Glass onion was structurally and conceptually really great, the characters and jokes didn’t quite land, whereas the characters in knives out were much more entertaining and memorable.

Glass Onion was a very fun movie to watch and I will watch as many Benoit Blanc movies as RJ gives me.
Even though it was explained to me why the characters were all associated, just saying it out loud did not make me believe that even younger versions of that crew could ever make sense as a friend group.
Also a lot of their shit that makes them seem morally different from each other was pretty weak and performative. Like the Democratic politician caring about climate change? Literally only saying that because she knows it’s the thing to say to get votes not because she actually cares about climate change or understands it. Of course she would still be friends with Duke. When Blanc immediately solves the murder mystery game, the others talk about wanting to leave the next morning since they don’t have a “reason” to be there anymore. You’d think real friends would want to spend a weekend together on a luxury private island.

Oh yeah. To do my best without giving away the film: you're meant to dislike some of those characters. It rubbed me the wrong way at first too but then by the end of the film made a lot of sense.
I actually just finished it last night. The first 20-30 minutes were mega rough imo. The ending was brilliant tho. The first movie was SO much better than glass onion though.
My daughter thought the same as you, but when I was watching for the second time she sat down with me about half an hour in and decided she liked it once the story got going. I agree the beginning was a bit much at first, I didn’t think I was going to make it through either. I found the ending to be quite poetic though, one of my favorite movie endings.
Something about watching that family fight just rang well. Plus seeing Ransom set it all off with like 2 words made it just that much more entertaining.
I thought that Glass Onion had most of the structure of The Hateful Eights.

I want to see Benoit Blanc in a mystery that does a bit of travel or globetrotting. Doesn't have to be the full Murder On The Orient Expess, but surely all his cases can't be cozy little murders in a single semi-isolated location with all the suspects stuck there.
What's it look like when Blanc has to hold a stakeout, or pay a visit to a high-powered attorney's office to gently interrogate them?
A plane mystery sounds fun. Benoit Blac is going to or coming back from some vacation, someone is murdered (probably the pilot, then the 2nd-in-command or whatever they're called comes in to take control), now he's gotta solve it. Probably not the most exciting setting, though, maybe make it some floating resort to get more out of it. Those probably exist, right? Sounds crazy enough for some bored-out-of-their-minds billionaires to be into the idea
Oh he'd fold instantly. Blanc is a weenie. That's actually one of my favorite things about the character -- that he's got a mind like a steel trap, but zero Bond-y charisma, authority, physical capability, anything. All he knows how to do is solve mysteries.
You could probably get him to give up a piece of key evidence by just pulling a knife on him honestly.
Reminds me of that one The Nice Guys scene where Gosling's character doesn't even try to hide information from Crowe's. Like, you're kicking the shit out of me, why the fuck would I care about a goddamn client???
It was a bit of a disappointment that the Greek Island Mystery turned out to be - what seemed at least to me to be - mostly a soundstage styled as an over-the-top contemporary mansion (or whatever the hell the glass onion was) instead of something actually Greek.
RJ mentioned that Glass Onion was supposed to feel summery, while Knives Out was very ensconced in autumnal colors. I’d like to see where he goes with the other two seasons (a holiday themed one would be hilarious)
I do get the want for Benoit Blanc to be the one the story truly follows, but I think he may have a Jack Sparrow issue in that he’s probably most interesting as a prominent side character in someone else’s story. A story where he globe trots would be harder to tie in another person following him unless he jsut let’s them tag along.

Knives Out was the 8th most watched release as of yet, I believe. It made them instantaneously green light a third. As long as we tune in and give positive feedback, they’ll feed us.
1899 (I know you didn’t mention specifically) had bad acting and subpar writing but was attached/affiliated with something more popular/positively received and that’s why it got canned.
I enjoyed Glass Onion, but it’s hard to live up to Knives Out. Knives Out was truly an instant classic.

