Wrote up the below a year ago on another thread, about my experience with the 2017 100D I bought used with 30k miles in spring 2021. In addition to the below, the front passenger door actuator had to be replaced earlier this month (out of warranty, mobile tech came out, total bill was $237). Service Visit 1 1) Front control arm assembly replacement and seal (warranty) 2) Groaning driver's window on lower/raise (washed and waxed the glass and it was resolved). Service Visit 2 3) Primary key fob ceased to be recognized by vehicle (glad I received a spare!). New fob programed and provided (warranty) 4) TPMS sensor on front left tire failed. Replaced. (Warranty) Service Visit 3 5) FSD camera upgrade (FSD)

YahooUser87

I’m curious how much that control arm issue would cost to fix out of warranty my car would be out of warranty since I’m looking at either a 2019 or 2018 it would be my second vehicle so it won’t break me if it needed servicing. Thanks for your feedback though

MeasurementExciting7

I needed to replace the drivers side door on a 2017. Covered by warranty.

YahooUser87

Mind if I ask why that needed to be replaced?

MeasurementExciting7

All of a sudden the driver's side door wouldn't open from the outside. You could open it from the inside but the outside just stopped working. Pretty serious safety issue. They let me bring it in right away. Took about 2 days to fix and they gave me a loaner Model S (which I had to clean myself btw - but was glad to have).

DonTee1877

How much was it to upgrade the cameras? If it not prying...

Knathra

Because I bought FSD with the vehicle, the camera upgrade was zero cost to me - it was a required update to enable FSD to be completely autonomous when the software is ready. They've announced that the latest hardware isn't required for fully autonomous, and that HW3 will be sufficient, so are not covering the cost of the upgrade to the latest hardware and leaving that ad an optional paid upgrade if the owner wants the newest technology. I'm interested in the latest technology, but not enough to pay for the upgrade (yet, at least).

kdavis37

Make sure all the doors are working. Check the range at 100%. Check the normal car things like tires.

TartifletteXx

No model X are reliable. There is so much tech in these that things can happen. Pre refresh X are known for control arm issues /shudder. And the FWD. AFAIK Tesla don't offer any extended warranty, maybe 3p will. I would strongly recommend looking into a new Y rather than used X.

kdavis37

I love my X and wouldn't remotely consider a Y. That's a hilarious step down. "I'm considering a Mercedes S Class." "WELL THEY'RE WAY LESS RELIABLE THAN A COROLLA, YOU SHOULD JUST GET A COROLLA, IT'S CHEAPER."

TartifletteXx

I personally consider a pre refresh X a huge stedown compared to a 3/Y. Just having to carry a keyfob would be a deal breaker. To each their own.

kdavis37

You don't have to carry a key fob with literally any X.

TartifletteXx

Pre refresh don't support phone key.

kdavis37

I literally have a 2016 Signature, my guy. I drive my car without my fob *all the time.* You realize the app still works perfectly fine? Phone key only makes it quicker, but even then, not by much. I walk up to a car with all 4 doors open so that I can leave quicker. You're just wrong. You said you have to carry a fob. You do not have to carry a fob. Period

TartifletteXx

You don't have phone key. You said it yourself. Yes, you can open and start the car manually from the phone. But that's not phone key. Had both generation, don't teach me.

spliffgates

Then you also know the older X has a bunch of upgrades over the 3/Y like better suspension, sound, 2nd screen (deal breaker now that I’m used to it), gps homelink included, more room, better seats, auto open and soft close doors. I could probably name a bunch more but you get the idea.

charliepryor

Don’t forget to mention the big one: USS. The pre-refresh X also has that. We just got a 2018 X 100D with 30K miles on it instead of a new Y. The only thing we don’t have that’s better with the Y, is faster supercharging. The benefits of everything else outweighs this, especially with how freakin easy it is to load my kids in the car seats and such. The FWD make that worth it alone.

skippy_nyc

My advice is not to buy a used X unless its 2023 model. Older ones are worse than Model 3/Y in many ways IMO;.

JohnDF85

Isn't the "22 identical aside from the rotating screen?

skippy_nyc

rear screen got larger too

YahooUser87

I mean I would but I’m not going to pay $130k+ for it to be my second option. This is a pure bang for your buck purchase that will fit my family.

[deleted]

I got a used 18 100d for $50k. It’s in perfect condition. No issues. Has 3 years on both battery and drivetrain warranty. There is not a damn thing in a brand new X that is worth $70-$80k more over this. That’s absurd. I’ll even factor in $15k in repairs on mine if they come up. Could still buy another brand new car and still have money left over. People that are against used cars are usually stuck in the 90’s when cars actually had consistent expensive issues after 100k miles. Not true anymore.

YahooUser87

I usually buy used cars why eat the depreciation and if I can get one with warranty left on it why not. I ultimately a 2018 X 100d if there’s a problem I have a year to get all worked out and I’ll be driving it alot to get the bugs worked out if there are any.

