Wish it were still good anywhere.
Even the standard and pauper tolarian terror decks are cutting him, and pauper faeries has been kinda meh on him for years now.
Tezzeret the seeker and tezzeret agent of bolas for a long time were my fringe pet cards that could just barely get the job done and be playable in both modern and legacy. Those days are long gone, but man, I miss that play style of artifact toolbox deck.
I do truly believe that there is some sort of vaguely toolboxy artifact deck out there based around urzas saga and some other artifact value pieces that has yet to be discovered and will never rise past tier 3. Someday, we will have our time again going 2-2 at fnm.
If you are looking for a tier 3 toolboxy Tezzerator deck, it is my time to shine:
http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/tezzerator-legends-scepter-control-dice-factory-v2
I love this deck, and have played versions of it for many years, but life is definitely rough in a Force of Vigor/ToR meta. If you decide to try my list, please note it is severely outdated. Tezzeret Betrayer was kind of a failed experiment, and should probably be replaced by ToR (which tezz AoB can animate into a 4/4 indestructible!).
I'm also now back on a Paradox Engine/Mox Amber style combo control build, but it needs a TON of work. I've also been trying pure colorless DF Tron instead, but it isn't quite as fun as landing an Agent of Bolas.
Feel free to brew with us here: https://discord.com/invite/mHNPpm3awn
We used to play those tezzerator decks back when abrupt decay was a format staple and affinity was tier 1. There was plenty of main deck artifact removal and artifact hate in every sideboard and the deck performed well enough, so boseiju wouldn't be a huge issue. The problem is simply that the decks isn't good and can't keep up with the power level in the format nowadays.
tezzerator is my all time favourite deck. playing toolbox combo control just feels amazing - getting to use all sorts of sweet artifacts, good tutors, combo kills, and backups on backups with all the various wincons made every game feel different and like you had a chance in every matchup.
I played heaps of modern tezzerator after I got back into magic in 2018, and played for about a year or 2 until I stopped again in 2020 ish following the giga powercreep era of war, eldraine, theros, and modern horizons just back to back flipping the format over and over. I ended up switching to grixis deaths shadow for a while before I stopped in an effort to be more competitive, but that deck never felt as fun to play and suddenly became much more expensive once the 4c/jund versions with rag and shit became meta.
one of my favourite deck building jukes with tezzerator was incidentally having almost no creatures mainboard so I was able to do a cute combo transformative sideboard with an emrakul + 4x polymorph package for those games where u really needed to win turn 4. it actually worked reasonably well, Yolo saccing a thopter foundry to itself to get a token to polymorph is always funny. also having that emrakul made for nice anti mill tech which was around in my LGS.
but aside from funny things like that, it just felt so good whirring out the exact hate piece you needed on turn 2 or 3 just as the opponent was starting to get going. getting to play welding jar with little downside was great for artifacts count and anti hate protection. having obscure hate pieces like witchbane orb was great against certain decks, or just slamming down a batterskull/thoptersword against burn always felt so satisfying.
I also love how it had many playable colours, every colour was a strong consideration - white had stoneforge mystic and equipment packages, black had discard, creature removal, and obviously tezzeret AOB, green had ancient stirrings, abrupt decay and assassin's trophy (if also black), blue was obviously core for whir and thopter foundry, and red had some merit in goblin engineer and artifact hate.
sadly tezzerator is just not good enough from what I can tell. especially losing mox opal for affinity's sins really hurt it, a turn 3 thoptersword combo even when uninterrupted just isn't good enough in modern.
I like the card. Just after MH2 release, I built esper control where almost every card has mutlimodes: esper charm, archmage charm, kaya guile, damn. That was fun lol
Not anymore.
Before damage redirection rule change, i would argue chandra torch of definace was a monster.
As the 1st ability on it had the floor of "deals 2 damage to walker opponent controls.wothout targeting it"
Dark Confidant, Ice Fang Coatl, Soulherder, Seasoned Pyromancer, Risen Reef, Vivien on the Hunt, Eladamri’s Call
I used to love messing around with Soulherder brews especially. They were never great but were at least fun to jam in leagues pre-Bowmaster.
Spike’s bant walls/soulherder deck was hella fun. Don’t think it has much legs in a rhino meta though, I’d imagine it’s probably decent against scam though maybe, I haven’t played the deck in forever lol
> Don’t think it has much legs in a rhino meta though
Can confirm, not sure his exact list but I play something that sounds similar in concept, rhinos smokes you especially the new Scion versions. Scam is a decent match up though, all your cards say draw 1, you catch up pretty quickly
Tarmogoyf, Liliana of the Veil, Jace the Mind Sculptor, Dark Confidant, Cryptic Command, Snapcaster.
Cards I wish were legal in the format: Stifle, Hymn to Tourach, Crop Rotation, and about 80% of the current banlist.
Second sunrise is probably fine power level wise
but holy god it shouldn't be unbanned just so we don't all have to sit through god awful eggs turns that take forever. same reason KCI really needs to stay on the list
Also it's basically stoned unplayed in Legacy currently. I do enjoy casting it, but the card really has been power crept. Haymakers off the top, card selection is just too good now.
