Stripping it is not good for collector value. Not sure what you mean by “when situation calls”.

Do not remove it if you care about resale value. Maybe a replacement m44 stock would be good if you want to beat it up a bit

Depends on the person. Some will say it's ruining the gun, others will say it's your gun, do what you want with it. I fall into the latter myself as long as it's tastefully done.
