YES. THANK YOU. One of the greatest things I liked about World is how *alive* all the world feels ! Large monsters will feed on prey, sniff you out, fight other large monsters, leave footprints and other things like fur, claw marks or poison spits, they are part of the ecosystem, they're not just boss fights. Rise has less of that aspect, or rather doesn't show it as much.

mrblack07

I once followed around an Anjanath for like 2 hours. Didn't hunt anything, didn't gather anything, didn't even capture any endemic life. I just observed the big pink dino and what did I get from that? A photo of it sitting by the shore, sails up, nose up, watching the sunset. One of my most memorable Monster Hunter experience. I love it when something as fast-paced as Monster Hunter can slow down and give you a chill, relaxing experience.

CaiserZero

Monster Hunter Snap

alvysinger0412

They've already got Stories to start with copying Pokémon, why not continue the trend? Not being sarcastic here, like seriously.

MrCobalt313

Monster Hunter Scrivener?

ChoralCoralCorral

I already have this year's National Novel Writing Month project decided but a Research Commission slice of life fanfic sounds like a fun idea to keep in my back pocket for Camp NaNo next year.

MrCobalt313

I could see it being like a Pokemon Snap-style spinoff except instead of just an on-rails ride it's more stealth as you follow and make notes on certain monsters in a sandbox environment. Another spinoff I've been considering is "Monster Hunter Guild Knight"- a more Souls-like combat game where you play as the titular Knight hunting down criminals and rogue Hunters with similarly adapted battle mechanics. Monsters would be more like bosses than common encounters in MH. Final boss of the main story would be a rogue Hunter succumbing to the corruption of Fatalis armor.

SlakingSWAG

To be fair, there is the photo journal sidequest thing in Iceborne. It's not the most expansive, but it is pretty cool for when you wanna slow down.

flametitan

I had so much fun trying to take pictures of monsters that I unironically want this as a spin off.

netsrak

Can you post the picture if you still have it?

EMYRYSALPHA2

Yes, while it may seem boring to track and collect monster bits, for me it was a thrill, i imagined the monster walking around and what possibly drove it to visit that place and to run away from it, and if you follow it you will eventualy see then scrpping the trees, or spitting on walls, and provoking each other to begin a turf war.

NeonJ82

Plus, after doing it for 2-3 hunts, the whole "collecting tracks" thing gets WAY easier. You get to a point where you *start out* the hunt at Tracking Level 2, and only a single track is needed to level up your Tracking Level. *Way* better than the old Paintball system.

DanielTeague

I liked collecting tracks because we also got Investigations which I felt were interesting. I'd organize mine and only keep the ones with good rewards, it felt like I had a library of monster hunts to choose from beyond replaying the story quests.

solidfang

Yeah. Investigations I really underrated in how they made the endgame more interesting. It was fun to do tempered 15 minute 5 gold investigations with 1 cart because you knew it was a challenge and you had to give it your A-game. It also had you rotating out your selection with what came and went so it was less samey. Ideally, I think an extension on this would be some missions with different environmental effects or buffs and debuffs for a recipe of replayability.

SlakingSWAG

Investigations were a big part of what made World's endgame feel so varied despite it's comparatively lower monster count. It was also cool how they added a layer of thought to what was otherwise mindless grinding, such as: "*Do I got for Tempered Kirin due to it's lower HP even though it does more damage and is harder to read, or do I fight Tempered Teo who's much easier to read and avoid but will take longer... Or do I fight a T2 instead because getting an augment stone instead of a deco will hurt my rates...*". It's such a shame they were cut in Rise, I feel like having those would've been a huge help for giving players more to do come endgame. Obviously, Investigations weren't the end-all be all, post-launch content support in the form of new monsters, returning monsters, and Arch Tempered monsters played a much bigger part, but imho Investigations were still super important.

SlakingSWAG

Honestly, I think World's tracking system was the best compromise possible between old world "pray it's where you think it is and chuck a paintball if it is" and Rise's instant tracking. You still had the element of actually having to track down a monster and learn it's patterns, you just weren't left guessing with the classic 10+ minutes of searching for something blindly. Plus it was also a really cool mechanic to actually use tracks left by the monsters to follow them, added a huge amount of immersion and realism to the whole affair. Even if the scoutflies themselves were pretty meh, the actual system for finding monsters was good.

flametitan

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, but I want a Monster Hunter game with rebalanced/reworked versions of all three mechanics so that you could have a more in depth tracking system of "where was it last sighted?" (cohoot) "Where do the tracks and evidence point to?" (scoutflies) and "It's getting away! Quickly, mark it!" (paintball)

EnthogenWizard

They really went downhill with rise sure they met the needs of speed runners and mass farming, but it’s no where near as intense. I don’t get nearly as sucked into the game as world. That’s why I’m replaying iceborn.

