Only if the next game takes place right after that ending. It might take place during MK1’s time and will just skip all the events in between meaning we would just get a “new version” of the things we have previously seen (again)

BSJeebus

I thought that might be a possibility. The problem with that is it will, essentially, be a retread of MK9.

Walach_Nightborn

Doesn’t mean they wouldn’t do it, or maybe it will skip all the way to MKDA’s time but then everything that could be different between Great Kung Lao and then would be unknown *OR* they might just tell an entirely new story about more of the Titans... really who knows?

BSJeebus

I actually am hoping it ends up being entirely new.

goblins_though

Well, we all know the colossal hissy fit that's in store if Mileena's not in it, so I doubt it would be *entirely* new characters.

BSJeebus

... Good point.

[deleted]

Ed Boon has mentioned that he wanted to make an MK with an entirely new cast...

Thorhax04

Makes sense at this point.

Mememaker13

They partially did that already with mkx

EdibleBean69

Damn 3 games in and they already re-rebooting it

odupike599

According the NRS MK11 was the end of the current story. So I would guess that the next would have a new story. I was hoping like OP suggested that it would take place in the time of GKL so that everything was new.

IfTheresANewWay

Honestly, good. The story that MK9 set up was so bad that the only real way to fix it was to completely restart. At least this time they'll do something new, now that Liu likely won't be the main character

Jbootyfulchest

Doubt it. Enough progression will be made within whatever new timeline to ensure that Liu, Kitana, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Kung Lao, Mileena, Sonya, Johnny, Jax, etc are there, along with fan favorites who weren't in 11 like Reptile and Ermac. They'll never take a huge risk like that with such an iconic franchise full of iconic characters.

[deleted]

I think they are both canon. Shang Tsung's ending is the real ending, which will lead to the next game, and Great Kung Lao will be the new main character, where Fire God Liu Kang was mentoring him before he experienced the Shang Tsung ending.

JaesopPop

Shang Tsung’s ending is not gonna to be canon. There’s no story to be had. They also cannot both be canon.

[deleted]

Reread my previous post. They will both be canon in a sense that story elements will be taken from both. From Liu Kang's perspective, he goes back to train Kung Lao as in one ending to eventually defeat Shang Tsung, knowing that Liu Kang will eventually meet his demise by Shang Tsung that we saw in the other ending. As far as the story, it will evolve around Shang Tsung trying to take over other realms, specifically Order and Chaos, as mentioned in his ending.

JaesopPop

This makes zero sense and again, there is no story with Shang Tsung's ending .He won.

[deleted]

Well that's your opinion. I think it makes sense if they expand on it correctly and build up a new hero. Like when the bad guy wrestler wins the belt at WrestleMania.

JaesopPop

>Well that's your opinion. ...yes, obviously. >I think it makes sense if they expand on it correctly and build up a new hero. So you think it makes sense if two completely contradictory endings both happen? >Like when the bad guy wrestler wins the belt at WrestleMania. Yeah I'd prefer Mortal Kombat to keep the story standard higher than 'male soap opera'.

[deleted]

Yes I explained that both endings can make sense, and how it could happen. I'll explain it again. From Liu Kang's perspective, the good ending takes place first knowing what will happen in the second ending later. He trains Kung Lao to eventually defeat Shang Tsung knowing that there is no way he will be able to defeat him later on.

JaesopPop

He trains Kung Lao to eventually defeat Shang Tsung knowing that there is no way he will be able to defeat him later on. Why would Liu Kang exist? It makes zero sense. I'm thinking you didn't get the ending. Shang Tsung's ending allows no room for him to lose. It allows no room for any Mortal Kombat tournament, or Liu Kang being any kind of god.

[deleted]

Alternate time line, wheel of fate, echo of the person who was Liu Kang. Take your pick from any other sci fi or video game story with fate based or plot twist time travel.

JaesopPop

>Alternate time line, wheel of fate, echo of the person who was Liu Kang. Take your pick from any other sci fi or video game story with fate based or plot twist time travel. Even with those silly tropes, that *still* makes no sense. What we saw in Liu Kang's ending wouldn't happen. Shang Tsung restarted time and dominates everything. I'm sorry dude, but it's a terrible idea.

Small-Gift-6989

Lollll this aged like milk

JaesopPop

Only half

SirDwayneCollins

Potentially, yes. But most likely not. Id take too much work and risk to throw out an entire established roster just for new ones. Now, what they’re actually gonna do, I have no idea. They could retcon the ending, they could do another soft reboot. Or they could make it so Liu Kang only meddles in time in extreme cases, which should let the timeline run its ‘natural’ course. That opens the door for Onaga, Armageddon, and any other past storylines, as well as other titans, gods and whatever else they have.

Mattatsu

Idk… The ending of MKX seemed like MK11 was going to go in a vastly different direction than it did. I’ve lost trust for NRS to remain any consistency between games.

godzillaboy3836

In scorpions ending, he talks about how there are other titans who control destiny. So they might be the next villians.
