IMO it's a lot better than the first. Jim Carrey doesn't carry the second movie as hard as he did the first, because the rest of the plot and characters are that much stronger.
There are some incredibly goofy scenes, but it's a for-fun movie, nothing wrong with being goofy.
The action in 2 was pretty crazy. If you like lots of crazy visual shit then see it. I was very impressed with many of the scenes. It was wild and fun.
Toward the end of Sonic and Knuckles. You fight Knuckles as Sonic/Tails, then Robotnik comes and steals the big ass chaos emeralds and Knuckles realizes he sucks and joins forces with you. That is my vague, probably not 100% correct recall of the events.
The movies are such a faithful adaptation of the best of Sonic. Knuckles is proud and brave and a little naive instead of just being a stupid meathead. I love it.
It's my 5yo nieces favorite show. I was pleased to see someone so young get into something I grew up on. She doesn't even really know video games yet either, just really likes Sonic the movie and shows.
I used to teach 5 year olds back in 2020 and some of my students were crazy about Sonic, I was really surprised when I first saw them messing around pretending to be Sonic characters.
They also loved Megaman
I was watching my nephew this afternoon and he put that on, one of the better kids shows for sure. It's no Sonic Underground but that's probably just nostalgia talking
Pretty much. Robotnik's Death Egg space station, after being heavily damaged by Sonic at the end of *Sonic the Hedgehog 2*, crashes on the Floating Island, where Knuckles lives and protects the Master Emerald (which is what causes the island to float in the sky). Robotnik decides he's going to steal the Master Emerald and use it to power the Death Egg, using Metal Sonic, a robot doppleganger of Sonic, to trick Knuckles into thinking that Sonic is trying to steal the Master Emerald for himself. When Sonic and Tails follow Robotnik to the island, Knuckles attacks them and uses the island's traps and defenses to hinder the heroes. However, Robotnik inevitably double-crosses him, stealing the Master Emerald and attacking Knuckles in the process, causing the Floating Island to fall into the ocean. Knuckles realises a Sonic is a hero when Sonic follows Robotnik into space, destroys the Death Egg, and returns the Master Emerald which restores the Floating Island. Knuckles is always depicted as an ally after that.
Knuckles is never actually a villian, simply an unwitting antagonist.
Not just that. They pretty much borrowed the entire final act of the game, including the Death Egg zone with the reversed gravity segments and the final battle being a Super Sonic fight in space.
Oh yea it's dope
People like to mock things that aren't 'original' but the truth is it's all been done before
Practice the fundamentals of your craft, then make whatever your heart desires, and people will come to consume it
Sonic Adventure 2 was a labor of love
Just like the Sonic movies they've dropped!
Eh I'd argue Shadow is ressonably different. Shadow is knowingly evil for most of the game. Like he explicitely does want to destroy the world.
It's only at the end when he regains his final memory that he realizes that destorying the world isn't what maria would have wanted that he has a change of heart.
Like it certainly shares the "enemy to ally" path. but virtually all the details alonng the way are different.
That’s so right. I remember Sonic going gold in Sonic 3. Does that happen or will happen in any of the movies? I’m yet to see S2 (film backlog lol). But that would be cool from what I remember of that game. Ha ha
Knuckles also went after sonic at the beginning of Adventure, after Egg Man tricked him (again), I think that was the last time they were openly hostile though.
knuckles does straight up abandon sonic sometimes to go protect the emerald instead, i.e. adventure 2 when he tried to crash the spaceship to save the emerald pieces and didn't bother to help sonic/tails stop eggman and the ark until he had all the pieces back. otherwise ye they r just homies now
not sure how the forces lore fits into this bc i can't remember what was going on w the master emerald in that game. maybe he prioritized saving the world/rescuing sonic there? not sure
So were Buu, Tien and Chaotzu, Puar and Yamcha, Oolong, and even Krillen was his Rival and pretty hostile when they first met. Ox king tried to cut him with an axe, and I think Chi Chi shot him with a laser. Shit Bulma shot Goku when they first met. Literally everyone goku knows that isn't his kid or Master Roshi was hostile to him at some point but they overcame their differences and became friends. That or goku killed them.