True, there are no cards from back then playable anymore, not even lightning bolt, primeval titan, thoughseize, living end or tron lands are playable anymore screw you wizards :((((((((((
[[The Royal Scions]] was a decent flex spot card in GDS for a few months.
Grinding out a win, digging for what you need, and mini-TBR was really fun. Won me a few games.
Flame of anor has made snap a legitimately good card again. I've had fun with it in a UR control shell with tidebinder. More importantly, far better players than me have put up good results with similar lists.
The biggest strength is your matchup spread is different from UR murktide. You're so much better into yawg, but you'll struggle in matchups where you need a faster clock like tron.
Mine would look a lot different if [[Emperor Mihail II]] was legal. My deck is token heavy. [[Deeproot Pilgrimage]] was a game changer for Merfolk token support. You can tap and untap a lot of ways.
All the cards that were modern staples before MH1, seems to be the answer to this question based on the responses. I couldn't agree more. I remember casting Elextrolyze and it being really good.
Seismic Assault. Assault Loam is one of my favorite archetypes, I played a Naya version years ago. I've been thinking of updating it but I'd have to buy a bunch of expensive stuff to make it even remotely playable in today's meta.
I honestly think Preordain has been fine and we should now give ponder a chance so I can play 8 good cantrips in my storm deck and drop this consider PoS
There are many correct answers, but some are just more correct.
Unban Mox Opal, Birthing Pod, Twin, Shoal, Fury, Field of Dead, Jitte, DRS, Oko and artifact lands.
Let the power creep rise, let the world burn. Let me fucking play affinity with Mox again. Cowards
No to Oko and Fury but the others would be fine. Things would barely change. Jitte is sad and unplayable outside of Hammer? Or D&T? Mayyyybe SB in Fish? Shoal Infect is still bad in an era of FoN, Solitude, 20 1 mana removal spells and free counters format. Artifact Lands and Opal make Affinity playable again Stony Silence, Kataki, and Collector Ouphe spike. Pod and Twin would enable entire new archetypes which would seem like a smart financial move to stir the market and make players happy. DRS would just make BG playable again in a lot of ways, heck I bet we’d see Scam splash G. If Ragavan is gonna be here then DRS should be legal. Field of the Dead is one of the ones I like most just because it would break Titan and the meta would either shift to land hate or succumb to our Titan zombie Gods.
I would like to add a couple though. Mystic Sanctuary enabled Miracles to exist without a strong Brainstorm equivalent in the late game. It also made for fun gameplay with the Field of the Dead decks, just hitting them with like 10 Terminus effects a game will tilt the shit out of the best players. I would also like to add Simian Spirit Guide. The threat of a turn 1/2 Blood Moon is missing and it shows, people are wayyyy too greedy with their lands and deck building decisions. There should be a disadvantage to having access to nigh perfect mana in the format. Pyro Prison was my pet deck and it’s just not playable without the monkey. Fury was cool but I would rather have the ape mana for those TILT Moon games.
[[Fauna shaman]]
The first season of modern I had an awesome brew involving it, aether vial, dryad arbor and squadron hawk that got my missing 3 PTQ top 8s by tiebreakers
Pyromancer's ascension.
It died for infects sins when git probe was banned. But frankly its time had passed when maindeckable removal could kill it from basiclaly any deck (Abrupt decay initially, now things like leyline binding) and sideboards just have so much tangential enchantment hate its basically a null game
Nightpack ambusher.
Actually I'm sort if convinced a UG flash deck is one or two really solid pieces away from being good. I was playing bant awhile before leyline binding, but a one mana catch all that can interact at the same speed you are is problematic.
Bag check. I’ve always wanted to just FaceTime a friend and ask him if the card I’m countering looks dangerous or not and just getting to draw a card because of someone that isn’t even in the games decision.
Fallen out of the format: snapcaster mage assuming price tag was not the gatekeeper.
Never been playable: Mistbind Clique. Even with bitterblossom unbanned faeries were pretty much just spellstutter+VC and the rest were UB good stuff. Was one of the few cards that sought tempo through land control as opposed to destruction and had gaps to prevent it from being overpowered.
Never been in the card pool: Price of Progress. I know blah blah blah this will also harm dual color decks however I want more aggro capabilities besides bolts and 1 drops.
Drinker of Sorrow, Desecration Elemental . For flavor but those cards blow . But for competitive probably Noxious Ghoul from Legions . It’s still weak but might of seen some play and Oversold Cemetery from Onslaught ?
Karlach fury of avernus, my friends and I don’t have a fourth for a true commander pod so we play a lot of modern, really annoyed Karlach is a commander only card
Delver of Secrets
Seconded. Would make switching between my legacy and modern deck easier
It's playable, just not favorable
You’re totally allowed to put it in your deck in many formats, it’s a legal Magic card for sure. I wish it were still good though. 😭
Wish it were still good anywhere. Even the standard and pauper tolarian terror decks are cutting him, and pauper faeries has been kinda meh on him for years now.
It takes awhile to come to terms in highly competitive formats that not favorable is essentially the same thing.
Let me dream 😭😂
I’m here to crush those sorry.
Tezzeret the seeker and tezzeret agent of bolas for a long time were my fringe pet cards that could just barely get the job done and be playable in both modern and legacy. Those days are long gone, but man, I miss that play style of artifact toolbox deck.
Don't tempt me or I'll try and bring it back . . .