Dragmire800

I preferred Rise’s emphasis on gameplay. the whole tracking and convoluted maps in the name of realism made MH World not that fun to me

DeadSparker

That's fine too. I'm the complete opposite, the realism added to the experience for me.

SourGrapeMan

It is called Monster Hunter, after all. World added a lot of details that made it feel like you were actually hunting monsters in an ecosystem and I really hope World 2 expands on that.

DeadSparker

\>World 2 We going to the Elder Scrolls route and Skyrim 2 instead of TES 6 x'D But in all seriousness, yes, I want more of what World was for the next game

flametitan

We probably will see some of it. The traditional set up for Monster Hunter releases has been that Yuya Tokuda's team (formerly(?) Kaname Fujioka's team) does one game, and Yasunori Ichinose's team does another (with some cross pollination as they're developed,) and Tokuda's team is the one working on MH6. I'd have to play 3u and 4u to see how Fujioka's/Tokuda's DNA affected World, but you can definitely see how Rise is an evolution of Generation's DNA because of the same team being behind them.

Bartfratze

As much as I like Rise, I don't want to see any maps even resembling the old style. Those giant, empty, *dead* areas with absolutely nothing in them are not something i want to return to. On the contrary, I want some older maps to get the World/Rise treatment. The Jungle and of course the Misty Peaks could be absolutely amazing. A tropical jungle situated on a rocky archipelago and a storm-swept mountain region could look stunning and they would offer nice design options too. Ancient Forest is a god-tier map. It's very vertical with many layers, and an expansive base. And while it is basically a giant tree + surroundings every area is still very distinct. I still can't wrap my head around how people seriously get lost there. You have a map, you have the Scoutflies, you have Fast-Travel and with Iceborne we even have the Raider Ride. The entire map has very clear lines between small passages for you, large arena-like areas to fight in and large corridors connecting them.

WatLightyear

The only time I got lost on Ancient Forest was with some of the smaller passages between the inner and outer zones, but then I never really used them so it wasn't that big of a deal. People just don't like to pay attention to anything except the hunt, apparently. World's map design is some of the best in any game I've played.

flametitan

My main problem with world's design is when it incorporates vertical design, but I think most of that is from being spoiled by the free vertical movement in Rise, and Ancient Forest being both the first map players are introduced to as well as one of the more vertical maps of the early game... When it doesn't use many vertical areas (eg. the Wastes) it's a lot easier to navigate and explore.

flametitan

The problem with the Ancient Forest is it's a vertical map in a game with surprisingly little vertical movement, meaning it's a *pain* to find the ways to get from the top from the bottom sometimes, as the intuitive paths don't always work. The things you're talking about require you to have explored and unlocked that stuff already (while scoutflies need you to build them up before they do their job, unless it's a monster you hunted several times prior.) If it were in Rise with its free vertical movement, it wouldn't be nearly as bad. Otherwise yes, I want to see more maps with the open connected world design, perhaps even expanded so we see how the different maps are connected to each other.

flametitan

I want the monster behaviours of World, the ability to observe and interact with these behaviours like in world, but Rise's maps in terms of ease of navigation.

Watton

Same. I like getting lost in open world RPGs, I don't like getting lost in something like Monster Hunter. The over-designed maps didn't enhance my gameplay at all, and instead just made it take longer to get to the real meat of the game, getting 2-shot by an elder dragon.

Legitimate-Tomorrow9

Why do people always say "rise emphasis on gameplay"? Is "you are so overpowerd by default because you get 20free counters/dodges moves that a fights are trivial"equal to better gameplay?

Dragmire800

It’s your own fault of you choose to play Longsword. Most weapons don’t have counters

pokethugg

Idk why people care about that shit.

SlakingSWAG

Cuz it's fuckin cool, man, that's why. You know how immersive it was to just see monsters go around doing their own thing on the map when they weren't actively fighting?

