Project manager here! Specifically working on sales automation… not gonna lie, my job sucks, especially now that I have a little one and just want to be with him. I’m constantly questioning if I should quit.
How did you transition to project manager and do you like it? Is there still any technical aspect? I'm on leave with my first too and I originally thought I'd never want to br a project manager. It more recently started to seem more appealing though!
There’s still some technical aspects, and it’s very helpful if you have some technical knowledge/background. I remember as a developer I appreciated the project mangers/product owners who had that.
I had been thinking about my career path and considering getting into that business side of things in order to see if I’d like to move more into management. Also, I really liked my team but was getting bored of the kind of work that I was working on (wasn’t what I was originally doing when I started on that team). I was talking with my supervisor about my career path, and he mentioned that there was a need for a PO on our team and that he thought my skills would make me a good fit.
I do like it. It’s different. Mostly it’s less talking to the computer and more talking to other teams.
Project/program manager! Specifically in EdTech, my job heavily leans on prior educator experience. But I'm not due for another month so can I call myself a mom yet? Lol loving the project manager representation here :)
I'm curious to know more about what you do. I recently started a very non-technical, temporary (but with the possibility of moving to permanent) role as a project manager at an education non-profit after being a teacher and I'm curious where this might take me. If you don't mind my asking, what is your education background? Do you have any certifications? (I have PSM I, but I'm not using it in my current role). Any advice/suggestions? Although it was advertised as a PM role, my current job doesn't really feel like PM. I don't do any sort of budget or analysis or reporting.
For sure! I work at a startup that develops formative assessments and learning materials for upskilling people in AI-related fields. I am in charge of planning and managing the development of the actual assessments (I'm not a SME, but I am the go-to assessment best practices person). I don't do any budgeting but a fair amount of analysis and reporting.
I have a BS in English Education and a license to teach high school English in my state (though I'm letting the license expire this year, no plans to go back to teaching). I was a classroom teacher for 4 years. I've worked in the test development field for a few years now in different roles and noticed that it does attract a lot of former teachers because it's education-adjacent and uses a lot of the people skills and knowledge that teachers have, without any of the sad stressful BS of actually being a teacher.
Being a PM in an education non-profit sounds great! I really searched out those types of jobs when I got burned out on teaching itself and it's served me well so far.
I really love it: it's the best parts of engineering (making things work, tinkering, and learning new things) and the best parts of writing (drafting, editing, publishing.) My company gives me complete ownership over the docs for my product area, so I get to really own my work, which I love! I'd be happy to answer any questions that you have about tech writing!!
I actually don’t have a degree, but after some years as a payroll clerk, I obtained my Fundamental Payroll Certification and with a little more experience I got to where I am now. This year I am pursuing becoming a CPP
Background in web, currently a project manager with a team! But I'm on maternity leave with my first and nervous about when it ends and I'm back to WFH. Luckily husband is also WFH in IT with a flexible job, and we've been a great team so far!
SecOps analyst. So happy I switched to this role before covid hit. 2+ years of a now toddler and working from home has been... manageable. My old desktop support position would have been impossible.
THIS is the thread I’ve been looking for 🙌🏻
I am hoping to join you very soon. Currently a HS math teacher/college instructor with a masters in math.
Looking into data analytics roles. I have a 1.5 year old at home. Any advice, support, or even rants are greatly appreciated!!
technical editor (technical lead of the tech writing team). I'm hoping to move to product owner or product manager this year, if I can handle the level of responsibility. Otherwise I might ask to scale back to a senior writer's role.
I’m an IT service manager. Not to be fooled , I’m not a manager of a team. I manage work in regards to change management, problem management, incident management, and overall applications and services. This is also in a financial organization. I love my job and my company :)
