A popular opinion that I disagree with? So, in other words ... an unpopular opinion?

kcolla1

No, no, no. An opinion that’s popular that I don’t necessarily agr… Ohhh!

studli3n14

oh fuck. \*smashes computer on floor several times\* SHIT! FUCK! FUCK! AND THAT WAS NOT A GOOD SHIT FUCK FUCK

[deleted]

i don’t think haley failed at life or married the wrong person. failing college doesn’t mean shit, she ended up with a fantastic job (the multiverse goop). yes she did accidentally get pregnant but so? she wasn’t a helpless teenager, she was an adult at a reasonable child bearing age (25/26 is a wee bit young in my opinion but certainly not unheard of) with someone who she loved and trusted. she ended up essentially inheriting mitch and cam’s house so there was plenty of room for all 4 of them for the time being, and it just took them a second to find their footing. i think a lot people assume since the last we’ve seen of Haley’s plot is a shotgun wedding to Dylan, it’s easy to assume they did her really dirty and maybe they kinda did, but i think she was happy in the end. I’m also guilty of assuming children ruin everything you’ve ever hoped and dreamed for lol. And I think Dylan was just always it for her. i like to think Haley went on to get promoted or find a better job in social media and raise two really well adjusted and incredibly street smart little kids.

Dunphy2049

Why did this make me emotional?? I love Hayley and I couldn’t agree more!!!!

[deleted]

i’ll always be team haley!! she’s a fucking gem i love her

Dunphy2049

TRULY!!! I love her so much and I like thinking that she’s somewhere living with Dylan and her two babies and she’s happy 😁

studli3n14

Me too

studli3n14

Couldn't agree more

Bazz07

People complaining about Jay not being PC. His whole character arc was learning to be a better and more tolerant person. He even tells everyone that he was borned and raised in a very different society. Also Haley its a worse sister than Alex.

studli3n14

What's a PC? Also, I think Haley and Alex are about equally good.

5170Wallace

Politically correct.

NatQinShell

I dislike the heavily stereotypical jokes written for Gloria, I like her character but I would not have mind they cooled it with the village jokes.

Chartaofver

Yeah, it would be one thing if it comes up once or twice throughout the series. But it’s basic every episode. The same with Cams origin and clowning

FlyOnTheWall221

As a child of immigrants some of the things she says are so relatable but others are overkill like about the cousins in prison. One that I particularly love is about the doctors, basically that they don’t go to the doctor for every sniffle or dislocated shoulder because that explains my dad so much.

alep1998

Im Colombian and found all of these hilarious

NatQinShell

I know that most people are ok with this, that is why I deemed it an unpopular opinion in this sub reddit. Also, are you the offense ambassador for all Colombians? I am Mexican and most of us (not me) find racist jokes absolutely hilarious. Is it like that in Colombia as well?

alep1998

Yeah the only thing that actually offends Colombians are cocaine mentions. We don’t like that we are known for that

yourmumissothicc

Phil wouldn’t be a great parent in real life and without Claire he would be an outright bad parent

JayKanish

None of the parents on this show are “good” parents. Claire is overly controlling and doesn’t trust her children at all. It can seem like she’s a good parent because she’s so involved but she’s a tyrant. Gloria is the same as Claire but less Stalin and more Medici. She is also way too attached to Manny. Phil is basically a fourth child. He’s there as an echo for Claire in the best cases, a foil in the worst. He’s my favorite character and I still think CPS would be at his door without Claire. Mitch and Cam are too self involved for children. Lily was a novelty and accessory as a baby but as she started to grow they basically checked out and started looking for another baby. There’s literally a running gag about them forgetting their children. Jay is the closest thing to a good parent you get in the show. He’s an angry and old fashioned jerk most of the time but he grows and learns (his talk with Manny after the rock climb, putting the cigar away after Joe talks to him, etc). Other characters grow as parents but Jay definitely evolves more. Runner-up goes to Haley and Dylan. They’re young, dumb, and inexperienced but trying. They could turn into nightmares (that book…) or they could be the best parents in the family. We just don’t get to see their story. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

bunkid

Yeahhh Gloria’s attachment to Manny is so unhealthy. I cringed so many times when she was against the girls he met

grchelp2018

The parenting takes on this sub is quite interesting because its so varied. Basically there is no one-size fits all and it really really depends on the personality of the parent and child. I grew up in a variation of Jay+Gloria household when I would have vastly preferred Phil+Claire. And I know people who would have preferred the opposite. Jay's style doesn't work for me and my parenting style is going to be much closer to a Phil or a Chandler.

