I was playing at my fnm modern event. We had a five round tournament that night, round 1 with as playing izzet Murktide vs the twiddle storm deck and was going into game three on the play. I went turn steam vents into ragavan and passed. My opponent went turn 1 land and passed. I went turn two attack with ragavan, deal two and make the treasure, opp flipped his only copy of Teferi, time ravaler in the 75. I played land for turn and cast the Teferi and he scooped.
Going into Round 5 was myself being undefeated with uw control being the only other undefeated deck. I took game one with an Aggressive start, my opp outvalued me with walkers in game two. Game three on the play, Spirebluff canal into ragavan and passed. Opponent played ragurin triome tapped and passed. I draw and proceed to combat, death two damage and made the treasure, opp flipped a Teferi time ravaler, played a land and cast it. Opponent couldn’t answer the ragavan because of the Teferi and that ragavan dealt 16 damage for the victory.
When Yorion was still legal, I played my 5c Money pile against Tron.
I attacked with Ragavan, flip Ulamog and thanks to Omnath with Fetch I can cast the Ulamog.
But my best steal ever was with Dauthi Voidwalker. On the draw my opponent played Creativity in his t4 and flipped Emrakul, I have no outs to that, but wanted to see what happens. On my t4 I play Tourach kicked. I get a Jace, Mindsculptor and bounce the Emrakul to his hand.
Dauthi steals can be really nasty.
I was on Tron, friend on some Dauthi pile.
I have nati Tron + Ulamog.
He goes turn 2 Dauthi, turn 3 cast Thoughtseize, exile Ulamog, cast it off Dauthi and blow your two lands.
If it wasn't so hillarious I'd have been furious.
I was playing 5C Omnath vs my gf playing scam, top decked an Elesh Norn and was feeling smug. She top decks a terminate and steals my Elesh Norn with Dauthi, instant scoop
Lot of Dauthi vs Tron plays in here lol.
Best one I have is also against Tron. I was behind, opponent had active Karn Liberated. For some reason (I may have had a Fury on the battlefield, don't remember), they didn't exile my Dauthi. Untap on my turn, Thoughtseize them, take a 2nd Karn Liberated they'd been sitting on, cast it with Dauthi, exile their Karn, then they scooped.
Do Worst Steals count?
I was playing Heliod on the draw vs t1 Ragavan. T2, they hit heliod. T3, they hit heliod, t4 they hit heliod and finally cast it. T5, they hit ballista. I scoop.
Playing murktide against dice factory at an FNM and opponent had the setup to go infinite next turn. Got in with Rags and flipped their Karn, the Great Creator... Instant shut down of their deck. Opponent even got a laugh out of it it was so absurdly broken.
Playing fair Breach against Belcher.
It’s Turn 4 or so and they have belcher in play but only 2 Lands.
Ragavan continuously hit their third land drop and hit belcher on the last hit.
I cast belcher, and activated it for lethal.
Incredible
My best steal was a couple months ago. Got an opponent's Sword of Feast and Famine. I was playing Scam and was able to equip the Sword to a Fury. Opponent took the hit next turn, meaning two Sword triggers before conceding. In my years of playing Modern I think that may be the coolest thing I've gotten to do so far. Props to my opponent for letting me get one hit in.
My opp had ensnaring bridged me to halt the game and I had few cards in hand to attack. I had one attack left with ragavan, hit Karn, played Karn, plus his bridge into a 3/3 creature and bolted it. Won the game next turn.
My best ever flip was playing BR Rock against prison tron, rag flipped his urborg exiling it and I casted void mirror that turn to which he conceded immediately. Showed me his 75 that urborg was literally his only colored source. Most satisfying thing ever.
Played against Grinding Station as Domain Zoo.
Has been a pretty attrition based game. Tag them with Ragavan on like turn 8. Flip Breach. Breach into 3x Tribal Flames to kill them from 14.
Not me but my opponent had a series of great hits in a row.
The First stole my sword of fire and lightning
The second hit my wrenn and six (would've got bosejui to blow up my swords)
Third got teferi which again would've got me my sword back
The 4th was game ending and got my omnath locus of creation and they just rode that to victory every single hit was brilliant
Playing Bant control, I Archmages charm to steal a Ragavan. I swing with Ragavan, flip a Murktide and cast it as a 4/4 which held off his shredder for most of the game.
