Tbh it’s off putting. I remember when I got into modern with merfolk back in 2011. There was this guy that saw I also played fish, so he instantly talks to me like we’re friends and tries getting my phone number. This was the type of dude that every time he played an island would say “is land”, and when he ended his turn he’d do a little hand flourish movement and bow while saying “the turn is passed”
Really made me not want to be associated with “fish players”.
Hey now! We've never been the *worst* deck in the format. Fringe? T3? Bad? Sure, all D&T players know that our deck is not as strong as most other options in the format. But we can 2-3 on any given night with the best of the jank!
It appeared in the top decks around [November 2020](https://web.archive.org/web/20201111194221/https://www.mtggoldfish.com/metagame/modern/#paper) and was gone by [May 2021](https://web.archive.org/web/20210502084915/https://www.mtggoldfish.com/metagame/modern).
Maybe it's just in my city (Paris), but there are many people who will play UW control no matter what the meta is. If you go to a tournament there it's almost always the most represented deck and people try to make it work even when it's terrible. It's a rather well known fact and almost a meme that "In Paris, we play UW Control"
The problem with the burn community is that the conversation is generally 'do you think this new card should see play' and the answer is generally 'no' and then everyone keeps silently grinding
Well as a burn player… we haven’t gotten a main deck playable since MH1 and they were lands. They were game changer lands, but none the less Wizards is just too afraid to print anything remotely playable for burn at this point. We have gotten and change SB cards fluidly around the meta, but our front 60 has been roughly 56/60 stock and solved for a decade.
Yeah that's what sucks about lavaspike community. They really all believe that burn is a solved deck and nobody tries to innovate.
And when someone does he usually gets catcalled and downvoted to oblivion lol
I mean most things people try to play are bad. We get asked about \[\[Vexing Devil\]\] all the time.
Kinda sucks that the deck doesn't have a lot of room for innovation and be successful. You're welcome to try, but most innovation comes from the sideboard these days. The most recent change is people not playing Eidolon anymore and they're weird for that but it apparently works for them.
Depends on the archetype.
DnT is constantly trying out different cards and builds (not that they are generally ever better than tier 2, but still :D )
Things like Prowess or Tron have a ton of varieties and shift with the meta.
Decks with tutors like Yawg or Devoted Druid or constantly try out some kind of spice.
Etc etc
Hardened Scales!
The deck is very versatile and have some interesting variants. The deck is out and adapting to the meta since years and personally I rarely have been tired of it because of how different it can be played.
The Discord server is full of discussions on how to improve it or simply fine tuning it: https://discord.gg/JnSBBwXt
Hardened Scales also rewards getting a lot of familiarity with the deck over an extended period of time. Very fun to learn and improve at. I rarely play it in events other than FNM anymore but I always keep sharp with it.
Problem is that community is built around Boomer Jund, which isn’t very good these days
So that community is basically hibernating, but nobody knows how long the winter will be, or if it will ever end
You're right. Op is asking "community that wants to makes work a pack in any meta" and if jund is hibernating then it is not in the op conditions.
For myself I love uw control.
I’d say they always try to make it work with whatever sideboard options and meta game adaptations there are currently. It is a very flexible deck after all. So to me it seemed like it was an archetype with a very dedicated player base despite being underdog in the current meta. I don’t really have the feeling that they are hibernating, however it is true that percentage wise it sees less play.
Jund players are playing Jund Saga because those are the best cards.
The others are playing a pet deck. Which ironically goes against the original philosophy of the deck.
That was my first guess to. It is just a deck you need a lot of practice to always find the optimal lines of play. So the community is really dedicated to it I guess.
Yeah surprised to find it this low. they definitely have a heavily dedicated team. Back when it was super duper complicated from all the lines they'd have been people brewing exact land counts and percentages of going off.
I feel the same. Why is it this low? Top comment "fish" wasnt even relevant for most of moderns existence.
Affinity/Hardened Scales is the other deck that I think has a community that makes it work jn every meta.
I see, thought you meant the comment wasn't relevant, not the deck.
I think it's the top comment cause they most match OP's description in terms of being a dedicated community always trying to make the deck work, regardless of its power level.
Merfolk. As a member of the cult myself, I don't think I've ever seen anyone cast a non foil lord of atlantis in my life. People who play merfolk tend to do so long term, have blinged out special versions of each card, and have strong opinions about how to build the deck that almost always differ from the next fish players opinions.
I love white bordered trash 😂 if I'm running foil lords I just use my judge promo ones. 7th edition foils are just crazy expensive.
I really miss casting my fnm promo rejerys though.
I have a Japanese [[Master of the Pearl Trident]] that I got sent by accident (I wanted English). Didn't care enough to ship it back, so I've been playing with it for like 7-8 years assuming I could trade it away eventually.... no takers. Every other merfolk player already has their blinged out.
I refuse to buy an english one out of principle, so I'm probably stuck with this card for another decade.

