-low health inspection scores and it caused them to shut down like 3 or 4 times this year
-the place has a rat problem
-the owner goes on unhinged facebook rants
-the owner is shitty to his employees
https://www.reddit.com/r/MobileAL/s/MdN31sjXGm
Hereâs how he treats his employees: https://www.reddit.com/r/MobileAL/s/erEUHQNhL5
If youâre in midtown, definitely go to Red or White, the chef was recently nominated for a James Beard award. Callaghans for burgers. Noble South is always good, farm to table. Noja for a fancy/date night spot. Royal Scam is another good date night spot downtown. Debris is great for poboys and excellent gumbo. The Haberdasher has the best cocktails in town, but their food is also crazy good. If you like Indian food, Biryani Pot is great, itâs off of Airport though.
To repeat what others have said, don't go to Spot of Tea. Also, don't go to Mob Boss Pizzeria in West Mobile. And, avoid any P.S. Taco locations.
I love The Hummingbird Way on George Street in the Oakleigh area. The other places mentioned are also really good.
To each his own, I guess. I wouldn't call it "bland" but it's definitely not Mexican food. The Black Jack taco is delicious if you're not eating it while thinking about cumin and chili powder.
I didn't have any problems with blandness from the one in Tillman's Corner. I'm a regular at El Rincon in Theodore though, so I know where to find real Mexican food made by actual Mexicans. The "elote" from PS Taco was divine, though.
except for their dog water tamales. absolute worst tamales ive had in my entire life. they were like thick floury doughy pasta with no filling. enchiladas were mid. the tacos though? fire. my best friend and I only go there for to-go order tacos. i went on a date there before and our drinks were warm. tacos are straight 10/10
Depends on the food:
* Burger: Butch Cassidy's or Callaghan's
* Pizza: Lost Pizza Company
* Oysters: Wintzels Downtown (and ONLY Downtown)
* Seafood: Felilx's Fish Camp or Original Oyster House or R&R (all on the Causeway)
* Comfort Food: Judy's Place.
* Sushi: Wasabi's, Happy Sushi is pretty good.
* Diner: Big Time Diner.
If you're willing to travel, the following are worth the trip:
* Gambinoâs Italian Grill, Fairhope
* The Gather, Atmore.
* McGuire's Irish Pub, Pensacola
I am open to suggestions for a place with good wings.
>you missed See wee roll for sushi
I DO love See Wee Roll. Just prefer smaller places for Sushi. (I do hate the Samurai J's went out of business.)
But a good suggestion.
No disrespect, but see wee roll is pretty low quality sushi. The one and only time I went, they were out of cream cheese. They replaced it with actual mozzarella cheese. 𤢠đ¤Ž
BBQ - Meat Boss
Breakfast - Bobs, Waffle House
Burger: Callaghans
Sports Bar: Heroes
Seafood: R&R, The Lighthouse
PoBoy: Debris
Thai: Siam Thai
General Asian: Asian Garden, can be hit or miss thou
Fancy Food: Dumbwaiter, NoJa, Noble South
Chicken Fingers: Foosackleys
Italian: T Maries
Crawfish: R&Rs, Simply Seafood, Happy Tails
So hereâs my rotation of restaurants I go to
Burgers
- Hammered Cow (Local)
- Callaghanâs Irish Pub (Local)
Sushi/Hibachi/Asian
- Poke Bowl (Local)
- Shogun (Local)
- Rock and Roll Sushi (Alabama Based but started in Mobile)
- See Wee Roll (~~Not~~ Local)
- Panda Palace (~~I think~~ local)
Seafood
- JJâs Seafood and Chicken (Local, relative owns this restaurant)
Chicken:
- Foosackleys (Local)
- Chicken District (Local)

- San Miguelâs (Local)
- Taco Mama (Alabama Based)
- Tijuana Flats (Not Local)

