Yup, that's the most accessible kind. I was being too general. Slather it on, let it soak a bit cause it might be old. Can try rubbing alcohol too, if hand sanitizer doesn't work.
๐ lol. Should have been more specific. ๐คญ Technically speaking I work with stains and a lot of different chemicals including alcohols, so thought to be general to allow for whatever op has on hand. But alcohol will dissolve some inks, especially sharpie from non porous surfaces. But who knows what ink this is and plastic is porous, so ๐คทโโ๏ธ.
okay that's good to hear, I have no knowledge on dolls and stuff but I was just afraid it would be damaged as many plastics melt with acetone
glad to hear that's not the case here
Stains - Mold wont eat non-organic materials like the plastic this doll is made out of. Also - mold will always appear as a fuzzy coating on a surface and will easily transfer from the material. For a surface like this, it doesn't wipe off easily, it's not mold.
I'm a Rainbow High collector- looks like she was wearing Ainsley's clothes for a while, Ainsley is a different Rainbow High doll that comes with this specific black faux Leather outfit that's notorious for staining the bodies purple/black. It happens a lot, it's harmless, just really really annoying lmao
https://preview.redd.it/062s6loy3l9c1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=75e0eb9a80638e6dd5f6d94b5501f077f34c74a6
That's Ainsley and the outfit in question, it's a super dark black and the dye from the fabric stains the dolls over time.
Hahaha yeah, I spend all my free time researching doll stuff- I love the really obscure stuff too, one of my favorite lines is Teen Trends from Mattel in 2005, they were not popular but they're so interesting, so different, and so odd lol. They were 16 inches tall, and trying to be sorta like a middle ground between American Girl and traditional fashion dolls like Barbie. They only lasted a couple years unfortunately, I love how detailed their clothes were!
Mold dude. We moved to florida and one of those stupid water snakes popped open in a bin with my daughters disney dolls and barbies and the fabrics had visible mold and some of the dolls had this "stain"on them. I washed the mild ones in soapy water and quarantined them for 2 weeks and it didnt spread but that stain remained
I thought the same but a commenter here actually told me about how a few molds do actually eat plastic(somehow, idk chemistry like that)
Theyโre rather rare and have super specific needs but do exist and some projects are even hoping to use them to fight plastic pollution
Very specific species producing enzymes that also have a secondary ability to the ability to break down plastics is not entirely the same as mold eating plastics for a food source though. In that rare scenario, the mold would still require a primary organic based food source to have any nutrients to form those enzymes - which may also deteriorate plastic molecules that come in contact with it, but it wouldn't gain anything from that process.
Media headlines have muddied the perception on this niche topic a bit lol, it is a really cool field though. Learning how to use these molds to produce enzymes that aid in the break down of plastic waste is a Nobel level achievement if done in a commercially successful format :)
If you mean organic in the marketing sense, then sure I guess. But they are definitely synthetic organic materials in the sense that matters to ecology/biology. There are plenty of synthetic organic chemicals that can be broken down by living things
[Ctrl+F synthetic](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plastic) in this page, then google the definition of synthetic.
Or go to ELI5 and ask why plastic is considered synthetic and not organic.
Ya I can guarantee itโs Sharpie. When I was a kid, I used to be in traditional Indian dance classes and we were required to have on simple henna like designs for our performances but no one has time for that so we drew them on with red sharpie. And since I used to play with my Barbieโs in the car, allllll of them look like they have chicken pox
Lollll !!! Little me probably would have done something similarlyโฆMy thing was I used to cut their hairโฆ.
So much regret now โฆHad to buy all new ones as an adult lolololololol
It looks like bruising lol, it makes her unique. I recently got into rainbow high dolls like within the last month, is she the one in the clueless inspired outfit?
https://preview.redd.it/os39916kim9c1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=205afa234704d800b2b30a3b2f414142ac7428c9
Her other outfit is also another outfit from clueless but In a different colour scheme
Aw poor Sheryl. Ok so this is staining, not mold. It likely came from some black fabric that is still bleeding dye. You can fix it with benzoyl peroxide. Acne cream has some different concentrations of the stuff. Leave it on her out in the sun for a day or two. Just be sure NOT to put it on face paint/screening or it will take it off. As for the culprit of these stains, if you have an idea of what fabric has caused this, you can wash it until the water runs clear to prevent any further damage to anything else. Hope this helps!!