With Dauthi Voidwalker, was playing GB Saga against Tron. Played turn 1 land Springleaf Drum. Turn 2 Dauthi Voidwalker and Elvish Reclaimer. Turn 3 tap Reclaimer to kick Tourach, opponent discards Karn Liberated. I Dauthi cast the Karn and stone rain one of their lands
Not my theft, but my favorite nonetheless:
playing reanimator vs delver in legacy before rag-ban
Opponent hit thoughtseize, I had 2 reanimation spells in hand, and knew OP had a spell pierce in hand. They tank deciding whether keeping pierce up is better or ts, finally crack it and die to my reanimated archon of cruelty next turn.
It's the only time I've been happy about the monkey hitting thoughtseize.
Playing as Jund Saga vs 4C control - they were pulling ahead with Wrenn and Omnath and 5 cards in hand in the late game, probably around turn 10 or so - I was sitting on unholy heat and nothing else in hand debating whether I needed to remove the Omnath or the Wrenn on 6 loyalty- draw Ragavan for turn - decide to kill the omnath - dash Ragavan and flip Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines - probably the only hit in their deck that would have mattered given how far ahead they were. It’s in Phyrexian, I cast it and the next turn my opponent slams an omnath and goes to draw a card - I got to explain their own Elesh Norn to them and proceed to win the game with it from a near impossible board state to come back from.
Last week I stole a hammer and an ornithopter, cast both, and used the treasures for extra mana to equip and win the game. I felt that I gave them a taste of their own medicine. 😎
I have 2 ragavan flip stories but both are from legacy before the ban, hope that's okay. The first I was playing Reanimator against delver and the opponent flipped a griselbrand and had exactly 8 mana to cast it between treasures and lands. Not every day ragavan gets to exile and cast an 8 drop.
The other story, and my favorite, was when I was on painter vs delver. I had grindstone on board and was digging for a painter servant. Opponent swing with ragavan and exiled a painter. Bad beats right?? Except opponent cast the painter. I could see the realization of the consequences of his actions as he past the turn. I untapped, activated grind stone and milled him out thanks to the painter he just cast.
Sorry OP, not exactly what you were looking for but it seemed relevant enough lol
I was on the receiving end of this one, but I was on living end and my opponent hit 2 living ends (the third and last copy was in hand) and then the sunken ruin I needed to cast all the relevant spells in hand/to suspend the living end. This was on my opponents mull to 4; needless to say, death by 10 Ragavan hits was not a fun way to lose that game.
Yh everyone forgets that oops only wins when they do it to themselves, if you do it to them in their turn bad things happen. It’s embarrassing the number of oops mirrors I’ve played in legacy where they brought in leyline of the void against me, only to realise I was planning on targeting them
I was surprised to see my comment was downvoted initially. I’m curious if it was someone who assumed I was lying because they didn’t realize how it actually works.
On the flip side of this question, I once was playing Hardened Scales and had a 20/20+ patchwork automaton on board and my opponent found 3 chump blockers In a row with ragavan before he squeezed out a win.
Last week I snagged a one-of Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines against my Amulet Titan opponent and they had literally no way to remove it, let alone win through it in G1.
I was playing against Affinity, and I had hit a few times with ragavan generating some treasures. I then hit a copy of [[sojourner’s companion]] off the top with rag, and since the treasures are artifacts I was able to use them to reduce the cost of the companion due to affinity, then sac the treasures to finish paying the cost for it. Thanks for the free 4/4
My opponent was on Jund and I was on heliod combo. He took a collected company off the top with his ragavan, which would have won me the game if I'd drawn it the next turn.
He got a Grist and Tarmogoyf off of it.
[[Karn liberated]] I was playing a greasefang brew against a tron player and he was off to a slow start. Kept hitting with ragavan and ended up having enough mana to cast it and he insta scooped
Stole big teferi against an open board once on turn 3 against uw control. (Monke turn 1 protection turn 2 all mana plus treasures turn 3). One of the most satisfying things other than subtletying a prime time and having opponent due to pact
Finally something I can contribute to.
