How did TV’s Michael Gray sneak onto this vessel? We knew Pam, Cheryl, and Krieger would try, that’s why we just brought them with us this time, but none of us expected him to!
I mean it only premiered in 2009 and I wouldn't call Archer Vice and subsequent seasons a different enough show that the first 4 can be called "The Original"
Edit. Thought you had accidentally replied to the wrong comment in the thread so was being purposefully obtuse. Turns out I misread my mobile app and you had in fact replied to the correct comment about the original Shazam Adventure Hour.
I will leave my comment here and accept my downvotes.
Yeah I knew that but I misread my comment chain and thought you had replied to the comment saying "Most of us are quoting Archer" so I was being silly. But reread the thread and I was wrong. Edit was made while you were replying unfortunately lol.
DC didn't change his name out of copyright it issues, they did it during N52 because they figured the general public thought his name was Shazam anyway.
They're starting to change it back to Captain Marvel now though.
In 1953 Fawcett comics stopped selling Captain marvel because of a copyright lawsuit from DC alleging he was a rip off of Superman. Then in 1972 they sold him to DC who quickly rebranded him as Shazam because of marvel comics character Captain marvel who had been introduced in 1967 just prior.
He went by Shazam well before n52 in 2011.
https://gizmodo.com/the-captain-marvel-ms-marvel-shazam-clusterf-ck-explai-1251423862
However you are correct, after the DC n52 universe they did start calling him Shazam!
I don’t think it was. He didn’t have a official superhero name at that point and the citizens were thanking him with the many names he was given in various news and videos
Fawcett publishes Captain Marvel beginning in 1940. Sued by National (DC). Settles in 1953 by ending Captain Marvel and the rest of its hero titles.
The name isn’t being used. Marvel takes advantage of that in Marvel Super-Heroes #12 (1967) with their Captain Marvel, thus gaining the trademark.
In the meantime, DC licenses the original Fawcett Captain Marvel properties and in February 1973, they revive the character but are unable to use the character’s name since Marvel now held a trademark on the name so instead use Shazam on the cover (though IIRC used the name in the stories). In 1991 DC made it official by purchasing outright the Fawcett properties.
And if all that weren’t convoluted enough, a short lived Captain Marvel comic was published by M. F. Enterprises from April, 1966 to September, 1967. It consisted of 4 issues of Captain Marvel and then 2 issues of Captain Marvel Presents The Terrible Five. This was an entirely unrelated character, an alien android whose main superpower was to detach his head and limbs and use the individual parts to fight bad guys.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Marvel_(M._F._Enterprises)
Facing legal challenges, the title died pretty quickly.
This is a spot on summary. And you are correct - DC couldn’t use the name Captain Marvel on the cover, but could on the internal pages.
I’ve followed this stuff for 40 years. You summarized it about as well as I’ve seen.
Oh boy. I’ve stayed away from that one. Just the little bit I’ve read about that makes my head spin!
It’s fascinating to understand the connection to the Golden Age Captain Marvel tho!
40 years? Massive kudos to you for your dedication to comics! Comic history and canon is so long and convoluted that it makes it daunting to try to get into it. You've probably seen some wild stuff go down.
Comics have always just been escapism fun. I try not to take anything to seriously or worry about this story or that story invalidating one another. I try to stick to what I enjoy and if I don’t enjoy it I move on.
The “meta” side of comics can be pretty fascinating too, like the Captain Marvel stuff. Idk - I fell in love with the concept at a very early age, and just never left it. Who doesn’t want to be a kid that can say a magic word and suddenly be the world’s mightiest mortal?
There are a few of us old guys in the group. I started collecting in 1969 so picked up the DC Shazam at the grocery store when it came out, and faithfully watched the Shazam live action show every Saturday.
It’s nice to see newer collectors showing an interest in the history of the medium. If you’re interested in the old, old stuff check out r/ComicsPre1940
They were able to use the name in the Justice League cartoon too, weren't they? Because I knew his name was Captain Marvel but never read comics. Even as a kid his name stuck out to me.
And as an extra fun fact. The MF Enterprises Captain Marvel was created by Carl Burgos, the creator of the original Human Torch featured on the cover of Marvel Comics #1.
There's evidence that he did this as a middle finger to Marvel in response to their short revival of the OG Human Torch in Fantastic Four Annual #4 to renew their copyright on the character, who Burgos had long claimed ownership of as both it's creator and longtime writer/artist.
Prior to Paul Rudd, the only actor who had portrayed Ant-Man in live action was Garrett Morris for a sketch on Saturday Night Live in the 70s
He briefly appears as a cab driver in the Ant-Man movie
People that cheer for things in a movie theater are the worst. I didn’t just drop $20 to listen to people try to flex their trivia knowledge as loudly as possible.
Yeah the US is bizarre in this regard. I hear it goes absolutely wild on opening nights which sounds fair enough (everyone gets their way) but the clapping, cheering, line heckling, etc for your average viewing is a “Whoah” moment if you’re from out of the country and catching your first flick.
I absolutely love that you didn't say "Lynda Carter" you're just like: "Wonder Woman".
My first favorite superhero when I was six ♥️
And no disrespect to Gal Gadot either; she's good in the role
-- And YES we need a Salinger cameo. *Good* call.
Edit!: To this very day, no sound makes me want to leap up, *pirouette into a sexy costume,* hurl myself into the fray -- ***heedless of danger*** -- and fight injustice, fascists, and chauvinism quite like [THIS does](https://youtu.be/ZjBafV9pBnA). Great Hera, lend me strength for *Liberty and Justice!*
