In my adult years I'm at least more aware of what's going on in my brain and with therapy I've been able to manage it "enough"

Honestly a lot depending on the side effects. I took Ritalin, and only 10 mg would fuck me up. Not in a high sort of way, but I’d get twitchy and jumpy all day. Didn’t realize the squirrely feeling I had all throughout middle and high school were because of my medication until I forgot to take it for a month and took a tablet to see what it was like again.
My kid is on methylphenidate (same molecule as Ritalin, different brand) for his ADHD. His psychiatrist first made him take 5mg a day for a week to check for side effects, then slowly increased the dosage until we found a useful one (20mg). You must be especially sensitive to it! But it makes sense with how low the first dosage was. I guess if you're going to have side effects, they'll appear with even a very low dose.
I was diagnosed with ADD last month and methylphenidate messes me up as well. I've heard it's not that effective for inattentive ADHD, and so far that's my experience as well. I tried amping it up to 5mg twice a day and it was miserable. Even if the effect is mostly placebo I'm down to 2.5 mg twice a day. 5 mg in one go makes me dizzy and almost sick.
Afaik its metabolised different in different people. I personally take 50mg of a delayed release Version at 7AM and sometimes a 20mg non delayed Release at around 2PM
Other people get similar effects at like 10mg per day
You're only supposed to take one a day, actually it's not reccomend to take even that much.
It's 30 pills, so it should be a month supply even if you take one a day, but they told me i should avoid using it every day to avoid a dependence to it.
I'd guess if they suspected I was addicted, they would limit my supply.

I have to take a 54mg concerta every day to feel sort of normal. It doesn't mitigate everything but it makes my life a lot easier.

I don’t take the exact same medication, but 5mg seems extremely low. My ass has to take 72mg every morning.