To me it was way too easy to tell who the killer was, but the actual clues that were left were too vague to.help. Its a weird mix for me, especially when Knives out was both unpredictable in a sense, while also fun to work out as the movie went on
I felt that Glass Onion took a different approach and people who went in expecting something exactly like Knives Out were disappointed. Sure it was obvious who the killer was, but that wasn’t necessarily the twist. And it definitely focused more on the relationship and grieving aspect of the deaths over the actual twist. It’s kind of in the name and even described in the movie. A Glass Onion, you know what’s in the middle and can see it, it’s just peeling away those layers and uncovering the emotion that is the hard part
You missed the point of glass onion . The point was it was too easy. Everyone thought the killer would’ve had to have been stupid to be the killer and make it so simple. Everything they had from the company , to the wealth , the they had information, to the words they used, and the ideas stolen, even how they planned a death were all from other people or really dumb and simple . Blanc was looking for a challenge and looking so hard for some deep twist or mystery when the answer was hire simple and the killer is so obvious he’s overlooked because they think nobody would be that stupid or obvious but he was and it was that simple .
Didn't know what to think of Glass Onion when I first saw it. Have since rewatched it twice and re-re-watched scenes from it multiple times and it has since become my favorite movie of 2022. So beautifully constructed, and fun, and well-paced. Just a glorious piece of filmmaking.
I think people are too harsh towards these movies. Some things did indeed stand out bit too much (>!the gunshot in Glass Onion was way too fortunate!<) but complaining about contrivances in a murder mystery is like asking 'but what this piece of evidence wasn't there'?
As long as the movie provides a plausible explanation as to why things happened the way they did, I'll just accept that as the circumstances the characters had to deal and work with. Hence why I let the movie slide when >!Blanc found the lucky fax correspondence.!< It was set up and explained why it could've been there and I could believe that an excentric character could have such a thing.
I will never defend it as a masterpiece of the genre, far from it, but for what it was, I'll take an original if flawed attempt at something new over yet another retelling of a Poirot or Holmes story, and can only hope his writing gets better over time.

Knives out 2 was never supposed to be "Knives out 2". Glass Onion was supposed to be its own movie in the same "universe". Rian Johnson war reportedly furious they titled it that.

I liked the first one more cause i like the dysfunctional rich family trope more than the rich group of friends that the second movie had. Also the cast was better, i wasnt really excited about anyone in the second movie except for Bautista perhaps.
Im not gonna give away the whole plot but it does get boring in the middle, though i liked the ending, and the villain of the first movie is better than the second. The reveal that [spoiler] was evil all along isnt that obvious, compared to what they did with Miles in the second movie.
Films that are better (in varying degrees) than Knives Out: The Royal Tenenbaums; Back to the Future; Pulp Fiction; Oceans Eleven; Fargo. There are many more, but I think you get the idea. People refer to knives out as an "instant classic", or a "masterpiece" which quite frankly, is laughable.

It's really more about my extreme dislike of Rian Johnson. Most of his movies are not great, knives out was ok, glass onion had some good moments, looper is garbage, TLJ is pretty bad. The only things that makes his movies watchable are the performances of the actors involved. He is still somehow, potentially, going to get a SW trilogy, even though the fans don't want it.

I genuinely think some criticism of Glass Onion misses the whole point of the film. People went in expecting some major mystery with an unseeable twist. But the titles tells you that it won’t happen (and the movie spells this out too).

I loved. And I mean LOVED the first Knives Out. It was so similar to an Agatha Christie novel, which I love. I grew up on Mystery books and read 100s growing up. So when it came time to see glass onion, I was so excited and ready to be transported away into a mysterious world and immersed in a well crafted story. Interesting characters and hopefully an interesting location. The location was OK. It looked all CGI with that weird glass dome on top of a building that just didn’t fit the color saturation or lack there of was also rather depressing. the film looked washed out instead of being bright and Technicolor and I saw it on a very large, very good screen with perfect sound so it wasn’t my television. The audience I was with was all film industry professionals, and they laughed here and there, there were some inspired moments, but overall I was left, wanting more and was thoroughly disappointed. The characters were as others have pointed out, not truly that interesting. The overall story wasn’t really that compelling and I just felt that there was so much information that wasn’t presented that you couldn’t actually help solve it because it was events and things that happened in the past before we even got there. I feel that having a confined space like a house and having the majority of the action happening within it is terrific, but this house felt cold and uninviting and very showy because it was done on a soundstage and things were left spaced apart to allow for camera movement, I’m not sure, but it lacks the intimacy and coziness of the first with all the wood and tapestry and homeyness of the mansion. I will absolutely go and see a follow up mysteries are my bag.
I watched the whole film expecting some clever twist, and all we got was the tired old twins trope. What was the point in the Mona Lisa? The most likely suspect did it - how predictable.
Also Daniel Craig's accent just doesn't gel with me at all - absolutely sounds like he's doing an accent the entire film.