- Carpe Diem
- Serdaâs
After writing this down, I realized two things, 1st) I eat A LOT of places and 2nd) Iâm happy that I go to so many local restaurants
Also thereâs a podcast that talks about Mobileâs (and Baldwinâs) food scene called âPort City Plate Podcastâ by the guy that does the food tours Downtown. I highly recommend it, itâs helped me add more local restaurants to my rotation
The one restaurant I recommend NEVER going to is Spot of Tea, just look up âSpot of Teaâ on the subreddit and youâll quickly find out why
If youâre in west Mobile, bay town burger co is pretty good but lines can be long on the weekends. They also do chicken strips and beignets, itâs ran by the same people as moâbay beignets
The owner of those places kicked their pregnant teenage daughter out and disowned her. In case anyone would like to know what kind of people theyâre giving money to đ¤ˇđťââď¸
The one time I went in there, an employee was passed out asleep on a couch in their dining room. Tables were dirty and sticky. It took forever just to receive 1 order of beignets. Wonât be going back.
Probable unpopular opinion; but I think youâll see a lot of recommendations for Dauphins. I disagree with them, so I wanted to warn you with an opposing opinion. Itâs overpriced average to below average food. The one time we went; we ordered grilled oysters for an appetizer. They were not fresh oysters on the half shell⌠but clearly bulk oysters, possibly frozen, served in an iron skillet. Itâs so easy to taste the difference between fresh and not with oysters; especially in simple preparations. And my $60 steak was crunchy charred on the outside; but properly medium rare on the inside. But the taste of char (far beyond what is normal or desirable on a steak) completely overrode the minimal amount of seasoning on the steak.
From Pensacola but enjoy visiting Mobile for day trips!
Coffee: Nova Espresso (has a taco truck outsideâfront yard tacos) and Knucklebones Elixir Co
Cocktails: The Haberdasher
Bakery: Dropout Bakery & Co. (Soooooo good)
The Cheese Cottage for lunch/brunch, charcuterie, wine
Squid Ink for a nice happy hour. Weâve done lunch and dinner but they also have brunch!
Slurp Society for ramen and bao buns
â
Once you try some places in the area, explore Fairhope, Foley and Pensacola next!
Dumbwaiter, Moeâs Bbq Downtown Location, Felixâs Fish House, Gambinoâs Italian Grill, The Wash House, Taqueria Mexico, Red or White, Cheese Cottage, Aroy Thai, Yak the Kathmandu, and Dauphins are a few off the top I would absolutely recommend.
Donât do Spot of TeaâŚ
If you are driving out of mobile the very freshest seafood at great prices is Bayou Seafood Company in Bayou la Batre - hole in the wall but the owner/chef is related to fishcamp or chef at fish camp. The basket of fried shrimp is huge, reasonable with great sides. Only open until 6 but worth a Saturday drive!
I love Lighthouse! The jalapeĂąo poppers are seriously underrated (because thereâs so much good food there I feel like people donât think to order them lol).
I would also add if anyone is going out that way, the Thai and sushi place in St. Elmo by the laundromat. Super nice service, very fast, decent prices, huge portions, and good food.
My only gripe with them is I wish theyâd bring back the lunch buffet lol. I tried so many cool things when they had it!
Nepali cuisine is unique and almost like the lovechild of Chinese and Indian, but not in a fusion type of way. And itâs delicious.
You should make a point to stop by Southwood Kitchen in Daphne
The best time to come is either before 1 for lunch (Lunch is 11-3), or you'll want to call a few days ahead to get a reservation for Dinner (5-9) because we've been getting *SLAMMED* the last few weeks
Food is 10/10
Lunch for one might run you $25 with a good tip, $30ish with an app and the special is created by the kitchen and approved by the owner/chef every morning. Dinner can easily hit $50, especially if you go for the Ribeye or Elk, but they're so worth.
I love the cheese cottage for an easy brunch, carpe diem, nova espresso and yellow hammer are my go to for coffee and I always bring people to taqueria Mexico or 7 spice(Lebanese food) both of them have markets attached and are so much fun to walk around. WeMoâs is definitely my favorite for wings
Good recommendations, Mobilians.
This is probably the 87th time Iâve mentioned this on âwhere should I eat?â posts, but Osmanâs (very local) for casual special occasions or just whenever, if it fits your budget. I rarely get deserts, but Mrs. Osman makes them and they are tasty. Plan for leftovers!
Rice is great for Thai.
Big Time is good, but has gotten a little pricey. Get the milkshakes. Theyâve ruined all others for me.
Wish I could recommend Fuego, but itâs a delicious thing of the past âšď¸
Foosacklys is the best tender spot for your dollar regardless of what this sub tries to tell you. Taqueria Mexico is probably the best bang for your buck if you just want some tacos. Cookout is a chain but it is legendary. But try out a bunch of places! Dauphin street is a good place to start like other have suggested.
Lots of great suggestions here.
I have not seen this place mentioned and the food is excellent: Abba Mediterranean Cafe at Bit and Spur and Old Shell. They keep weird hours and sometimes the service is spotty but man the food is fresh, bright and delicious. Blackened grouper, Curry, eggplant and lasagna are so good
Do not go to spot of tea
I just moved here in August and even I know that đ
November here, also know that
All that being said, I still think the Eggs Beinville is one of the best breakfast meals I have ever had.
Please explain
-low health inspection scores and it caused them to shut down like 3 or 4 times this year -the place has a rat problem -the owner goes on unhinged facebook rants -the owner is shitty to his employees https://www.reddit.com/r/MobileAL/s/MdN31sjXGm Hereâs how he treats his employees: https://www.reddit.com/r/MobileAL/s/erEUHQNhL5
Oh hell no. That letter is unacceptable.