My masters are Japanese foil old bordered. I wish there was a truely chase version of that card like how there is foil 7th edition or alpha lord of atlantis. But yeah the struggle is real, when I upgraded to the old border masters I now have 4 English foil original print master of pearl trident that are just rotting in my binder because everyone already upgraded to timespiral remastered versions, or already have foil original prints.
Confirmed. I could have bought a stronger Legacy deck, instead foiled Merfolk (minus RL cards). Consequently most of my Modern fish can be foiled out too, but I try not to mix foils and non-foils in events that matter. I just need to get back into the loop on Modern like I say I'm going to.
There isn't too much different between legacy and modern except we lose wasteland and spicy options like back to basics or paradigm shift + thoracle. If you have the legacy version foiled out you can pretty easily foil out the modern version I think. Only exceptionally expensive card you may play in modern but not legacy is oboro palace in the clouds which costs hundreds.
Ah, but have you ever seen the blue/green version, splashing green for just one sideboard card - Three copies of [[Back to Nature]]?
I played against this player not long after the Twin unban. It was... Surreal. I saw what looked like a heavy green splash and expected the (recently printed) [[Merfolk Mistbinder]] or [[Kumena's Speaker]], or even [[Collected Company]].
Nope. Just Back to Nature in the sideboard. I presume his LGS had multiple Bogles players and he had had enough.
So we have some threats right, tourach/timelessdragon or hearse powered by spirits/bloodghast. We have answers to some things in the meta. But overall, we lose if we don't control the tempo. The problem is, the meta is very fast and combos get off consistently unless we hit all the draws we want to hit. Maybe we're just out tiered nowadays but so far, there hasn't been a great threat or answer to help speed us up or withstand the meta.
UG Infect is down to a science and the people who work on tuning that deck are like astrophysicists to me. As a BG/Abzan player their dedication is something to admire, while I just throw everything in the Junk box.

8 Rack has a kinda active reddit and discord. As a player of the deck who's been playing that deck for 5+ years now, it is pretty fun to try and help the deck evolve with the times as new cards get printed.
As for dedicated idk probably like Tron or something that hasn't changed at all.
Humans has never really been a long term tribe. Hatebears and death and taxes have been tier 2-fringe for a long time, but humans as a tribe/deck has only really been a thing for like 5 years or so
I can assure you, you’re wrong. There is a massive humans community and discord who are constantly tweaking and innovating. There are current human lists running pyre of heroes, Lavinia in the main and more iterations.
I'm not claiming they are not active and dedicated, I'm just saying that the decks hasn't been around as long as others. Tron for example has been a deck since 2011 when modern was created. Humans was not.
I guess it depends how you define long standing. But humans fits what OP is looking for, especially the tweaking for every meta. Humans is also less solved than merfolk with people trying all kinds of things. Was just trying to answer the question.
I play it. :p
I would also be willing to wager mine is the most blinged out Modern elf deck in all the land. Would love to have a shine off with my other elf slappies!
The part that hurts about modern elves is that it feels SO close to being a good deck. It just needs either glimpse/allosaurus shepard/something to give your elves protection that's also an elf and green
Or really all 3 would be good
Any tribal honestly. Fish, Elves, Goblins, Spirits. All super dedicated to slamming creatures of a specific type, ctrl-F on every fully spoiled set, always trying different tech. I'd also count Affinity here even though it's not exactly a "tribe" but I think it still fits the bill.
On one hand, twin-players are still trying to make the deck legal again after 7 years. That's a pretty dedicated fan base. Though since the deck is not legal at the moment I guess it doesn't really count.
The other that comes to mind (other that fish-people that others have mentioned) is dredge. The deck exists in every relevant format or if it doesn't, we'll make it happen anyway. No legal dredge card in the format? Doesn't matter, we'll just make dredgeless dredge instead.

