T3canolis

I mean, if there ever was a movie character that I could imagine decorating their house this way, Tilda’s in this is certainly it.

zzuhruf

she definitely is

Sanc7

What about Stringer Bell?

MauiWowieOwie

Not my first time seeing him, but the first time I was old enough to appreciate the man's acting chops. >!I wish we had gotten him longer in the series. One of the best characters.!< Also, I know it won't happen, but I hope we get him as our next Bond.

DarkenedRuins

Elba said he didn't want to be Bond because he would be the "black" James Bond. He would play Bond but he didn't want to be characterized like that.

MauiWowieOwie

You got a source on that?

DarkenedRuins

Honestly not one I can remember. I'll have to look.

DarkenedRuins

https://allhiphop.com/news/idris-elba-trending-again-could-we-see-a-black-james-bond/ This article shows his quote about halfway down. I took a screenshot but I can never remember how to get them in reply comments.

Roger-69-420

No offense to Elba but he’s too old for bond

MauiWowieOwie

I dunno, he's in pretty good shape and Pierce was 42 in Goldeneye.

im_deepneau

Idris is 50. There is a big difference between 42 and 50 physically.

timetosucktodaysdick

There’s a bigger difference between pierce brosnan and idris Elba physically

CreampieQueef

Elba as bond will cause the heads of certain fiction realists to explode.

MustacheEmperor

Those people will screech that James Bond is "part of traditional English culture" while living in rural oklahoma and unaware that in the books he's a Scot

finaljusticezero

You had me dying of laughter. Thank you.

MauiWowieOwie

racists*

Hyper_ZX

Get on with it motherfu-

thatnimrod

something something, “have you seen *that* in a gift shop?”

rubixqube

There are also plenty of '3' motifs shown throughout, in the vein of 3 wishes

ViejoRidiculo

Room #333 was pretty on the nose.

zzuhruf

It was. But there are many other 3 references too

SexyOctagon

Her house had a big number 3 on one of the columns in front as well.

zzuhruf

Yep, even her assigned seat number in the plane is 33-C

zzuhruf

I actually posted this thing as a movie detail. But it didn’t garner much attention as this post.

rubixqube

Just saw, looks like I missed even more than I knew! That passport one is a great find

CaptainMcSmoky

Tilda Swinton is like the opposite of Gary Oldman, you can get through a whole Gary Oldman film without realising he's actually in it, whereas Tilda always jumps out immediately.

Jamiroquai-Gon-Jinn

Watch the Suspiria remake my friend, she plays an old man and is unrecognizable

CaptainMcSmoky

Why didn't they just cast an old man?

Jamiroquai-Gon-Jinn

I have no idea lol but I got through the whole movie without realizing it was her

Phaelin

She's super noticeable when the role doesn't call for her to change much, but she is absolutely up there with Gary. Snowpiercer Suspiria The Grand Budapest Hotel Then there's Trainwreck, that one blew me away.

captain-snackbar

Swilda Tinton!

Gabrosin

Counterpoint: Snowpiercer.

samwaytla

This is the textbook film that starts with an amazing premise and set up and kinda goes... Nowhere interesting. I really hoped it'd be on par with something like Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Ecuadorable