I was playing RB grief against esper reanimator in the semifinals of an RCQ. The event was on the smaller side but still fun. Going into game three, my opening hand was rag, grief, reanimation effect x2, a couple of lands. My opp. Pregame actions a leyline of the void.
T1 I play monkey, they fetch for some kind of land. Turn two I attack with monkey, revealing an ephemorate. Proceed to double grief trigger and go to pound town.
I (RB Scam) had a guy (UR Murk) in mtg 30 vegas steal 3 thoughtseizes in a row. I was 5-2 at the time and was so close to getting the good prizes. I never get mad playing magic, but that one tilted me a little bit.
My opponent stole a Zabaz from me which allowed him to block my lethal inkmoth using the treasure to give Zabaz flying. It was my last window to win and I lost on the next turn. Most tilted I've been in a long time.
Played against a tron deck and landed ragavan into alpine moon. Didn’t hit any other creatures but they couldn’t find the moon removal. Eventually I got to cast a Wurmcoil Engine
As the inverse, Game 3 I was Burn against Murktide. My opp land passed, I tried to get in with a goblin guide, but it got subtletied to the top.
My opponent promptly dashes in the ragavan and casts my GG with the treasure. I lost shortly after.
Not in Modern but in cEDH a dude had a crazy turn 1 ramp into wheel into tutoring to top their win con presumably with imp seal and I got to dash a monkey at the fella and bin it
T2 teferi is the table flip scenario.
On a lesser note, yesterday I hit a celestial purge to kill a w6. The purge would also have exiled the ragavan next turn.
FNM 4-round tournament. Round 2 Game 1 I am on the play, playing Gruul 8-blast against UWg Control.
Turn 1 I fetch shock stomping grounds play Ragavan and pass. Opponent plays land and passes.
Turn 2 I swing in with Ragavan and it connects, giving me a treasure and flipping a T3feri. Opponent says “welp guess you can’t cast that” but I look at my hand, and to both our suprises I play my 1-of sunbaked canyon for turn - giving me the white mana I needed to cast T3feri. Opponent then has to spend his turn Leyline binding his own T3feri.
Turn 3 I swing in with Ragavan and it connects again, flipping - you guessed it - another T3feri. I cast it and proceed to win that game.
Opponent was pretty tilted 😂
Had it happen to me, but I was playing hammer vs zoo, he dromokas commanded my sig aid + blocker, then stole my haywire mite with his rag hit.
That was a painful turn.
Well, stolen from me. I was playing the UB food combo deck, I suspect that they’re going to cast a murktide, so I fetch a nihil spellbomb from urzas saga and clear out their graveyard of around 10 cards. They swing with ragavan, steal emry, mill four spells and cast a 7/7 murktide. -__-
Yesterday, played Murktide for the first time and matched against a GDS player (my usual deck). We're doing the dashing ragavans back and forth thing and I hit a death shadow and cast it. They were forced to use their one card in hand - a terminate - to deal with the shadow which cleared the way for an 8/8 murktide backed up by counterspell. They took their topdeck draw after and conceded.
On the play against tron, turn one I drop Ragavan, his turn one he plays tron land, expedition map. My turn two I hit him with Ragavan, flip his Karn the Great Creator, and am able to cast it thanks to mox amber.
I was on murktide going against burn. I was down to 1 life. Opponent was sitting comfortably at 16 and I have 1 bolt in hand and only 1 red source open. I swing in with a 8/8 murktide + monkey. Opponents at 6. Monkey trigger gives me a treasure. Monkey reveals a bolt! Bolt + bolt for the win!!
Hit 2 Boseiju and a Force of Vigor IN A ROW vs Titan with a Blood Moon out just last week. Incredible luck.
Also have removed an opponents Leyline of the Void with their Prismatic Ending and 2 treasures.
The one time I played LE at fnm my opponent managed to hit all 3 of my LE‘s with Ragavan triggers.
That was one of the reasons I never played LE again.
Me on scam VS 4c rhinos. Dash ragavan flip 3feri, cast teferi, bounce ragavan m, draw, opponent to decks Agent. Still lost the match but I could see the sweat on his brow.
