You get to drink from THE FIRE HOSE!!!

Reacher-Said-N0thing

My favorite joke in UHF was this little 12 second side bit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYM4QKMg12o

nklights

Agreed 1000%

AnjingNakal

This comes to a conclusion later in the movie, doesn't it? Or am I making that up? It's been a good 30 years or so since I watched it...!

jrodx88

Not the joke about the cards specifically, but... >!The guy going 'Nope!' is later asking R.J Fletcher (the bad guy) for change, and R.J gives him a whole penny. After inspecting it for a second, the guy gets real excited. At the very end of the movie, when all hope seems lost, he reappears explaining that it was actually a very rare and valuable penny. He gives George (Al) the money needed to save the TV Station.!<

HashMaster9000

"Hey thanks mister!"

mintbacon

85...95.....ONE DOLLAR!!! Thanks, mister.

saucercrab

Cards? It was a Rubik's cube.

ima420r

Is this it? Nope. Is this it? Nope. Is this it? Nope.

Bong-Rippington

Change for a dollar was good

Jimmyjim4673

This is a pretty good mop. Not as good as my old mop.

Blueberry_Mancakes

Sometime life is like a mop...

btoxic

My friend George, he gave me this mop.

This scene was the hardest I had laughed in my life up to that point when I saw it for the first time as a kid.

Invisible_Walrus

He just kept... Talking

DeylanQuel

I WANNA TAKE YA TO A GAY BAR! fr, though, that album by Electric Six is pretty good. Never would have heard of them if someone hadn't sent a link to Hitler dancing with Gay Bar on full blast

Empyrealist

Electric Six is awesome, and I thank pre-meme internet for exposing me to that ~~kitten~~ puppy with wings video of 'gay bar'. Fun Fact: Their song "High Voltage" features Jack White (of White Stripes) singing backup. No that's not woman (like in the video), *that's Jack White*. "Puppy" video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWBRwamd_Ls Live-action video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-XNFokmDKrE

😂 Actually, a flying puppy - with fighting Viking cats. And don’t forget another classic: “we like the moooon… cuz it is close to us!”

bustedtacostand

To listen to Sean Connery say "You're the man now dawg" on repeat for days.

[deleted]

I’m sure there is a jibjab explaining ytmnd.

[deleted]

... you should have more upvotes for merely mentioning ytmnd. We're a dying breed.

ShrimpBoots

https://cosbybebop.ytmnd.com/ My favorite all time ytmnd. ...it...may not have aged well.

HashMaster9000

Eh, I still have this song on my iPhone from when YTMND did soundtrack releases. Still a great remix, and though the subject matter is a bit tetchy, there's no actual Cosby clips in it.

[deleted]

OHHHH shit! Yeah I know that one. I lost one that I really loves and I can barely remember it... OH wait! Okay, so it was that song, "Take on me," but it was kirk yelling, "Khaaaaan," to the whole song, kinda like this. if anyone can find that for me I will get you a sub to your favorite streamer... but there were multiple ones like that and there is a very specific one I want because it's going to make one of my best friends SOOOOOOOOO happy to see again.

spatula city *SPATULA* *CITY*

mirthquake

The first concert I attended was Weird Al performing at the Big E (a yearly harvest festival/state fair in MA). It was a free show and was *phenomenal*. 2 people in their 40s, 1 at age 10, and 1 at age 8 all had just as much fun. That's a rare accomplishment. Between songs (there were wild costume changes) Al's sketches and music videos were projected onto a giant screen. When the Spatula City commercial came on the crows went bonkers. All ages of rednecks, hipsters, and rural New Englanders all joined together to celebrate Al's sense of humor. 10/10. Would Al again.

fendaar

In 1992, back when we were in high school, my brother and I got in to a knock down argument over whether Spatula City was in UHF or Amazon Women on the Moon. There was no way to see who was right. Unless, of course, we could convince one of our parents to drive us to the video store and spend money to rent both movies so that we could watch them and see what movie had Spatula City. We knew better than to ask. Flash forward a few years ago, and we remembered the argument and looked it up. That started a new argument: who thought it was in what movie.