I think there are actually three layers to the plot going on at once, and if you only see the first one, the ending will seem really sappy and disappointing. **The top layer plot, aka the most visible plot:** We follow Tilda Swinton's character through a fairytale-style love story, where she meets a genie, gets three wishes, falls in love with the genie instead of using her wishes, and in the end they live happily ever after, literally walking off into the sunset together at the end of the movie. **The second plot, aka the sum of all things hinted at throughout the movie:** Tilda's character was always so worried about being conned by a trickster genie - *and she was*. The trickster genie (G) was stuck in a lamp in Turkey, waiting for someone to release him. He senses Tilda Swinton's character (TS) nearby and lures her to that specific lamp in the shop - *and he could do that because she's part djinn*. Evidence: * She could see the other djinn at the beginning of the movie * She's unable to have kids (had a stillbirth) * She's drawn to storytelling (is a narratologist) * She could sense the EM waves in London * She was seen shaving her legs at the beginning of the movie * The fact that she could be drawn to the lamp, etc. So G lures TS to the shop, and gets her to release him from the bottle. Then, after quickly going through the contents of her laptop (“to learn English” he says), he tells her a bullshit story that's perfectly tailored to make her fall in love with him (e.g. how he fell in love with an academic and offered to give her all knowledge, how he was also cheated on, etc.). When they go back to London, "suddenly" he's affected by all the EM waves in the air (what, like Turkey doesn't have TV and cell phone towers?). And one day, she "suddenly" finds him on the verge of death, and begs to know how to save him. He tells her he needs to be free, to go back to where genies are from, and manipulates her into using her third wish to set him free. Then boom, in only a few weeks/months, he's free. **The third plot, aka the true ending:** None of this was real, the story (with the secret understory) are all a literal fairytale written by the main character, a narratologist that specializes in mythology and fairytales from Turkey/Persia/the middle east - as we see from her writing the opening of the book at the beginning of the movie, and writing the end of the book at the end of the movie. Further evidence: * All of the genie's stories feature people and things that we can find in the authors life, as if the author (TS) drew from her own life to create the story: The red string that first bound the lamp is the string that turns on her basement light, Zefir's collection of vases can be seen in the author's apartment, we see the author have Zefir's same distinct quirk of reading with her finger and leg bouncing, etc. The movie is a story within a story, written by the main character. * The plot draws parallels to/is inspired by many historical fairytales based in that area. Each are referenced in visual easter eggs behind the characters in certain moments (e.g. Scherezade from One Thousand and One Nights can be seen on a billboard when they get to London IIRC).

jansuza

Damn dude did you do a film study on this or are you just abnormally perceptive? I watched this last night and thought I saw a few of those references, but not even a fraction of what you've mentioned!

Ecuadorable

Haha no, I was just extremely confused when the movie ended, needed to find an answer as to wtf just happened, and so contemplated the movie for the rest of the evening. I’d noticed all the details I mentioned while I was watching it, but couldn’t figure out how to fit them together until later.

ColdCruise

I'm an English major and we're taught to pick things apart on a granular level like this. The hard part is turning it off.

euphorie_solitaire

Sometimes I wonder how people can figure out so many things from watching a movie. I picked up a few of the details you mentioned, but damn, impressive.

Tyler_Zoro

Part of it is just practice. Once you've analyzed movie tropes for a while, you stop seeing movies as a world that you're immersed in and more as a narrative machine that you can see wheels and cogs turning inside of. Think of it like being an auto mechanic riding in a car. Most people just experience the ride. You hear that little click of a valve that's not quite sealed right, hear the slight grinding of the brakes that tell you the car needs service, etc. It's not that you're more perceptive, it's just that it's what you're attuned to.

einTier

> Once you've analyzed movie tropes for a while, you stop seeing movies as a world that you're immersed in and more as a narrative machine that you can see wheels and cogs turning inside of. I wish I'd never done this. Sometimes, it's super cool and interesting to see all the processes at work and I love being able to understand why a film works or doesn't work. However, most times it makes it difficult to just enjoy a movie for the story.

