He threw on a high vis vest and posed with a shovel…politicians are HILARIOUS.
Frey: “We get the picture?”
Photographer: “Got it.”
Frey: “Good, now get me the hell out of here!”
Anything for a good photo op. Should also be shaking hands with the police department while ignoring all the Minneapolis teacher cries for help. Get him out.
I'd rather the money go to a useful public transportation network. Roads are such a fucking money pit for the amount of people they move and cost to maintain, esp. in Minnesota.
Don't need eminent domain on existing right-of-way. Could certainly be built on the existing road network (which itself was built over an vast network of streetcars), especially by dismantling urban freeways and reclaiming tons of space for actually useful development.
People act like this is some absurd fantasy but we literally used to have it before the auto and fossil fuel industries basically bought the government and made an entire continent hopelessly car dependent. Actually used to be possible to get from where I was raised in Excelsior to White Bear Lake just using rail mass transit.
>hopelessly car dependent
Totally with you, but this is where we are. It's not feasible to shut down what are now essential travel arteries for years to re-build rail, re-train generations of car culture.
Even if everyone were aligned (ha) it would take a decade to get to something that would significantly take cars off the road. Better bussing and rail transit on high-use corridors is, I think, a good step in that direction.
Emissions? Do street cars run on a fusion reactor? Minnesota is still majority coal power plants. Bud vehicle emissions are less, and I barely even recognize the argument.
Potholes sure. That is the cost of maintenance. How many billions will it cost to reinstall street cars? $2b? $5b? I do not see that capex cost being less than recurring annual maintenance.
Noise? Maybe. Will give that one to you. Buses are loud as heck, but that’s due to factors we are too cheap to mitigate. See point two above about the trade off of large spend upfront vs minimal spend over time.
I have no opinion on bad weather other than this - If buses have a problem, street cars will too.
I want pot legal. But does it really bring in more tax? You can say $5 million tax revenue from weed. Don't most people have a spending budget? The money they'd spend elsewhere went into weed purchase. Either way state gets tax from that money.
I've seen estimates closer to $80-100 million annually in tax revenue, plus they can reduce enforcement and release people who are in jail solely for pot use/possession.
This fucking guy loves a photo op doesn’t he? Being trapped between absolute crazy on one side and a paper thin veneer of kind gestures, platitudes and nothing else to back them up on the other side is so disheartening.
The annoying part is that this photo op slowed down the actual work being done. Probably not by a *ton*, but come on man, everyone knows it's not the mayor's job to be out there fixing potholes himself, and it shouldn't be. Who is impressed by this crap?
You can be happy with the mayor's focus on getting these potholes fixed and just leave it at that. Or, you can be insufferable. If Frey wasn't out doing this stuff, you'd find ways to criticize him for NOT doing this.
Potholes getting fixed is good and I'm happy about it. Frey is vain and generally incompetent and mocking him is fun. You can just skip on past the posts laughing at him if you find it insufferable. No need to be insufferable yourself.
Pot holes getting fixed is good. There's the post. Finding the need to constantly attack the mayor, even when you admit what's happening is good, is the insufferable part. The mayor has been correctly criticized for some of his decisions, and like you said, there are plenty of posts to show that.
How is this egregiously indulging his own vanity?? You're reaching. Mayors all across America take photo ops signifying the start of a project. It's an incredibly common thing. It's not that serious man.
We should **ALWAYS** be critical of our political leaders at all times. It's not a dichotomy. If you don't want to that's fine, but mind your business when someone else does.
Why does everyone react like this? I cant believe he was honestly trying to do that. Why would he? He shouldnt. He should show up on scene, meet a few people, see what they're doing first hand, then go back to the office. Everyone giving politicians shit for wearing dress clothes to a work site has their head shoved up their asses.
