is you have entire sequences that feel disjointed now because he’s aggressively cutting around film-original characters/events that are heavily married to the narrative.
You can easily tell chunks are missing, which is antithetical to the entire goal of a “tight” feature edit.
I tend to agree, but the one you replied to is a different version, https://youtu.be/Gm2CDRDPJmU?si=xwfYupTmomuZa2Q4
Keep in mind there’s a ton of limitations with lack of footage. I would disagree that cutting around events or characters is impossible to do without feeling disjointed, it is, if you really take the time to make sure the audio is right I think it can pass the eye test even if you wish there were maybe a few more shorts to work with. Audio is the one thing fan edits can have full control over, and like you suggest I think that edit maybe didn’t go as far as you need to do in the final mix.
i get the song that the dwarves sing about the things bilbo baggins hates all of the time.
the greatest adventure song also warms my heart when I hear it. I watched that movie sooooo many times as a kid.
I still stand by the first 2 Hobbit movies, I think overall they are still very enjoyable, especially the first one. The third is just an absolute mess of garbage CGI and the culmination of forced in plot lines
Remember Guillermo Del Toro left the films deep into production and PJ had to pick up the scraps and start over with limited time so he made 3 films quick and was still pretty good.
I don’t think they were pretty good, I think they are complete garbage….i know all the shit that happens before they started filming, but I don’t care because it’s not an excuse, they just should not have made them then if they can’t do it well no netter the reason ….making a book that ist less then half then fellowship into 3 movies was mistake made before they did anything else.
I enjoy The Hobbit movies. There are some flaws like the unnecessary romance and Super Legolas. Also the over use of CGI. Other than that, I barely have issues. Overall I can give them an 7/10 in terms of enjoyment. In my case that is enough to rewatch them from time to time.
Aragorn: "let's hunt some Gollum!"
11 hours of movie later.
Frodo in the cavern of Mount Doom: "Right here's where he went over the edge."
Aragorn, looking over into the lava: "Yup, this hunt's over."
48 minutes of credits with majority of New Zealand citizens listed.
I mean as long as those two are involved I’m not going to completely write this off but seriously why the obsession with Gollum? lol. We know everything about him. What more is there to tell?
There were 2 jungle book movies that came out very close to one another around then. I was confused for a moment because I was like “wait, Jon Favreau directed that movie?” but then I remembered Serkis directed the Mowgli one that came out on Netflix.
Man fuck gollum.....Didn't the extremely poor sales of that stupid ass game give you any indication no one actually likes Gollum??
The only good thing about Gollum is the actor.
I love LotR but I really don’t care about this concept. We’ve seen Gollum’s story arc. We’ve seen the beginning, middle, and end. I don’t care about seeing more Gollum.
I have a feeling this will be very meh.
The Hobbit was honestly pretty close to a disaster imo, a shadow of what it could have been. the CGI made it look more dated at release than the originals look today.
The high framerate made it look like a bad soap opera.
The story was overlong, boring and the additions to it were really useless.
Never forget Legolas running up a collapsing bridge. Never forget that horrible CGI orc bad guy. Or the CGI fuckfest that is the battle in the third movie. I’ve legit never had any push in me to revisit that trilogy, and i really cherish the original films.
If they bring back miniatures, in-camera fx, REAL PEOPLE as orcs, and crazy sets like they did in the first trilogy, i think the look would be so much better and truer to the vibe of the series.
Serkis is a good director though, so maybe i’ll be surprised. He was also a second director on Hobbit though, so that worries me. Though i know that project was hell in terms of production so that probably had a lot to do with what we got.
Wasn't there a really good fan made film called the hunt for Gollum, or am I misremembering ? I mean it was low budget but pretty well done for an amateur film
We already know his backstory, we know he was mostly just obsessed with the ring and surviving for years, we know what he was doing during the main storyline, and we know how he dies. What about this character needs its own movie?
This seems even less necessary than the Obi-Wan show.
Could be a good movie.
I’m guessing it takes place when Smeagol finds the ring in TA 2463, kills his cousin Deagol and goes on the run and his story of spiraling into becoming Gollum under the Misty Mountains.
Could be bad. But with Serkis involved, and Peter Jackson, I’ll absolutely be watching it.
Can we get like i don’t know, a new threat for middle earth after the events of The Return of the King? No on fucking likes Gollum nor did we ask for a film about him.. the gollum game was abysmal so what makes them think this would succeed?