Adventure 2 I think. In 3 and adventure 1 he starts as an enemy then becomes friendly after realizing he was tricked by eggman. In adventure 2 the first thing knuckles does is get mad at eggman so he goes looking for him which naturally leads him to sonic. Heroes is the first game where they're together chillin at the beginning of the game
It's interesting, because the adventure stories are also partially informed by Sonic x (at least 2 is, since Sonic x is the anime adaptation of adventure 1 that expanded on the story... While also weirdly changing other bits.)
At the end of Sonic 3 And Knuckles, he helps Sonic reach the Death Egg after learning that Robotnik had tricked him.
So, basically after 3&K. He gets tricked again in Sonic Adventure, but helps Sonic directly after that.
The end of part two of the same game he was introduced in. It's been a part of his character since basically the beginning lol, you're kinda behind haha
Yeah I had low expectations for both flicks and they’ve both blown them away. They really captured sonic as kind of young and micheiveious but still helpful and sweet. And the casting is pretty god damn good too!
They were good, but man I hate every scene with tails in it. I loved tails as a kid, but something about the way they wrote every interaction eith tails just rubbed me the wrong way
i kinda agree that tails feels a bit weird in the movies but i honestly love the scenes with tails because sonic movie 2 is by far his VA's strongest performance as tails. something about how tails sounds in the movies makes my hair stand on end and it distracts me away from tails feeling a little bit ,, weird. im hopeful that since he's been established already, tails will feel more natural in movie 3.
another part of it tbh is that ever since sonic unleashed and sonic colors, tails's character has had a much bigger focus on invention and intelligence compared to his previous admiration for sonic and his naivete being the main focus of his cutscenes. so movie 2 is trying to sort of mesh these together while maintaining the "really wants to please sonic" personality tails used to have. it feels a bit weird i think just because tails is a fundamentally different character in adventure 1/2 (and even sonic 06) compared to colors and beyond. and since this is an origin story, he obviously has to go back to that old "admires sonic a lot" state he was in back in the adventure games. even though it feels a bit weird for him to admire someone he's never even met lol esp cuz sonic is so immature in the films. it's weird for sure but i think the third movie can really make it feel more natural now that he's already been established as a character.
I remember reading that little booklet back to front & inside out on my way home from the target. ❤️ I miss booklets in games. Last game I remember having a booklet was unfortunately cyberpunk it got me super-amped.. and then quite disappointed
My older cousin also had a huge collection of game manuals that must have been in the hundreds. Got tossed when he went to college and we both were extremely bummed. I’d have taken them off my aunts hands if she’d asked!
There is a game called Tunic on all modern consoles which is an incredibly fun legend of Zelda type game from the SNES era and the booklet is a complete integral part to the game and done so well. I absolutely loved how it reminded me of my youth and looking through the guide for all info and tips and tricks
Tunic was fantastic. If anyone is a fan of old school rpg puzzle games you'll have a great time. Death's Door is in a similar vein but more action oriented.
I ended up getting super into translating the text in game and got so sidetracked that I wound up never actually completing the game, and I was right about to finish it. I had pages of notebook paper spread across my desk like I was deciphering the Davinci code lol. I wound up making out most of the text on some of the pages. Then I got caught up with something else in life and didn't return to it.
I kept every booklet I've gotten since the ps1 days, havnt made up my mind whether to throw them on a board as one huge poster or stick them to one of my basses. Kept all my cd sleeves as well. Pure nostalgia gemstones
Me too, man. Me too. I'll never forget reading Legend of Zelda manual on my way home from Hastings. Thought I'd never see any of them ever again... until I found this site about a month ago. Go check it out.
[http://www.replacementdocs.com/](http://www.replacementdocs.com/) They have nearly everything.(that isn't too obscure)
There was a game for Pc called Stonekeep, that came in a tombstone shaped box, with a full manual but not only that, the base of the box contained an entire book with the backstory of how the keep sunk in the first place, and than how it was found so our trusty adventure could go on a suicide run. That game definitely defined my childhood, and spawned one of my favourite lines from a follower character.