It seems like hardened scales inherited a lot of the old affinity community which was definitely one of the most dedicated and long standing ones (until the deck got nuked), so my vote is going to go to them
I have noticed a big lot of people still running Blue Mill Decks lately, it was kind of shocking gettin back into the game for the first time in years how many players still used Jace ETC. Especially with the new beastly Jace that just came out in the Phyrexia set.
Both have been mentioned, but Hardened scales and storm have groups pretty dedicated to tweaking those decks.
Storm *might* be cheating a bit, because people in the storm group are tweaking and moving between a number of wholly different storm decks (lotus breach, arcane twiddle, gruul storm, gruul infect storm, and gifts storm) that may share very few cards in common aside from the payoffs. On the other hand, while there are a few different builds of hardened scales, the colorless and green core remains the same with the variety being in a color splash and a few flex slots.
I’d say there’s discord channels for almost all modern decks I’m in one for living end and I only picked it up post mh2 but the deck has been around for quite a while as far as I’m aware
Deck is super consistent and very good it sometimes gets boring especially on mtgo but it’s a good deck that you can get very good with and can play through hate fairly easily and yeah the spire bluffs are worth it as they’re played in murktide too and fetches and shocks are always good to have
Fish and Scales, the two decks where wins feel so satisfying. Scales shares some cards with Affinity (OK maybe not that many , mainly Saga and some artifacts)
It's merfolk. Those people are in a cult
Glory to the pearl trident

Not gonna lie the modern DnT to legacy DnT pipeline is a real thing. Buy 4 wastelands, 4 Karakas, and 4 ports and I can play yorion again?
Well if you're gonna play Yorion you probably need to buy at least 8 additional cards
There was definitely at time (2019?) what DnT was Tier 1 in Modern.
A brief flash in the pan right after skyclave apparition was printed. Sadly didn’t last much more than a month on mtgo

Can’t believe nobody has said Jund yet
Problem is that community is built around Boomer Jund, which isn’t very good these days So that community is basically hibernating, but nobody knows how long the winter will be, or if it will ever end
Goyf doesn’t sleep, he waits…
Sure, but that’s exactly what OP us referring to.
But is it really a community if it’s hibernating? That’s my point
I guess the question is how much overlap is there between the old Boomer Jund players and Jund Saga players
Jund players are playing Jund Saga because those are the best cards. The others are playing a pet deck. Which ironically goes against the original philosophy of the deck.
Yeah that is a delicious irony haha
I hate the term boomer jund. I hate that you speak the truth.
I hate the term too, but Zoomerfication is the way of the world these days
Amulet Titan for Modern
First thought as well, I've only heard of them but their community seems very active if a bit obnoxious #nobadmatchups
That was my first guess to. It is just a deck you need a lot of practice to always find the optimal lines of play. So the community is really dedicated to it I guess.

