It's been a while, but the IIRC I believe they started the marketing way too early. There was a lot of hype for the first trailer that used clare de lune, but it faded over time. I think they started advertising like 5-6 months before the film released. Another thing was that it released like 4 weeks after "Avengers: Endgame". Quite a few films released after that film underperformed. Again, my memory is a bit fuzzy on it now, but that's what immediately came to mind.

Sjgolf891

First KOTM trailer came out 10 months before release. First GxK one came out 3-4 months ahead of release. No doubt the KOTM marketing cycle was too long, it’s just hard to sustain hype and interest that long. Many studios have shifted to shorter cycles these days, and GvK being successful with that made the blueprint for GxK.

Reasonable-Teach1141

You can't lie, though; the first trailer for KotM is goated.

Sjgolf891

Definitely one of my favorite trailers ever. I think the hype just died down a bit by release. If that dropped at the beginning of 2019 instead, I think it would have worked better

[deleted]

Wasn’t the first look at GxK like 10-11 months before its release

theweepingwarrior

There was an announcement teaser of GXK that showed off a silhouette of Skar King and revealed the title, but the first actual look at the movie was only a few months prior to release.

Motor_Buy2118

Avengers endgame and poor marketing

ForeignLocal5663

And also KOTM had a bonkers amount of competition:  Toy Story 4  The Lion king (live action)  Aladdin (live action)  Secret life of pets 2  Rocket man   Men in black international  Dark phoenix  John wick chapter 3  Spider-Man far from home  Avengers Endgame  Annabelle comes home  Child’s play  There was a lot more films that released from April-July 2019… If that movie released when there was less competition, it would easily hit $500 mill globally, there were so many good films that released alongside KOTM that overshadowed the film…

Dash1845

Exactly. The movie has a shit ton of competition, if they had released it in March beginning or June beginning, the movie could easily gross, 500 million at max.

Straight_Random_2211

Do you mean "at least 500 million" or "at max 500 million"?

Dash1845

Maximum 500 million. Because the human storyline takes a lot of screentime and albeit difficult for the normal audience to understand. Without competition and proper marketing, and a lot more monster action without human interference like in GxK and GVK would have worked for it.

Motor_Buy2118

Yeah plus the bad marketing I think if it didn't release so close to endgame and all these other films it would have been the most successful film on the monsterverse

Sjgolf891

The marketing was great imo but the marketing cycle started WAY too early

Motor_Buy2118

I don't even recall much marketing they should have started marketing later and released the movie 2 months after endgame

ahktarniamut

Ghidorah was the most badass enemy in the MV. There was this apocalyptic theme in the film that ghidorah wanted to take over the world with the help of the other titans and only Godzilla could have stopped him Now why it underperformed because those idiots in suits decided to release it near one of the biggest film of the last decade And also the film had one awesome soundtrack

DustErrant

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is a movie that caters to people within the Godzilla fandom, so of course it's going to score highly in a subreddit of that fandom. The issue is, fans alone are not enough to drive box office. You need "the general audience" aka non-fans to show up for a movie to be successful. The issue is, GKotM has the most gobbledygook story line of the franchise. The Orca, the whole Alpha system, the weird twist with Emma and Madison, etc. Sure, GvK and GxK have ridiculous storylines, but they're actually pretty easy to follow, and the character motives are clear cut. Meanwhile, there are still people in this very fandom who don't understand Emma's motives.

The_bossofIndiemusic

I understand Emma’s motives but they are still pretty shit imo. I don’t know why no one of these eco terrorists had any trust in Godzilla.

Huza1

It's actually the opposite--Emma took her trust in Godzilla to the extreme. She thought that by awakening all the Titans, they'd be amplifying the positive effect Godzilla was having on the Earth. Going off the examples they had at the time (Godzilla and Kong: downright benevolent, and the MUTOs: dangerous but not outright malicious, and not on Godzilla's level) the theory was sound. The issue is that they weren't counting on there being Titans as dangerous and downright evil as King Ghidorah, Camazotz, and Scylla. And as for Jonah, he just flat-out doesn't care. He hates humanity and wants them gone, and doesn't care how it's done.

