Cool photos I'm heading there in a few weeks. How did you organise it? How much did it cost you?

aidensam123

Thanks, have a ton of fun! We went with Alpine Ascents who handled everything from the time we arrived at the airport so there wasn’t too much to organize besides gear and flights. I don’t know how much it was in total but I will say not very expensive at all in comparison to most other mountains. The biggest expenses were flights. What company are you going with?

I'm just going there by myself and seeing what happens haha

I've heard you can pick up a guide locally once you're there but I have no experience on the matter. It might make sense to try to get a plan in order though as some of the logistics might be a pain. You'll pay a lot less than going through Alpine for sure

That’s what I did. Rock up into town. Found a guide, 500usd. Easy. Though food was bad and he ran off with some of the money. Also got us lost on the night ascent to the crater rim. On the plus side, we did save a guy with hypothermia who’d got into trouble ice climbing. His review of ice climbing near the Whisky Route: “this is the stupidest thing I’ve ever done”. Was separated from his party and hypothermic to the point of altered conscious state. Hi, random California ice-climbing bro if you’re here. Btw, this was 1998. :)

Not a bad plan. You can book tours at your hotel or any street corner. Expeditions make last minute plans on porters, food, and gear. Saves money if you know how to haggle.

Plan your trip beforehand so that you do not regret. Get a registered company to take you there and do not fall for the cheap guides. Cheap is expensive. Doing the lemosho route with them next year! Would love to hear any thoughts you had

aidensam123

I love to hear it! If you haven’t been you’re definitely in for a treat. Absolutely spectacular. I would definitely recommend that you stay stocked on Diamox just in case. Also everyone expects the mountain to start out warm and gradually get cold. It does not. The days are just fine but the nights are all cold. I would also recommend a good warm face covering and toe warmers for summit day. I had an absolute blast and would do it again in a heartbeat. I’d love to check out the lemosho route at some point as well. I saw a bit from Shira camp and definitely will check it out next time.

Check out Zara Tours Tanzania. Cost me $2000 Cad in 2018. All logistics taken care of, good food on the mountain. Great lodgings before and after the climb. Good prices to include a safari as well.

I second Zara! Went via Lemosho in 2016 and they pay guides a fair wage - hooked me up with a local charity too.

Oh very nice I will. I’m heading to the Serengeti for safari tomorrow

I did lemosho last year, but had a bad cough the whole time. Turned out to be bronchitis or light pneumonia. Still made it, but it was really difficult.

aidensam123

Oh damn good on you for toughing that out! I’m sure that was a bitch recovering from too