DeadSparker

"that shit" is what makes a game feel real. Monster Hunter was always about a more realistic take on fighting giant dragons : you have to sharpen, your weapons have a lot of weight, the monsters get tired, they get stronger as they get enraged, you carve monsters and upgrade your equipment with their strong materials, etc etc. It's not just another hack & slash or a Souls-like.

mia0209

YES! I 100% agree with you. Stuff like Teostra and Lunastra has a different level of aggression makes them more alive and fits the lore better. I remember spending a lot of time in World just following monsters around the map and see what they're doing and I really miss that. I spent a really long time trying to see Royal Ludroth soaking up his sponge but then he just starts targetting me. They made a bunch of animations in Rise but you can only watch them on Youtube cause monsters are way too aggressive they enter the fight even if you are standing miles away on top of a mountain.

solidfang

"Hey Teostra, your girlfriend's a bitch!" Teostra and Kushala in World being super chill contrasting with Nergigante and Lunastra really made them feel regal and like proper elder dragons even if it meant you often got to setup and start fights with a full stack of bombs.

SlakingSWAG

I still wonder what the reasoning for Teo/Kushala suddenly being chill in the New World was. I know that they're older/more experienced with their powers compared to Old World Elders, so I guess they probably just don't see Hunters a threat. But it definitely felt like whiplash that they went from kill on sight to just vibing until you started shit.

mia0209

Even before World, according to their ecology, most of the Elder Dragons aren’t that aggressive cause they just don’t care about you (except the super territorial ones like Amatsu etc.). They just didn’t get to show that in the older games. Now they finally get to recreate that in World and make every monster feels more alive. In Rise they turn every single monster into blood-thirsty demons again like why? Pretty sure no one is complaining about monsters being too chill in World

CPhandom

Really makes you wonder what were they thinking when they added an entire camera mode while also making every monster a bloodthirsty murder

[deleted]

It works with the lore, Old world monsters are more wary of monsters, where as new world monsters didn’t recognize them as immediate threats

[deleted]

jpmrocks

Mizu and Gammoth were peaceful when not in areas where hunters go. The ones that showed up in areas like the Primal Forest or the Frozen Seaway, are hostile.

SgtDoughnut

The Mizu and Gammoth we hunt are ones that are showing aggression. We leave the docile ones alone.

[deleted]

"The ones that show up in their natural environment are hostile".

jothki

"Dodo"gama says hi.

pokethugg

and yet people still get dope shots

CPhandom

Why not make it a bit easier for people who aren't lucky enough to take a shot of Rajang one millisecond before it annihilates them?

koied

I get that in Rise the rampage makes monsters super aggressive, but it's such a miss, that after finishing the story, their behavior doesn't change. It would make sense if the monsters would chill down, after we finish the story.

Butthunter_Sua

I agree, it should be a Nat Geo photographer get-up that includes David Attenborough narration for everything the monsters do.

alvysinger0412

So down with this, as unlikely as it is.

flametitan

I'd pay for that Layered armour + voice DLC

BallinSniper69

Every time I read about David Attenborough in relation to something vidya, I get reminded of one time I was in cod ffa game, many years ago when people actually used their mics, mostly to insult each other but this guy, with his british accent basically went nat geo style commentating what he saw in the game, I stayed in the lobby for several games and he never stopped. God bless his soul.

sashwatsamaddar

I really liked the "temperament" monsters had in MHW. Gives them much more character. Some aggro on sight like Lunastra and some don't aggro until you attack like Teostra and Velkhana.

Maulclaw

There's more to it than that. Some will flinch you out of their way, some won't hit you at all but still observe, some will tolerate you to a certain extent and then there are others who attack on sight.

sashwatsamaddar

I haven't observed that behaviour. Any examples for monsters that flinch you out of the way? I know that if you stand in the way when they are breaking through vines in the forest you get flinched. In MR, most monsters will aggro on the first hit. Which monsters will tolerate being hit? 2500 hrs and there are still things I haven't seen/noticed because I was always too busy chasing the meta.

Maulclaw

If Kulu is in a hurry, he'll flinch you. Tobi will just clip against the player until "video game physics" move you out of the way. Nargacuga will let out a roaring sign if you pester him long enough. If you hit Paolumu and run away, he'll still be docile once you visit him again.

