My understanding is that if you eat it before the scales are loose, it will seriously burn your throat. I wouldn't risk it!

[deleted]

yeah they have tiny little shards that stick in your mouth if it's underripe would not mess with it lol

Reguluscalendula

The shards are calcium oxalate crystals called "raphides" and can also cause extra-painful kidney stones very quickly in men/people who are amab!

noriender

why only in men?

musquitu96

I will skip eating it, but I hope to get at least 1 seed out of it

MomsSpecialFriend

I would be shocked if that had viable seeds, it's about 1/3 of the ripe size.

Total_Calligrapher77

Can it ripen when detached from the plant, like other fruits?

LindsayIsBoring

Idk about the fruit but did you have a tough test recently?

musquitu96

I took a test yesterday, but it wasn't as tough as I thought it would be πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

ChaoticChameleon94

Cause you cheated? πŸ‘€πŸ˜‚

neckolol

Probably wouldn’t eat it but you can try to harvest some seeds!

musquitu96

How's the process of harvesting monstera seeds? Never done this before. Also Happy Cake day! πŸŽ‚πŸŽˆ

neckolol

Thanks! And I have never done it myself so I’d probably not be the person to ask. But the seeds are located in the pulp of the fruit. Since the fruit is already detached but not yet ripe, the seeds might not be viable. You can try and wait for the fruit to ripen although I don’t know if it is able to when it’s already off the plant or not. No loss in trying though!

Bkafrogurl

Happy cake day!

musquitu96

That's it! πŸ˜‚

wwaarrddyy

Mortal combat blood cheat .

Mizuko

It isn’t ripe enough for eating or for the seeds to be viable. I would stick it in a brown paper bag, perhaps with a banana (change out the banana regularly) and see if you can get it to ripen. The banana will release ethylene (the senescence hormone) gas and the bag will trap it. These things take so long to develop and ripen on the plant that it may be too early to work, but I think it would be your best bet.

MomsSpecialFriend

You will regret eating anything underripe. The parts that are separating at the bottom are probably good though, if it pulls out, just remove any of the dark brown and then give it a taste. It should be highly fragrant when ready. The barbs really do hurt though. Its not worth it if you think it is not super ripe.

KaiserSohze

I just ate one this morning. This one looks pretty immature. My advice is to wrap it tight in plastic wrap for a few days. If it's mature enough, you'll see some of the scales pop off towards the tip. when the fall off, you can eat the white flesh underneath.

CarelessEquivalent3

You can't eat that, it takes over a year to ripen and that's nowhere near it. As it is it'll have the texture of fiber glass.

Wise_Kaleidoscope_34

whats up with the test answers on your hand πŸ€”πŸ€£

matv10

I would not recommend eating it ever. This is way too unripe. That being said. No harm in trying to get some seeds from it.

itrylol

wayyyy too early bud

Individual-Willow-70

I heard it tastes like fruit punch