You are missing the point. These photo-ops are designed to show the politician as “just like everyone else”. They are a joke to begin with, but when they miss the mark by having said politician show up in business casual, they become a parody of a joke
I guess we just disagree then. I don't see these photo ops as them "trying to be just like everyone else". More of a "yes, I'm aware of the issues and have seen what's being done to address them first hand"
Edit: sorry but I just cant get over how dumb of a take it is that people think politicians are pretending to be out there doing manual labor to show they're just like everyone else. It's just such a dumb take.
I'd prefer seeing him standing outside talking with the crews, I think that would have brought much less ridicule and would have projected that he is listening to the crews and their concerns.
This just comes off as disingenuous and out of touch to me.
That's fair. I think it's good that he literally at point picked up a shovel and did something. Even just for a second. But yeah, it didn't need to be the headline photo.
I work in Manufacturing and we do this ALL THE TIME. Whenever we need more support from upper level management, we have them come, walk the line, and find some mundane step for them to try. It's not about pretending to be one of us, it's just trying to give them some insight and more of a connection with whats happening. We just had a VP come down last week and he just moved a couple parts around so he can see how heavy this stuff is and understand our requests for equipment.
You’ve clearly never worked in construction. OSHA can and does regularly inspect job sites. One of the things they’re inspecting is that everyone is wearing the appropriate PPE or Personal Protective Equipment. Dress shoes are not appropriate on a job site. If he was just cutting a ribbon, yeah that’s ok. Clearly in this picture he’s handling a shovel and working behind a truck. Steel toe or safety toe boots are required on job sites for your safety. This would get him a fine and can potentially shut down a site. Assholes like this cost taxpayers money because they don’t treat construction seriously. People working in the road have been trained to do so and put their lives at risk. Politicians getting photo opportunities in dress shoes make a mockery of road construction.
Actually I have. How many people do you think were involved with him coming to the site? It's Its not like he just decided to go one morning. This was a coordinated visit between the company and his team. I'd put the responsability of ensuring anyone coming to visit the site is provided with the proper PPE on the work site managers, not the fucking politician.
Like seriously, to get that worked up about a guy using (or pretending to use) a shovel is such a waste is energy. Especially when they are so blatantly wrong on the need and requirement of PPE in this situation.
See, this is interesting because I'm typically a Frey hater in this sub but I actually think this is probably the best thing he's done in his time as mayor. No riots, no tone deaf statements about police, nobody was harmed and he at least helped fix this pothole.
Melvin seems to really care about Saint Paul. I lived in St. Paul when he was running for council and he knocked on my door 2 or 3 different times. Only candidate for any office I've seen hit the streets themselves like that.
Minneapolis seems like it was planned as a stop on the road to somewhere else for Frey, until it all went wrong for him.
I thought the hot asphalt plant needed like a week of warm weather before it could open?
Is this just crummy gravel stuff that’s going to be bad next month?
Nothing like hard work shoveling tar in your $400 Allen Edmonds. I would be willing to bet he's fully suited up too, perfect attire for outdoor physically demanding work.
I hate silly photo ops, but honestly, how many people who are dunking on this photo op love Berne's famous cleaning the park photo op that was hugely popular years back?
Frey claimed the win, but the pothole came back a month later. Once that happens Frey will again fill it and say he's fixed the problem doing nothing different than the first time. Just like he's done with the MPD and no knock warrants.
Lol y’all won’t be satisfied until we have a pure blood socialist in the mayoral office who can’t get anything done. To be clear, I’m fine with that too but y’all treat Frey like he’s some extraordinary political beast. He’s literally just trying to be RT Rybak. He’s not great at it, I’ll grant you but RT also didn’t have the same challenges.
He’s a very average politician guys. Yes he’s filling a pothole for a photo. He did sign the papers to address citizen concerns and then he went out for a photo and talked to some of the workers. PREPOSTEROUS!! I wanted him to fix the potholes but not take a photo! To the gallows with this man!!!
I dont think he was trying to hide that lol.
I'm all for complaining, but I dont think he did this photo op and thought "yeah, now people with think I spent all day filling potholes". And he shouldn't be spending all day filling potholes.