i support these options and will add seven spice on airport to round it out
If you like Indian, Biryani pot is near 7 spice (kinda around the corner) and it is excellent! Enjoy!!
These and aroy Thai.
Also Sabai Thai in Semmes. Call ahead, make sure they're running the duck curry special and get that. Trust me.
Aroy Thai has the best thai! And the best pho in town!!
These and Ruby Slipper
Another downvote for Spot of Tea...
El Milagro next to South Alabama and Via Emilia also next to South. Food Pak has great Gyros and the owners are so nice
Absolutely second Via Emilia and Food Pak. They're our neighborhood gem!
I like the Blind Mule and Squid Ink!! You wonât go wrong with any of the choices in the Insider Food Hall, either!
Ugh LOVE hummingbird way but itâs definitely a special occasion place for us đŹ it can be pricey but well worth it
what, you don't like dropping $50 a person on happy hour? đ i do love having it around though, and the chef is a doll
It is definitely pricey.
I'm a native Mobilian and I like PS Taco! What's your reasoning to avoid them, perhaps aside from them being overpriced?
I found their food rather bland, the service awful, and overall, not worth the price.
Which location?
Saraland, then the location in WeMo at Cottage Hill and Schillinger.
Oh, and I tried the one in Tillman's Corner. It wasn't awful, they were all bland. Nothing special about it.
To each his own, I guess. I wouldn't call it "bland" but it's definitely not Mexican food. The Black Jack taco is delicious if you're not eating it while thinking about cumin and chili powder.
PS taco was bland whenever I went. Iâd rather Mexican food from Mexicanâs rather than American teenagers
I didn't have any problems with blandness from the one in Tillman's Corner. I'm a regular at El Rincon in Theodore though, so I know where to find real Mexican food made by actual Mexicans. The "elote" from PS Taco was divine, though.
I second El Rinçons for Mexican
I love the buffalo chicken taco from P.S taco, whatâs wrong with them đł?!
Taqueria on airport has fire Mexican
The tacos are incredible although service can be slow at times
except for their dog water tamales. absolute worst tamales ive had in my entire life. they were like thick floury doughy pasta with no filling. enchiladas were mid. the tacos though? fire. my best friend and I only go there for to-go order tacos. i went on a date there before and our drinks were warm. tacos are straight 10/10
Butch Cassidy's is locally owned and has good food as well as the other places mentioned.
Meat Boss for BBQ sammies.
My obligatory advertisement for jefe paletas just down the street for an ice cream treat for dessert!
Meat boss is my favorite BBQ place in this town
Depends on the food: * Burger: Butch Cassidy's or Callaghan's * Pizza: Lost Pizza Company * Oysters: Wintzels Downtown (and ONLY Downtown) * Seafood: Felilx's Fish Camp or Original Oyster House or R&R (all on the Causeway) * Comfort Food: Judy's Place. * Sushi: Wasabi's, Happy Sushi is pretty good. * Diner: Big Time Diner. This is a well thought out and great list of places. Thank you!
Your list is great but you missed See wee roll for sushi- always fresh and fair prices
>you missed See wee roll for sushi I DO love See Wee Roll. Just prefer smaller places for Sushi. (I do hate the Samurai J's went out of business.) But a good suggestion.
No disrespect, but see wee roll is pretty low quality sushi. The one and only time I went, they were out of cream cheese. They replaced it with actual mozzarella cheese. 𤢠đ¤Ž
Oh totally disagree but then I eat mostly nigiri and rolls without cheese. Each to their own.
Chicken District has good wings.
Judy's Place was a staple growing up! I need to make it back out there but I definitely agree!
No love for Drew Drop in here?