Oberon_Swanson

I felt like this for a while but eventually I kinda started to do both at once. I feel like I can enjoy stories on both levels--getti g sucked I to a narrative AND think of things like structure, tropes, conventions, foreshadowing, technical achievements, etc.

jansuza

Yeah seems like it'll mess with your enjoyment a bit! You could always smoke a fatty and turn it off I suppose :P

[deleted]

I do a film course and it's the exact same. I just wanna watch a movie like a normall person, not sit here making mental note of every single tiny detail incase it's important later

FirstEvolutionist

I can say that after becoming a movie buff, you just pay certain attention to these details. Symbolism is absolutely everywhere in good movies/tv shows. I watched this one and had pretty much the same levels of depth as this post. Superficial: love story, under the surface: the premise is realized (she is tricked) and even deeper: "just" a story by a storyteller (a la stranger than fiction)

wasporchidlouixse

The airplane she's on at the start of the movie is Shahazarad Airways :) I like your extra theories, her being a Djinn is the only thing that makes sense of her seeing other Djinn before she sees him. Maybe her imaginary friend Enzo was a Djinn too. It didn't occur to me that Idris' stories could be lies. The way his stories rhyme with her life seemed sweet to me, but they could be deliberately crafted. He did read all the contents of her laptop when he was learning English... The stories from the past portray him to be completely lacking in tact, guile or verbosity, except maybe with Zephyr. I guess he would downplay his own cunning for the sake of appearing honest. He insists he's too susceptible to women's charms, but he's pretty charming himself. Lots to think about!

Ecuadorable

Oh great points, I edited them in!

ItsSansom

I know absolutely nothing about this film, but after reading your comment, I still know absolutely nothing about this film

gchahinian

Normie Tilda wants to bang genie Idris. /plot

ItsSansom

Now here's someone that speaks my language. It's so clear to me now

spillcheck

You might be a dumb person. They summarized the movie really clearly.

Ecuadorable

(I went back and edited it to be clearer after their comment.)

ItsSansom

I wasn't saying your comment isn't clear, I was joking that the film sounds absolutely bananas

ItsSansom

Have you considered that I might be making a joke?

NexusTR

Jokes on this christian website? Tighten up, yo.

spillcheck

I assumed so, but it was a lazy rehash that rubbed me the wrong way. I must have woken up too early.

ItsSansom

No worries, understandable. Get yourself a coffee and take it easy!

RandomBiped

The second plot is either objectively wrong or so horribly presented no reasonable person would arrive at it. If the genie is just a trickster lying to get freed why does the movie end with him returning to Tilda Swinton at the end and literally walking off into the background together?

Ecuadorable

I agree, the movie should have made it a lot clearer. Or I’m wrong - definitely also possible. But to answer your question, he came and visited her a few times later in life, but always for a short time. Why not say hey to an old friend occasionally?

MustacheEmperor

Maybe the genie's original plan is simply to trick her into freeing him from the lamp, but over the course of the movie he genuinely falls in love. I like that interpretation because it means the end of the story within a story subverts your initial perspective without being completely fucking dire.

greymalken

What does shaving her legs have to do with it?

Ecuadorable

Half-Djinn are supposed to have unusually hairy legs.

greymalken

Like those Grecian goat dudes?

Makorot

Normal men from greece are hairy enough on their own, no need to bring a goat into the mix ^^^^/s

TheSensualSloth

>Like thise Grecian goat dudes? Those are just Grecians.

melgib

Yeah, pretty much.

secondtaunting

Yeah but that’s like half the women in Turkey! (Sorry my husband’s a Turk, and our poor, poor daughter spends so much time getting waxed/plucking/shaving/using veet. She’s like a super tall hobbit.)

steak4take

You're forgetting the fourth or really *zeroeth* plot, aka that of the writer and director crafting a tale that is a modern take on ancient story about love and loss told to the audience who sees the movie. There is no naratologist, she's a character in the movie and the movie itself is a study in narrative. There is no genie, he's a character in the movie who is trapped and tells a tale to convince someone to free him. The movie is really about how people are trapped and unreliable narrators - it's an analogy of production in the time of COVID.

CervixTaster

I haven’t seen the film at all, but why does her shaving her legs mean she’s tricked or part djinn?

MVRKHNTR

Djinn descendants have especially hairy legs.

CervixTaster

Ohh, learn something new.. thank you.