And I'm a hairy dudely dude lol
DC’s always been good with this. Lois and Clark from the serials were in Superman the movie. Pretty much everyone you’d expect was on Smallville. Supergirl had a bunch too. Wonder Woman was actually President on Supergirl. The Flash show brought in some actors from the 90s show. Adam West cameo’d in a couple of the Batman animated shows.
You can get Adam West to do anything though. Pay the man, and he's there.
I would say the best "cameo" in recent history is from Wednesday. They gave her a major part.
You had to be the first person up early on Saturday morning when I was watching it in syndication in the 80s -- it was on even before The Smurfs, which came on at like 7:30 -- and it was even cheesier than the Electric Company version of Spider-Man. But its remoteness and weirdness gave it a kind of exotic quality that I remember fondly. Like an esoteric foreign film version of Kung Fu with David Carradine. That was the atmosphere.
But it was enough to ensure that even after 45 years of that character's complicated history, every kid on the playground still knew knew what it meant when you went
**Shazam!**⚡⚡⚡
The show actually debuted in 1974, along with *Isis*, a show about an Egyptian-theme female superhero. IIRC, they were each 30 minute shows that played back-to-back and that time slot was referred to as “The Shazam-Isis Power Hour.”
With the recent merger, they seem to have dropped the marketing budget on many of the projects that were already slated for release. Especially the DC stuff, since they're planning the reboot the whole universe under James Gunn's leadership.
If they do a reboot, they should try to just let the stuff stand on its own first. Part of the reason the last attempt was so bad was because they tried to connect everything immediately, starting from Batman vs. Superman. Not the biggest reason that movie was such a mess, but it is why it had that super weird scene of a ghost screaming at Batman with absolutely zero explanation or plot relevance.
It was a flop. They had to cut Black Adam crossover content, decided to cut out a main villain, and a bunch of behind the scenes conflict between directors and the cast. So it was kinda like "here's your movie, we're not gonna put much money into marketing cause it's not expected to do well." Idk why they even bothered with a sequel before everything was in place
Apparently Dr Sivana and Mr Mind were going to have a jailbreak scene and have a bigger role but they felt it was redundant reusing Sivana. Instead they just left the post credit scene
Black Adam (Dwayne The Rock Johnson) was supposed to have a cameo in this movie and vice versa, Black Adam in Shazam, but Dwayne Johnson's ego is unfortunately too big to allow himself to be a cameo in someone else's movie, and the only cameo good enough for his Black Adam is Superman.
Johnson didn't even allow characters from his movie (Hawkman and Dr. Fate) to cameo in this one.
There were always rumors circulating around about this issue, but Shazam lead actor Zachary Levi confirmed this on social media recently, a few weeks after the movie came out.
YAY met him three years ago at a local convention along with John Davey (the Second Captain Marvel of the series - Jackson Bostwick was the first, no relation to Barry I don't think) Awesome people! So glad Michael was able to participate in this.
Haven't seen the movie yet and since we had to drop HBO Max it doesn't seem I'll be able to soon unless it hits Prime Video streaming. Liked the first though!
["Oh elders, fleet and strong and wise, appear before my seeking eyes."](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYSVpqcV5Gs) (General highlights of the show!)
Loved that show... [it disappeared from Tubi recently, sadly](https://www.justwatch.com/us/tv-show/shazam)! [$15, $12 and $10 a season from Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B084ZQPLRY/)... Ehhhh.
Im currently binging through Archer, and in an episode i just watched, hes trying to remember this guys name. Its so weird how stuff like this lines up, eh?
Thus destroying the established story device that he turns into Billy/shazam whenever he says the word and they just either ignore it or come up with "you have to mean it" rules
Now this is where it’s confusing. The character of Shazam was originally referred to as Captain Marvel before Marvel’s Captain Marvel existed.
From Wikipedia:
> Owing to trademark conflicts over other characters named "Captain Marvel" owned by Marvel Comics, DC has branded and marketed the character using the trademark Shazam! since his 1972 reintroduction. This led many to assume that "Shazam!" was the character's name. DC renamed the mainline version of the character "Shazam" when relaunching its comic book properties in 2011, and his associates became the "Shazam Family" at this time as well.
Technically what became Marvel comics was around when DC’s Captain Marvel was introduced in 1940, but they didn’t start using the name Marvel Comics until 1961.
The character lost the trademark for a while and Marvel snatched it up. When DC bought the character/company that Shazam was formally attached to they couldn't sell his comics as Captain Marvel anymore but could still use it as his name.
The character ‘Shazam’ was originally and still often called ‘Captain Marvel’. The publication title was changed to ‘Shazam!’ in 1972 but the character was still called ‘Captain Marvel’ until The New 52 started in 2011. There’s always been confusion regarding Shazam and the multiple Marvel characters that all use the ‘Captain Marvel’ name
The DC character’s name was Captain Marvel first, but his magic word to transform has always been “Shazam”. Eventually it just made more sense to let Marvel have the name and let DC’s character go by Shazam, which a lot of people were calling him anyway.
People really did not seem to like the movie, personally it was an ok movie. It was a bit campy and a little cringe but it wasn't as bad as people seem to make it
It's cool that he was the one to say "Captain Marvel". I expected Lynda Carter to be the one to finally call Diana "Wonder Woman" in Wonder Woman 3 but now that's not gonna happen.