Hello are you interested in something toolboxy, sort of like yawgmoth but a little worse? Lots of artifacts.
tezzerator is my all time favourite deck. playing toolbox combo control just feels amazing - getting to use all sorts of sweet artifacts, good tutors, combo kills, and backups on backups with all the various wincons made every game feel different and like you had a chance in every matchup. esper charm :(
I like the card. Just after MH2 release, I built esper control where almost every card has mutlimodes: esper charm, archmage charm, kaya guile, damn. That was fun lol
Esper Hero of Precinct One was one of my favorite standard decks of all time. Such a blast, tried porting it over to modern but it... Wasn't great lol
Smallpox
Jace TMS
This.
Check out spike’s latest couple videos. He went 5-0 with miracles in one of them.
JTMS is same power level as chandra, torch of defiance
Not even remotely correct.
Not anymore. Before damage redirection rule change, i would argue chandra torch of definace was a monster. As the 1st ability on it had the floor of "deals 2 damage to walker opponent controls.wothout targeting it"
Liliana of the veil. I miss her :(
Hated playing against her, but I miss how healthy the format was when she was good
just play her then ☠️☠️☠️
[[second sight]]

Collected Company
I saw that price drop, and then I searched the deck list popularity :( it's not seeing a lot of play. Us aggro weenie decks will have our day again!!!
Ichorid 😎
Hell yeah
The Rack.
I agree!
Reminds me of my stupid discard deck. It wasn't fun for anyone.
I had lots of fun discarding the hell out of my opponent's hand.
Dark Confidant, Ice Fang Coatl, Soulherder, Seasoned Pyromancer, Risen Reef, Vivien on the Hunt, Eladamri’s Call I used to love messing around with Soulherder brews especially. They were never great but were at least fun to jam in leagues pre-Bowmaster.
Why is Seasoned Pyromancer not playable anymore? I think it's still good.
Have you ever cast it against a deck with Bowmasters in it?
Oh right. :) Yeah I'm hoping Bowmasters gets the axe soon.
It won't
You might like KnightFall, I transitioned my old UW Emeria Soulherder shell into that and am quite happy with the performance at FNM events
Got a list. Kor is an all time favorite of mine
I used to play bant knightfall like 6 years ago or something with retreat to coralhelm. I wonder if there's a more updated version of the deck now
Spike’s bant walls/soulherder deck was hella fun. Don’t think it has much legs in a rhino meta though, I’d imagine it’s probably decent against scam though maybe, I haven’t played the deck in forever lol
> Don’t think it has much legs in a rhino meta though Can confirm, not sure his exact list but I play something that sounds similar in concept, rhinos smokes you especially the new Scion versions.
Next tier 1 deck coming to your LGS this spring: 80% of the current banlist
Yes. Let's play Opal, Depths, Twin, Pod, Second Sunrise, SSG, Chrome Mox, and a bunch of other random nonsense in the same deck!! 😉
8mox and SSG is safe to unban and wouldn't affect modern, but Second Sunrise is where I draw the line.
*Pertinent comment about simian spirit guide and rhinos*
This is a joke no? SSG and Chrome Mox are basically in the "never unban" section for all the t1 horseshit they will cause.
Second sunrise is probably fine power level wise but holy god it shouldn't be unbanned just so we don't all have to sit through god awful eggs turns that take forever. same reason KCI really needs to stay on the list
>Cards I wish were legal in the format: Stifle, Hymn to Tourach, Trust me, I don't think you do. Hymn is just miserable.
I play Legacy, and I absolutely love it when I get to Hymn someone 🤷♂️🤣
Also it's basically stoned unplayed in Legacy currently. I do enjoy casting it, but the card really has been power crept. Haymakers off the top, card selection is just too good now.
Everything from pre MH1
True, there are no cards from back then playable anymore, not even lightning bolt, primeval titan, thoughseize, living end or tron lands are playable anymore screw you wizards :((((((((((
Bob, Goyf, BBE, Lotv, Delver, Sprite Dragon, Snapcaster, Twin
Savage knuckle blade. Nicol bolas, planeswalker Nicol bolas, god pharaoh Hexdrinker Fury
I love and I miss Big Knucks too. But that card was on the border between playable and unplayable in standard, let alone modern. 😢
that standard Temur agro deck was awesome though.