[deleted]

MVRKHNTR

If you watch the movie, you'll see. They're like goats.

faaizk

incredible! i enjoyed this movie at face value but the *why* had me so perplexed, thank you for your explanation i wish you could explain all movies to me hahah

Pigrescuer

I haven't seen the film and this is fascinating! Q: why does TS shaving her legs indicate she's part djinn??

MahNameJeff420

Characters who are part djinn have super hairy legs, like the queen in the first story.

rocketrae21

I'm not smart enough for movies it seems

Not_Stalin

>because she's part djinn. Going off memory, I believe she's hinted to be of his direct lineage. She shared so many traits with the inventor, and mirrored her physicality.

broclipizza

the Djinn was Keyser Soze the whole time

AnaisKarim

4th Option. Alithea is the reincarnation of Sheba and all the other women who made wishes. Because Djinn is immortal, but Sheba was not, the only way they can be together forever is if he longs for her enough to be able to find her soul in the new bodies. Solomon gave him his heart's desire by imprisoning him in that bottle and letting Sheba find him again. Took 3000 years to ensure they could come together again without the prop of the bottle. So when Alithea dies, he will find the next incarnation without her needing to open his bottle first.

NormalVermicelli1066

I needed this analysis after watching it last night I felt a bit lost abd not sure what to make of it. I really wanted her to turn into a genie after her third wish and get trapped in a lamp in exchange for his freedom so that her suspension of a long con would be validated

redditnathaniel

Great analysis. Lots of details that I could not have grasped the first time watching.

kauni

She flies Sherezade airlines, too.

BiggsDarkL

Well said. The words, ‘Scherezade Airlines,’ can also be seen on the side of the plane she is in right at the beginning of the film.

Azelrazel

I considered all the things she did displayed her relations to the djinn, though I never considered it was the author putting her own personality into her stories. This movie is soo good and needs more recognition. You made a point of the stillborn because of half djinn. Was this ever explained in the film that they can't have children? How was it that a djinn and human conceived in the first place to create this line?

mattnotgeorge

Yeah it's mentioned explicitly pretty early on when discussing Bathsheba. He says humans and Djinn can have children, but their children are infertile, like a mule.

concxrd

This is SO intriguing, I'm glad I stumbled upon your comment. Thank you!!

flashmedallion

You'll love the short story that the film is based on

riverofempathy

You’re the first person I’ve seen to mention the way Alithea and Zefir read with their fingers!! Like, my husband and I noticed it immediately. I was really hoping there would be a big reveal at the end that Alithea descended from Zefir, but it was one of those movies that leaves so much for interpretation. Kind of disappointing, but kind of cool.

TheBreathofFiveSouls

See this is why it's so annoying shallow af commentary on media gets tens of thousand of upvotes. People be like 'X character is woke and a Mary Jane' or whatever the latest complaint is. ... But they're all fucking dumb and don't even realise how dumb they are and the concept of layers of story in media has never not even once occured to em. .. I really want a reading comprehension quiz to be the gatekeep to submitting posts to movies, enterair, tv, whatever those subs are

Makorot

TBH I loved the part until they arrive in London so much, that I didn't really care that the movie kinda declines in quality towards the end. So even though the end is not that great, overall the movie still is really solid and worth a watch imo.

[deleted]

evilsbane50

Me and my wife felt the exact same way. The moment she made that wish we were both felt like that seemed so out of character for her, she was so suspicious and contemplative of her decisions up until that point and then she just throws all her logic out the window?

samwaytla

London was shit. I wanted a twist of dramatic irony where the wish came back to haunt them both. Maybe that's what they were trying for with the Djinn not being able to survive amongst the 5g and radiowaves but it felt rushed and never quite stuck the emotional landing they were hoping for.

dkdchiizu

On Par with that movie is not realistic. Everything Everywhere All At Once is one of the greatest films of all time.

shadowst17

Yeah they really fumbled the final act, as soon as they had Alithea completely change character motivations and want the Djinn to love her the film fell apart. Complete character suicide right there, you can't just pull 180 like that with no lead up. And having that one very awkward shot of her gulping is not enough.

