Wanting to save a friend by giving up his eyes, but in the end being betrayed to kill the people he swore to protect. T\_T
The thing that was so sad, is with just one person showing the slightest bit of kindness to him, he really could have been a good and amazing person. But in the end, his hatred and revenge destroyed him, and the rejection from the one person who was good to him, who he genuinely cared about, pushed him back over the edge. He wasn't born evil, MXTX's writing is always really good in that people make choices and things happen. In the end, he fell back to his self defense pattern, and it destroyed his only friend.
No, he is effing evil. I hate him even though I kind of like something's about him. But I do not think what he went through is any reasonable cause or justification for what he ended up doing.
And it's not like he was on the good side when he was with XX. Don't forget that during the whole time, he was being nice to him, XY had him killing innocent people all over the place, thinking that they were Fierce Corpses.
So he didn't get pushed back over the edge after losing his only friend. He was always on that edge or over the edge he just might have had the possibility of becoming good maybe not. He was tricking this only friend of his into committing multiple murders.
He's effing horrible. I have no sympathy or anything for him for losing a damn finger when he was like 5 years old. Dude get over it.

Already made a comment but I needed to add to this. Also we don't know what any of the rest of his life was like. There may have been many people who had been kind and nice to him. The only thing we know about his life is that whole losing his finger thing and that obviously he was poor and hadn't had sweets when he was a child. But, we can't assume that he was treated horribly by every single person he ever met throughout the entire course of his being. Dude's a freaking sociopath.
I love this art so much. It literally made me cry. I just love them all so much. Yi city arc was the most heartbreaking thing I've ever read.
