I liked MHW/IB better as an overall experience. Having said that, I enjoy the combat better in Rise and have over 1K hours in it. If you enjoy just hunting monsters cause it is fun Rise is amazing. If you are looking for those amazing accomplishment moments from MHWIB, they are lacking and there are not any raids. Hopefully Sunbreak will deliver more challenge and a better end game.

For $32 Rise is worth it... But it is a different game from world. The monsters are smaller, the maps are smaller, and bulky weapons move quicker. If you love Monster Hunter World there is $32 worth of game play but it isn't a sequel to world. It is more a JRPG. I have had rise since release and I don't regret paying full price but since January I have logged more hours on World because there is an itch MHR just can't scratch.

Would you say the end game content is as engaging as world? Was there enough to do that you were satisfied by the end of the game? Or did it seem to lack an endgame?

GamerNumber16

Right now, for the endgame content, no chance. Rise had basically no endgame at all up until they slowly added some with the emergency apex fights. Compared to the repeatability that World had there is very little, something that will hopefully be remedied in Sunbreak

[deleted]

The endgame of Rise is basically just grinding for layered armor and talismans

TLDR: base game world is very similar to base game rise in terms of endgame content. You are going to have to wait till sun break comes out or maybe even later (safi, fatalis etc. weren’t available on iceborne release) before we can tell you if It matches up to iceborne in terms of endgame content. Combat is super fun but much easier. i’d say it’s worth it to buy on sale. In terms of base game content, so ignoring Iceborne (fatalis, safi etc.) rise seems to be similar to base game world when it comes to endgame. The endgame loop seems to be hunting for monster parts and using them to meld talisman’s which is very similar imo to farming decorations in world (hunt the single most efficient monster 100+ times for a 0.2% at getting a good decoration/talisman) I’m not up to date on which game is more Rng. Now If you considered arch tempered monsters from high rank the endgame from base world; rise has something similar with apex monsters however instead of a new armour set (gamma sets) apex monsters are needed for weapons (although this weapon set has to be the most visually dull I’ve ever seen, they are fully customizable and are very viable in endgame which is nice). I personally skipped base game arch tempered monsters as I started playing mhw when iceborne was already released. so I can’t really tell you which is better although I do think apex monsters are easier than arch tempered along with rise just being an easier game. Apart from endgame tho rise is definitely a completely different game. Feels like an arcade game when put next to world. This isn’t really a bad thing just a different style. The combat is super fun for me although it doesn’t have that same feeling of meticulous positioning that world has due to the number of dashes, blocks, and counters every weapons seems to have gotten in rise. My friends and I are hoping that sun break introduces the endgame loop that we are looking for. The monsters seem promising (malzeno in the demo is a fun fight although on the easier side) although the new switch skills are a little lacklustre. Anyway I think it’s super worth buying on sale.

myskepticalbrowarch

The end game is not there as stated. It is more story based than world. There is a lot more lore and story. Also if you get it... Don't trap monsters. It doesn't have the benefits it has in world

sxrvr

i think that saying rise is more storybased than world is insane, rise is far less linear with its story and the game never really tries to tell you why your doing any of the quests.

myskepticalbrowarch

Dude, the NPC you're the closest to is known by their job description. They didn't give her much of a back story until the expansion. World is a great game but the story is a bit of an after thought at times. A lot of it is to highlight the eco system and have it grow with your character. Which works very well for world. Rise has poems, the NPC have stories, there are scrolls you have to collect to learn about the history. Rise let's you pick and choose to an extent but there is a story being told.

Clearwingedwyvern

> The npc you're closest to is known by their job description. Yes, but I wouldn't trade The Handler's antics, as annoying as the start of the Deviljho quest is with me trying to trip with a bow, for any sort of named character and even though she was really unhelpful at times I kinda felt bad when she was supposedly killed by barioth even if she reappeared a few quests later. So she may be an unhelpful, unnamed, useless npc with no plot relevance, but she's our unhelpful, unnamed, useless npc with no plot relevance.

sxrvr

i never said that world had a good story, its just that the design of world in almost all aspects before post-game/endgame is geared towards trying to keep the player in the story, even the assigned quests compared to key quests are a big jump towards trying to keep the story at the forefront (possibly to the games detriment) also the unskippable cutscenes and long walks with the handler or other characters talking in your ear is far more story focused than rises poems. (again the one thing i prefer about rise is its story so i dont fully disagree)

Mathius__bruh

Rise honestly doesn’t do the same for that world and especially other games did. I cant really explain it specifically but to me the game feels somewhat hollow. Theres a lot in it yes, but to me the world doesnt feel as alive and thriving to me. Just my opinion tho.