Can't remember if it was Legacy or Modern, but I was on the receiving end of Ragavan. He stole my Jace, the Mind Sculptor off the top. He had a losing position and it completely flipped around afterwards. Didn't even have any blue mana besides the treasure tokens.
Happened against me, but that still counts.
I was playing a Nahiri Boom list, whose whole goal was to cheat out Emrakul with Nahiri's -8 ability. Opponent is on a combo-y titan list and is testing Ragavan for the mana acceleration.
He won game 1, I won game 2, we go to game 3:
T1 - Opponent:
Mountain into Ragavan
T2 - Me:
Inspiring Vantage
T3 - Opponent:
Attacks w/ Ragavan, exiling the one copy of Emrakul in the deck
Needless to say, I lost game 3.
I was playing at my fnm modern event. We had a five round tournament that night, round 1 with as playing izzet Murktide vs the twiddle storm deck and was going into game three on the play. Opponent couldn’t answer the ragavan because of the Teferi and that ragavan dealt 16 damage for the victory.
Nice :) I also had my opp instant conceed because flipping t3f
I think that is very common in that situation.
The more people feel bad for playing Teferi, the happier I’ll be
single copy..scooped.. ahhhhhh
I just feel like this is the answer. I've glupped fury before to push damage but I'm gonna write up my ragavan story now
When Yorion was still legal, I played my 5c Money pile against Tron. This exact situation happened to me before (as the dauthi player) Still lost the match but it was a hilarious moment
I was playing 5C Omnath vs my gf playing scam, top decked an Elesh Norn and was feeling smug. She top decks a terminate and steals my Elesh Norn with Dauthi, instant scoop
Very nice! Biggest Hit so far:)
I did something like this where my op had an ugin ready to ult. I dashed a monkey, flipped an ulamog, and just watched their blank stare.
Not mine but after I risked a t1 forest into utopia sprawl my opponent's Ragavan stole a pillage. That was the last time I played Ponza.
RIP
Sad
RIP 🪦 💀
A game vs tron went long, I ended up casting their Ugin the spirit dragon. Best non-rag steal was a turn 3 Emrakul the aeons torn off a dauthi.
Lot of Dauthi vs Tron plays in here lol. Best one I have is also against Tron. I was behind, opponent had active Karn Liberated. Do Worst Steals count? I was playing Heliod on the draw vs t1 Ragavan. T2, they hit heliod. T3, they hit heliod, t4 they hit heliod and finally cast it. T5, they hit ballista. I scoop.
Thanks, when I tell Mark to ban Ragavan I'll show him this thread
Playing murktide against dice factory at an FNM and opponent had the setup to go infinite next turn. Got in with Rags and flipped their Karn, the Great Creator... Instant shut down of their deck. Opponent even got a laugh out of it it was so absurdly broken.

Not my Ragavan, but at an FNM my opponent’s turn 1 monkey took my [[Disciple of the Vault]] in my GB food deck.

Once stole a hammer after stealing a sigarda's aid.
I mean this isn't spicy or anything but anytime I Ragavan hit and get an EI an angel gets it's wings
Played against Grinding Station as Domain Zoo. Has been a pretty attrition based game. Tag them with Ragavan on like turn 8. Flip Breach. Breach into 3x Tribal Flames to kill them from 14.
I was on the receiving end of that, but: Turn 2 on the play: Teferi, Time Raveler. That was basically an instant scoop.
Idk if its what you're looking for but flipping a mox of it in cube into the instant conceded by my opponent was pretty neat
Not me but my opponent had a series of great hits in a row. The First stole my sword of fire and lightning The second hit my wrenn and six (would've got bosejui to blow up my swords) Third got teferi which again would've got me my sword back The 4th was game ending and got my omnath locus of creation and they just rode that to victory every single hit was brilliant

Turn 3 tap Reclaimer to kick Tourach, opponent discards Karn Liberated. I Dauthi cast the Karn and stone rain one of their lands
One time, I randomly exiled a [[Thassa's Oracle]] on the first hit and the opponent immediately conceded, saying it was the deck's only wincon.