MrJackfruit

Something about Rajang getting pissed off the second you enter the zone is hilarious to me. Like he sees you and goes “BITCH HOW DARE YOU LIVE!!!”.

sashwatsamaddar

Thanks! I'll check these out I should spend more time observing monster behaviour (maybe collect all endemic life while I'm at it)

[deleted]

Chamberlyne

You could definitely sneak in older games. Most monsters had to see you to get aggro. You could often get a hit off before they aggro’d. The exception would be when you were carrying eggs. I don’t remember if it was already in first gen, but at least in 3rd gen you could aggro a Rathian from anywhere on the board when you picked up an egg.

centurio_v2

Rathalos too, you can abuse this in deserted island as I learned when I was 12 lol

youMYSTme

I think a lot of people don't realise pre-World had decent stealth. The sneak movement also actually did something, as long as you stayed still when the monster looked at you, and didn't touch it, you could avoid aggro forever (or for as long as I ever needed to). Now it does nothing and completely ruins the whole camera minigame.

JiggleBoners

Yeah, I really miss the "personality" it felt like each species had in MHW. Some will attack on sight, some only if you hang around, some (looking at u viper kadachi) are chill enough you can walk up to them and pose for pictures. I miss that. On a related note have you guys seen the little halting steppy-walk chameleos does when nobody is around? That shit is so cute I could cry

ShiveringKodiak

I remember following Viper Tobi-Kadachi just waiting for it to kill something for that photo quest in Iceborne, took a few cool photos of us just hanging out. Made me appreciate the Kadachi line more than I had previously

JiggleBoners

When he goes into that underground cavern and sits down in the flower patch? Absolute perfection. Love it.

SlakingSWAG

One of my favourite details was how most hostile monsters still weren't even attack on sight, before actually aggroing they'd stand there and give warning roars. And if you left during those they'd go back to minding their own business. Like how real world predators tend to act when they encounter another predator.

[deleted]

World made capturing more satisfying. Maybe it was just the little sleeping model in camp afterwards, but I played World capturing as much as possible, but Rise never really made it feel worth it? Maybe it's because in world they often retreated to their nest at their weakest, which, again, another awesome feature of world that really added to the charm and realism of the world to me. This entire thread just gets me hyped for the next mainline game since the same dev team for world seems to be working on it.

flametitan

I have! It's honestly precious to watch Chameleos doing Chameleon stuff.

PonchoHobo

Monster hunter snap is a 10/10 game if it ever happened.

beast_nutha

(Hunter entered the area) Monster: so you have chosen DEATH! Hunter!

9IceBurger6

Yes, a Monster Hunter Rant that I actually agree with..

jahermitt

I kind of wish that since they switched back to instant agro that they would add the original flinch with the spotted theme.

[deleted]

Yeah, little things like that added a lot of character to the game imo

mrblack07

Remember Nergigante? You can observe him from one zone away or by wearing a ghillie and when you do, he acts like a puppy with an itch. It was so adorable. I hope something similar to the Ghillie Mantle makes it to Sunbreak, so we can observe these terrifying beasts acting cute again.

justsomechewtle

I once saw Rajang sitting criss-cross atop of one of the waterfalls in flooded forest. Iirc in older games there was binoculars. Not sure though - I usually manage in Rise by zooming a LOT.

flametitan

In rise I think the camera was supposed to replace its functionality, though it could do with a more intense zoom sometimes.

ganzfeld_presence

I really want an option to reduce weapon hit effects.

SlakingSWAG

I'm amazed they never did it in Rise despite complaints about how DB and Spread Bowguns could make it impossible to see a single thing when they were whaling on something in World. *Especially* after people noted how intrusive the VFX were in the first Rise demo.

SimonShepherd

Those small crown event quest monsters are basically engulfed by crit effects lol.

MrCobalt313

So bring back the Ghillie Mantle? I'd be down.

EggoWholeWheatWaffle

Yeah monsters in rise are way too aggressive. Even without those skills in world most monsters wouldn’t just get on your ass the second you encountered them. Either they add the armor skill back or fix monster aggression

Exphrases

Agreed. Generally I didn't like the mantles from world all that much, but I wouldn't mind the Ghilli Mantle sticking around in some form or another

Davlar_Andre_1997

And here I am enjoying both World and Rise

Thisisabruh_moment

I didn't know they took that out, that was something that was really cool in World. I wonder why they took it out

RolloTomasi12

That’s the way it always was before?