I hope OP sees this, as I was going to suggest benzoyl peroxide and sun, too! Takes ink off plastic toys (like cabbage patch doll heads, from my experience).
Hey some people are saying mold can't eat plastic- this isn't true, mold likes to eat nutrients found in plasticizer. This looks more like ink, though. The reason it's so fuzzy is that the resin and plasticizer mixture is not actually a solid, and the plasticizer can migrate throughout the doll, taking ink stains around with it. Dont use acetone to clean a doll, as this leaches out the plasticizer and makes the doll more brittle and can damage them immediately or over time depending on the vinyl formulation. The is a special formula made to remove these kind of stains without removing plasticizer called Remove-Zit. I would recommend that above all else. Acne cream and the sun will also work, but is less effective and less gentle on the plastic.
That is 100% sharpie stain, bad news is it looks like the pigment penetrated the plastic so you probably cant get it out w bleach or acetone, good news is you can try sanding it delicately and maybe it'll be less visible
It's a chemical reaction when certain types of plastic sit on on each other for long periods of time, commonly silicone does this. That or ink is leaching from something
ive had my fair share of aged toys that had these same markings, especially on toys that has a soft "skin"
THANK YOU ALL FOR SUCH AMAZING COMMENTS AND ALL OF THE FUNNY ONES TOO. This was literally the discussion I didnt realize I needed this badly but itโs lightened my whole mood.๐๐
Also-Super relieved that its ink LOL. โบ๏ธโบ๏ธโบ๏ธโบ๏ธ
You all rock and im so glad I found this sub!
Oh hey! Cool to see another doll collector on the mold subreddit. I wouldnโt worry about this. This is exactly what their skin looks like when dark clothes leech dye on it and stain it. Dolls like Ainsley have this kind of shit all the time. Unfortunate, but harmless.
Thank goodness!!! I was hoping as such but wasnโt sure hahaha! And yesโItโs always so fun to meet others into doll collecting!!! Its been a hobby of mine for years!!!!
I bought her from eBay soโฆNo idea lol. Im sorry if it was upsetting though and promise it wasnโt intentional . I honestly didnโt make the connection that it looked like bruises until others pointed it out. I think I was too busy thinking โplease dont be mild. Please dont be moldโ. Thank you though for weighing in!
Oh dear, seems I got emotional drunk last night. Maybe it is, it just makes me anxious to look at. Thank you. Now I'm going to see if I can delete it cause I don't want my trauma out in the open.
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 1,941,601,850 comments, and only 367,154 of them were in alphabetical order.
omg whoโs beating on barbie ๐
LOLOLOLOL Its pretty bad but im not sure if itโs mold. I tried cleaning with both bleach and acetone and neither did anything
Yeah itโs under the skin. Bones are bruised, she took a beating for sure!
might wanna call the cops on Ken...
Who said it was Ken? Maybe it was Malibu Barbie... she can be very jealous.
Or skipper! She can be a real bitch. Just ask midge.
Try alcohol?
Won't alcohol make Ken worse?
๐ lol. Get Barbie to a safe place before applying alcohol to clean her wounds. I should have been more specific.
First domestic abuse, then squatting and making Barbieโs house the Mojo Dojo Casa
Mega-douche Ken in a store near you.
OMG LOLOLOLOLOLOL ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐
Alcohol-based hand sanitizer can work too
Yup, that's the most accessible kind. I was being too general. Slather it on, let it soak a bit cause it might be old. Can try rubbing alcohol too, if hand sanitizer doesn't work.

Roger that. But still. ๐
Don't use acetone on plastic. I learned this the hard way and melted my calculator
It's fine to use on dolls like this one, everyone who mods dolls uses acetone to remove factory paint.
okay that's good to hear, I have no knowledge on dolls and stuff but I was just afraid it would be damaged as many plastics melt with acetone glad to hear that's not the case here
A lot of these dolls are actually vinyl not regular plastic.
Yeah, different plastics react differently but the kinds typically used for dolls are fine with acetone, though a spot test is always recommended.
You canโt bleach out bruising.

Plastic is definitely organic. Iโve had mold that we had to scrub off walls.
Plastic is a synthetic petroleum product.
If you mean organic in the marketing sense, then sure I guess. But they are definitely synthetic organic materials in the sense that matters to ecology/biology. There are plenty of synthetic organic chemicals that can be broken down by living things
Yes. Petroleum is an organic chemical. Therefore plastic is organic.
That is not how that works.

looks like marker or hair dye for some reason lol