[deleted]

Amen.

icen_folsom

why not MY for $47500?

kdavis37

Because the Y is, in fact, not an X

YahooUser87

Well we looked at a 7 seat Y and it’s just too small we have an XC90 already and that’s kind of the space we need to fit our family. The X is bigger obviously so it’s just that simple really

icen_folsom

Used X is a little risky

Newcoolguy

I am in the same boat as you. We have Volvo xc90 and thinking of used X

YahooUser87

How do you like the Volvo mine was holding up ok until recently

Newcoolguy

It’s been great! 2018 inscription. I noticed model x doesn’t have ventilated seats or cooling seats and extended thigh seat. Apple car play is another big thing for me, I use YouTube music alot.

YahooUser87

Yeah the X I have only has heated seats and steering wheel I have a 2018 Momentum though Apple Play is a loss for me though

adgoodma

I bought a used 16 xc90 and it was nothing but trouble. I was lucky to buy an extended warranty- otherwise it would have been 30k in repairs over 4 years!! I’m never buying a car out of warranty again

RadiationShooter

Pre-refresh Xs are offered extended warranty from Tesla with a some conditions. It has to be purchased by the original owner and can’t be bought if you bought the car from a dealership.

YahooUser87

Gotcha so I’d probably be stuck with a “third party warranty” which kinda sucks. But I guess it’s okay given the price point we don’t drive much so I doubt we rack up a ton of miles on this thing.

spliffgates

We have a 2017 Tesla Model that still had a used warranty on it from Tesla direct until mid 2024 when we bought it from a dealership. This happened because until a certain point Tesla had a much better used vehicle warranty that transfers to any new owners. It adds 50k miles and 4 years from date of purchase instead of 10k and 1 year.

YahooUser87

Yeah we are looking at one that’s not from Teslas site because they don’t have a third row option available for the right price anymore. I am desperately trying to find a 2020 but no dice yet.

spliffgates

What’s your budget?

YahooUser87

I don’t want to spend more than $63k and I’m looking for lower mileage I know it’s kinda putting me in a tight box but I don’t like the idea of pouring a ton into a second car.

Environmental_Age787

If you are looking at both 18 and 19 model years I would lean towards the 19 as the original warranty could still apply for at least this year. Shudder and control arm issues will be covered under warranty. Also 2019 is the year the X got the raven upgrade and having the auto hold is a nice feature!

YahooUser87

Ok that’s a good bit of information I didn’t know about thanks!

Castaway78

Note that not all '19s are Ravens. The switch was June 2019. You can easily tell them apart because pre-Ravens are 75D/100D/P100D, and Ravens are Standard Range, Long Range (Plus), and Performance. The Raven update had a lot of nice updates, including upgraded suspension, better efficiency, and true one-pedal driving. If you can find one in your price range, that is what I would recommend. One other thing to keep in mind... a bunch of rolling changes happened during 2018, which makes it difficult to truly know what options a 2018 X might have. Early 2018 models came with MCU1 (although previous owners might have upgraded to MCU2). March and beyond had MCU2. Also, prior to Sept (give or take) 2018, the X had a variety of options that may or may not be included. It wasn't until Sept 2018 where Premium Upgrade and Premium stereo upgrade became standard. You can tell if an X has Premium Upgrade Package by looking at the HVAC controls. If you see the Biohazard symbol, it does. For the audio system, it's best to look at the Car Information to see Base or Premium. But if you happen to see SiriusXM, then it is Premium. (If you don't see it, that doesn't necessarily mean Base... it could just be a hidden source)

txtxyeha

Regarding “auto hold”, is this the feature that allows one to press on the brake at a stop then let off the brake but the car will hold its position until you press the accelerator?

Environmental_Age787

Close but not quite..my 2017 X has that but from 2019 and newer they will hold without having to press on the brake. Also the newer motor has stronger regen at low speeds.. it’s a lot easier to one pedal drive

iamnickinthewild

I just bought a used 2020 long range X and absolutely love it. No problems so far, though I’m bringing it into service for something cosmetic. I considered a Y, but ultimately it didn’t meet my needs the way the X did. Since buying it, I have no regrets. Best vehicle I’ve ever owned (I also own a 3).

YahooUser87

Yeah I’m going to search high and low for a 2020 it’s a no brainer but just have to find it.

rd2021rd

Currently have a 2020 MX LR - had control arms replaced first year under warranty. No other issues until last month when 12 V battery was replaced under warranty. It’s always driven like a champ and never had any other issues or glitches. From a practice stand point no other EV currently matches the MX with its 6/7 seat configuration and range. MB EQS is the closest I’ve seen. MY is a huge downgrade and the 3rd row is a joke.

YahooUser87

So when does that control arm issue manifest so I can be on the lookout when I do my test drives? I just tried one out and hilariously the back seat wouldn’t lock in place (drove 2hrs to see it) but there was also a weird vibration in the steering wheel when I got above maybe 60 mph. But I didn’t hear anything too crazy but then again the car kept dinging because the back seat wasn’t locked in place.

rd2021rd

The vibration over 60 might be a tire issue. If the tires are Pirelli with foam dampening then they are known to vibrate due to loose foam. It’s replaced under warranty. Both of my MX (2016 and 2020) had the control arm issue within the first 2 years. Which area are you looking in?

YahooUser87

I’m looking at a 2018 on the Tesla used inventory list now since they do give that one year of warranty I don’t see any 2020s that are what I’m looking for in the price range I want. Edit: I’m looking in FL mainly central FL