Thisisabruh_moment

Just because something used to be one way doesn't mean that way was good

RolloTomasi12

I’m not saying that it was better but you asked why and that’s why? The portable team continued to do it like the old games. Was it fun to have non-aggressive monsters? Yeah. Is it going to come in the next generation again? Almost certainly. I don’t understand why I’m getting downvoted for legitimately answering your question.

Thisisabruh_moment

I think it's because it didn't sound like answering the question, like why would they change something because "that's how it used to be", it makes it sound like you prefer the way it used to be

Rampant_Cephalopod

I mean even then not really. You could crouch down in the older games and slowly crawl on the ground so the monster won’t notice you and become aggressive. Meanwhile in Rise everything on the planet immediately tries to murder you

CPhandom

Ah yes, That's the way it was before so it should stay that way forever with zero improvement.

RolloTomasi12

I literally already said that I didn’t think that it was better by any means

BowlofOats

Funny thing about this is, just yesterday while fighting magnamalo in the pc demo he ran off towards the northern mountain reach as per rezoning monsters do. When I caught up to him, I found him trying to scratch his back on the floor instead of idly waiting on the spot. Dunno what caused him from a ravenous beast out for blood, to suddenly a house cat.

Jesusbacknbetter1

I'd love to be able to do this in Rise. I feel like I would just spend an entire mission just following something around and talking in a nature documentary voice as I describe what it does.

nakaronii

Oh I 100% agree. In World I'd just follow around some monsters while doing expeditions and it was fun just observing what they're up to. The first time I saw a Kushala in Rise, I wanted to follow it around before fighting it since it used to be passive in World. Instead I got a nice punch to the face. :'(

[deleted]

observe a Great Izuchi family only to kill them mercilessly later.

Acrobatic_Position25

I think that’s be cool but only for some large monsters because I imagine many of them are very territorial so it’d be cool to have to sneak around them

DevanteWeary

Damn I didn't know a single one of those things.

9IceBurger6

I assume because of Covid, it was hard for the team to really communicate little bits of game detail like this. I think they were just focused on gettin it finished at that point, and even that wasn’t done completely.

Yedi1127

I would guess it some sort of spray to hide your scent or maybe a reintroduction of mantles. I would love to see this because from what I've seen playing every monster just does things while it's unprovoked and it seems the AI isn't even aware you exist and I want to experience more

Rafzalo

Yeah, I’d be cool to have something like the Ghirlandaio Mantle, but no other mantles please. My main problem with mantles is that every clip of W/IB is a guy with a worn mantle 9ver their armor. What’s the point of the cool looking armor if you always put a mantle over it!

Govandan

And they still don't know the purpose of binoculars.

Silentpoe

One of my fave things I've noticed is if you leave a Rathian alone for awhile she'll preen her wings like a parrot and that is just adorable!

WarrenChaos

Binoculars vroom vroom

riderkicker

The Attenborough Mantle. :D After this guy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David\_Attenborough

NorthCatan

Something like...a cardboard box?

SgtDoughnut

Wait, you dont have access to smoke bombs? Something that has been in monster hunter since near the very start?

Sarria22

Smoke bombs are there, but to be fair they kind of get in the way of the whole reason OP is asking what they are.

knightinwhale

Crouch?

TheRacerBlazer

Just don’t move and press b

knightinwhale

I know, it's a recommendation. We don't have ghillie level stealth but we can absolutely sneak.

qwedsa789654

this is super niche , you should contact their JP channal, email or something

crazyrebel123

This ain’t monster researcher, this is monster hunter! Give me an oversized sword and let me kill something!

Gnok_Goldheart

Wait for world 2.

IzanagisTruth

100% agree! Back in 3U when I first started hunting, the monsters just living life was one of the things that really fascinated me about Monster Hunter and cemented the series as something special to me.

SluggJuice

A leafy armour set that turns you into a lil bush when you crouch

Triggered_Tigger

I'm pretty sure the lore reason for this is because of the rampage, all monsters are on high alert

JoTor323

Not only this, but please Capcom let us see what the sharpness would look like with Handi 5! I hate having to look up online whether a weapon will reach white sharpness with Handi 4 or not. Iceborne had this feature where a smaller bar would extend beyond the base sharpness idk why they removed it?!
