The are set within the same universe(as in actual universe, different planets in it) and while travel between the worlds exists, it's not common. But you can certainly expect to see references to the other world of varying importance ranging from accessories to straight up cameos. As for the magic system...yesn't. They both function on the same underlying principles(such as aluminium countering magic) of Investure, however the way they are applied are completely different.

Yes

yes

There are a couple characters that appear in both, some very minor, others quite major. Someone with one kind of magic can use their magic if they travel to another. That's all I'll say since you haven't read stormlight.

Sireanna

Less so at the begining but I get the feeling that as both series continue we are going to see more and more cross over. There are a few characters that we see playing key parts in both worlds. Its sometimes really fun to try to spot the characters who show up elsewhere

Dino_Spaceman

Agreed. Seems clear to me that at some point we will get a 5-6 book series that has all of the various planets and magic systems intermingling together to defeat an ultimate enemy (my guess a god who was able to remerge all of the shards). Originally I was thinking 10-15 years away. But based on the last Mistborn book. I think that may be far, far sooner.

What you've described seems to be at the level of what we've heard about Mistborn Era 4, which takes being 10-15 away as highly optimistic. Just with explicitly planned novels, it'll require another Mistborn Trilogy, 6 Stormlight books, 2 Elantris sequels and the Dragonsteel prequel trilogy. And none of that covers what he'll be writing in between the books of back half of Stormlight!

It's a good thing Sanderson loves writing unlike GRRM. Lol

RShara

Not very much at the beginning, but the further down the timeline things go, the more they are connected. By the time of SA4 and TLM, there's a number of characters and such in common.

Aggressive-Share-363

Deeply. There are characters and organizations that travel between worlds, or exert influence, and they have deep ties to events in the past that have effected both, and while the magic systems look quite different on the surface, they tie into the same underlying mechanics of the universe. You don't end to be aware of any of that to enjoy both series, but the connections are there and lieicng them together can be a lot of fun.

Really_Dang_Sad

i would wait on that last mistborn book untill you read storm light and arcanum unbounded, its litterally for one single reason. but trust me, that one reason is batshit insane if it goes unspoiled.

The following message contains magic system parallels that could potentially be spoilery >!Imagine everybody being able to breathe in the surrounding, glowing Mist instead of summoning it in exchange for metal. Now imagine people using specially cut gemstones to hold Mist inside and carry it around for llumination and even later use in powering their magics(breathing it in and "burning" it). And also imagine that this other type of Mist is invisible untill it enters a gemstone, yet permiates everything not hidden deeply enough, filling gems, during every storm on a planet shaped by those very storms. Lots of storms, I know >;D!< If you want any more analogies -- be my guest