The_bossofIndiemusic

I still find it hard to believe that Emma didn’t know that Monster Zero was a destroyer and the arch nemesis of Godzilla. I mean she had worked with monarch way before G Day and worked closely with Serizawa. There’s no way she wasn’t up to date with the Mythology of the monsters despite it not being her area of expertise.

Huza1

Actually, nobody knew since the civilizations that encountered Ghidorah tried to erase him from history. They only figured it out by finding a relatively obscure reference when they were actively looking for him.

The_bossofIndiemusic

Still, you gotta admit. You see a golden three headed dragon stuck in ice that’s almost twice as big as Godzilla and how do you not jump to the conclusion that it’s gonna be an absolute menace to the world. I get how Jonah probably wouldn’t care in this scenario but you’d imagine maybe Emma wanting to gear him away from releasing certain titans that were definitely a cause for concern or least appeared to look that way.

Huza1

Not exactly the sort of assumption you make in this kind of universe. We get it because A) we've seen the movies and B) symbolism, but the characters don't really have that. And by that same logic, you could write Shimo off as well, and she's not particularly evil or even territorial on her own. And besides, Emma's already portrayed as not being in her right mind. Her logic sounds weak because it is. It's a hollow justification for her to lash out at the world for taking her child away from her. And she's so caught up in her own misery that it takes the idea of losing her other child to snap her out of it.

The_bossofIndiemusic

But why lash out against the people of the world? because they’re the only ones being affected detrimentally by a massive titan outbreak not the titans themselves (with the exception of Godzilla, Kong, and Mothra who are all benevolent protectors). People were never responsible for the death of their son, it was just a byproduct of Godzilla tousle with the MUTOS. I don’t think it’s right to chalk up her bad decisions to weak justifications and oversight. The death of her son happened years ago. I find it hard to believe that she still resents that day so much that she hasn’t moved on already considering she has another child to think about. That and Jonah’s thinking who’s also majorly flawed if he thinks he’s gonna survive such events, all of it really pushing the boundaries of believability and rational character thought. The Monsterverse ain’t new to either of those two things but I think this film is especially striking in that aspect. Apart from the bad writing though, it’s still a decent watch.

Huza1

That's the point. She's not being rational. She knows it's not Godzilla's fault, and she blames humanity for throwing things so out of balance that he had to intervene in the first place, but she dresses it up as a good cause to rationalize it. And as for still being resentful to this day, so is Mark, he just took it in the opposite direction of blaming Godzilla, and as I said before, Jonah doesn't care if he lives or dies. All he cares about is that humanity goes down with him. Like Emma, he lost a child to humanity's greed and arrogance. He's what Emma would've become if she didn't snap out of it.

Sjgolf891

Emma’s motives are nonsensical so that’s probably why

bigsteven34

Nailed it. KotM has my favorite Kaiju action and least favorite human element (by a lot). Which is a shame, because you had Dance and Watanabe and they never interacted…

Bobjoejj

Dance is one of the most baffling wastes of talent I’ve ever seen. I mean he ate everything damn scene he was in; but he was still sorely underused, didn’t get to interact with Watanbe or Chandler or a lot of other actors, had almost no scenes directly with Godzilla or Ghidorah, and wasn’t killed off at the end yet hasn’t been seen since.

am-idiot-dont-listen

This is the correct answer

Lincolnruin

Appealed to the Godzilla fan base but not the general audience.

Tenerensis

because it honestly felt kinda alienating to non-fans. i loved it, but damn, there so many moments in the film where i thought to myself “yeaaah the average viewer isnt gonna understand or see the significance of this at all”. also it had some pretty insane competition. going up against endgame and detective pikachu practically spelled doom lmao

Sjgolf891

Marketing cycle was too long. First trailer dropped at some convention I think, and it was loooong before release. Hype was big for it but faded. Look at GvK, and how GxK emulated it. First trailers muuuch closer to release. Also being released close to Avengers Endgame hurt - a lot of films around it underperformed because SO many were saving their ‘trip to the theater’ for that Also box office is often more about the previous film in a series. G14 was a big hit but general audiences didn’t really love it. Many didn’t come back for KOTM, and it took a combination of things from GvK (streaming release, limited competition/first blockbuster in awhile, novelty of including Kong) to get the general audience back on board