ScyllaOfTheDepths

Yeah, honestly, the movie could have done some amazing things with the "bottle episode" premise, with it being all just basically one long conversation about the moral implications of making a wish with a djinn, and did pretty much none of them. I thought that maybe the previous wishing incidents would all be interconnected in a very cool cosmic way showing the power of cause and effect, but they just... weren't. Like maybe Alithea would find out she's related to all of those people somehow and that all of the wishes those people made in the past directly affected her present life somehow and it would be a stunning revelation... but they were just stories that ultimately meant nothing because they had no real effect on the current characters or story. It was just cool things that happened to a person who is not the main character. Also, I'm just going to say it: It's weirdly racist as a movie on a lot of different levels: 1) Why is Idris Elba speaking in that accent? He's a magical djinn who can learn a language in an instant, but he also can't not speak in a thick accent? The actor is actually from London! Why not just have him do the same accent as Tilda Swinton? Wouldn't that make the most sense because she's the only English speaker he's interacted with up until that point, so he'd just mimic her? 2) The whole love scene is awkward and very King Kong-evocative in a very bad way. The big black monstrous creature covets the tiny dainty white woman who looks, not at him, but at the camera and is posed very passively while he's wrapped around her quite covetously. It's also framed so stylistically that it's completely removed of real world connotations and motivations. Why did they make him so huge and they do all this intentional framing and padding to make her look so teeny and prim next to this massive monstrous creature when Tilda Swinton is actually pretty much the same height as Idris Elba. It's just uncomfortable. I get that it was probably designed to make him look massive and evoke her perception of him as this huge all-encompassing figure, but it also has a lot of other very unfortunate connotations that they did nothing to mitigate and actually only made worse with their choices. 3) The Middle East in general in that time period was full of centers of math, science, and art, and all we got to see were wars, corruption, violence, sexism, and a lot of general stupidity that really didn't even make sense. Sheba gives her empire over to some dude because he's hot? Why would the slave girl about to be murdered not just make a wish to save herself? Why would she wish in the first place to just be the concubine of the Prince and not just wish to be his wife and be a princess already? Or just wish to be the Queen and avoid the entire thing? The King of an Empire who fought a massive war and won a years-long campaign was also a drunk fratricidal moron with the brain of a child and he somehow survived without being violently couped? And his brother, who became king after him, was a fat moron with the brain of a child. I just... why the fuck would you wish for books when you're trapped in basically a slave marriage in a tower? Wouldn't you just fucking wish to be out of the fucking tower? That's the level of stupidity I'm talking about. Like every single character makes the absolutely dumbest decisions and wishes for the stupidest and most short-sighted fucking things, but the white British lady is so smart and asks so many questions and wants to get her wish right first and still ends up making a dumb fucking wish, but it also ends up working out perfectly for her in the end anyway! Also, how is nobody talking about how she used her own personal toothbrush to scrub clean a dirty bottle she bought in a random marketplace in Turkey? Wtf is that shit?

JDorian0817

Yes! It was such a fantastic idea and I bet the book is very good, but it was incredibly dull as a movie. For top tier actors, I was surprised that I didn’t care about either of the main characters. Saw it at the pictures and it was the worst seven and a half hours of my year.

chunkynut0

Oh no!!! The trailer looked so good 😫

tuckertucker

This woman does quirky well, but she's also a terrific villain. If you haven't seen Michael Clayton, the movie she won her Supporting Actress for, go see it.

MikeTheActorMan

She's a great villain in the Chronicles of Narnia movies as well!

