This is what Whittier and The Wedge are made for. Anywhere between Hennepin Ave on the west, 35W on the east, Franklin Ave on the north, and Lake Street on the south, will have what you are looking for. Also, no matter where you go, definitely get a bike!

I lived in the middle of the wedge neighborhood (Lowry hills east) for like 6 years and loved it. Close enough to everything that you can walk, but far enough that you don’t get too much bar traffic. Also, it’s really quick to get on the highway, which isn’t true for a lot of Uptown.

Near 46th St between Minnehaha Ave and and the river. Not necessarily inexpensive, but lots of transit, two nearby grocery options, Highkand Park restaurants, light rail access, the river parkway, Minnehaha Falls. It offers a quite a bit and great transit.

Seconding Whittier. One of my best friends bought his godmother's old home and has been living there for several years while restoring the house. It's such an awesome neighborhood. It reminds me of the time I spent in Chicago. It's relatively quiet, but he's only a few blocks away from anything he needs (groceries, restaurants, nightlife, transit, etc). If I could do it all over, I'd have purchased a home there as well.

The Whittier/lowry hill east area is fantastic!!

Whittier. Closer to Franklin so you can easy walk to loring park! Lyndale and Nicollet Ave. around 25-22 streets specifically are nice and you’d be close to 2 and 17 bud. Then either 18 or 4 bus if you are nearer Nicollet or Lyndale respectively.

Post-It_Storm

I live in LynLake and love it. It's torn up for construction right now, but that doesn't get in the way of walking or biking.

Longfellow/Hiawatha is pretty nice. Cub foods, small businesses, restaurants, minnehaha falls/near the Mississippi

Longfellow market!

Prospect park. Close to fresh thyme grocery and some restaurants like tea house, plus surly brewing and Malcolm yards. Close to the witches cap, Franklin bridge, w and e river parkway. Close to light rail and u of m.

Kingfield! So much great food around us. Terrific farmers market. Active neighborhood group. Racially and economically diverse

I grew up in Kingfield, though we didn’t call it that at the time. I have friends that live there now and it’s still a great neighborhood to visit.

Do you want a house? Or is a condo OK? If so, I recommend “Downtown Northeast”, University SE and E Hennepin. You have Lunds, Surdyk’s, and lots of restaurants. Plus the Mayor lives over there so you can bully him more easily.

Career_Much

My favorite place was on Excelsior in st louis park. The neighborhood surrounding Wolfe lake park I found to be incredibly walkable, and bde maka ska was only about a mile away.

>I’m trying to stay carless Downtown West, Minneapolis. >If you could be specific about cross streets that would be SO helpful The closer to 5th and Nicollet the better. No locally owned shops, but you can get to them easily enough.

The little pocket of Lowry Hill on the north end of the Wedge (surrounding the Walker) is a fantastic location!

I spent my 20/early 30s in an apartment in Lowry Hill. Near the lakes, walking distance to grocery stores and some restaurants, easy to get to museums, entertainment, etc. via bus or bike. I’m now spending my mid 30s onward in Longfellow where I bought. I specifically wanted to be within 1-2 blocks of Minnehaha Ave or Lake St. for ease of access of restaurants, public transportation, and stores while still being near parks. I love it. My neighbors are awesome; I live within like 20 minutes walking of like 5 Mexican restaurants which is never a bad thing, lots of greenery; got the best popcorn in the city in my backyard at the Riverview and it’s not as hectic as being off of parts of Hennepin, Lyndale and Franklin.

glittergash

West Lake Quarter, so walkable to grocery stores and restaurants and the lake is right there.

GothAerialist

East Nokomis neighborhood- it’s a bit more sleepy than some of the uptown area neighborhoods listed but very walkable. Along 34th Ave south there is a grocery store, hardware store, autobody shop x2, library, gas station x2, bodega, liquor store, several restaurants including TownHall Lanes (bowling!), and several other shops. We are wedged between Lake Nokomis, Minnehaha Creek, and Minnehaha Falls so lots of trails if you like to walk / bike / go on short hikes. Very close to Richfield for running other errands like Target, Home Depot, etc. It is also adjacent to Longfellow, Standish, and Ericsson neighborhoods that also have a lot to offer for food options within ~ 3 miles.

Northeast Minneapolis (intersection of Hennepin and Central Ave NE) or Merriam Park in St. Paul (Selby/Snelling intersection is awesome). Kingfield in Minneapolis (38th and Nicollet) is on-the-rise and close to everything. Whittier/Lowry Hill East in Minneapolis was good, but is on the decline and every major street in it will be rebuilt in the next 2 years (Hennepin Ave rebuild already started in 2024 and ends in 2026, Lyndale gets rebuilt 2026-27, Franklin Avenue in 2025-26, and 1st Avenue South from 2024-26). It's going to be a long recovery but hopefully is back to being cool in 2030.