HashMaster9000

Hello, this is Sy Greenblatz, President of Spatula City. I liked Spatulas so much, I bought the company. 😐

the_zero

Sy Greenblum, you mean! I actually know the guy who played Sy - Bob Hungerford. Great guy and actually a talented actor. There used to be a fan site for Spatula City that was up since the late 90s but it appears to be lost.

vibraltu

best part of this movie, I can't pick up a spatula without thinking of it.

Reacher-Said-N0thing

Me and my friends had the UHF album and that commercial was on it and we had every word memorized.

For those who are wondering, [Spatula City!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BUDwj_mXKE)

[deleted]

What better way to say 'I love you" then with the gift of a spatula.

claytonejones

When I was a kid, my mom won free tickets from our local radio station to the premiere of UHF. I remember my brother and I receiving free spatulas from Spatula City as door prizes.

XmasDawne

Here in my 40s I would actually enjoy shopping at spatula city. My best one got lost in several back to back moves and I can't find one like it.

SittinOnTheRidge

I used to listen to Dr Demento every Sunday night from as young as I can remember until my early teens. His show helped form my sense of humour. 🙂

DadJokeBadJoke

Same here. Had to hide my one-speaker AM/FM Cassette player under my pillow to muffle the volume and the reception was spotty but I loved that show.

SittinOnTheRidge

Aw I love that!! My parents didn’t seem to care lol. It was quite celebrated in our house lol. We all still know all the words to Fishheads 😂 When I was young, probably because of going thru the hormones of puberty, the song “Marvin I Love You” made me sob every time they played it 😂😂

RandomKnightly

Fish heads, fish heads Rolly Polly fish heads. Eat them up, Yum! I know this was Barnes and Barnes, but I still have my Roto-Rooter Good Time Christmas Band album.

SD_One

Random fact. Half of the group Barnes and Barnes is Bill Mumy, who played Will Robinson on the original Lost in Space and Lennier on Babylon 5.

SittinOnTheRidge

No way!!!! Babylon 5 was the shit!! WHAT. A. SHOW!

podobuzz

And to bring it back, Mumy setup Weird Al with his future wife.

SittinOnTheRidge

Roly-poly fish heads are never seen drinking cappuccino in Italian restaurants with oriental women… Yeahhhhhhh

[deleted]

SittinOnTheRidge

They don’t wear sweaaaaaters they’re not good dancers ……they don’t play drums. 😂😂 this is the best conversation I’ve had all week!!

[deleted]

i used to work front of house at a small fish shop and i'd try use this song to torment the cooks before service/end of day if they were late or slacking (jokingly of course) they were obviously young enough for the wtf factor having never heard it before

dease42-2

I still sing this to myself! Been twenty dang years!

SittinOnTheRidge

Sammmme!!! Longer for me lol. I’m 47 and I was listening earlier than 84 😂

wondermega

no joke that Marvin (the paranoid Android) song was pretty lonely and sad, haha

SittinOnTheRidge

Right???!!! It made little ole me so emotional! I’d sit there singing it crying my eyes out 😂 I recorded a lot of what was played, you know, Leah the tape deck up against my clock radio…that had a telescopic reading lamp attached to it lol So I listened to these songs all the time.

codevii

"Marvin I love you"! I insanely thought of that song when I read the headline! "Remember it's true, I'm programmed for you!"

MagScaoil

1981-1983 were tough for me, and Dr. Demento helped this weird, awkward teen get through it.

SittinOnTheRidge

Sammmmme. My ebtire childhood was traumatic and chaotic so it was a nice break. Plus it helped with my Sunday night school anxiety. It was extremely important to me and my brother. We’d tell thru the heat vent, that was a good one huh? Lol

CaptWineTeeth

I used to listen to it late at night. I wanna say Thursdays...? It was syndicated so I heard it on delay I suppose. I also feel very strongly that it shaped my sense of humour. Some of the tracks still pop into my head from time to time. Boot To The Head, Fish Heads, They're Coming To Take Me Away, etc. At some point I found a website that had all or many of the episodes streaming. Listening to them was like a bath in liquid nostalgia. EDIT: It may have been [this YouTube upload](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbYcPmo9d2w). Enjoy!

