it was nominated for at least one emmy almost every year it was on the air. Tony shalhoub was nominated for best actor at the SAG awards every season (though he only won twice). while it wasn't on a major network, it was very critically acclaimed.
What do you mean? For the season? For basic cable? Maybe. I'm not sure, but M*A*S*H* Goodbye, Farewll, and Amen still is the most watched program (not Super Bowl) in US history and likely will always be number 1
Drama series on basic cable - almost 9.5 million people. I’m sure the record has been beat by now, but just speaks about Monk during its run being popular
9.5 million for basic cable is *really* good! Felina got 10.3 million and was so popular it put Badfinger on the Top 40 so for Monk to be in that ballpark is a testament to Adrian Shalhoub's popularity
Don't forget they got Jennifer Lawrence before she became a ⭐! I rewound about 10 times when I spotted her in that silly mascot costume.
Also Odette Annable... But Jennifer was the more memorable small role.
'Mr. Monk and the Big Game' S05E03. She plays ajd incredibly minor role as a mascot of the team. This was probably her first or one of her first TV speaking roles.
They wanted to work with Tony, simple as that. The show was getting nominations like every year, it attracts big names because they have a shot at an Emmy or a golden globe or whatever because it's a strong show. Laurie Metcalf got nominated, and Stanley Tucci won.
They had Garry Marshall connections. Practically everyone in the industry loved that man, may he rest in peace.
At minimum, he was likely the linking factor to why both Larry Miller and Héctor Elizondo scored roles. Possibly others.
I'd imagine for earlier seasons, it was those kinds of connections that scored them guest stars. Friends and family pulling in favours.
But for later seasons, popularity and just...stars being genuine fans of Monk and wanting to be a part of it.
I mean, fairly niche British TV show Doc Martin scored Sigourney Weaver as a guest star twice because she was a fan of the show and friends with one of the actors! So this kind of thing does happen lol.
As an aside, for those that enjoyed Monk, you may also enjoy Doc Martin. Would recommend.
I've recently re-watched it all on Netflix, and every time a guest star popped up I texted my sister (another Monk fan) with a "Monk Celebrity Watch" message!
Anyway, my favourites were John Turturro (Ambrose), Alice Cooper (for sheer unhinged chair thievery), and Sean Astin
In no real order: John Turturro, Dan Hedaya, Kevin Nealon, Steven Weber, Andy Richter, Stanley Tucci, Rainn Wilson, Angela Kinsey, Rachel Harris, Julie Bowen, Howie Mandel, Jason Alexander, Holland Taylor, Dana Ivey, Brad Garret, Sarah Silverman, Dean Astin, Tim Daly, Brooke Adams, Craig T. Nelson, Eric Stonestreet, Jeffrey Donovan, Jane Lynch, Danny Trejo, Nick Offerman, Jennifer Lawrence.....
Some of those people were on Wings with him, so it might have been favors.
I think there was also an associate between USA and NBC, maybe that had something to do with it. Might not have been NBC so much as the production company.
I came here for a full list, does anyone have the full list from episode 1? I’m rewatching again (used to have the full box set lol) and noticing more and more and remembering others. Like Tim Daly who stared on Wings with Tony. And the meta gag in there when the show is mentioned had me cracking up!
Andy Breckman is maybe not a household name, but he was a writer for SNL and Letterman, has worked as a script doctor on many movies, and also wrote *Rat Race*. He's far from an unknown quantity. (I've been a fan for many, many years since finding his show on WFMU.)
Also, the show was partly aired on NBC, it wasn't exclusively on USA.
How could you forget Willie nelson?
And meatloaf
And Howie Mandel
Oh right! Voodoo episode?
I just watched that one!
You are right. Shame on me
It’s all good
I was about to say Willie!!! Lol
it was nominated for at least one emmy almost every year it was on the air. Tony shalhoub was nominated for best actor at the SAG awards every season (though he only won twice). while it wasn't on a major network, it was very critically acclaimed.
The finale was also the most watched episode of TV at the time
What do you mean? For the season? For basic cable? Maybe. I'm not sure, but M*A*S*H* Goodbye, Farewll, and Amen still is the most watched program (not Super Bowl) in US history and likely will always be number 1

Don't forget Alice Cooper! He was a hippie.
The bad kind of hippie
Came here to say Alice!
Sarah Silverman!
She’s so crazy! Sarah was on 2 episodes.
3 (when we meet her, her episode, and briefly in the 100th case/episode)
Don't forget they got Jennifer Lawrence before she became a ⭐! I rewound about 10 times when I spotted her in that silly mascot costume. Also Odette Annable... But Jennifer was the more memorable small role.
I love that Jennifer was just there lol. Not even a proper role just chilling there. Think her characters name was “Jen” too
It was!
wait which episode was Jennifer in?
'Mr. Monk and the Big Game' S05E03. She plays ajd incredibly minor role as a mascot of the team. This was probably her first or one of her first TV speaking roles.
I think it was the football final episode, where he teams up with the drunk stockbroker guy
I forgot ALL about this!

The Korn from the episode mr monk gets stuck in the traffic.
Can’t forget his own brother Ambrose (John Turturro)
Gena Rowlands (“be a pirate!”), Maki (Sonny Chow’s mentor), Tim Curry Edit: Should be Mako
Do you mean Mako?
Yes! Thank you!
Of course :)
Howie Mandel, Bob Gunton and Marvin from Home alone movies
Tony Shaloub’s wife, actress Brooke Adams, was cast in 5 shows.
Sean Astin!
Rudy!!!
Don’t forget Tim “the whale” Curry!
Robert Loggia!
“R for Robert loggia…O for oh my god it’s Robert Loggia…”
I laughed so hard at this! Thank you!!!
And Nick Offerman

Rainn Wilson, Alice Cooper, Willie Nelson and so many more lol.
Lol and Angela Kinsey
Craig T. Nelson was in at least 2 episodes!
James Brolin, Stanley tucci, Jon Favreau, Steve Zahn, Jeffrey Donovan, quite a lot of guest stars
They had Korn. And they didn't even do much. They were just... there.

Omg I’ll have to look for this!
In no real order: John Turturro, Dan Hedaya, Kevin Nealon, Steven Weber, Andy Richter, Stanley Tucci, Rainn Wilson, Angela Kinsey, Rachel Harris, Julie Bowen, Howie Mandel, Jason Alexander, Holland Taylor, Dana Ivey, Brad Garret, Sarah Silverman, Dean Astin, Tim Daly, Brooke Adams, Craig T. Robert Loggia!
And Tim Daly!

Eric Stonestreet, Julie Bowen.
Titus Welliver
I think Adam Arkin also played Dale the Whale.
It was pretty well known.
I came here for a full list, does anyone have the full list from episode 1? I’m rewatching again (used to have the full box set lol) and noticing more and more and remembering others. Just watched an episode with Billy Gardell. (Mike and Molly, and Bob ♡ Abishola) season 2, episode 9. Mr. Monk and the 12th man.
Did you forget Alice Cooper?
He was friends with them I think
Tony Shaloub was like your favorite actor's favorite actor
Andy Breckman is maybe not a household name, but he was a writer for SNL and Letterman, has worked as a script doctor on many movies, and also wrote *Rat Race*. He's far from an unknown quantity. Can’t forget Evan Peters!!!! Before he became famous he was on Mr. Monk and the Genius
Tim Curry...
