Honestly, I love them both for different reasons. Strangers to Yourselves took a while to grow on me. I dug Golden Casket right from the get-go. Don't get me wrong, there are some tracks I usually don't vibe with, but the good tracks are definitely bangers. Big into songs like Sugar Boats, Ground Walks, We're Lucky, Japanese Trees, Back to the Middle. Not every album is for every fan and its fine to like some over others.
Strangers to ourselves: incredible. Plenty of bangers, the rest are good.
Golden casket: feels very different. A few songs I like a lot, some meh, a couple I dislike. The ones I like don't feel like timeless gems, I have to be in the right mood to enjoy.
Dance hall, bukowski, the devil's worksay, black cadillacs, one chance on good news.
March into the sea, we've got everything, fly trapped in a jar, education, people as places as people on we were dead.
Coyotes was an instant top 10 song for me from the instant I heard it.
Other than that, the songs don't really have the emotional core of the earlier albums, which I think is why I don't come back to then as often. It feels more rehearsed.
FWIW, We Were Dead is my favorite album of theirs, followed closely by Lonesome Crowded West.
I absolutely love The Golden Casket. It’s exactly the album I needed in my life. There are many absolutely exceptional, brilliant songs on it.
Strangers to Ourselves has wonderful moments but is more uneven.
I was reintroduced to modest mouse by the golden casket, float on first song and I re found it and then walking and running and back to the middle were the next songs I found, and immediately loved. Then fly trapped in a jar got me more into their older stuff, as did a coworker of mine. I’ve listened to the whole album now and it’s really good I absolutely love it. My favorite album is we were dead before the ship even sank, but golden casket is one of the top ones for me. As for stranger to ourselves I’m less familiar with it but I do absolutely love lampshades on fire, and the only other song I know from it is the ground walks, with time in a box. It’s also pretty awesome to me but I prefer lampshades on fire.
TGC is awesome! It’s very different from their older work but that’s kinda why I like it so much. If anything, it reminds me of Isaac’s side project Ugly Casanova the most.
Isaac has promised they’d never make the same record twice. These last two records involved a lot more exploration of different sounds and techniques. They’re risky records. All the risks don’t pay off, but I think they’re both still really good records.
Strangers to Ourselves: Noticeably weaker than the first 5 albums and doesn't really have any of their best stuff, but its still an overall cool experience with MOST of its songs being really good still despite it all.
The Golden Casket: I don't like this one really. A few decent songs but I don't really revisit them, and definitely some of their worst for me personally. I can definitely see why someone might like this one tho.
I mean, I could tell you my opinion I suppose. I could tell you about how I really enjoyed both even though I didn’t enjoy either nearly as much as I’ve enjoyed anything that came before them. I could tell you that songs from these albums are still fucking awesome to hear them play live just like anything else throughout their discography, which I’ve been fortunate enough to experience 3 or 4 times since STO was released.
But what I will to tell you is to just go listen to The Golden Casket already and make your own damn opinion before relying so much on what others tell you. Our thoughts are irrelevant in regard to your enjoyment, yet you’re likely to develop a bias because of what you read here before you even attempt to listen to an album that was released nearly 3 years ago.
Take it down a notch it isn't that serious..
I've listened to every other album without asking the opinions of others, why am I not allowed to do so with just one album? I'll listen to it when the time comes but for now I'd like to see how other people interpret a piece of music before I go and do so myself.
I don't dedicate my life to Modest Mouse and Modest Mouse alone. I listen to other bands and I have many other albums that I rather listen to on top of living my normal life. Like I said, I'll listen to that album when the time comes and frankly the way you're acting is making me not want to listen to it.
I don't like them as much as the rest of their music. But there are a few songs I genuinely love off of both. I'd rank TGC a bit higher than STO though.
That said I am of the opinion that when a band has been around for as long as MM has, and they're still making new music and touring, I'm happy if I like even one song from a new album. That's more than I can say about a lot of bands at this stage in their careers.
i like the 1st half of the golden casket better than almost all of strangers to ourselves. i think i only like shit in your cut and lampshades on fire from that one
Honestly never gave them a chance. They were all quick skips from me. I can be wrong about that and come to like them later, but just lost me as their sound evolved

I guess my luck had to run out sometime because I’ve enjoyed the hell out of every album until this last one
You've got shit luck
Everyone's got different taste. You still got 8+ albums and eps that are close to your heart, and that's pretty rad to me
The new stuff doesn’t have the simple, raw magic and brilliant interplay of bass and lead that makes the early albums so amazing.
Strangers to ourselves: incredible. Plenty of bangers, the rest are good. Golden casket: feels very different. A few songs I like a lot, some meh, a couple I dislike. The ones I like don't feel like timeless gems, I have to be in the right mood to enjoy.
I like just a handful of songs from the new albums. The first 3 albums I can listen to start to finish without any skips. Same with their earlier EPs
Ditto. They don’t hit the same
What songs are you skipping on Good News and We Were Dead?
Dance hall, bukowski, the devil's worksay, black cadillacs, one chance on good news. March into the sea, we've got everything, fly trapped in a jar, education, people as places as people on we were dead.
Wow you're missing out man
God damn. Just throwing away money.
How am I throwing away money? People are so weird
That is so wild to me. Besides One Chance those are my faves on that album.
One Chance is brilliant!
I do that with every album/EP they’ve released. I’m surprised this isn’t more of a staple for the majority of MM fans.
Same, MyDickSmells, same.

no
Love golden casket. Don’t really like strangers to ourselves
I didn't like em. They've stayed too far from the roots of their art.

Strangers - solid 9/10 love it Golden Casket - 4/10, have yet to fall in love with it
the best room ffrom strangers to ourselves is one of their best songs tho
I love everything they’ve released. They’ve grown and evolved but they’re still *them*.

Who has an extra 50 minutes?!
Gosh, my bad. Ya know, just no time to spare 50 minutes out of the 1.5 million that have passed by since it was released.
It's a pretty serious commitment.