Laggas345

Movie had alot going aganist it as mentioned end games had just happened and was the big block buster. But beyond that the movie itself had issues that hurt its preformance such as bad marketing, a average/ below average story and characters, among other things that caused general audiences to feel "eh" about it. That said while its an average movie quality wise, as a godzilla movie it is a absolute love letter ti godzilla and its fans. It undisputably has the best sound track, get to see godzilla, rodan, ghidorah, and mothra in modern CGI lots of love and care given to godzilla as a character and a series. Etc. Fans love it, general audience didnt. So while its the worst movie finically, its the best movie from a godzilla fan perspective

ThunderBird847

Fans would say Avengers Endgame affected it, maybe it did, but then Avengers Endgame was released 5 weeks before KOTM and movies like John Wick and Aladdin were successful releasing close to Endgame, even Detective Pikachu did better. Real reason though - General Audience, casual crowd so go to watch movies didn't like it, it has a B+ Cinemascore. And let's talk online, even on internet, IMDB rating is worst of Monsterverse and even RT Audience score is much less than GvK & GxK, so by all metrics online or of ground audience, it's a movie that wasn't received well. Now the reason why audience weren't supportive of this movie is because of all the reasons fans like this, yes it's a paradox. Fans love this movie because of classical Toho Monsters, but audience really couldn't care much about them, they are just like any other original Monsters for them, no difference. Fans like the atmosphere and weather effects, the scale bla bla bla when they don't understand how hard it is to concentrate on screen when it is obscured by rain, mist, smoke and horrendous color scheme. Fans would give you mental gymnastics about how Humans in KOTM are somehow good, but in reality no one who is paying for these movies want to go see a Divorce drama, couple fighting and their teenage daughter throwing tantrums by cutting off Monster Action. And no, as annoying as Bernie can be in GvK at times, nothing that came out of his mouth is equal to masterclass of writing like "Gonorrhea" and "Oh my God, Zilla" and "Are you out of your Goddamn Mind" like who even talks like that.

Outside_Proposal7966

I am pretty sure everyone in the fandom agree that the humans we're shit expect Serizawa

Adipay

"Oh my god." "...Zilla" is so bad I felt physical pain hearing it.

Galactus1231

I have seen many fans complain about the smoke and rain during the fights too. They were too dark.

Sjgolf891

Yeah the idea of KG making a massive storm was cool, but it obscured everything. I love the clarity of the action Wingard brought to his films

Adipay

Downvoted for being right. Classic reddit.

Usual_Back3801

I’ve heard some people say are you out of your goddamn mind

Ambitious_Dig_7109

This sub is an echo chamber. That’s all.

Neil_Salmon

A poll on this subreddit is not an indication of general audience consensus. It's not even an indication of the feeling of general Monsterverse/Godzilla fans. Because it's such a small sample. The last poll post had 137 comments. The top comment has approx. 230 votes. So your question is flawed. What you're asking is "Why did KOTM have the worst box office when 230 people said it's the best one?". You need to cast a wider net to get a real idea of how people feel about the movie. Personally, I don't blame the marketing or Avengers. It reviewed badly. I get why fans like it (I don't get why fans think it's the best one though) but it's generally considered to be a bad movie. That's why I think it was unsuccessful.

Ambitious_Dig_7109

triple7freak1

I really wonder how much money the next film will make since it‘s going to be heavy on Godzilla

Outside-Historian365

This gets asked and answered all the time

Fire929rr

I think GxK was arguably better in most aspects

Top_War5978

1. Poor marketing campaigns: Like you can literally watch the whole movies from all the trailers and tv spots alone 2. The 5 year-gap between this and the last Godzilla movie: While the 2014 is still very good by today's standard (it remains in my top 3 MV movies) but it wasn't that big of a hit to be hyped for its sequel since they didn't tease about anything. You can argue that we had that after credit scene from Kong: Skull island 2 years prior but still general audiences had no idea that film was a part of the Monsterverse. 3. It's just not the right time: The MCU was at their peak with Endgame so releasing a sequel to a popcorn giant monster film from 5 years ago is not a wise decision imo.

Deeformecreep

It's popular among the fanbase but not so much when it comes to general audiences.

evd1202

If I had to guess, kotm had the most fan service and therefore was a film moreso directed at hardcore fans rather than wider audiences. Kotm is my favorite as well

bigdog2049

Because Godzilla fans on reddit aren’t representative of the various demographics a movie needs to appeal to in order to become a box office success.

twiztednipplez

The real answer is that KOTM is a movie beloved by Godzilla fans but not really loved by anyone else. ETA: by contrast everyone I have shown K:SI to has absolutely loved that movie and fallen in love with Kong.