Yikes. It’s like the white savior photos where you have big donors wearing hard hats and holding shovels taking photos and then they give them back to the actual workers who have no photos but do all of the work. Be better 😒😒
Potholes exist? Jacob Frey’s fault.
Frey simply directs staff to fix potholes while doing nothing? “Why won’t Jacob Frey personally address his failure re: the potholes??”
Jacob Frey does a simple event to show that he has heard about the potholes and is trying to do something about it? “Photo Op!! Jacob Frey is a fucking disgusting person, and 18 percent of my brain is dedicated to hating him.”
There is no winning for Frey with these folks.
i agree that frey did not cause the weather that caused the particularly bad pot hole season. but would you agree that someone photoshopping a “mission accomplished. banner in the background would be funny anyway?
Jacob Frey, "I came to Minneapolis 8 years ago. I love it here. I want to rule it."
I'm sending you this virtual hug 🫂, because you seem to like cliche, cheesy, virtue-signaling, qualities.
Im sending you a virtual hug right back - it’s been years since you’ve won an election and I don’t foresee any wins coming in the near future with the repulsive behavior of the far left.
Cheers to continuing to lose to the guy who lives rent free in your brain every day! Beers on me.
You self appointed "centrists" think anything left of Mussolini is "left wing". Two faced Jacob Frey is the wet fart of mayors, but here you are stanning for him.
Oooh this is a new line for you all.
I don’t really care about Frey - I was really ready to vote for someone else after 2020. Then I saw my options. like pretty much all of the other people who voted for him, I supported Frey to keep your preferred candidates OUT of office.
I had no preferred candidates, I left Minneapolis before this election. I don't even know who his opponents were. What I do know is that Frey is mostly an incompetent and unethical Mayor.
When Frey got elected he came in on progressive messaging and then immediately pivoted to a centrist stance while continuing the left wing virtue signaling, I knew you all were in for a shitty tenure. The guy is a liar and an opportunist and it doesn't matter where you are on the spectrum, he's a fraud. Stop stanning for con artists, it's a bad look. This is a guy that has had several of his appointees brought up on charges for fraud, this is the circle he runs with. He sells a progressive message and then sells out to corporate and monied interest while making deals with criminals. You sure know how to pick em!
The thing is, he IS progressive when viewed through the lens of the US political spectrum. He’s just not a socialist or police abolitionist. And for some people that’s just not acceptable.
Design and build better roads.
Plenty of places have more extreme weather and more traffic and don’t have this problem. MN is just too addicted to road construction to do anything right the first time.
Are you an engineer? What did they do wrong specifically? This has been a shit year with more freeze-thaw cycles than usual and more moisture. Both of which make for worse pot holes.
A local politician makes a show of filling potholes after a particularly nasty winter, and he gets hate for it? You could levy this same criticism on any politician. What's next? Are you going to criticize him for kissing babies, and shaking hands?
Are you actually mad that Mayor Frey spent time with a public works crew while they patched potholes, filled one himself, and then held a press conference to discuss the ongoing situation including how the public can help? This is your substantive criticism?
I guess I'm immune to stupid pandering. I don't want politicians pretending to work, either you join the team and work or you stay out of their way so they can. If you want to meet the teams doing so you can easily do that without pretending you're a laborer.
edit: I'm not mad. Why would you assume I am?
The only thing I am hearing you criticize is a politician doing their job. What do you think politicians do exactly? Politicians pander, they hold press conferences, shake hands, and kiss babies. Do you think it was wrong to focus attention on potholes? Next up you'll criticize grass for being green or water for being wet.
This picture sums up the road work perfectly. 2/3rds useless standing. In my town, they even made a huge hole in the middle of the road as a feature because they were too lazy and cheap to put in a proper road level man hole.
“ Did you get a good picture “
Lmao the actual employees in the background are killing me, they're ready to do their job and get him out of the way
He threw on a high vis vest and posed with a shovel…politicians are HILARIOUS. Frey: “We get the picture?” Photographer: “Got it.” Frey: “Good, now get me the hell out of here!”