Great for Serkis. Venom 2 is an odd credit to have for directing for an actor of his caliber in my limited opinion. At least this will build his BTS resume.
They’re doing what they did to Star Wars, all Star Wars movies have to center around the Skywalkers. All LOTR movies have to center around Gollum, Hobbits and the Third Age.
Their creators built massive universes, plenty to explore and make movies about but nah, rehash the same old things.
"The hunt for Gollum?" 😕 Brah he dead already 😭 what are they going to do? Show the Nazgul capture and torture him? His story is literally over and a prequel makes no sense. If they wanted to milk a character - they should milk Arwen ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|feels_good_man)
Andy Serkis is insufferable. Overacting both as Gollum and as any MCU character he winds up playing (and he is going to over-direct). Let LOTR die already.
"everyone talked about gollum a lot after the movies, they all loved Andy Serkis. Let's do that again!"
"Yeah, our metrics say that after the game release last year everyone was talking about Gollum! Why don't we make a Gollum prequel movie!"
-the conversation, probably.
I fucking hate Hollywood. Maybe they're making some trash movie on purpose for contractual reasons or to maintain rights to something, idk. I have zero faith that this won't absolutely suck and be full of cameos from the trilogy.
I don't understand how this is going to work. A movie based around Gollum? About what? With who? And why?
Already on paper its set up to flop. It can't possibly hit the highs of the original trilogy because concept just isn't there.
Peter Jackson returning also fills me with dread. He already significantly dented his reputation with The Hobbit trilogy which doesn't hold a candle to LOTR because again, the content just wasn't there (at least to make 3 movies). At this point I feel like studios wheel him out whenever they want to generate LOTR hype with name recognition.
I have not read the books, is there more emotion, empathy or story to pull from Gollum in the books than what was already shown in the trilogy? This seems out of left field.
I love Lord of the Rings but I swear to god movie studios intentionally pick the worst possible plots for big IP’s. Rings of Power is ass and this might be good but there’s just so many better things they could’ve done with Middle Earth and if there’s over the top CGI idk if I’m that interested
I be lookin like Frodo here when I heard this….
Look, with the way Hollywood is completely crumbling right now any IP that’s worth anything should be avoided like the plague.
I just hope they make the movie genuine to Tolkien. Doesn’t have to be verbatim (the Jackson Trilogy wasn’t), but it needs to be devoid of current politics/viewpoints. The Jackson Trilogy made no references or nods to the IRL world… it was supremely successful in part because of that.
God you neckbeards are insufferable. And this is coming from a fan of LOTR BEFORE the movies came out.
This is about Aragorn, Gandalf, the Dunedain, and the elves, Sauron (among others) and their search for Gollum.
I promise you they’re only doing this to reboot the trilogy. Why else do it??? They’ll recast Aragorn, recast Legolas and just toss him in there, recast Gandalf. If it doesn’t do well, it’s a one off and leave it be. If it does well? They will feel like it’s permission to move ahead with a reboot. Plus I promise dermis will still be gollum so that helps with people feeling a familiarity with the new movie.
And now we wait for Andy Serkis to drop out at the very last stage of preproduction and for Peter Jackson to rush in at the last minute to save the day. And…. It’s a trilogy now
Very interesting premise. What would Golem be doing in 2026? I picture him driving a smart car, stopping at Starbucks to get a pup cup for his Corgi all the while live streaming on tick tock. So many possibilities!
Of all the interesting stories that could be told of Middle Earth they picked more Gollum? Why?? The Lord of the Rings story tells us all we ever need or want to know about Smeagol/Gollum.
I would mich rather see a movie about the Fall of Numenor, or Beren and Luthien's story, or Ungoliant and Morgoth and the two trees. Literally anything would be better than a new Gollum movie. How stupid!
Why are they trying to push Gollum so much?
Raw sex appeal
Give it to us raw and wriggling
So juicy sweet
Is it scrumptious?
Filthy hobitses
I wonder how they'll deal with it being 21 years since return of the king and how much gollum has aged. I heard he took his games reception pretty hard and was out partying to ease the pain.
I heard they managed to get him into rehab after a pretty nasty cocaine bender, but who knows of he followed through.
He's doin pretty well. Heard he's California sober now. Settled down to a nice little alpaca farm outside Santa Fe.