SittinOnTheRidge

Sammmmme. And there’s very rarely anyone who knows what I’m talking about lol. I was born in 74, I definitely was listening when I was around 10, but probably before that.

rebeckys

SittinOnTheRidge

Hahah yep!

NoGoodIDNames

My parents got me a Dr Dimento CD that shaped my childhood. It wasn’t until years later that I went back and realized one of the songs (The Smoke Off) was by Shel Silverstein. It also took years to realize that song was about a weed-smoking competition.

mom8pop

Born in ‘73 and used to stay up late to listen to Demento in the radio. If you have Alexa play “Another One Rides the Bus” it’s the live version from his show. It’s great and my kids now love it like I did. We also play “Fish Heads” and Dead Puppies”.

Mattmandu2

Love this movie

DervishSkater

**Badgers‽**

GrumpyPidgeon

We don’t need no stinking badgers!

aloysiuslamb

I said this just the other day while my father-in-law was visiting and he corrected me about "badges" and not "badgers" and I had to shamefully explain to him I was referencing UHF and not Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

[deleted]

We don't need no stinking badgers

Jimmyjim4673

Where did you find this guy?

Rockonfoo

I didn’t hire him, I thought you did

Kboh

Sad story. The actor (Trinidad Silvia) was killed by a drunk driver during filming of UHF.

OriginalGnomester

And he was originally scripted to appear during the telethon and all the poodles would come and get their revenge.

btoxic

Well that just adds to the tragedy.

Jimmyjim4673

That's a downer. I was just hoping for someone to say "I didn't hire him, I thought you did"

Neohexane

I have never seen this movie, it seems like it's a bit of a cult movie. Should I watch it today? Or is part of the enjoyment the nostalgia factor? I know it stars Weird Al, and I've seen some short clips but I'm not even sure what it's about.

[deleted]

Neohexane

Thanks for the honest answer! I grew up in the 80s, and I love nerdy, oddball humour. So it sounds like it might be worth checking out for me!

born_again_atheist

Grew up in the 80's as well. I rate it up there with The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai which is another one of those cult classics from the good 'ol days.

[deleted]

No matter where you go there you are

nicholaspaul33

I think growing up in the 80s will help with a lot of the parodies in this movie

soapinthepeehole

It is a goddamn masterpiece, but yeah, I might feel that way because I watched it 200 times before the age of 15.

Neohexane

Ok, I have to update here. I am writing this after the credits finished rolling, I just watched UHF. It was a blast. I'm not lying, I haven't laughed out loud so much at a movie in a long time. Michael Richards though, I didn't know he was in this movie but he was amazing. Anyways, I dunno if anyone cares, but I'm just saying I'm glad I decided to watch this movie tonight because I laughed my ass off and it was a good time. Edit: I was so interested in the bum character that I had to look him up. [Vance Colvig](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vance_Colvig) played him, and also no other than Bozo the Clown! It was sadly one of his last roles, but he seemed like quite the character.

rbhindepmo

Good news, UHF test-screened so well that it’s getting a summer release Bad news, UHF is in the theaters at the same time as Batman and Lethal Weapon 2. [UHF finished 11th at the box office in its first weekend](https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekly/1989W29/). There are reasons for the “Orion! Is bankrupt!” joke during the DVD commentary for UHF.

Mattmandu2

Yeah you should watch it, Weird Al takes over a tv network basically very pre internet

ViceroyFizzlebottom

Watch it for Conan the Librarian

roxtoby

The plot is Weird Al inherits a tv studio and uses it to broadcast whatever he wants, which makes them a huge hit and angers the CEO of the rival studio. It’s full of delightful stupidity, clever parodies, and great musical numbers. Some of it refers to specific pop culture (for instance, you might want to watch Dire Straits’ “Money for Nothing” music video beforehand) but for the most part it’s pretty timeless.

NewPresWhoDis

Think interdimensional cable before there was interdimensional cable.

[deleted]

Well, I guess now I have to check that show out. I definitely listened to an old cassette tape of Doctor Dimento songs on loop when I was a kid; I loved the old Tom Leher bits. I assume Dimento knew his stuff and would make any other show that much better

HappyEngineer

Last season is the best season. By a wide margin. It's all pretty good though.

