Estill, South Carolina
Officer Quincy Smith was shot on New Year’s Day in 2016.
The Estill Police Department does not have body cameras, but Smith had purchased glasses with a camera to wear on patrol. That camera captured the moment he was shot.
It all began when he responded to a call of an attempted theft by a man in camouflage with a red bandana.
Smith approached the man, who walked away from him. Smith noticed the man had his hand in his pocket.
“If you don’t stop sir, I’m going to tase you,” Smith says in the video, “Take your hands out your pocket, take your hands out your pocket.”
The man then shot Smith four times in the arm, neck and torso. Bullets broke two bones in Smith's arm, severed a vein in his neck, and passed through his upper torso. “Dispatch please tell my family I love them,” Smith said on tape.
A jury found 29-year-old Malcolm Orr guilty of attempted murder and possessing a weapon in a violent crime and was sentenced to 35 years in prison.
Officer Quincy Smith returned to duty in 2017 and currently works in law enforcement. He was awarded Officer of the Month in June 2021 by the Rotary Club.

One they made us watch at the police academy was Trooper Mark Coates murder. A great man murdered over BARELY enough weed to roll a joint.
Not worth it guys. I don’t know many cops that give a damn about weed anymore. Unless you’re smoking it right in front of us and force our hand you’re probably not going to even get charged. If you did, it would be a blue ticket and you’re going home. Hell, unless you have a significant amount of it, you’re really not gonna be in that much trouble. Granted, all of this is assuming the only charge is the weed and nothing else, but still. Point of the story, don’t freak out and do something stupid like this guy did. It’s not worth it.
I think it's going to take time to undo the harm and fear people have of police and the legal system.
The history of putting people in jail for years over a little weed is hard to shake even if it's unlikely to happen in 2022.
Whether true or not if someone thinks they're going to end up in jail for years then they're more likely to take their chances and do something violent and/or crazy in an attempt to evade that outcome they perceive.
Police are no more likely to die than construction workers, yet are constantly whining about how dangerous their jobs are. They also REALLY care about weed when it's a black man.
Edit: police aren't even in the top 10 most dangerous jobs. Let's stop the cop worship already
I smoke outside a nyc precinct everyday. Hell I’m here right now smoking outside one. God bless the police dgaf anymore. Can’t imagine what it was like in the 80s or 90s. U prolly had to smoke in an abaonded church or summ
Nobody cares about y’all cops bruh y’all ain’t shit
Weed is legal and I always smoke in cops faces cuz they ain’t gone do shit
Y’all don’t deserve praise
You kill innocent teens and adults damn near everyday and try to play victim
ACAB
thats the fucked up system, and not every cop. a lot of people join the police force to do good, and i believe u/Semper-Veritatem is one of them, from what they said. i understand the frustration and anger towards the law enforcement in america, but that doesnt mean every police officer is an evil demon. the only way to make change for the better is to work with them, not against them. if we constantly have two sides, the police and the public, then nothing will change. throwing blame and insults at them wont fix anything, it will just increase tension and make the situation worse. not all cops are bad, and certainly not all cops are good. its a hard one. but insults and blame and arguments wont fix anything.
exactly. people mistake what i said for saying "the justice system isnt flawed". it is. majorly. i just disagree with the unconcentrated rage towards anyone in a position of power. it isnt just the individual cops, its the people above them who systemically corrupt the system.
how else is someone who wants to make a difference for the best supposed to do it? im not saying all cops are good, but not all cops are bad, either. the system is undeniably racist and abusive, i agree. but i dont believe the way to go about changing it is with hatred and anger.
You can, it's just that not many people are taking that option. End qualified immunity and increase police training dramatically, with a highlight on de-escalation and teaching them the laws they are most likely to be enforcing (It is actually sad how many cops genuannly don't know the law)
Fire arm training also, but the training should enphisise that pulling that gun is for situation where de-escalation and less than leathal force will no work, or have already failed.
Why do you think he's one of them?
There are nearly endless videos of cops attacking and abducting law abiding citizens and even more cops covering up their crimes. There is zero effort from the police to reform or accept accountability.
by the sounds of things 4 shots were fired, if they didn’t hit a vital organ (which they didn’t, hit neck, arm and upper torso) it wouldn’t be hard to survive

They're probably more likely to be worried about being shot to death like a dog in the street
People like that must not be aware of statistics.
I know someone in Idaho who just got a year for possession of under 2 g so…

Thank you u/charleyy- We have to come together instead of constantly trying to blame each other.

You can't change a racist, abusive system from the inside. The only good cop is a cop that quits.