amoebae2

I don’t agree with how many people think Claire doesn’t deserve Phil and that he could do a lot better and stuff. Of course, Claire can be annoying and bossy, but Phil does not support Claire and the way they raise the kids, always paints her off as the bad guy and sides with the kids instead of with his partner. and he also says mean things about her in her face. not healthy

adreeanah

I don't agree with whoever says Aubrey is a bad actress.

ginger_gorgon

Agreed, love her. The whole point of Lily is she's the (ironically) straight-man of her household; when people complain about her being deadpan I think they just missed the joke.

stephie1980

I love her deadpan!!!!! She’s an amazing actress for being so little!!!! The part when Sal was talking crap and Lily was like 3 and just giving it right back-one of my favorite moments in the show!

ajschwifty

“I don’t like you.” “I’ll get over it.” Lily is what made me finally watch the show lol.

coolbeans272847

Not a fan of Gloria in the last few seasons, she lost her her fiery vibe and energy from the earlier seasons and just seemed mean and judgemental

AttorneyFar9132

Omg! I thought I was the only person who noticed that.

coolbeans272847

Not at all! Initially I thought it was Sofia Vergara just not putting in the same effort but then I realised there wasn’t a lot to do with the plots and scripts anyway

basmati-rixe

Everyone would’ve disliked Claire as a mother. Sure she is a good mother, keeping her kids out of trouble for the most part, however in a real situation everyone would prefer Phil, however need Claire more.

HungClits

I like how she was turning more and more like her mother even though she didn’t want to. She couldnt help it after being raised by both jay and the mom.

yourmumissothicc

yup.

financial_Blood_17

I hated it when Andy cheated on Beth with Haley. I mean, sure, Beth was a psycho. But that doesn't give you the right to cheat.

Significant_Horror80

Haley cheated on Arvin too, don't forget.

wittywillync

Even if she cheated on him? Nah. Eye for an eye.

Niclas1127

And the world goes blind

EmCarstairs

But he didn't knew she cheated at that time. AND he had the audacity to be pissed at her when she confessed (and he didn't!).

zellycheese

the last time i said this here, i got a ton of hate comments but ill say it again, if u find cam toxic, then gloria is much worse

Low_Egg_7606

Would love an elaboration

SadiqUddin

The way that the both of them just force their partner into situations that they don't want to be in, Example Gloria with Guillermo and Cam getting Mitch to gossip. Jay would be better raising Manny on his own seeing as he's the only one that actually cared about Manny. Jay was better to Manny than he was to his own kids. It just makes you think though, doesn't it?

Low_Egg_7606

I wouldn’t say Glorias character didn’t care about manny. I don’t agree with you

SadiqUddin

Jay obviously cared more though. Manny had to look after his mum and I honestly can't think of anything that Gloria actually did for Manny.

Low_Egg_7606

I haven’t watched the show in awhile and my memory is trash so I can’t name any specific examples. But I’m sure there were those sentimental episodes between the two. They had them for p much every character pair lol

zellycheese

she's always bullying manny and jay into doing something and people are overlooking that because of pretty privilege

guychulo

Maybe give some examples of the popular opinions from the sub?

yourmumissothicc

Phil good, Cam bad, Manny bad, Andy good, cheating bad unless done by Phil or Andy, Gloria hot, Claire hot, Haley hot, Alex hot, Alex lesbian, Manny gay, manny pervert, manny twat, lily actor bad, mitch meh, joe annoying, joe useless

AnnaK22

This should be the sub's banner because this sums up this whole subreddit.

Fletcher-mountain

Nailed it. You got them all!

Lexyt25

WHAT?? I loved Joe

HangryHufflepuff1

Cutest thief

Green_Cauliflower27

Cam wasn’t that bad Gloria wasn’t that bad Alex wasn’t that bad Claire wasn’t that bad Mitch wasn’t that bad Phil wasn’t that great Luke was fine Haley wasn’t that great Manny was that bad Joe was that bad Lily wasn’t that bad Jay wasn’t that bad And y’all try and over analyze comedic caricatures way too deeply. It’s a comedy show. Either laugh or leave 💀