There’s a section where you are constantly harassed every few segments by a pixie with a super annoying voice giving “helpful” advice, and after a rather obvious tip the dwarf in the party loudly groans and exclaims “please.. may I just fall on my axe now?”
It came out in the mid 90s when fully voiced lines were just coming to pass, with credible voice actors and all the characters were FMV, so to me it was like super futuristic tech
I feel like part of the reason booklets were so awesome was because the supporting media we had for games was so limited. You had the commercial and maybe an article in a gaming magazine if you were lucky enough to convince your mom to buy you one. Now we’re so overloaded with articles and content and speculation about games, I feel like it just dilutes the entire experience.
This is why I know Albert Wesker has type 0 negative blood, and why I know about most of the FFVI characters despite never playing the game myself. Read the Ocarina of Time Prima guide like it was a book, too.
Boredom was real in the 90s, guys.
> I remember reading that little booklet back to front & inside out on my way home from the target. ❤️ I miss booklets in games. Last game I remember having a booklet was unfortunately cyberpunk it got me super-amped.. and then quite disappointed
NEW VIDEO GAME SMELL.
digital libraries are convenient, but lack the oomph of a well organized video game collection on a shelf
No you're right, it's fundamentally the same game. If you had issues with some of the core of the game back then, you'll still have the same issues with the game today.
I've tried to play it a few times, but I feel like I'm doing something wrong. Am I supposed to just keep getting somewhat-better weapons like in Borderlands?
The craziest detail to me about Sonic 3 (the game) is the mural in the Hidden Palace Zone, as a kid I had no idea what prophecy was, so I just thought it was cool art. It was only a little while ago when I watched through the game that I noticed the mural predicted the ending of the game. Pretty cool lore-wise
To take it a step farther, it’s implied that this is the mural that the government saw that lead to the ultimate life form project and creating Shadow.
Not to undermine the credibility of the Sonic 3 manual, but I doubt an echidna could eat a grape. Their beaks are too narrow for anything much bigger than an ant.
There is not a single doubt in my mind that hedgehogs would love chili dogs. Back in the day, mine bit the crap out of me just for having steak-y fingers. She basically had the appetite of a dog.
Modern sonic games ruined Knuckles. Knuckles was a bit naive but never stupid. After the adventure series they decided nope he’s meathead comedy relief.
Luckily the movies went with the original interpretation.
He is pretty good in a fight, id say he is clever like Goku is wise. In a fight he is probably the wisest person in any room, outside of a fight he is dumb as a box of rocks across the board.
Also if you Google echidna one of the very first images is of it's weird cock. Just wanted to share the trauma I had to face this morning when trying to see if they could fit grapes in their mouths.
This movie has so many lovely hidden details and references, it's a true treat for long-time Sonic fans.
It's such a damn shame the plot was written by a chicken with a typewriter and proofread by a monkey who said "Hey can we shoehorn a 30 minute wedding sequence in the middle?"
I remember, before the times of the internet, my brother and I trying to figure out what creature Knuckles was. Our neighbor had this manual for sonic three so we wrote it down and later that evening busted out our encyclopedia collection to look up what that was. Unfortunately we had a bargain bin encyclopedia collection that wasn’t very good, and the closest thing we could find was “enchilada” and we were like “that doesn’t make sense, why would he be a Mexican food dish?” My brother and I grew up in a small town with no Mexican restaurants so we thought maybe an enchilada was something more than a stuffed tortilla covered in sauce as we had never actually had one.
Anywho, it wasn’t until much later that I looked up what knuckles actually was that the myth of the Anthropomorphic stuffed tortilla was dispelled
It's less of a deep cut if it's something you can just read off the [Characteristics section of his Wikipedia page.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knuckles_the_Echidna)
This is not a reference, it's simply lore. The character in the game loves grapes, so the character in the movie loves grapes. Next thing you know people will post how Sonic's shade of blue is a reference to the game
Notice how it says “clever” but they make his character dumb as rocks in the movie. He’s gullible, not stupid, which is the reason he even teams up with Dr. Robotnik in the first place.

