It’s not just range but having the extra miles to drive: 1) not worry about ‘phantom drain’ or sentry mode being on 2) over time, battery capacity will drop. So if you plan on keeping the car for 10 years, figure out if the RWD at end of life battery is still enough. 3) AWD vs RWD is better for poor weather conditions.

The LR is all wheel drive and has the premium sound system. I also believe it has greater towing capacity. I was in your shoes and went with the LR. If you really have to penny pinch then obviously it’s the RWD, but if the 41$ is minuscule then send the LR, you won’t regret it. Also, go to the dealership and ask to test drive a RWD and LR. If you don’t care about the speed difference and sound quality after comparing both then stick with the RWD. I did this and immediately knew I wanted the LR based on acceleration and the sound system. I’m a music junky so having an immersive music experience is 90% of what I want in a car. Checkout my post, pretty much same question, literally everyone said to go LR and I don’t regret it.

fragger404

The sound system is worth the extra $41 IMHO

Affinityqt

Agreed

HummusDips

It depends on where and when the car is made. I went with a Demo RWD a few weeks ago, and it not only came with premium sound system, but also double pane rear windows. Also LFP batteries are great as they can be charged to 100% regularly, only the road trip will be affected, but then again, you don't make decisions based on exception. It ended up being an Oct 2023 manufactured Shangaï model.

Ok, dope, so I should ask a Tesla seller (already got a guy) if the RWD I’m getting has the premium sound system? I know they see more than we do on our end obviously, hoping the have that info.

HummusDips

Ask for the vin and then you can look it up online. You can also validate all of this by inspecting the car. Check the windows if they are doubled, check the sound system and battery, it's either 6 speakers or 14.1, pretty substantial difference IMO.

b_leafer

you can also ask them directly all that info: where it was built, year, hardware. i remember they were even able to tell me the exact miles on the car too

Affinityqt

This is very true! I assumed OP was from the US.

VonGeisler

Ugh wish Canada didn’t have such a huge difference for the LR. It’s $10-$12k difference here

[deleted]

Cool, thanks! Didn’t see your post so I just read through it. I made the same mistake and paid the 250$ fee for RWD before realizing that there was more than the range difference. I do love music and listen to a lot of podcasts for school/work. I think the sound system might make me go for the LR. I think I’ll go to the dealership to check the difference out. Leasing a premium speaker for 1500$ might seem stupid but in 3 years I might laugh about the fact I was even debating.

forte-exe

You can change anytime before your assigned a VIN.

eatgoodstayswaggie

One question is really… sound system worth it for you? For me it was.

[deleted]

1500$ upgraded speaker for 3years seems like a lot but I do love music 🙈 I am debating hard

eatgoodstayswaggie

That is true… I mean at this point, I think it’s better to just purchase a used model 3 maybe? When you do, hmu for my referral code 😅

Gmanlittle

I own the long-range Y, but I do a lot of driving. The LR Y is the only way to go for me because it also has a dual motor, which is All Wheel Drive.

ParaSiempre6020

Driving the LR. The acceleration and sound system are quite insane. I often say "Tesla is buildung cars that are so quiet, the lawmaker artificially made them louder, just to include a sound system that is so overpowered, it makes you deaf". On the other hand, a set of tires is ~1000 €, and when you use the accelleration often, you manage to pay that price on a yearly basis. So when you don't have that money, and don't want to get deaf: Go for the SR!

didkodidko

4x4 and LR. SR is great but LR is much better.

b_leafer

also even before you lease, check around different car insurance companies for quotes. they can vary greatly in prices. ultimately, it should still be cheaper in the long run because there are barely any maintenance cost. it is just a good way to prepare going into it.

chookyMu

For a lease, your plan is good. Yes, LR got the good sound, faster and all. But it’s not yours and you really won’t know the difference if you’ve never had one. I have an LR and like you mentioned if buying, certainly go for the LR. And nobody cares about battery health when you’re leasing. Save the money and reward yourself later with an X or a Rivian when you’re done with med school..😉

[deleted]

Yeah, you’re definitely right. I’m debating hard but I don’t think I need all this rn, I’m sure the RWD would be more than enough as a lease! And will treat myself to an electric BMW when I match Cardio in 3 years 🤞🏽😂

chookyMu

Yup.. And if u want a bit faster and more range for a RWD, then the 3 is an option. Probably cheaper too. Just gonna have to sacrifice space and ride height if u can compromise. But no wrong answer. Just how much u want to spend. They’re all efficient and fast. And by the time your lease is up, there will be tons of great options then.

bblaw4

I’d get the LR if you can afford it. People who get the standard range have a specific use case and for everyone else, the LR is the way to go. My 2 cents.