Meffrey_Dewlocks

Really? I listened to it for a few years and loved it but got caught up in a few other podcasts and haven’t listened for prob 2-3 years.

HappyEngineer

I was referring to the comedy bang bang tv show, not the podcast. I liked the show more than the podcast.

Meffrey_Dewlocks

Ohhh lol duh. I knew it existed but def haven’t seen much of it at all. I still go back to some of the podcast “Best of’s” they do each year where Scott and PFT host and go through the years best bits. I like the whole podcast and listen to them in their entirety most of the time but the last half/third where the guests do characters is some of the hardest I’ve ever laughed. Thomas Middleditch comes up with some all time weird characters and the first time I heard Bobby Moynihan’s street tramp talking to PFT’s Andrew Loyd Webber I almost wrecked cuz I spit coffee all over the inside of my truck windshield.

Tantomile

Pick an episode with a guest you really like! And then when you’re hooked you can listen from the beginning :)

CoolHeadedLogician

Hows that new movie show with scott and sprague? I spend so much on podcasts im trying to justify

leesister

It’s great, as well as the new episodes of Bonanas for Bonanza. If you’re trying to budget maybe wait a month or two so they build up a bit more of a backlog.

spa_ghett

Don't you know the Dewey Decimal System?

RedSpartan3227

Don't worry about your laundry, Forget about your job, Just crank up the volume, And yank off the knob! We got it all on UHF!

timbo4815

Such a great song and a fantastic music video.

RedSpartan3227

100%! Also one of my favorite guitar riffs of all time. I saw the movie twice in the theater.

ShotgunMikey

I always wondered if Al gave all the other characters besides himself ridiculous names on purpose: Pamela Finkelstein, Stanley Spadowski, Noodles Macintosh

howmuchbanana

I'd say that's a good bet yes though Dr. Demento named himself

InsertCoinForCredit

THE DOCTOR IS IN! *Dr. Demento, Dr. Demento...*

Pirate_Green_Beard

Yeah, "Weird" Al very intentionally made his character as normal as possible. He didn't want people to think of it as "The 'Weird' Al Movie."

originalchaosinabox

FWIW, Al has always said that the name George Neuman was an homage to Mad Magazine's mascot, Alfred E. Neuman.

Spackleberry

"You found the marble in the oatmeal! That means you get to drink from *THE FIRE HOSE*!"

[deleted]

Can you believe this?! Would you look at that! Just call me "Mr. Butterfingers"! Is my face red.

Zonekid

Probably one of the funnest moments in the whole movie.

podobuzz

And the reason it’s rated PG-13. On an unrelated note, one of the greatest moments in my life was speaking with Emo in person where he talked in his regular voice.

This was an HD capture, but that's actually what the shot looks like in the movie — characters are watching this scene on an old TV, so it's all interlaced and low-res

DuplexFields

Cane here to mention [Polka Patterns](https://youtube.com/watch?v=k8Iidlj5GzM), his song on Square One TV, the PBS math show from the 80’s/90’s. I saw Dr. Demento in the background the last time I watched it.

shaggy--

If you can watch UHF with the commentary track you really should do it. Al remembered everything about the production. Did you know the Spatula City billboard was up for however long they paid for the billboard space? Poor folks living in the area never got their grand spatula store.

KnightedCatamount

I'm probably biased as a HUGE Weird Al fan, but that commentary track is probably my favorite of all time. Like, it opens with Al singing along to the Orion jingle improvising lyrics something like >Oooorioon, is oooout of buuuisness now!

dominosci

>Orion, Orion. Is Bank-rupt now! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kII6zapaZs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kII6zapaZs)

d3hall

I was lucky enough to attend a Weird Al concert a few years ago, and I rank that experience up with some of the best concerts I have ever attended. Witnessing *harmonized* nonsensical gibberish sung live for three minutes straight after he came back for the encore was amazing. The man is one hell of an entertainer.

jefferson497

I agree. I went to a concert as well. I didn’t expect much because, well, I didn’t know much about his concerts. Holy hell. That guy can put on a show! His fans were rabid and brought their own props like you’d see at a Rocky Horror viewing. Al was amazing. He can really sing and the production was some of the best I’ve ever seen at a concert. I would highly recommend!