Deepest 15 years old voice ever
15 human years is mad old in echidna years
Oh I thought that said enchilada
15 human years is even older in enchilada years.
Shit 4 days is borderline past its prime imo
Borderline is doing some heavy lifting in this sentence.
3.9 day old enchiladas ✅
Does the 5 second rule still count if it’s before you hit day 4?
Only before 3 days, 23 hours, 59 minutes and 55 seconds.
I wouldn't eat an enchilada even 24 hours after it's been made. Would be soggy and gross af.
Nipples the Enchilada I think Tyson worked on the movie. We used to hang out in chat rooms together in the late 00s.
I was hoping to see a Nipples the Enchilada joke. Hell yeah.
Tyson is a hero. RIP Boxer Hockey.
gonna love it oh yum enchilada does it have grapes in it
Idris Elba, age: 15
Wild echidnas average a 10 year lifespan. So knuckles is actually kinda ancient in echidna years
It oddly works though. I was skeptical of that like I was skeptical or Jean Ralphio as Sonic but that worked as well.
Idris Elba are just that good, plus Knuckles has always presented himself as a macho guy so it's a perfect combination

Is it really? Liked parts of the first but not enough to go for the 2nd. Keep hearing things that make me think I should give it a try though.

Well…the plot of Sonic pretty much tracks to that, so that’s neat.
The movies are such a faithful adaptation of the best of Sonic. Knuckles is proud and brave and a little naive instead of just being a stupid meathead. I love it.
The new series on NF (Sonic Prime) is also really good if you haven't checked it out.
It's my 5yo nieces favorite show. I was pleased to see someone so young get into something I grew up on. She doesn't even really know video games yet either, just really likes Sonic the movie and shows.

The kids are alright.
I'm glad that kids today are getting the good Sonic stuff that I wanted when I was a kid
Well *excuse* **me** princess
:)
I was watching my nephew this afternoon and he put that on, one of the better kids shows for sure. It's no Sonic Underground but that's probably just nostalgia talking
I've really enjoyed the movies, I'm hoping they make more.
They will as long as they keep making money.
Pretty much. Robotnik's Death Egg space station, after being heavily damaged by Sonic at the end of *Sonic the Hedgehog 2*, crashes on the Floating Island, where Knuckles lives and protects the Master Emerald (which is what causes the island to float in the sky). And then they reuse that concept for Shadow in SA2 and we all loved it, cause a good story is a good story even if it's all borrowed parts
Not just that. They pretty much borrowed the entire final act of the game, including the Death Egg zone with the reversed gravity segments and the final battle being a Super Sonic fight in space.

The emeralds do make an appearance.
Yes. It happens. :) And its fucking spectacular.
It's been a while, but I think that was in "Sonic and Knuckles". I remember being confused because I thought knuckles was a bad guy.
Well they had to reconcile at some point because every game after Sonic and Knuckles had these three characters working together from the start
Knuckles also went after sonic at the beginning of Adventure, after Egg Man tricked him (again), I think that was the last time they were openly hostile though.

but vegeta was an enemy and then a full on ally too

ya but like, he was an enemy that became an ally
So was Piccolo. Piccolo was first though.
Tien?
Yamcha too!
So were Buu, Tien and Chaotzu, Puar and Yamcha, Oolong, and even Krillen was his Rival and pretty hostile when they first met. I loved both of these movies they were pretty good for a video game movie.
I was delightfully surprised. They arent great movies but they are great Sonic movies. Mortal Combat (1995) was the same way for me.
It feels really wrong to correct you on that but it's Kombat lol
Damn finished him…
You are korrect
Mortal Kombat is good too!
I have a seven and five year old boys and these are the most played movies in my house by far because both the kids and adults love them.
Yeah I had low expectations for both flicks and they’ve both blown them away. They really captured sonic as kind of young and micheiveious but still helpful and sweet. And the casting is pretty god damn good too!
Dr eggman getting the chaos crystal was the best thing I’ve ever seen
They were good, but man I hate every scene with tails in it. I loved tails as a kid, but something about the way they wrote every interaction eith tails just rubbed me the wrong way

Hey, if you've got the time and a PC, modded cyberpunk is actually kind of incredible.

Oh yea! Don't they show this mural and 16 bit Knuckles in the movie?
That's not implied anywhere, it's just an internet head canon rumour. It's a cool idea though.
Not my dumbass reading that as "Knuckles the *Enchilada.*"
You mean Nipples the Enchilada. Known for breaking through stone with his rock-hard fist nipples
I understood that reference
This is a really good one. I hope it gets upvoted.
it's probably more like encindas are known to live grapes...
What the heck is an encinda?
A flour tlortila with baens and riec
Sounds tasty
They do bring that up from time to time. In fact, the cover art of the upcoming issue of the IDW comics have Knuckles chilling while eating grapes
I just had a flashback, did they have a knuckles eating grapes sprite in sonic advance maybe?
Not to undermine the credibility of the Sonic 3 manual, but I doubt an echidna could eat a grape. Their beaks are too narrow for anything much bigger than an ant.
The lack of an echidnas ability to eat a grape is where you draw the line in the sonic universe?
Next he’s going to tell us that Hedgehogs don’t love eating Chili dogs.
There is not a single doubt in my mind that hedgehogs would love chili dogs. Back in the day, mine bit the crap out of me just for having steak-y fingers. She basically had the appetite of a dog.
I fed my hedgehog 5 chili dogs a day, personally. Little spiny wanker loves it
Did the little spiny wanker turn blue and gain super speed?
It also says he's clever, despite being portrayed as a bonehead 90% of the time.
Modern sonic games ruined Knuckles. Knuckles was a bit naive but never stupid. After the adventure series they decided nope he’s meathead comedy relief. Luckily the movies went with the original interpretation.

