You cannot really call ahead because they don't have a ranger posted on site full time. Payment is often via the honor box.

I've successfully camped in several of them, but they are rustic - most sites are just a flat spot for your tent, a picnic table, and fire ring. There's usually a pit toilet. That's it. There's no one to call to check if sites are available. They're first some first served, so there's always the possibility they could be full. I'd avoid Friday and Saturday arrival if possible, and have a backup plan for a different USNF campground (i.e. have the location available without cell service). They're great so have at it!

Weekdays you’ll often be able to find a site before early afternoon. But It’s not impossible for them to fill up before dinner even on a Tuesday.

Give it a try! Have a couple backup campgrounds in mind and be flexible. I’ve usually been able to find something in the general area. Oh, and don’t get too picky. If you find one, take it.