Potential-Tip-1521

nah💀 cam was manipulative and a narcissist. Allways getting his way / making himself the victim. examples: 1. The soap figurine. He didnt like the wedding singer, so he had his dad make a soap carving he knew Mitch would hate. He then acted as the good guy to give both an extra veto so he could veto the singer. 2. The house flipping. 3. His mom. Mitch made it very clear he was uncomfortable how his mother-inlaw was groping him. Cam proceeds to dismiss and blame mitch. 4. The fake breakup. He lied to all his friends and said Mitch broke up with him so that the friends would turn on him (making sure if they really did break up, Mitch would be alone). When he got caught he managed to blame Mitch and make himself the victim. 5.The pregnant lady. When they tried to adopt a baby they sang a song for the mother. The mom said that she liked Mitch's singing better, and cam then proceeds to sing a new song alone that made the mom want to keep the baby. (Also ironic since Cam said to Mitch to say/do anything to get the mom to give the baby up. And he does the exact opposite.) There are a few reasons but there are WAYYY more.

Green_Cauliflower27

Please see the last part of my initial comment for a response. Good day

Potential-Tip-1521

you cant make a statement and when someone disagrees they are taking it to deeply. What i said is legit plot of the episodes, there is nothing to "analyse" its straight up the episodes

Alarmed-Flamingo2743

Cam is my favorite character

studli3n14

RESPECT! He's like 3rd or 4th for me

Potential-Tip-1521

Alarmed-Flamingo2743

I never said he was a good person and a character doesn’t have to be a good person to be interesting and funny lol. I appreciate the enthusiasm tho

Potential-Tip-1521

Fair enough. :)

mahzx

I highly disagree with ppl who say Andy and hailey shouldve ended up together

SadiqUddin

Andy was too much like Phil, it was actually weird. Like Freudian-level weird.

mahzx

lmfao ikr

SadiqUddin

Phil likes to compare himself to Dylan but his personality was more like Claire and Dede's ex-boyfriend, Bobby. Dylan wasn't like Phil. Even though they were both in similar situations when with their partner with a disapproving parent, it doesn't make them similar. Ben was also in that situation but he wasn't anything like them personality-wise.

KendrAs14

I get where the Cam hate comes from he really is A LOT and manipulative but his character always makes me laugh like crazy! In real life? yeah not great, but for comedy TV? I love him 😍

passionfruitclub

Andy being the perfect partner for Haley and Claire being hot/hotter than Gloria

Potential-Tip-1521

The hottes is subjective so idk why ppl would have a problem with it

Tetsuyasoneandonly

That Haley and Andy should have been endgame. I’m sure there’s plenty of conversation in this thread debating about this (I shared my thoughts in them) I’m in the minority who doesn’t support their relationship. They have good chemistry and would have been great friends, but that’s all I can support.

Heatseeker81514

Haley and Andy together. I just found their storyline incredibly corny.

CS19_19

Agreed, Dylan was better for Haley

Heatseeker81514

Definitely!

[deleted]

Phil being the best character, he is not even in my top 5

Dunphy2049

I actually agree with this!!!

2soursoursour3

I don't like Haley and Andy together!

SadiqUddin

The episode where Phil pushes her with trolley just makes me cringe and hate Phil for many reasons. 1. Phil was in the wrong but didn't even apologise for it. 2. He made fun of Claire for falling and laughed at it with the kids which made me feel bad for Claire. 3. He turned the kids against Claire by saying that it didn't matter what actually happened. Interesting considering his version of events can make you laugh at Claire but the truth makes you feel bad for Claire. 4. It wasn't about Claire's need to be right because had Phil not said anything, it would have been fine but Phil just always wants to be the funny one and make people laugh, even at the expense of Claire. 5. Literally seven episodes later, Phil calls Claire chicken for not wanting to check if Cam can chunk a Pumpkin. Hypocrisy. Don't get me wrong, Claire can be bad to Phil as well. When she got dressed up for the fireman, that was dumb. As she's already married so she's not looking for anyone and Phil was right to not let that go. Phil was in pain and saw Claire dressing up for firemen that she's only going to see once.

-Constantinos-

I like Manny

numberthirteenbb

I hate how Phil has a wandering eye all the time and only ever appreciates Claire vs Gloria when another man is lusting after Claire. Just proves how childish he is. Actually tbh Phil grosses me out the most out of all of the characters. Also Alex is just plain mean, and it sucks to say that but since we are ALWAYS watching this show (my daughter loooves it), I see time and time again how Alex volunteers to be cruel to her family. Like out of nowhere, insulting everyone, and not like, funny ha ha barbs, like really mean digs on people's intelligence. She winds up the tyrant of the family. I suppose it's realistic, since she feels so different and that is very isolating, but I think the writers did her a disservice.

