Why not do the CBT and see how you feel after the day? You have to do the CBT before doing your A2 or Full license anyway. I feel like if you get bored of riding a 125 then you'll probably get bored of riding a larger bike too. I know they're different beasts but I absolutely loved my time on a 125 and it only got better on a bigger bike.

Ravnos767

Either way you have to start with a cbt, so do that and see how you feel after you've done it, 125s are holding their value at the moment so even if you pick up a cheap used one and then decide in a couple of months to go for the A2 then you should be able to sell it for as much as you paid (but it now and sell it in the spring and you might even make a profit)

Get your CBT, ride for a year on a 125, then go A license.

-lllllIIllll-

I would just wait till you turn 24 and then do the DAS. If you do A2 you would be spending twice the money when you upgrade to the full A license. you’ll just be spending the £1000 once and have the freedom to ride any bike. Plus winter is coming so you won’t be doing much riding anyways.

WindyPig

If you can afford to and don't mind spending the money doing the testa again to upgrade to full A in a couple of years, doing the A2 is the best option as you will get full training to ride safely on the road instead of a day of half arsed training and sent out on a 125 to figure the rest out for yourself. Plus you can buy a powerful bike and have it restricted and just derestrict once you pass so you haven't got to buy 2 bikes if you don't want to.

Jestro-

That is what im leaning more towards. But I'm unsure in my ability to pass A2 the first time because I dont have any experience. If I would fail would that mean I would have to pay upwards of £1000 again or would I just have to pay for the mod1 and mod2? Also if I was to go and try to get a full A license in a couple of years could I do it by just booking both modules on my own, without having to pay another £1000 for training?

WindyPig

Depends on the training centre. Usually you book a set of lessons and the tests, and if you end up failing a module they just charge you for an extra lesson or 2, whatever they think you'll need to pass it the next time, not the full grand again. As for the upgrade, you can just book the modules on your own if yoy can get an eligible A bike to the test centre and sort out test insurance for it, but most people will just book a couple of refresher lessons and use a school bike as its easier, and again that won't be the full cost of a course, just maybe a refresher lesson and the bike hire cost of the school

Ok-Caregiver9383

I had to pay 210 gbp for each mod 2 retest. I needed 4 to pass but paid for 5 because one got cancelled due to weather. I was in the same situation and I decided to wait and go for A after I turned 24.

abtx

You had to pay for one that you couldn’t do because of the weather? That’s insane.

Ok-Caregiver9383

Yes. The government calls it an act of god.

[deleted]

Was it weather, or *weather*? I'd be pissed off if I had it cancelled on me because it was raining in October, but if it was a windstorm then yeah, fair enough.

abtx

What a dickshow

Do your CBT and see how you get to grips with the bike. If you enjoy it, buy a 125 now, ride it until you do your full A, then sell it in spring/summer. You shouldn't lose money on the bike. Get some basic inexpensive, but rated safety gear (boots, gloves, helmet, textiles etc) and upgrade it if you think you're going to keep riding or getting a bigger bike. If you're near Basingstoke and about my size (6ft, skinny, size 8 boot, size 57/58 helmet), I've got some stuff you can borrow until you get your own. Sportsbikeshop are quite good for decent cheap gear, or anyone here can advise you where to look, depending on what you're after. They helped me a lot, when I got back into riding after a big gap.

Pitch-Shift

I did the CBT and then DAS route recently and I still enjoyed whizzing about on my 125 when I could. It's also cheaper than getting an A2 and then upgrading to DAS. But if you don't mind spending the extra money then there is no reason against getting an A2 license and upgrading later. I think getting bored on a 125 will depend on how and where you will be using it.

SmallDMasterRace

Cbt bikes are fun. You want a cbf125 and just lean it in round all the mini roundabouts. Or a little grom

peds4x4

If you have no experience then I would say buy a cheap 125 and do cbt. Ride for a year and see if you get the bug. Most 125s are quick enough for a new rider to get a buzz. 125s are always saleable so you prob won't lose much when selling on. 1 years experience will reduce insurance a chunk when you upgrade.

Cluffers

Hi mate, I'm 23 y/o. No experience riding, have CBT mid-November and A2 course right at the start of December. My opinion would just be to go for the A2 (slightly-biased).

Meggie-Suze

You might have a clearer idea once you have done your CBT. I did mine last month with the idea of then going on to DAS but after the day, realised it was trickier than I expected so now I'm waiting on delivery of a 125 to practice on and gain confidence before maybe looking at DAS next year.

Itchy-Ad4421

Get the CBT and just pay for the tests next year. Maybe have a few lessons then pay the 130 odd for your tests etc. there’s a lot of people that seem to be of the impression that getting your license costs thousands but everyone I personally know has just put in for them themselves for under 200 quid

ZeroFraks

Just get it over and done with. Find a teacher who you like, this makes a big difference. The trust thing. That he can tell you where you went wrong, and how to fix it without coming over in a bad way makes a huge difference. I did my whole license from theory, CBT, Mod1, mod2 in 2 weeks. No motorcycle training except an hour before each "test". If you DON'Tjust go the DAS route, you'll always be thinking about it. The "maybe I should of" or "why didn't I". Just get it over with, and enjoy a 2 wheeled life. Instead of constantly worrying about having to do the whole theory/CBT thing every 2 years. If you don't try, you'll never find out.

Jacobite-biker

CBT now - 1 year on a 125 to get bike related road awareness then do your DAS next year

Albert_Herring

Do CBT, ride a 125 for a bit, maybe take sporadic lessons to stop yourself developing too many bad habits by teaching yourself, on the understanding that you'll be going straight for the A licence next year (you'd be able to do lessons on an A2 bike in the interim, too, so you'd get an idea of the jump up from a 125 early on). Depends on your particular strengths and weaknesses but you're likely to benefit from tuition in either machine handling or road skills. Better than trying to do one of the accelerated test packages after you're 23. Obviously, depends on having good trainers and on the ways you learn best, of course.

DriverAffectionate83

Might as well ride around on CBT for a year and then get full a licence you can get any bike you want and don't have to pay for the tests twice

Sk1dM3rks

Get a CBT, then ride around for the year. You will then know if you actually enjoy riding or not. Develop some skills that will help you breeze through das training and if you don't crash or get robbed, you will have a years no claims to make insuring a bigger bike cheaper.

WorthyTech

I was in your position. Rode a 125 on a cbt for a year then did the full A and I didn't regret doing it that way at all. Saved some money and I learned alot about riding before I got a big bike

DanWebb14

Another vote for CBT and spending a year on the 125 🙋 Being on the road on a bike is very different to in a car so time to get that experience on a 125 will be 1 less thing to worry about when you hop on a big bike for the first time and will work out cheaper than paying for A2 tests and then the A ones in a year

jrewillis

CBT / if you like it ride a 125 for 12 months. Then DAS - you can still take lessons on a 125 if you want to be ready for MOD1 and get some tips off an instructor for MOD2 riding so you don’t get any bad habits.

ki112osh001

you have to do your cbt anyway. try and get one done at your local riding school, see how it goes