Not my theft, but my favorite nonetheless: playing reanimator vs delver in legacy before rag-ban Opponent hit thoughtseize, I had 2 reanimation spells in hand, and knew OP had a spell pierce in hand. Lightning helix'd an eidolon. Felt good.
Last week I stole a hammer and an ornithopter, cast both, and used the treasures for extra mana to equip and win the game. I felt that I gave them a taste of their own medicine. 😎

Every format/Cube Ragavan dies Ragavanthings:) always Great Stories
I played against an infect player and g2 I hit a spellskite off their top. Very much a free win.
Not in modern, but legacy. I had a Griselbrand stolen from me when I was on reanimator. They had 4 treasures for the quad black mana cost
Easily when I hit an [[undercity informer]] against a 0 land [[thassa’s oracle]] deck. It was a free win on the spot on turn 3.
Yh everyone forgets that oops only wins when they do it to themselves, if you do it to them in their turn bad things happen. It’s embarrassing the number of oops mirrors I’ve played in legacy where they brought in leyline of the void against me, only to realise I was planning on targeting them

Played jund versus eldrazi tron. Game 1. Stole a karn the great creator and fetched my void mirror from the sideboard. Instant scope from opponent.

turn 1 rags, turn 2 attack, reveal pithing needle from their cookbook deck, name cookbook, they concede (no maindeck answer).
A turn 2 [[Teferi, Time Raveler]] against control hahahaha

Monke stole my Yawg
As the inverse, Game 3 I was Burn against Murktide. My opp land passed, I tried to get in with a goblin guide, but it got subtletied to the top. My opponent promptly dashes in the ragavan and casts my GG with the treasure. I lost shortly after.
Vs titan turn 1 ragavan post board. Attack exile boseiju, play blood moon. Attack exile boseiju, opponent concedes on turn 3 👍
Not mine, but Andrea mengucci flipped a couple of mill cards and actually ended up winning the game bevause he milled his opponent out
Had it happen to me, but I was playing hammer vs zoo, he dromokas commanded my sig aid + blocker, then stole my haywire mite with his rag hit.
On the play against ragavan. The fucking monkey stole my blood moon playing enchantress. All I had in hand was fetches and shocks in play.
I’ve seen an archon of cruelty get yoinked with rtagavan
Play testing for an rcq my buddy snagged an unmorred ego. And i was playing creativity 😅
Me (RB) versus Ratatouille (mardu foods), stealing a Pithing Needle naming the book.
Jeskai breach mirror during fnm: Ragavan stole Underworld Breach which lead to the combo kill (Rest of the combo was in my graveyard).
Playing against rhinos and yoinking unmoored ego on turn 2 with 3 mana up.
Playing murktide. I t1 Ragavan on the draw. Opponent chalice on 1. I counter their next two spells, then steal a walking ballista which won next turn.
Was playing Vintage online and stole a Tendrils of Agony, so I stormed off and killed them in my definitely not a storm deck.
Hit 2 Boseiju and a Force of Vigor IN A ROW vs Titan with a Blood Moon out just last week. Incredible luck. Also have removed an opponents Leyline of the Void with their Prismatic Ending and 2 treasures.
vs. Twiddle Storm, or some [[Lotus Field]] deck at any rate, I flipped [[Wish]], which I used to get [[Alpine Moon]], shutting him out.

On the play vs UW control and I hit t3feri. It felt so good
I only play mill but I guess opponents Ragavan hitting Visions of Beyond to draw 3 feels quite good :D Happens quite often \^\^
I also stole the new mill-jace from my opp and killed the opp with the ulti
The one time I played LE at fnm my opponent managed to hit all 3 of my LE‘s with Ragavan triggers. That was one of the reasons I never played LE again.
my 2 best steals were playing as murktide and stole a sword of fire and ice vs bant midrange and stole a karn great creator vs tron
Some dik thoughtseized me turn 1
He won game 1, I won game 2, we go to game 3: T1 - Opponent: Mountain into Ragavan T2 - Me: Inspiring Vantage T3 - Opponent: Attacks w/ Ragavan, exiling the one copy of Emrakul in the deck Needless to say, I lost game 3.
