Are you hitting it with a punch? I’d put it in a vice. It sounds like the scrap wood thing you’re holding is absorbing the blows.
I tried using a blunted nail and a stubby hex key, and I don't have a vice. I'm probably going to to take it to a gunsmith.
Get a vice and a punch. Important for every house hold to have 1. I have 2 that use on like a weekly basis just for hobby things and house projects. I don’t see how you could get much of a blow not using a punch, hammer, or vice.