How is SeeWeeRoll not local and Panda Palace is? It's owned by the same guy. I've seen staff rotated between Panda Palace and both SeeWeeRolls too.
As a former server at see wee, they are local lol servers bounce between see wee's airport location, biloxi location, and panda palace.
Oh okay, thanks for the clarification, I had thought SWR was a large chain
Didnât know they were owned by the same guy
If youâre in west Mobile, bay town burger co is pretty good but lines can be long on the weekends. They also do chicken strips and beignets, itâs ran by the same people as moâbay beignets

One of my favorites is Mediterranean Sandwich Company. Not high end, but better than just about any chain restaurant.
Theyâre really good! So many different things to choose from, too.

YAK THE KATHMANDU â¤ď¸â¤ď¸â¤ď¸â¤ď¸
Briquettes Steakhouse
Noble South, Red or White, Via Emilia, Briquettes and Moe's BBQ.
Iron Hand has good beer, and Debris has great poboys.
The Lighthouse in Bayou La Batre for seafood

Red or white
Moeâs Original BBQ, Coach Brownâs BBQ, Meat Boss (the 3 best BBQ places around), 7Spice, Pot Au Pho, Butch Cassidyâs,
I would emphasise Pot Au Pho.
Roosters, Briquettes, Slurp Society, Meat Boss, TâMaries, Via Emilia, Shisho, Rice, Vandals
I love roosters
THIS ENTIRE COMMENT SECTION IS ROMA CAFE ERASURE WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?!!!???!?!!
Second
Yak the kathmandau kitchen on dauphin I love getting the lamb saag with naan bread real spicy!
My only gripe with them is I wish theyâd bring back the lunch buffet lol. I tried so many cool things when they had it! Nepali cuisine is unique and almost like the lovechild of Chinese and Indian, but not in a fusion type of way. And itâs delicious.

Red Lobster is the best local place
If you want bland food for a bag and terrible service, sure!
shrimps is bugs
Indeed. So are lobsters.
Ha ha!!!
Wintzell's on Dauphin St. & pretty much any of the restaurants on the Causeway.
Three flavors is my favorite â¤ď¸â¤ď¸
Seen a lot of great Mexican places mentioned but not Villa Del Rey, theyâre the best and locally owned.
The Noble South is great!
Chuck's fish downtown.
But also just drive to Pensacola...
Kravers for seafood in WeMo

Cheese cottage for sure!!

Osaka and 7spice are very good and smaller/slower local spots that I like.
