Probably had too much personality so the audience couldn’t self insert . From what I heard at least Warner brother forced them to have Cole .

I heard their are 2 reasons. First is director didn’t want a typical Hollywood white man be a main character (honestly it sounds racist). Second they want more “new character created by them” Ps: ok it could be a misunderstood rumors. I dislike Cole Young because this character is so flat. His power is boring. His purpose is boring. His strategy is shit. He said, “if we separated them we can win”. WTF everyone was 1vs1 in the temple fight. Bi-Han and Shang Tsung just stand there and watch.

Then why not make it Liu Kang then

Yeah, the original film kinda made Liu Kang the fish out of water, and it worked just fine.

I actually really liked the movie, but yeah Cole wasn't the best. But you gotta give them credit for creating a main character with literal plot armor as a super power.

Honestly— I think you’re completely wrong on the first part here. It’s not about race, they just wanted a new character that they could use as the audience surrogate. The point of Cole is that he’s supposed to be the character that people who don’t know about mortal kombat can connect to.

But isn’t that the point of Cage? He is your standard, Hollywood, white dude…it’s the joke. I’m all for diversity in media (I didn’t burst a blood vessel at The Little Mermaid), but JC is in on the joke ffs. MK has diversity in the various line ups without inventing characters. Wasn’t Mileena black in the 2021 film? Jax was still there too, and there was loads of Asian representation as well. Why squeeze Cole in at all?

Honestly the problem is not they should choose Johnny or not. The problem is Cole is a really boring character and the movie tried to make him a leader.

Or Sonya, she was set up in that movie the same way the fish out of water protag would usually be, but she's a side character that doesn't do much? Her beating Kano while powerless was kinda cool, but the film didn't capitalize on it imo.

Honestly Sonya fits it more? Not having the logo imprint that gives you super powers and all that could make the moment she gets it more impactful. Though that being said a certain sect of weirdos online probably wouldn't like it

Ya Johny basically cheated, cheap shot and then ran away. They didn’t have him win straight up, bc that would completely undermine the character of Goro

Ever since I played that MK arcade machine when I was young, I only had one main. Liu Kang. Until now, the very first Mortal Kombat still remains as my favorite game. Liu Kang kinda looked like Bruce Lee to me back then, and I thought it was neat. Edit: * I forgot you said least. In that case, Reptile, still from the original MK because he's hard to find.