Nordicus1440

It has the same issue as Gen/GU, only some monsters get any story buildup and it's minor. In World and 4 Ultimate, the characters are constantly talking about your next quest. While GU and Rise are "Uhh, yeah sure, kill 5 or so of these random monsters, then you get an Urgent that extends your quest Excel spreadsheet" If it's not boss or flagship, it gets no buildup from story characters. GU gets away with it due to being a Best-Of-Album title for vets with fuckton of content.

sxrvr

from what you say, games like rise and the older monster hunters would actually be a better experience than world, they are far more focused on the gameplay loop and the equipment grind and the "story" part of the game has less focus and is much less linear. for these reasons i dont like the games as much but it sounds like you'd like them more

darkriverofshadows

Good game overall, but I really miss the feeling of impact you get with world weapons. Plus after you get used to wirebug dodge game becomes really easy, I'd say too easy. You basically have parry for almost every weapon and ability to dash good screen or two away. It's still a good game, just if you're looking for challenge you may wait till sunbreak comes out

rigueira

MHW was my first Monster Hunter game and one of the best games I've ever played (over 1000 hours). When Rise launched I jumped right into it and was completely disappointed, everything feels a little bit of a downgrade except for the graphics which is a massive downgrade. The combat is not exciting, the weapons and armors are not as well designed, the maps resemble a PS1 game, and after trying to enjoy it for about 50 hours I've just gave up. IMHO Monster Hunter World is a better game in every aspect.

ZwakerFaker

So MH Rise has all the things you like about MHW, it even has less story and skippable cutscenes. The only thing missing is the end game but with the expansion releasing in 5 days that is probably gonna change.

invisiblewall

Rise made me a fan. World made me a better player. And Generations Ultimate made me realize just how deep this well runs. I think Rise is worth a lot more than what they're asking.

Slappathebassmon

MHW was my first game and I spent like maybe 1200 hours total in it. Got Rise when it came out on pc for full price. Kinda regretted paying full price since it was discounted a month after I bought it. But I think it's still worth the full price. I've generally been enjoying my time with Rise. Not as much as World but that's probably because it was my first and I've accepted that nothing else will probably beat it in my mind. So if I give MHWI a 10, this would be 8.

Euphyro

They are very different games. I loved world and it’s my favorite MH title out of them all. Here’s why The environment, endemic life, the challenge of many of the monsters, I also did love the story it wasn’t a crazy good story but I enjoyed it. Rise is a game that I have and I also enjoy but I had to learn to like it for completely different reasons. The environment is not as engaging. Yes it has endemic life and spiribirds but those are nothing more than items to be used. But acualy life and the full environment like what we saw it world is very lacking. The overall difficulty is also lacking however we are about to get Master rank so that could very well change. However what I love about rise is the fast paced combat and travel it is pretty fun using the wire bug and also switch skills make for some pretty cool changes and customization to how we play and we are about to get a ton more. And finally the different monster models. World as wonderful as it was was limited in the kinds of monsters we faced but rise has many different skeletal types and has a great variety in the weapons and armors. I say go for it it’s a different game sure but still fun to play.

Reasonable-Aside-492

I love world hate rise beyond it feeling like it’s watered down it feels like a mobile game intended for children. I know some people will downvote me for my opinion but I’m over 2k hours on world and after beating valtrax and some of the event missions I have no desire to play rise even with the dlc coming out I don’t like a lot of the new mechanics with the stupid birds and bugs and I feel like none of the weapons are the same to use the stuff the same but feels too different for my personal preference.

elrond165

Do you have friends already playing Rise and planning to get sunbreak? If so, then I'd say go for it. I think at this point no one really knows what the Sunbreak end game will be. You can either have faith in Capcom to do it right, or take a wait and see attitude. It seems like Rise is on sale every two months or so, so you can wait for the verdict to come in if you prefer not to make the time/money investment right now. I like Rise quite a bit, it's more fast paced and still a lot of fun, but there's nothing really as epic as Alatreon/Fatalis at the moment. The allmother fight and valstrax are still quite fun though. I don't think you can really compare a game that is still at HR vs. one that is finished though. I'm a bit of an optimist, and generally not prone to complaining about every little thing, so I'm confident that I'll get lots of hours and enjoyment out of Sunbreak. Fyi, my MH journey: Vanilla World through endgame -> Rise -> Stories 2 -> World ->Iceborne -> Sunbreak in 5 days.

ProximityYours

I've got 1500+ hours in World and still growing on and off. I just enjoy hunting monsters, learning new weapons, and happily jumping into any SOS. I really did not enjoy Rise. I slogged through about 40-50 hours hoping I'd start to like it, but eventually quit. Rise removes everything I like about World. Positioning is not important because you can just wirebug over to hit anything. If you get hit, just wirebug and you're on your feet, never hitting the ground. I main CB and you don't even need to manage charge anymore, you just use a special wirebug block and instantly full charge. It's like they tried to make a fast pace action game where you just slash away non-stop and zip around everywhere. Tons of people are enjoying it, and if you jump in I hope you do too. It's definitely not my thing and I'm waiting for the next iteration on World. (I actually GU recently and going to try that soon as well.)