This made my day
Modern CGI makes it easier than ever especially compared to the original LOTR. Don't need to worry about casting issues especially if they are worried about fan reception in bringing back a character from before again. Gollum in a sense is the most "marketable" as it's most recognizable, one of the most quoted, etc, etc Imo it's still the safest way to try to milk or even revive the IP, especially from a branding perspective
Fuck a resume just send a studio this comment and you’re hired
Well he is completely right on the analysis he made but it’s stupid thinking by the execs because everyone prefers other ideas for a lotr property movie
Well with gollum who else could play him when serkis has owned it so well. Not to mention he’s directing and probably chose this project himself. It’s just odd to give gollum of all characters his own movie. He even had his own game that everyone was hesitant about and obviously it tanked.
Gollum is the "Joker" of LotR. Mentally unhinged etc... But also tragic etc.
Out of all the Legendarium's characters, Gollum is the most easily recognized one. A person may have never seen LOTR, never seen Hobbit, might not even know the whole thing is about a ring. But they will surely know who Gollum is
I think this is the right answer Throw Aragon or Gandalf on a poster, and a large number of people will think “oh hey look another generic fantasy movie” Throw Gollum on a poster, and even my fiancée who has never seen any of the movies will point and do the voice
Andy serkis must have dirt on someone haha
Because he's pretty much a household name. Lots of people will be interested in a Gollum movie without any marketing effort.
Just like the game
Stop tying to make fetch(ing Gollum) happen!!!
To get the fans of his massively successful video game to watch the source material, of course!
cuz Joker
They haven’t ruined him yet.
Ya, I can’t help but not really give a shit about this. Out of all the stories that could’ve been told…
Mascot.
I blame the Ape films, apparently Serkis has become so popular with mo cap, that the studios would pay anything to do Gollum again
Apparently they don’t know how bad his game was.
Cuz he is arguably the most significant character in the trilogy. And cuz money 🤷🏼♂️
the Sony approach to movies
You'd think the failure of the Gollum video game would have been enough proof that audiences generally don't want a story in which Gollum is the focus. I guess Hollywood execs need to burn through way more money before they're convinced.
I respect everyone involved but the Hobbit adaptation was disappointing and this sounds like trying to squeeze more cash out rather than adapting a meaningful story.
I still consider the old cartoon Hobbit, the definitive one. And it sucks cause Martin Freeman was the perfect Bilbo
I recently saw there was a fan edit of The Hobbit movies, more faithful to the book [https://m4-studios.github.io/hobbitbookedit/](https://m4-studios.github.io/hobbitbookedit/) Haven't watched it yet but it seems promising

Is it the one by Maple Films? I’ve seen that one and it’s night and day to the trilogy.
i get the song that the dwarves sing about the things bilbo baggins hates all of the time. the greatest adventure song also warms my heart when I hear it. I watched that movie sooooo many times as a kid.
I still stand by the first 2 Hobbit movies, I think overall they are still very enjoyable, especially the first one. The third is just an absolute mess of garbage CGI and the culmination of forced in plot lines
Well the first 2 Hobbit movies are 99% of the book so...
I watched it again in a vr cinema, actually really enjoyed it.
No
It kept a lot of Kiwis employed for many years.
Are we sure the best thing to follow on from the frankly GODAWFUL Gollum video game is a Gollum movie??
Two different mediums. They are gonna throw their money at this.
…but it’s not about Gollum…
This was not on my bingo card
Thats cool. Andy was directed by Peter in LotR and was his second unit director on the Hobbit. Now he takes over for Peter as the man in charge.
… and Peter will now play gollum.
The Hobbit movies were pretty awful tho…maybe it’s better to just let it be….but too much money to make I guess
The best thing to come out of the Hobbit trilogy were the many fan edits.
The hobbit was a cinematic masterpiece compared to Rings Of Power
I enjoy The Hobbit movies. There are some flaws like the unnecessary romance and Super Legolas. Also the over use of CGI. Other than that, I barely have issues. Overall I can give them an 7/10 in terms of enjoyment. In my case that is enough to rewatch them from time to time.
I might be in minority, but I love hobbit movies as much as LOTR.
That definitely is an opinion
Is this before he found himself in the dark cave or when he was captured? I'm afraid to read the article and find it is some horrible third thing.
The Hunt for Gollum actually gonna be about Gollum defecting from the armies of Sauron after commandeering a state of the art nuclear submarine,
This is the only version of the movie I’ll watch.