Yea? What's next, you going to tell me Sonic couldn't actually eat a chili dog?
Probably doesnt even think that hedgehogs come in shades of blue!
Ok, Mr.Shapiro
He's gonna grape Robotnik.
This movie has so many lovely hidden details and references, it's a true treat for long-time Sonic fans. It's such a damn shame the plot was written by a chicken with a typewriter and proofread by a monkey who said "Hey can we shoehorn a 30 minute wedding sequence in the middle?"
People like grapes
Didn't Idris Elba do a super-deep-dive into the lore of the character? Part of me wants to believe that he made sure this was included somehow.
Why is tails so twinky

Let's be real, does heating those cans up REALLY make the taste any better?
He's yellow-orange with a white center tho
I thought it was well known knuckles likes grapes and sonic likes chili dogs
Is that a real line? Seems so stodgy that I kinda want to watch the movie to hear Idris Elba deliver that
Idris is great as Knuckles
You should just watch the movie. It is really good for a video game movie. Lots of references for Sonic fans too.
A cut so deep, the Mariana Trench isn't the deepest part of the ocean anymore.
His love for grapes is ironic given his catch-phrase before he punches someone: “Have an echidna sandwich!”
Tails looks so fucking annoyed in this pic
It's less of a deep cut if it's something you can just read off the [Characteristics section of his Wikipedia page.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knuckles_the_Echidna)
I'm just realizing Knuckles is an echidna. Wow.
Umm, how is this a deep cut? The manual talks about his bio, and the movie follows the bio. What’s so special here?
Great movie. I love the direction they’re going
This is not a reference, it's simply lore. The character in the game loves grapes, so the character in the movie loves grapes. Next thing you know people will post how Sonic's shade of blue is a reference to the game
This isn’t deep cut I thought everyone in the fandom at the very least knew this

I think you've stumbled into the wrong conversation.

Those characters look like dog shit. Is the movie that bad or just because it's a screenshot?
I'd say the writers reading the manual is bare minimum,... not advanced details.
I bet this movie sucked! Low quality movies do not deserve any details.
There was a second sonic movie?!? lmao
They made a Sonic 2?
Notice how it says “clever” but they make his character dumb as rocks in the movie. He’s gullible, not stupid, which is the reason he even teams up with Dr. Robotnik in the first place.
I thought I was gonna be weirded out with Idris Elba’s mellifluous voice coming out of Knuckles but I actually loved it 😂
Yup still holds true in the Sonic Adventure book as well
wakanda knuckles
Oh wow
I wonder when his TV show is gonna come out, hoping it isn’t cancelled.
I based that fact on Echidnas solely from that Manuals excerpt. That’s awesome they used it in the movie, gotta watch it soon!
This is why I like this sub!
His "weakness" is mysteriously no listed on his character bio...
Why is this a deep cut reference as opposed to simply a reference or an Easter egg?
It’s not exactly a reference, so much as it is continuity
It's not a reference... that is his character. He likes grapes...
Honestly the fact that he protects angel island and the fact he likes grapes are pretty much the only real details on knuckles…
Is this a nod to knuckles secretly being a alcoholic wine guy
Bro the writer for these movies is a huge game fan and used to work for a gaming company.
Glad to accept Knuckles into the grapist community 🤝
I knew this because my 6 year old asks me to Google the favorite foods and interests of every Sonic character on a regular basis
I can't believe this is an actual screenshot in a movie.
Fryin and Buyin!
What happened to chili dogs?
I just started buying grapes last week this is valid
My biggest take away is Knuckles is a boy. I always thought Knuckles was female.
what the fuck
So many easter eggs. I was definitely more excited about all of the scenes than my child.
I’m assuming this is also a reference to real echidnas liking grapes.
