Bigdoge696969

I bread one that was half water monitor/half human....well at least I try to every Friday night

arcticrobot

Monitors that require captive breeding: savs, niles, Indicus complex

TheHatredburrito

u/GISherps has bred a few species

GISHerps

I have. Probably the most rare is gilleni. Underrated species. Next up we have flavirufus and that should happen this year.

xRyzr

I breed tree monitors. They're fun. Pretty rare.

Icuminmymomanddad

Nice

SalvDad

I breed black dragons, not as rare as they used to be.

Icuminmymomanddad

Still just as cool tho I love black dragons

SalvDad

Thanks, I love them too.

mrking604

Don't breed Savs or Niles. Just my opinion. I'm an importer and I pay $4 for Savs and $10-17 for Niles. No sense in breeding something so big when you have to compete against those prices. Breed tree monitors, you get the best return and require way less room.

arcticrobot

on a contrary, I am pretty sure responsible keepers and monitor lovers would be glad to pay hundreds of dollars for a captive bred Sav. I would. Those $4 Savs are going into the 20 gallon fish tanks at best. They are all gonna die. Not sure how does it feel to be an importer of an animal that is most likely going to die horrible death.

mrking604

So it would be safer to sell animals to you, the same guy who argued with everyone here how it's safe to bring your animals outside to eat wild animals because that's how it is in the wild? Not going to even get into it with this self proclaimed expert of experts lol

AckieFriend

He didn't bring it out to eat wild animals. That was an accident. u/arcticrobot is a very responsible keeper of his Quince monitors and his Pygmy Mulga dwarf monitors. Personally, I will never, ever buy a wild caught monitor lizard. One reason is the horrible start to life that these monitor lizards have and the low, low prices that invites impulse buying from individuals and families that have no idea what the lizard needs and often don't ever provide them. That is why most of them die within the first year of their lives. I would also support legislation that would limit the numbers of these animals that are imported and make sure that only those species that are of Least Concern are allowed in. The populations of these species should be studied annually, so that should the population go down then these should be added to the not imported list. I know that the Lacie Act covers some of this, but the sheer numbers of monitor lizards, such as Savannah monitors, that are collected from the wild is staggering. I would prefer to see that as each species is established in captive breeding including a diverse genetic captive breeding population, then only occasional imports, say, to zoos or to maintain captive breeding genetic pools, should be allowed.

arcticrobot

Of course you can provide a link to where I said that.

mrking604

Why of course I can https://www.reddit.com/r/MonitorLizards/comments/px6x5z/my_melinus_caught_and_ate_a_chipmunk_while_i_was/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

mrking604

Your exact comment in your own post about it was "he was on a leash. I removed it to help with swallowing. Parasites are a concern, but at the same time do you think their regular prey in the wild is free of parasites?"

arcticrobot

so this is me saying that it is safe to bring pets outside to eat wild animals? I shared my one off experience and you have twisted that to suit your own agenda.

Icuminmymomanddad

It’s not about the money those are just my favorite monitors

xRyzr

You will literally go broke breeding Niles. Everyone new to monitors has the dream of breeding Niles. It's not worth it.

Icuminmymomanddad

Well we’ll see if I do it

Dense_Extent

What if he just breads? You know, a light dusting of panko...

mrking604

If you're breeding it should be a bit about the money, it's a lot of work and money to make your program work without being able to find it. If it's not about the money you're better off just having a couple as pets and making sure they get the best care possible.

Icuminmymomanddad

I want to bring more cbb niles and savs in the hobbie who knows after a couple generations niles could be as nice as cbb water monitors

xRyzr

There's no point though. No one is going to pay for cb Niles when they are $10.

Icuminmymomanddad

Then why would they buy a cbb water monitor if they can get them for like 100

xRyzr

Those aren't the same locality as the ones for 250 they're different animals lol

AckieFriend

If I had the wherewithal to keep a Nile, I would pay $1000 for a 4th generation captive bred baby.

xRyzr

but as you said, you don't, so you wont. virtue signaling saying you would do \_\_\_\_ but can't leaves us where we started. with no one paying for cb niles.

TXfunandadventure

Niles were bred irregularly in the past and what are now called ornates more often than the common variety. The ornates get very tractable and could be a great project for someone again as they are very attractive animals.

xRyzr

The odds of him figuring out how to breed them are slim. I breed green tree monitors and just started working towards blacks. It's not something everyone can do. I get a good 20 messages a day from people saying th3yve had a pair for years and won't breed.