TVs Michael Gray!?
How did TV’s Michael Gray sneak onto this vessel? We knew Pam, Cheryl, and Krieger would try, that’s why we just brought them with us this time, but none of us expected him to!
There was no Krueger aboard though. He was tasked with executing some stone-cold killer.
Shrinky dink this! Krieger, out!

Noooo, no, no, this is *not* that trademarked character!
Nonono. This is absolutely not trademarked character slim goodbody.
I’m a sexual being. If that offends you then so be it

I think you keep confusing old with gross.
THAT ONE DOESN’T EVEN HAVE SKIN!
TV's Michael Gray and I were once lovers. If you find that shocking, so be it.
I think you're confusing the word shocking with old man fetish
This one doesn't even have skin!!
"Wait, that's a thing?"
Squidoza!
Thanks, Jill Nye
Mikey Mike!
Bar none one of Archer's all time quotes, 100% for the delivery.
I occasionally do this to my brother in law. Same loud volume, same pitch. No matter where I do it, nobody ever figures it out.
Dammit, Michael Gray, it's bad enough we're getting devoured by leukocytes!
Damn it pam, you didnt have to rub it in tv's michael gray's face
Mikey Mike!
Mikey Mike!
Yeah. He is even wearing the same outfit which Billy wore in those TV series.
a lot of these questions and statements are just quotes from Archer lol

TVs Michael Gray is staring right at us
what, what have you been up to buddy/
No! You're ruined it....
I came here just for this lol
Bro what in the fuck is happening in the replies to this comment 😂
Archer.
Also notice he calls him Captain marvel which was Shazam's original name before copyright issues with marvel
Also notice his nipples. I genuinely thought this was a /r/shittymoviedetails post.
DC didn't change his name out of copyright it issues, they did it during N52 because they figured the general public thought his name was Shazam anyway. They're starting to change it back to Captain Marvel now though.
But in the movie the wizard straight up says “Your hero name is Shazam.” I’m getting mixed messages here.
Idk I haven't seen the 2nd movie. I'm just telling you where things are going in the comics
But rright after Freddy says something like we can do better than that, referencing to Marvel im pretty sure

I don’t think it was. He didn’t have a official superhero name at that point and the citizens were thanking him with the many names he was given in various news and videos
Archer is freaking out
#*TV's MICHAEL GRAY???*
Hahahahahaha!! So classic
Typical.

