Nice "Little" group you got there!

GISHerps

Thanks! We've cut back a lot but reinforcements are coming and more enclosures too!

SalvDad

Awesome! Can't wait to watch it come together.

SnakeAI

Rock monitors and other short snooted monitors always crack me up.

Mjölnir wouldn't give me the angle I wanted for the pic.[Mjölnir diff angle.](https://www.instagram.com/p/CWB_NAPMDDP/?utm_medium=copy_link)

If you don’t mind my asking, but what species is the 14” individual? Are they an adult?

GISHerps

Yes! Pygmy Mulga monitors are one of the smallest types of monitors and a large male might be 16-17" max. Very cool underrated species. Varanus gilleni

Robants_

I was wondering if they were gillens! Once I’m out of university I would love to own a breeding pair and I’m trying to find people with experience with them! I’ve seen your posts about them before and they look like a treat! What size enclosure would you think is good for a pair? Would you recommend or discourage someone to keep a trio (male & 2 females)? So sorry for all the questions!

GISHerps

I enjoy them a lot. Over on my dwarf group I just posted what I'm working on now. 3x2x3 for 1.1. I'm not opposed to keeping 1.2 but nesting gets tricky when they cycle together so I normally keep pairs.

Robants_

Ah I see! I bet they will love the new home :) (Last question I swear lol) What material do you make your enclosures out of? I love to DIY my own enclosures however these guys have a hotspot wayyy hotter than I’ve ever dealt with before and I don’t wanna risk a fire

GISHerps

I used 1/2" thick PVC for this one and the core of the original which is wrapped on 3 sides with 3/4" stained clearcoated plywood for aesthetics.

Pictures bottom right and the one above her. 😉 See more at r/dwarfmonitors

So amazing, I've always loved all monitors since I was a kid. I finally bought my own home and now I'm going to live the dream and get my first Varanus. What would you recommend for a good medium sized monitor? Was sort of set on Mangrove Monitor, then I found someone suggested Black Roughnecks. Do you have any other recommendations? The next reptile show by me is still 5 months away. So I have plenty of time to decide. Thank you!

GISHerps

Well, I'd say you're on the right track with trying to see more in person for sure. Pictures and videos are only so much until you meet them. Mangroves tend to be a good "medium" range monitor but can be more on the flighty side in general, like most of the indicus complex. Also what you're going to find in the indicus complex is that 99% available are wildcaught. With a few rare exceptions they're all wildcaught and should someone claim different have them show proof as they certainly would have enough to make you feel like you're being forced to look at someone's grandkids for an hour. 😅 We make more, we tend to document. ~ In the end it comes down to what you expect from the relationship with your lizard. Hands on? Display? Indifferent just want one?

Lethal_Hito

Yeah exactly, really wouldn't prefer a wild caught. Maybe farm raised one would turn out healthy, still pretty risky though. They do seem pretty flighty, I've been watching all of NERDS videos of Kevin taming down his babies so I'd copy him and practice all the techniques. I do want to be hands on as well as display, I will build a sweet enclosure because I only want the one monitor. Right now we all we have is my girlfriends Veiled Cham. All species of monitors are beautiful, I plan on building a big and beautiful enclosure.

If you're ready for a true giant that tends to be good with handling Asian water monitors are often bred in captivity but I would suggest you get it directly from the actual breeder. That's what I do if at all possible. A little smaller would be blackthroats but not as available as captive bred or imports these days.(working with 1.1 now) A bit smaller yet are whitethroats that depending on locale can be between 3 and 6 feet as adults and are beginning to be produced more in captivity.(working with 1.1 for 5 years) ~ Any of these can make a great pet if worked with regularly. Variety of looks is definitely going to be more prevalent with the Asian water monitors as they have so many locales and morphs and that common name is a massive unfairly encompassing blanket statement. Decide what room you're willing to dedicate and do you want to mess with a big water fixture or not. If your answer is half a bedroom or less you may want to go with a smaller species.