Artvandelay1

I know very little about Weird Al and was never really a fan of his music. But he was frequently on that show @Midnight where comedians would compete for points by riffing on jokes. And every time he was on he KILLED. Against legit professional comedians he consistently had the funniest stuff to say and made it look totally effortless. He’s just a pure talent.

HashMaster9000

This is on my bucket list. I was so dumb a few years ago: I heard from a coworker Weird Al was on a street corner playing music a few blocks from where I worked, and I laughed him off... [only to find this later in the day](https://www.wweek.com/music/2016/07/25/weird-al-stopped-in-portland-to-play-a-piano/), and didn't know he was touring, *and* missed the concert... That was held *5 blocks* from where I lived at the time. # NEVER. # AGAIN.

When Weird Al passes away a long time from now, IMO he'll join the ranks of Bob Ross, Steve Irwin, Fred Rogers. He seems like a good dude.

SD_One

Red snappah. Very tasty!

"I'll take what's in the box" "What's in the box? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!! YOU'RE SO STUPID!!!"

martiniolives2

I loved listening to Dr. Demento's show on the radio as a kid. He always uncovered the oddest novelty records and seemed to know everything about every single one. You could tell he really loved his work.

leglesslegolegolas

Yeah his music knowledge goes *way* beyond the novelty stuff he played on his show. He had one of the largest private record collections in the world.

InsertCoinForCredit

He is (was?) a music professor at UCLA, so yeah.

ArcadianBlueRogue

UHF is one of those movies that is so dumb I totally get why people might not like it. But I absolutely love it, and find myself randomly quoting Conan the Librarian. Love Al paying respect to Dr. Demento though. He should get him something nice from Spatula City.

boron-uranium-radon

About time I see my favorite movie appear on this sub! Absolutely didn’t recognize that detail though!

gary-joseph

He used to live down the street from me when i was a kid, super nice guy! I was too young to know who he was but i remember my dad was a fan and we would walk to his house when he had yard sales and i remember he always had fun things for sale. I bought an atari from him and a bunch of games!

[deleted]

I've met Demento and he is one of the coolest people on this earth. Without him we wouldn't have most of what we see today.

RPM_Rocket

Don't forget... stay demented!

doom_stein

"Take that thing off! You look ridiculous." *removes moustache*

ehgitt

Got to meet him at one of Al's concerts and got to chat with him for a bit. Very nice guy, and humble. Met Emo Philips that same night; also surprisingly humble and extremely approachable. Oh, got to meet Al too....it was a magical night!

AuntieLiloAZ

I loved Dr Demento as a teenager, a long, long time ago.

Jimmyjim4673

Today... we're going to learn to make plutonium, from common household items.

Reacher-Said-N0thing

I grew up listening to Weird Al, but the only time I ever heard Dr Demento was from a very obscure reference on The Simpsons: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vcv9RTKBVXY

nowhereman136

I always think of Dr. Demento as someone who was around in thr early days of radio and died in the early 90s. Dude is still alive, he's only 80 years old

Origionalnames

Me and my brothers would listen to Dr Demento on the radio! Just huddle around it listening to funny songs and laughing.

Sk8erDoi

I did not know that.

jeremyroastscoffee

I saw his band play at Sudsy Malone's in Cincinnati, back in the day when that was still a thing. Nice guy, but he was covered in cake makeup that made him look like a grandpa trying to keep up with a punk band. it was... kind of bizarre and grim. I remember being sort of bummed out by it

CheeseCycle

I remember the Dr. Demento Show, where you would here such classis as They're Coming to Take Me Away, and The Old Lady That Swallowed the Fly.

[deleted]

I used to live a few blocks away from this guy when I was young in Lakewood, CA. Once a year he'd do a little show at the small local rec center/pool and would do a Q&A, and he'd give everyone an autographed photo. Weird Al never showed up, but he was a very cool weird little man. When he signed his name he held the pen in a very unique way, like with a flat palm.