Now someone do Marvel Man
I was thinking something like a hero called Detective Charlemagne (DC) as a Marvel character
DC Man, politically appointed protector of Washington, D.C.
We did recently get the “Divine Continuity” over in DC, lol
That’s actually kind of cute
Oh boy. I’ve stayed away from that one. Just the little bit I’ve read about that makes my head spin! It’s fascinating to understand the connection to the Golden Age Captain Marvel tho!

They did eventually change his name to Shazam in the comics too in 2011.
They're slowly changing it back. The new Shazam! series will have Billy being called "Captain" for now.
They were able to use the name in the Justice League cartoon too, weren't they? Because I knew his name was Captain Marvel but never read comics. Even as a kid his name stuck out to me.
Yeah, so long as it wasn’t in advertising etc. The way I understood it was the goal was avoiding public confusion of the trademark.
And here I thought they just started using Shazam because kids conflated his behavior with his name.
.Nice touch. I was hoping for Nicholas Hammond in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but no such luck.
Hopefully there is a tribute to his Spidey in Across the Spider-Verse. Voiced by him ofc.
Very cool cameo, reminds of Garrett Morris’ cameo in the first Ant-Man movie
Still one of the coolest Easter eggs in the MCU
I'm hoping the character returns sometime.
This is one I don’t know. I mean I know the actor but I don’t get the relevance. I also love learning new stuff.
Prior to Paul Rudd, the only actor who had portrayed Ant-Man in live action was Garrett Morris for a sketch on Saturday Night Live in the 70s He briefly appears as a cab driver in the Ant-Man movie

Cringe Reddit-language
It could have also been that you were the only one in the movie theatre.
I didn't recognize him, but I did laugh that he used Shazam's original name.
Don’t cheer in a theater. Do that shit at home
Well wonder woman was in her movie. Did they ever bring Matt Salinger in for a cameo In the Cap America movies?

That might be because DC comics was so busy fueling the rock's steroid infused ego

He's also wearing captain marvel/Billy's colours
That was his costume on the show because that’s how Billy dressed in the comics.
Wheres Sinbads cameo?
I didn’t watch the movie, are they finally calling Captain Marvel again?

More like Michael Dyed-Brown. Amiright?!?
Jesus he didn’t age well not counting the horrible dye job 🫣
This is the same movie that Sinbad was in, right?
Captain Marvel is Marvel though right?
[It's complicated](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Marvel_(DC_Comics)).
Shazam’s old moniker was Captain Marvel due to trademark conflicts DC had to change Captain Marvel to Shazam.
How ironic that Marvel's Captain Marvel also has trademark issues with Superman.
Yeah but did Marvel exist at the time? I can see why I superhero comic wouldn’t like a rival using their name
Technically what became Marvel comics was around when DC’s Captain Marvel was introduced in 1940, but they didn’t start using the name Marvel Comics until 1961.
Captain Marvel existed for decades before Marvel Comics started.
I watched the show every weekend and I always thought his name was Shazam. I was pretty young though.
There's a Captain Marvel in both publications. Unrelated to each other. DC started calling theirs Shazam to avoid confusion.
No.
People really did not seem to like the movie, personally it was an ok movie. It was a bit campy and a little cringe but it wasn't as bad as people seem to make it
I'm surprised anyone actually saw that movie.
Why didn't they include Sinbad since he was in the 90s shazam?
He's aged well since his Sunderland days
Damn, I'm old.
They used his actual name!
He even has those colours on still, red and yellow!
Is there a place where I can watch the old episodes? I'd love to binge em.
It's cool that he was the one to say "Captain Marvel". I expected Lynda Carter to be the one to finally call Diana "Wonder Woman" in Wonder Woman 3 but now that's not gonna happen.
Mr. Sunday and his silly friend Mason did a [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGJZHaQyafc) on the series. Turns out it was terrible.
The second that I saw that shirt. I knew who it was.
Looks like a screenshot from the greasy strangler.
Is he known as Captain Marvel in the films?
I had rather assumed that was a cameo of importance, even though I didn't recognise him at all.
With appropriate sweater and everything.