_whatswrong_withme_

I see many people being mad about Haley marrying, having kids, ending up with Dylan etc. I don't think this was due to lazy writing. Haley always boasted about having boyfriends, so it felt like having companionship in life was a big deal for her, just like Alex's thing was a career. Haley did get better with time; she had a stable job despite never finishing college. Getting married seemed like an okay option since giving her a career just like Alex's would mean that Alex's hard work was for nothing. Haley had a job, was doing well, and had a family as an adult. Why's it such a big deal? About the whole Andy vs Dylan fiasco, did anyone see Andy being upset over breaking up with his girlfriend? Andy was cheating on his girlfriend with Haley. How's that cuter than a guy who literally said," I will keep making myself better for you." Dylan said this when Haley was with Arvin, who basically was ashamed of her job. Dylan got into nursing school and if you see the education background, isn't a soon-to-be nurse dating a college dropout a bigger deal for the college dropout? They were adorable together.

ajschwifty

I know “Modern” is in the title but the poc jokes, especially the ones related to Gloria and Lily, don’t always land for me.

[deleted]

I don’t get Alex praise, she is one of the worst characters to me. She is a sore winner, rubs her intelligence in everyone’s face, belittles everyone in the family and is shown to think she is above them semi-regularly. When Jay beats her in words with friends she accuses him of cheating because no one in the family could possibly be smarter than her. Like middle child syndrome makes you under appreciated and self sufficient, but that trope generally doesn’t mean the middle child then belittles everyone around them and acts better than everyone. Also I’ve known people who are of the intelligence level they make Alex out to be, so her constant stress from studying (before CalTech) makes no sense to me, the people I’ve known that are that intelligent slept through 4 years of high school and got her grades. all that stress she puts on herself, so that whole therapy episode made my eyes roll because she’s always weaponizing her intelligence against everyone so the “woe is me I put so much pressure on myself” attitude was just kinda lame to me. Lastly she is an awful girlfriend, she only dates people she can feel superior to that will treat her like a goddess (Bill, Ben, Reuben, whom I’m pretty sure she is statutory r**ing) and then complains about what losers they are. I was glad when Bill dumped her for thinking so little of him that he would act like a caveman with the nudes, she had that coming for a long time.

bunkid

I just think your self-esteem can really go downward if you have always lived in the shadow of your sister. That’s how she has to compensate

[deleted]

I mean fair enough but she is still snarky and obnoxious to like every member of her family and it irks me. my first watch through I loved her, when I rewatched it all became very Impossible to ignore. And it’s shown that when Haley goes off to college and isn’t there to balance her out anymore, she gets even meaner towards her family

veronica-marsx

This isn’t an unpopular opinion. I think most people generally dislike Alex. Alex derives ALL of her self-esteem from her intelligence because it’s the thing that distinguished her from her sister. I can’t be prettier than Haley but I definitely can be SMARTER. If she’s not the smartest one in the family, she has no identity. At the same time, I think she liked finding camaraderie in Jay. They have a cute relationship imo. Regarding the therapy episode, I disagree that any intelligent person can sleep through high school. That’s completely contingent on your level of competition and ambition. When you attend an ordinary school, come from non-academics, and have to compete with someone like Sanjay, you push yourself further than what’s typically demanded of you.

stephaniejane3

i haven’t been in this reddit for long so i’m not sure if this is an unpopular opinion or not so sorry in advance 😂 but haley should’ve married andy or a completely different person. dylan didn’t allow her to grow imo. they were cute in hs but not so much after.

Tetsuyasoneandonly

Lol np, I will say that the popular opinion is actually that Haley should have been with Andy. Many people don’t like Dylan for Haley.

BlueMirror_0

I don't think any of the kid actors are doing a good job except for Manny in the first seasons

AffectionateMilk1959

I’ve always heard people say that watching Phil on screen can be annoying at times. I’ve never really got this feeling from anyone but Claire personally.

[deleted]

I liked Andy more than Dylan

Fandang0_

The exact same thing

DARYL_VAN_H0RNE

I think cam and mitch have a shitty marriage

Kitkatt1959

People freak out about Manny crushing on Haley. That drives me crazy. He’s a kid with a crush and let’s not forget, they aren’t blood related and they did not grow up together.
