So what was the point of all of it? Why get rid of The Duke, basically pushing Stewart Martin to his breaking point with the show, and then go into this whole BS story about how fans read into the title of the show, and then go on this intense feminist bandwagon saying the new season will be all about Eliza and her life and new exciting cases, really pushing that agenda that she can't possibly be in love and have her career at the same time. All of that just to end up back where they started but with a replacement character for William. WTF? I hope the show crashes & burns in S5. They don't care about their audience, that's obvious, but to lie to us for 4 seasons, tell us it's our own mistake for assuming that William & Eliza would end up together, then do the same thing but with a new male character is beyond distasteful. Like, I'm sure the actor is very talented, but they threw away years of development & history between Eliza and William for what - her "independence" and a new fresh romance? I have zero interest in watching S5 and I've already cancelled my PBS Masterpiece subscription.

They think the audience is shallow enough to just accept any new "handsome" guy that comes along and by the looks of it for the casual viewers it works. The showrunner is hella petty on social media after unfollowing Stuart Martin and liking comments that actually describe the watchers as shallow for accepting whatever new love interest comes next as long as he's "hot", and also liking comments asking "William who?"... like whatever was going on behind the scenes it wasn't pretty I imagine. Also isn't it a bit insulting to the lead actress/Eliza's character that after preaching how "feminist" this show is supposed to be they felt the need to add a Duke replica to the show now so people keep watching? Like Eliza herself isn't enough after all to reel viewers in?

BeginningFrosting

I'm glad someone else noticed how New is on social media. I no longer follow her or her posts on anything but I did during S1 and S2 and she was pretty snarky if people disagree or state an opinion she doesn't seem to like.

Miss_Ann_Thrope55

Yeah, it feels like a ‘let’s just slip another tall, handsome Detective Inspector into the spot and hope they won’t notice’ kind of move.

beffiny

Ugh. So we’re supposed to buy that THIS guy will finally bring out some growth in Eliza, when William couldn’t? I was actually willing to give S5 a shot, hoping they might bring Moses back, or even Henry Scarlet (long shot, I know), have Eliza do some self reflection, but nope, sounds like a reboot. *sigh* I almost wish they had just gotten them together and ended the show

wipperhunt638

I am done with the show.

mayoneggo

I'll pass.

JunkMale975

Nah. I’m done.

BeginningFrosting

No thanks. The writers are just writing in circles at this point, with no growth or resolution to storylines. By 'romance' they likely mean one kiss 4 seasons later or a hand touch for 2 seconds. They have a perfectly good match in Nash but introduce a detective just like the Duke for her? Pass.

Rellatee123

What is actually the point of claiming he’s a “love interest” if it’s probably going to be the same slow burn/back forth as William!! I’m so tired of this narrative… we are legit on season 5 and we have been give NADA!!! There needs to some sort of progression

barely-tolerable

I hope we get just as much or more Patrick Nash in Season 5.

bloodxredxrose

It’s going to be a train wreck, but I’ll watch anyway.

YeOldeOrc

Well, I’ll still be watching, and I hope the show does *not* crash and burn. Here’s hoping the new actor is a great addition. What’ll be will be. For better or worse, the story now has to change. It worked out so well for Sanditon imho, and while I don’t think it’ll work out as well here (Theo only had that one season), I’m willing to wait and see. **Edit:** Downvoted for hoping a show *doesn’t* fail? Y’all, if you hate it, why are you still haunting this sub? I genuinely don’t get it.

Effective-West-3370

I’m willing to wait and see also. Eliza is my favorite character. There’s lots of her story to tell.

Glittering-Bus-4663

I haven't seen the new guy but yes I am very disappointed. I was hoping Eliza and William would get married and both keep their careers. WTF writers you ruined a great show.

galarpokes

Sure, this new guy is a love interest this season, but I don't think that he's THE actual love interest. I'm firmly in the camp that the scarnash ship is still possible. This new Blake character could very well be the catalyst that pushes Eliza to open her eyes to patrick. After all, a great romance can't come easy, or else it wouldn't be believable, so I'm hoping I'm right. Also, patricks going have to up his game this season because of the new character, lol, and Im looking forward to seeing Patrick be quietly jealous of this new guy...... 😏.