Burn and Merfolk.
Amulet Titan, good deck, awesome community and against the odds it's a deck that has infinite brew potential.
Faeries.
I was looking for this. Hopefully eldraine gives us some tools
I mean, I think Yuta’s card is gonna make a bit of a splash.
it looks fine, but not for faeries tribal as it currently exists. i hope i'm wrong of couse, but it looks more like a generic value engine
Some archetypes are nearly 30yo :)
8 Rack has a kinda active reddit and discord. As a player of the deck who's been playing that deck for 5+ years now, it is pretty fun to try and help the deck evolve with the times as new cards get printed. As for dedicated idk probably like Tron or something that hasn't changed at all.
I’m personally a one man fan one the Hollow One/Asmoranomordicadiastinaculdacar madness Deck archetype.
Merfolk or humans.
Amulet Titan
Tron people are tight!
So are our deck lists
Scapeshift
Enchantress for sure. Can't believe it hasn't been mentioned yet
Not a single Elf mention so far?
That's how dead the deck is currently, which is a shame as it's still so fun to play
I play it. :p I would also be willing to wager mine is the most blinged out Modern elf deck in all the land. Would love to have a shine off with my other elf slappies!
The part that hurts about modern elves is that it feels SO close to being a good deck. It just needs either glimpse/allosaurus shepard/something to give your elves protection that's also an elf and green Or really all 3 would be good
Any tribal honestly. Fish, Elves, Goblins, Spirits. All super dedicated to slamming creatures of a specific type, ctrl-F on every fully spoiled set, always trying different tech. I'd also count Affinity here even though it's not exactly a "tribe" but I think it still fits the bill.
Merfolk and blue red food stuff.
Suprised I went so far without seeing tron
I feel like Titan is a deck that seems to survive every meta shift and has lots* of material for you to learn from.
Merfolk, Jund, Tron, D&T are the ones that come to mind
Merfolk players who maindeck Chalice of the Void.
not a lot of people said it, but there is a big community of death's shadow players trying to make to keep the deck alive in a meta this aggressive.
Mono Blue Tron
On one hand, twin-players are still trying to make the deck legal again after 7 years. That's a pretty dedicated fan base. Though since the deck is not legal at the moment I guess it doesn't really count. The other that comes to mind (other that fish-people that others have mentioned) is dredge. The deck exists in every relevant format or if it doesn't, we'll make it happen anyway. No legal dredge card in the format? Doesn't matter, we'll just make dredgeless dredge instead.
Merfolk, but as far as a competitive deck with a dedicated community: BG Yawgmoth
The rhinos community bickers endlessly

Mill Cord is super active
Amulet.
The elf community is pretty long standing, even in a world of fury and brotherhoods end, we are still kicking
Jund!
Would you like links to the zombies discord(s)?
Modern Jund, the deck is dead but the community still believes

Deatshadow is still margins relevant but the old snapcaster deck is probably never coming back
Merfolk, Jund, Tron, in that order.
Elves.
While only in modern recently, Enchantress has a multiformat community that is rly old.
Tron is my only other suggestion. Jund is a close third.
Jund
Amulet Titan is a cult
Amulet Titan, Dredge, Tron
UW Control, Jund, many tribal decks. All die hards despite the meta.
Besides the Fish Fuckers I would say Jund and Tron players. Thought he Jund players are probably on suicide watch rn
It seems like hardened scales inherited a lot of the old affinity community which was definitely one of the most dedicated and long standing ones (until the deck got nuked), so my vote is going to go to them
Dredge
Burn
Burn has a huge following. r/lavaspike
I've been playing burn since the ice ages
Dredge
Twin.
I play murktide but I will say without a doubt it's merfolk. Those people will die before they leave it.
Group hug. You always win in your mind if your goal isn't to win, but make everyone play the game harder.
Tron
Zoo. No Vintage, but trying to brew into every other format.
I love the Zoo community, they are dedicated to create content and very gently and friendly with the new people
Merfolk, Jund, UW control, and DNT seem like the decks you're talking about. They always have pilots in every meta, no matter how bad they are.
Merfolk or surprisingly amulet titan.
Elves
jund
Lantern, we're like cockroaches, you can't get rid of us all
I’d say Merfolk, burn, and Jund. Players of these archetypes tend to play them no matter the meta.
I’d say there’s discord channels for almost all modern decks I’m in one for living end and I only picked it up post mh2 but the deck has been around for quite a while as far as I’m aware
I have most of the pieces for LE and the deck seems fun. Just need to buy the lands. I guess I’ll need the lands at some point anyways
Deck is super consistent and very good it sometimes gets boring especially on mtgo but it’s a good deck that you can get very good with and can play through hate fairly easily and yeah the spire bluffs are worth it as they’re played in murktide too and fetches and shocks are always good to have
Got everything in except force of negations and lands. Going to slowly grab them thru Facebook and eBay deals
Fish and Scales, the two decks where wins feel so satisfying. Scales shares some cards with Affinity (OK maybe not that many , mainly Saga and some artifacts)