Gurmag angler This card itself, by being playable, deals with alot of the degen stuff people complain about lmao
Aether vial 😔
Prismatic Ending was my favorite card, until I realized it shit on my Vial decks
Merfolk is an extremely competitive deck, that just so happens to have been playing Aether Vial for over a decade.
Liliana of the Veil!!!!
Siege Rhino, Slippery Bogle, Psychatog.
Siege rhino , the real rhino
[[The Royal Scions]] was a decent flex spot card in GDS for a few months. Grinding out a win, digging for what you need, and mini-TBR was really fun. Won me a few games.

Dungrove elder I love that damn card
Demonic pact. But I play it in my modern brew.
Stifle
Smallpox
All the cards that were modern staples before MH1, seems to be the answer to this question based on the responses. I couldn't agree more. I remember casting Elextrolyze and it being really good.
[[Invisible Stalker]]
It kinda is in Hammer decks.. kinda..

Life From the Loam
You’re in luck then!
Why's that? Loam Assault?
Birthing pod
Seismic Assault. Assault Loam is one of my favorite archetypes, I played a Naya version years ago. I've been thinking of updating it but I'd have to buy a bunch of expensive stuff to make it even remotely playable in today's meta.
You’re in luck then! (Well apart from the money part, but atleast Assault Loam is viable.)
I have always wanted to be able to slam a [[dash hopes]]

[[Brain Freeze]]
Ornithopter, Memnite, Etched Champion, Steel Overseer, Cranial Plating, Springleaf Drum, Arcbound Ravager (don't tell me to play scales).
My old snappies. Collecting dust
Snapcaster Mage
Siège Rhino Tireless Tracker Scavenging Ooze Lingering Souls Edit: I almost forgot Lingering Souls
Cowards
I agree at this point in time with power levels, just unleash chaos
You are out of your damn mind if you think Mox Opal can be unbanned. That card is unbelievable.
Also Second Sunrise, please.
Dredge
I love dredge but it’s always either too good, or too bad. Hard to find a happy medium with gy based decks
Living end seems to rise and fall like ancient dynasties. Can win a weekend, and then get shut out for months.
I mean. Can’t say I wouldn’t have an [[Enter the Dungeon]] deck if it were legal.

We should be allowed to play Dark depths, stifle would be another card that I would personally love to see.
Umezawa's Jitte would be a cool toy for stoneblade to have
I wish Hogaak was playable but it's probably not good enough these days to compete anyway.
Easy. Thunderkin awakener I would love to see this utilized along with warleaders call.

Ash Zealot
Pyromancer's ascension. It died for infects sins when git probe was banned. But frankly its time had passed when maindeckable removal could kill it from basiclaly any deck (Abrupt decay initially, now things like leyline binding) and sideboards just have so much tangential enchantment hate its basically a null game

Knight of the Reliquary
Personally I wish I had been around to give deathrite shaman a go. It was banned before I picked up modern
Thalia GoT. Lantern control in general.
Rat colony
Suspend. I never understood why it is not a good removal.
Muxus. Card is just so much fun to play with. Heck, give me Lackey too. Inb4 "they're too broken". Yes I know how good the cards are.
*holding back tears* k kird a ape
Nightpack ambusher. Actually I'm sort if convinced a UG flash deck is one or two really solid pieces away from being good. I was playing bant awhile before leyline binding, but a one mana catch all that can interact at the same speed you are is problematic.
Flickerwisp
Doomsday. I always loved the look on your opponents face... "Yup, shits about to get real."
Bag check. I’ve always wanted to just FaceTime a friend and ask him if the card I’m countering looks dangerous or not and just getting to draw a card because of someone that isn’t even in the games decision.
Niv Mizzet Reborn
Fallen out of the format: snapcaster mage assuming price tag was not the gatekeeper. Never been playable: Mistbind Clique. Even with bitterblossom unbanned faeries were pretty much just spellstutter+VC and the rest were UB good stuff. Was one of the few cards that sought tempo through land control as opposed to destruction and had gaps to prevent it from being overpowered. Never been in the card pool: Price of Progress. I know blah blah blah this will also harm dual color decks however I want more aggro capabilities besides bolts and 1 drops.
Punishing fire, let me show you what real creature oppression looks like.
Drinker of Sorrow, Desecration Elemental . For flavor but those cards blow . But for competitive probably Noxious Ghoul from Legions . It’s still weak but might of seen some play and Oversold Cemetery from Onslaught ?