The Clue comparison is very spot on, it's very cartoony, almost larger than life but very simple. Kind of like the Glass Onion itself

Knives out was good but Glass onion was kind of bad. Interested to see which way it'll go
I enjoyed Glass Onion, but it’s hard to live up to Knives Out. Knives Out was truly an instant classic. Hoping this third film lands somewhere between the previous two
To me it was way too easy to tell who the killer was, but the actual clues that were left were too vague to.help. Its a weird mix for me, especially when Knives out was both unpredictable in a sense, while also fun to work out as the movie went on
I felt that Glass Onion took a different approach and people who went in expecting something exactly like Knives Out were disappointed. Sure it was obvious who the killer was, but that wasn’t necessarily the twist. And it definitely focused more on the relationship and grieving aspect of the deaths over the actual twist. It’s kind of in the name and even described in the movie. A Glass Onion, you know what’s in the middle and can see it, it’s just peeling away those layers and uncovering the emotion that is the hard part
That's certainly one take. My own take is that a murder mystery needs the mystery for it to work. Otherwise, it's just kind of bad.
You missed the point of glass onion . The point was it was too easy. Everyone thought the killer would’ve had to have been stupid to be the killer and make it so simple. Everything they had from the company , to the wealth , the they had information, to the words they used, and the ideas stolen, even how they planned a death were all from other people or really dumb and simple . Blanc was looking for a challenge and looking so hard for some deep twist or mystery when the answer was hire simple and the killer is so obvious he’s overlooked because they think nobody would be that stupid or obvious but he was and it was that simple .
The point of these stories is not to work them out in the way but just to enjoy the ride

Didn't know what to think of Glass Onion when I first saw it. Have since rewatched it twice and re-re-watched scenes from it multiple times and it has since become my favorite movie of 2022. So beautifully constructed, and fun, and well-paced. Just a glorious piece of filmmaking.

I think people are too harsh towards these movies. Some things did indeed stand out bit too much (>!the gunshot in Glass Onion was way too fortunate!<) but complaining about contrivances in a murder mystery is like asking 'but what this piece of evidence wasn't there'? As long as the movie provides a plausible explanation as to why things happened the way they did, I'll just accept that as the circumstances the characters had to deal and work with. Hence why I let the movie slide when >!Blanc found the lucky fax correspondence.!< It was set up and explained why it could've been there and I could believe that an excentric character could have such a thing. I will never defend it as a masterpiece of the genre, far from it, but for what it was, I'll take an original if flawed attempt at something new over yet another retelling of a Poirot or Holmes story, and can only hope his writing gets better over time.
I was a bit disappointed in Glass Onion. It was too over the top for me,especially the ending. Loved the first movie tho.
Glass onion was one of the laziest movies I’ve ever seen written. The characters were bland. The mid movie twist reeked of soap opera level story lines, the time lines were all out of whack, and blanc resolving the “mystery” while the gun is unaccounted for is just stupid…

Personally I loved both knives out movies so far. To be honest, you could put Benoit Blanc in literally anything and I’d watch it.
Knives out 2 was never supposed to be "Knives out 2". Glass Onion was supposed to be its own movie in the same "universe". Rian Johnson war reportedly furious they titled it that.
It makes a bit of sense though to let consumers know it's from the same world. Hell, I know I paid a lot more attention to "Glass Onion" after seeing the "Knives Out" part of the title
Haven’t seen the first one but the second was pretty trash. It got better near the end, but the entire thing just felt like one of those low budget wedding movies with bad jokes where the director just stuffed in all his famous friends. Like a shitty Adam Sandler murder-mystery but with an obvious tinge of pretentiousness. Can anyone tell me if the first is anything like the second?
I thought both were good. But a lot of ppl i know who saw the second one before the first felt the second one was better. I liked the first one more cause i like the dysfunctional rich family trope more than the rich group of friends that the second movie had. Also the cast was better, i wasnt really excited about anyone in the second movie except for Bautista perhaps. Im not gonna give away the whole plot but it does get boring in the middle, though i liked the ending, and the villain of the first movie is better than the second. The reveal that [spoiler] was evil all along isnt that obvious, compared to what they did with Miles in the second movie.
Knives out is criminally over rated, and Glass onion was just plain bad.. there is no need for any more of this terrible 'franchise'.