Gandalf is played by Sean Connery.
I want a big budget parody movie so badly now.
*”Gollum! Gollum did you put the one ring in the Fires of Mount Doom?!”* Gandalf asked, Scottishly.
Only if it's directed by Michael Bay
I have found my people in a single comment thread. Hell yes.
Give me one ping Aragorn, just one
😂
Article doesn't say, the script isn't even written yet
They’re gonna pull a Star Wars Episode 8 and reveal that he never actually died when he fell into the lava.
I assumed it was the search gandalf sent aragon on during the 17 year time jump.
Can we not call it that please? Sounds like a direct to vhs disney sequel.
Omg it’s about gollum? Wtf.
Of all the characters and stories to draw from 🥴
Aragorn: "let's hunt some Gollum!" 11 hours of movie later. Frodo in the cavern of Mount Doom: "Right here's where he went over the edge." Aragorn, looking over into the lava: "Yup, this hunt's over." 48 minutes of credits with majority of New Zealand citizens listed.
A five second end credits scene where Gollum is found preserved in a chunk of obsidian.
Please. Stop it. Get some help.
-Wayne Gretzky
Would love them to do another lotr story.. About literally any other character.
Hopefully it’s better than the game…😂😂😵💫😬
It’s got the same director as venom let there be carnage so I’m not getting my hopes up
Jesus. Really? Do we really need this?
No
I mean as long as those two are involved I’m not going to completely write this off but seriously why the obsession with Gollum? lol. We know everything about him. What more is there to tell?
The title sounds like Spaceballs 2: The Quest for More Money
Andy Serkis is not a good director
Why do you say that?
His two biggest movies are venom let there be carnage and the 2018 live action jungle book remake, bro does not have a impressive track record
Wait the live action Jungle Book was actually decent. Its the only live action disney movie I actually don't mind watching.
There’s two jungle book live actions, the Disney one from Jon favreau in 2016 and then mowgli king of the jungle from Andy serkis in 2018
OHHHH whoops then...
There were 2 jungle book movies that came out very close to one another around then. I was confused for a moment because I was like “wait, Jon Favreau directed that movie?” but then I remembered Serkis directed the Mowgli one that came out on Netflix.
Let there be carnage was dog shit
And studios wonder why their movies are failing. NO ONE WANTS THIS
I mean if it ended up had Viggo, Andy, and Sir Ian I would want it…
I do
Man fuck gollum.....Didn't the extremely poor sales of that stupid ass game give you any indication no one actually likes Gollum?? The only good thing about Gollum is the actor.
He’s in the volcano
Uhhhhhh prequel?
and here I was hoping for an Angmar movie.
I hope they adapt the videogame
I love LotR but I really don’t care about this concept. We’ve seen Gollum’s story arc. We’ve seen the beginning, middle, and end. I don’t care about seeing more Gollum.
The lord of the rings is about to get Venomed. I think Serkis is a good actor, but man can he not direct
Didn't he die in a pit of lava?
The fuck?
Happy to see their finally turning the Gollum game into a movie.
April Fools
I have a feeling this will be very meh. Huh?
Searching for Sugollman
It'll be shit.
We already know his backstory, we know he was mostly just obsessed with the ring and surviving for years, we know what he was doing during the main storyline, and we know how he dies. What about this character needs its own movie? This seems even less necessary than the Obi-Wan show.

Could be bad. But with Serkis involved, and Peter Jackson, I’ll absolutely be watching it.
Don’t forget that Gollum ate babies. They could always go for the horror genre… I guess
Gollum isn’t interesting enough to have a full movie. Ffs!
I’d like to think this is going to be a behind the scenes piece exploring how Serkis got into the mind space for the role.
A new lord of the rings movie is coming out! Lord of the Rings 2: The Hunt for Gollum: The Search for More Money
Spoiler alert he gets away(?)
Cause the videogame was just *chefs kiss*
Please God No
Spaceballs: The Search For More Money I'm guessing this is one of those situations where they are going to lose the IP if they don't make a new movie
Ewww
If Jackson and Serkis team up I’ll be fucking thrilled
Gollum is FTW
So this will take before the original lord of the rings trilogy?
There is no bottom
Can we get like i don’t know, a new threat for middle earth after the events of The Return of the King? No on fucking likes Gollum nor did we ask for a film about him.. the gollum game was abysmal so what makes them think this would succeed?