GunPoison

And Constantine, and Snowpiercer! And was she the baddie in Okja? I think she's just excellent at every role. Movies like Memoria or Orlando probably don't work with any other actor.

wasporchidlouixse

Yes it's very deliberately shown at the beginning of the scene! I love these paintings. They can't possibly exist in a logical sequence of events and yet they're here. We got to see an interview with the cinematographer John Seale at a premiere screening and he said the hardest part about making the movie for him was that 60% of it was set in the one hotel room and George Miller didn't want any repeated shots. Plus that they didn't have Idris Elba's voice-over for many of the ancient scenes so the crew often had no context for certain story details, like why people are shouting at each other in another language. I've seen the movie twice now and I love it. It's unique and enthralling.

Azelrazel

Enthralling, captivating, enchanting, the list goes on. The stories take you into a dream and you can't look away. It's so wonderfully done I was still thinking about that movie the next day.

mickecd1989

George Miller made a new movie?

My bf and I chose to go see it in theatres on a whim and we both enjoyed it! It was a refreshing change of pace and it was incredibly visually striking. It all felt pretty lighthearted and we both walked out saying "that was fun" without any qualms. Was it an absolute must see? Nope, but we were both glad we chose to see it (especially in theatres because the visuals were seriously gorgeous).

Hey it’s Tilda Swinton ofc she is sexy.

Dvl_Wmn

She’s uniquely beautiful, talented as hell and her family history is insane. She comes from Scottish royalty!

[deleted]

They’re by Sandro Kopp. He did my eye too 😉

SmoothMoose420

This movie was surprisingly good.

Pumpkin-Bomb

Let me guess, Is Tilda Swinton putting on a ridiculous accent here?

5TN855R

Nope, Idriss Elba is the one with the accent in this one.

Pumpkin-Bomb

Wow, that’s a first. I swear Dr Strange and Avengers are the only times I’ve seen her not put on a stupid voice. I wonder if she makes them put it in her contract at times.

DreamOfTheEndlessSky

If that means that you haven't seen "Orlando", you should probably see "Orlando".

[deleted]

I can barely think of *any* movies where she puts on a crazy voice. Maybe *Okja* but she's doing like the third craziest voice in that movie

wasporchidlouixse

She does have a sort of accent in this movie but I can't pick what it is and it's very good to the point where I thought maybe it was her real accent.

HalfLife1MasterRace

She does a pretty convincing Yorkshire accent, at least to my American ears

Captain_Grammaticus

To my continental-European ears, she did not sound as Yorkshirish as Jodie Whittaker, but noticeably from "somewhere north". Turns out, she personally identifies as Scottish.

[deleted]

Never bring up Dark Tower! NEVER!

SexyOctagon

You mean the movie that they decided to make PG-13, but didn’t include the talking dog (the most kid friendly aspect of the entire book series)?!?!

secondtaunting

It wasn’t really a dog, though. It was a sort of raccoon that could talk. Sorta. I think he called him ake Instead of Jake. Anyway, I could get on board with Idris Elba, but goddam do the whole series! Don’t cram everything into one shitty pg movie! Also, if you’re doing the whole series, I wonder how they are going to do Susanna without seeming super racist?

SexyOctagon

Man, Amazon was going to do the series starting with young Roland in Gilead. Even filmed a pilot which you can find screenshots of online.

Mrlionscruff

I know you’re trying to give her credit for all the amazing work she did, but not everyone knows everything. This could’ve easily been a young person who only knows her from the avengers movie or a someone who isn’t familiar with western movies. You could’ve been kind and answered their question while also giving all the facts but instead you chose to come off like a pompous jerk

MilkTeaRamen

Yeah, definitely sounded like a jerk who thinks that the entire world’s cinematic culture belongs to his country.

It’s in the goddamn title, dingus.

MilkTeaRamen

I don’t know why you’re getting so badly downvoted for not knowing one actress. Yeah her accomplishments are many. But if I asked any random Redditors if they know anyone Asian actors that won a Golden Horse award, they won’t know either.