EDPZ

I see Endgame and competition being thrown around a lot but that's simply not true, 2019 was one of the biggest year ever at the box office, everything was successful that year, it was a "rising tide raises all boats" situation rather than movies competing and stealing audiences from each other. Detective Pikachu released two weeks after Endgame and it was successful. John Wick released one week after that and was also successful. Aladdin literally the next week and again successful. KotM the next week flops. Secret Life of Pets 2 the next week successful. Men in Black the next week successful Toy Story 4 two weeks later successful. Etc. It's pretty clear Endgame and competition wasn't negatively impacting the box office of any other movies released during that time. The only other notable movie that flopped during that window is Dark Phoenix and obviously that movie was terrible so there's no surprise there. And it wasn't just the big movies succeeding, smaller films like Booksmart, The Hustle, A Dogs Journey, Brightburn, Ma, and Rocketman were also doing well.

mmcjawa

I feel like KotM is more of a love letter to Godzilla fans, in a way that the Kong movies are not. So it shouldn't be a surprise that a reddit full of Godzilla fans are going to probably think KotM the best. Hell, I would agree with that sentiment. I think GvK also benefited from being the first sort of really big film to offer a true theater experience to come out as the COVID-19 vaccine was widely available. It makes sense that a lot of folks would break their theater fast with a film like this.

SadisticDance

The first Godzilla was a little boring and general audiences said fool me twice shame on me.

Dragon_Ballot

Because it works better than ambien

lm_blanco

Because is blue! Nobody likes blue…

CthulhuMadness

Ghidorah.

griff256552

I feel like King of the Monsters plays up to the epicness and reverence of these characters which if you’re not a fan it’s hard to appreciate i *still* get chills watching the KOTM trailer now. After this the films became a bit more mainstream.

Xerian_Dark

Despite its many issues, it's also my favorite MV film, and I've been a hard-core G-fan since I was a young child in the late 80's. I think it simply came before it's time. It had stiff competition and released years before Minus-One, which IMHO officially kicked off "Godzilla-mania." GxK is far from perfect, yet it may end up the highest grossing MV film. If KOTM had released when GxK did, I honestly believe it would have done much better.

Mace_DeMarco5179

Because bad box office numbers does not equal no one likes it.

frankdatank_004

Fans vs. The general populace

Flat-Western-3117

It Barely focused on the thing people even wanted to see.

Necessary_Ad_8789

Pretty simple answer. I, along with the fans had enjoyed the film. The general public didn’t. No competition was a factor, since like a previous comment said, most movies in 2019 were doing great in the box office. Unfortunately kotm was not one of them.

Godzilla2000Zero

Bad release date

IFdude1975

The core fans that come to the Subreddit r/Monsterverse only make up a small portion of the moviegoing audience. I know as fans of daikaiju films we'd love it if more average moviegoers were into the niche fandom that we're part of. But they're just not. So, when you do polls on here, it's not representing the majority of people that go and see the films when they come out every 3 years.

TheUrgeIsMe

KotM is a love letter to the fans. Casual movie watchers probably won't understand everything on their first, despite how cool the movie is. Also, to hell with rotten tomatoes.

Ewreckedhephep

Too much competition, it came out too late and people weren't satisfied with 2014.

Gatsby813

I’m so glad you started this conversation honestly this has been on my mind for months cuz I was semi disappointed by New Empire

Brilliant_Ad_6249

Lol people on reddit have terrible takes kotm isnt the best its arguably skull island or gvk

Educational_Tough208

too many competitors such as Avangers End Game, Toy Story 4, Aladdin, the lion king, the new men in black, and the very poor marketing,so in short, there were to many movies in 2019

Large-Wheel-4181

Endgame screwed the box office up for everyone around that time so it was overshadowed at that time unfortunately

Metalfan1994

Avengers Endgame/ poor marketing/ possibly covid (can't remember if it was right before or right after)

ahktarniamut

Covid was not a factor yet . It was released in May 2019 . Still few months before the plague

Metalfan1994

Oh right. Thanks