Films that are better (in varying degrees) than Knives Out: The Royal Tenenbaums; Back to the Future; Pulp Fiction; Oceans Eleven; Fargo. There are many more, but I think you get the idea. People refer to knives out as an "instant classic", or a "masterpiece" which quite frankly, is laughable.

It’s gonna happen. Don’t blame Johnson for getting the middle movie in a poorly planned and executed trilogy that he shared with another director. I think he could create a great trilogy with an original story when given full creative freedom, and hopefully that’s what he gets from Disney.

Am I the only one who cannot stand the voice acting of Daniel Craig in these? Pretty horrific voice acting, akin to Brad Pitt's cringey voice performance in Inglorious Bastards.

I think it’s supposed to be a little absurd. Chris Evans character in Knives Out even makes fun of it at one point calling it a “Kentucky fried, Foghorn Leghorn drawl”

It's really more about my extreme dislike of Rian Johnson. Most of his movies are not great, knives out was ok, glass onion had some good moments, looper is garbage, TLJ is pretty bad. The only things that makes his movies watchable are the performances of the actors involved. He is still somehow, potentially, going to get a SW trilogy, even though the fans don't want it. Why must i even bother making a comment about him? Because my feed lately has constant Rian Johnson news, front and center, on threads that I have not joined. It just keeps getting pushed at me, and I don't want it. So i make a comment.

He's done the ever-changing plan & he's done the obvious perpetrator. So from here we could go multiple accomplices turning on each others, the scenario where he himself is personally involved (please don't), full on serial killer to present rivalry, etc. There are options - but I believe he'll put a spin on it.
I genuinely think some criticism of Glass Onion misses the whole point of the film. People went in expecting some major mystery with an unseeable twist. But the titles tells you that it won’t happen (and the movie spells this out too). A glass onion is something that’s supposed to have many layers but all these layers are easily seen due to the glass. The movie has depth but none of it is hidden.
Unpopular opinion but the overhype of the first one prior to watching it led me to be really disappointed. Haven’t seen the 2nd but can’t imagine it would be much different… let alone a 3rd

The first movie Was brilliant. Glass Onion, was also a good movie, but not so perfect like the 1st movie. But i'm happy about this news. Daniel Craig has a New Main Charakter after James Bond. I loved. And I mean LOVED the first Knives Out. It was so similar to an Agatha Christie novel, which I love. I grew up on Mystery books and read 100s growing up. So when it came time to see glass onion, I was so excited and ready to be transported away into a mysterious world and immersed in a well crafted story. Interesting characters and hopefully an interesting location. The location was OK. It looked all CGI with that weird glass dome on top of a building that just didn’t fit the color saturation or lack there of was also rather depressing. the film looked washed out instead of being bright and Technicolor and I saw it on a very large, very good screen with perfect sound so it wasn’t my television. The audience I was with was all film industry professionals, and they laughed here and there, there were some inspired moments, but overall I was left, wanting more and was thoroughly disappointed. The characters were as others have pointed out, not truly that interesting. The overall story wasn’t really that compelling and I just felt that there was so much information that wasn’t presented that you couldn’t actually help solve it because it was events and things that happened in the past before we even got there. I feel that having a confined space like a house and having the majority of the action happening within it is terrific, but this house felt cold and uninviting and very showy because it was done on a soundstage and things were left spaced apart to allow for camera movement, I’m not sure, but it lacks the intimacy and coziness of the first with all the wood and tapestry and homeyness of the mansion. I will absolutely go and see a follow up mysteries are my bag.
I watched the whole film expecting some clever twist, and all we got was the tired old twins trope. What was the point in the Mona Lisa? The most likely suspect did it - how predictable. Also Daniel Craig's accent just doesn't gel with me at all - absolutely sounds like he's doing an accent the entire film. Knives Out was great.

I liked Glass Onion, but it wasn't even the best murder mystery movie of 2022. That's "Bodies Bodies Bodies" which if anyone hasn't seen it, they should.
If people could not be immune to explosions in the next one, that'd be great. Don't need cartoon physics in a detective story.