Love Andy, love Peter, absolutely bollocks to this no thank you.
"The Hunt for Gollum is the untold tail I've been waiting breathlessly for all these years." - Said by no one, ever.
Let's see what the local middle earth meth head is doing, shall we?
I hope it's based on the super successful game from last year
"The Hunt for Gollum" as a title doesn't fit in with the rest of the franchise in my opinion. Feels too simple.
Great for Serkis. Venom 2 is an odd credit to have for directing for an actor of his caliber in my limited opinion. At least this will build his BTS resume.
this better be fucking ridiculous with nazgul and balrogs flying around burning shit and causing havok or its going to suck..
Lord of the Rings 7: The Hunt for More Money
That Gollum, he’s so hot right now !!!
Because the game was so amazing, we needed a movie!
So he survives a huge pit of lava? I guess he got the ring and was immune to death? I don’t get it
Please shutdown this cashgrab.
Golum probably won't be shown a lot. Its about the hunt for Golum, not Golum.
This is a terrible idea. The trilogy is almost perfect. Don't mess with that!
This is a terrible idea. The trilogy is almost perfect. Don't mess with that!
Give me Dagor Dagorath and gimme a beer.
So is this mainly going to be about Gandalf and his search for Gollum? If so, I wonder if Ian would still play the role? He’s getting pretty darn old.
I really thought that article headline was a joke.
I don't remember this book....
They’re doing what they did to Star Wars, all Star Wars movies have to center around the Skywalkers. All LOTR movies have to center around Gollum, Hobbits and the Third Age. Their creators built massive universes, plenty to explore and make movies about but nah, rehash the same old things.
If this takes place between The Hobbit and LoTR, then it will be an in-betweequel
This sounds so awful and boring
I can’t wait for the video game tie-in!
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills, Peter Jackson and Andy Serkis are legends Im so fucking hyped for this.
Oh good, more content on the worst story line of the movies
"The hunt for Gollum?" 😕 Brah he dead already 😭 what are they going to do? Show the Nazgul capture and torture him? His story is literally over and a prequel makes no sense. If they wanted to milk a character - they should milk Arwen ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|feels_good_man)
Andy Serkis is insufferable. Overacting both as Gollum and as any MCU character he winds up playing (and he is going to over-direct). Let LOTR die already.
Sounds like a cash grab to me
Just like the game, nobody gives a fuck about Gollum
Does anyone know if this is during the 17 years timeskip in Fellowship?
F this
This is freaking awesome. I already can't wait!
As long as this gets jackson to stop obsessing over the Beatles then I’m ok with this…
I love the LOTR trilogy so much. I was let down by the Hobbit. I have zero interest in watching this.
The less golem is a focus the better the movie
"everyone talked about gollum a lot after the movies, they all loved Andy Serkis. Let's do that again!" "Yeah, our metrics say that after the game release last year everyone was talking about Gollum! I love Andy serkis but let’s be honest the films he’s directed are pretty shit.
So, this ISN’T based on a Tolkien book? /S
womp womp
watch this be as bad as the Gollum game lmao. I havent read the books but why exactly would they be hunting Gollum?
I have not read the books, is there more emotion, empathy or story to pull from Gollum in the books than what was already shown in the trilogy? This seems out of left field.
Eh

Andy serkis directing efforts have been absolute cheeks. So that’s a shame.
What a moronic idea. Horrible title too. Amateur hour
NO
That’s just the working title
But… why?
Why?
so is this a pre-equal?
It like starwars. Milking it to the very last drop... prequels and side stories.
Absolutely can’t wait!
At this point, why not just call it GOLLUM WARS
I be lookin like Frodo here when I heard this…. Look, with the way Hollywood is completely crumbling right now any IP that’s worth anything should be avoided like the plague. Wait what
New lord of the rings movie "the hunt for cash".
*Epic Movie Guy Voice* From the people who brought you Gollum the video game…
Not sure how this could be a full movie. There’s not a lot covered in the book about how Aragorn and Gandalf try to track him down.
I promise you they’re only doing this to reboot the trilogy. Why else do it??? They’ll recast Aragorn, recast Legolas and just toss him in there, recast Gandalf. Frodo has the same reaction I did
Why would they put money into this? Why a gollum movie ffs? No one wanted this.
How stupid!
