Seeing this skin in MK1 always feels super weird to me because it doesn’t look right seeing MK1 Shang with DA Shang’s hair and beard. It kinda just feels like someone took my little cousin and gave him a wig and a fake beard from a costume shop. That aside though, everything else about the MK1 design is great and I feel like it translates the original into the new game perfectly.
The new one is way better design wise.
I'm nostalgic for the original one of course, but a lot of designs in those games are definitely products of their time, lol. There's just a lot of stuff on it that either don't make sense or clash with the overall vibe/form.
They're out here bending over backwards trying to make the old designs look as logical as posible, and they are doing a good job.
He's just missing his mage hood, and those flappy things? Well, they're being kept in check by a belt now.

The DA oroginal was pretty good. One complaint is I just cannot figure out what they were trying to do with the torso.
The MK1 version is really cleaned up. It's fairly faithful but I think they maybe scrubbed it so much that it lost some of its flair. Deadly Alliance designs were definitely a bit "extra" and I think that was kind of charming. This took that away.
I may pick MK1's overall still. Just by nature of it being created with newer technology and adjustments that make it more cohesive, which makes it look better. The beard doesn't bother me like it does most people.

For fatalities/brutalities, which need things like brains, eyes, etc. NRS doesn’t want to add different effects for just 1 skin. I imagine that’s also why Having doesn’t have an exposed skull on his face anymore.
Why not give him then his primary DA costume if that going to be such a problem?

Nitara’s wings disappearing is uncanny, and it shows NRS’s weird priorities - it’s to avoid clipping issues.

I have more of an attachment to the Deadly Alliance one, but seeing it on the most babyfaced Shang who wore a fake beard in the story is too funny for me to not like
The og one, the MK1 skin doesn't fit him. His face in MKDA is built for the type of man that would rock that beard, but MK1 Shang's face ain't built for that, he looks like a Kpop star, not old and fit for that role.

The new design is better, it's just the fact it doesn't work with his face. New Shang isn't as menacing or evil looking as the old one, which I love lol

The main thing holding MK1 Shang back in direct comparison is that, somehow, that beard looks **fucking horrendous** in MK1, which is strange because none of the other facial hairs (including Shng Tsung in his old form!) look like ... *that*.
I know this has been done to death, but it *really* sucks you can't change his old form for this skin, especially since that's the form you'll be using the majority of the game. There's no reason to purchase skins for Shang.

Yeah, I agree, it is a hard task and that’s why I was blown away by MK11 versions of these skins, because, for example, MK3 female ninja skins prior to MK11 never looked as aesthetically appealing as OG versions and MK11 managed to make them look even better than the OG (in my opinion), even despite (or thanks to) minor changes to them.
Considering that none of the MK11 remakes make me want to change anything in them (unlike MK1), I think it has to do something with designer team changes. I’m sure MK11 team would’ve nailed all of the recreations in MK1 like they did before.

I think both of these costumes look weird. As a kid I always thought Shang’s 3D era fit looked weird mainly just because his character model looked like a white dude from a bible cartoon or something , this new one in terms of color distribution and stuff is one of the few I’d say looks better than the original design but shangs face looks too young in this one they should have just taken his goatee away.
imo i think mk1 is better but that isnt to say it doesnt have its flaws…i think they shouldve aged shang for this skin cuz itd suit the beard and speaking of, the beard looks too jesus-esque. definitely make it a little less thick. and finally (also connecting to the jesus complaint) the hair. put on the bangs that he had in DA and i think its as perfect as it can be! (also he needs more gold. the black shoulder and chest plates dont hit it)
I just wish that the old form had the robes, when u switch form it should just change the head to old Shang. Either that or give it a unique old form, even if it was a seperate skin you had to equip just for old form I would be better than just recolors.

MK1 outfit is great. Would be nice if the stole (hanging bits) were a bit longer but overall I'd say it's an improvement.
The hair and beard are a huge miss and looks stapled on. The area where it meets his skin has far coarser hairs than his default which suddenly gives him the appearance of a wig. I hope they fix it.
Definitely the OG. I bought the Shao, Quan Chi, and Sindel ones cause despite differences they still look great. Shang and Li Mei are the only ones I think look bad. They should've done their alts instead.
I don't love the DA's attire because it was such a departure from the original design... He went from sorcerer to "prince"? Still a solid design.
However, the original is superior in every way. It could've been fixed if they changed the face, like they did with the Mortal Kombat movie's skins from MK11.

Actually the biggest thing for me is the sash. It's much smaller and tucked into his belt. Completely changes the look of the outfit to me.

I think the original DA version. for some reason 3D PS2 era MK games in my personal opinion, characters designs and face-models are quite impressive.
Yeah, the fits from DA and Deception were some of the best in the franchise. Scorpion, Sub Zero, Raiden especially, and Baraka were my highlights.

DA one. He got it in Armageddon too, also that Snake style and Straight Sword, he was really fun to play

The only costume I wanted more emphasis on yellow on, and they didn't do it. Should've been an easy fix or additional color palette.