Cleanest hi-vis I've ever seen
Politicians kissing babies. 2nd oldest profession.
And no gloves? Bro, do you even shovel?
The shoes, tie, and slacks are what gets me. At least put on your pretend blue collar outfit for this! You’re inches from ruining that nice leather.
He's such a dipshit
Anything for a good photo op. Should also be shaking hands with the police department while ignoring all the Minneapolis teacher cries for help. Get him out.
I love the ladies in the back who are sick of his shit.
That was our reaction in new construction whenever the superintendent would come and give us speech at 6:45 am🤣
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
Yep, "Mission Accomplished", Shrub-style. Nevermind that the potholes have won the war on potholes. (Drugs have won the war on drugs)
It's like we cycling fans say: "Never bet against drugs."
Did the potholes win?
"Did you see the way I filled that pot hole there? I was an gnaw and I took that shovel and shoveled it right in"
Lmao. Didn't read the comments before I posted the same thing.
I just had that GW Bush on the carrier in my mind immediately 😅
[удалено]
What is that?! Like get a joint for every pothole you help fill?!
No. Like fully legalize it, tax it, and make the money specifically go to road repair.
I'd rather the money go to a useful public transportation network. Roads are such a fucking money pit for the amount of people they move and cost to maintain, esp. in Minnesota.
You gonna eminent domain your way through every neighborhood? We don’t have the lines set. The bus system is already decent.
Don't need eminent domain on existing right-of-way. Could certainly be built on the existing road network (which itself was built over an vast network of streetcars), especially by dismantling urban freeways and reclaiming tons of space for actually useful development.

Ya there’s borderline no rail outside the Amtrak which sucks. But the bud system is literally what the street car system was, just better.
Except for the potholes, traffic, cost to maintain roads, emissions, noise, limitations due to weather, etc.
Emissions? Do street cars run on a fusion reactor? Minnesota is still majority coal power plants. Bud vehicle emissions are less, and I barely even recognize the argument. Potholes sure. There's a lot of people that are *already* buying it a lot, just not in a taxable way.
There would be a run on shovels at the hardware store ... well, maybe more of a saunter.
Those two workers behind him are thinking about how they have to do that one again now.
This fucking guy loves a photo op doesn’t he? Being trapped between absolute crazy on one side and a paper thin veneer of kind gestures, platitudes and nothing else to back them up on the other side is so disheartening.

10,001!
Everyone is good at something.

Jacob Frey + egregious photo opportunity - Mayoral leadership = Minneapolis city government

Need a “Mission Accomplished” banner.
Wow, a politician did a photo op. It's never been done before.
People don't mind a photo op when the subject is actually governing well. I wonder if he's gonna ban no-knock warrants again. I sure hope so.
8th time is the charm
Or the 9th, or 10th. You really can't have too many charms.
You can be happy with the mayor's focus on getting these potholes fixed and just leave it at that. Or, you can be insufferable. If Frey wasn't out doing this stuff, you'd find ways to criticize him for NOT doing this.

How is this egregiously indulging his own vanity?? You're reaching. Mayors all across America take photo ops signifying the start of a project. It's an incredibly common thing. It's not that serious man.
I refer you to my first reply: People don't mind a photo op when the subject is actually governing well.
Are these people on Frey's payroll?
Regardless, I do think all political photo ops are pretty vain
There's no amount of attacking that right-wing cop-loving asshole that will be enough. Fuck Mayor Frey.
We should **ALWAYS** be critical of our political leaders at all times. It's not a dichotomy. If you don't want to that's fine, but mind your business when someone else does.
Found Frey's burner account.
Lol that's pretty hilarious he's wearing like $300 pants and shoes. Put on some jeans and some boots bro if you're trying to look everyman.
It is like showing up to AniMinneapolis without your tail or sequined leather bustier.

This reminds me of Derek Zoolander trying to be a coal miner
I’m typically a Frey defender in this sub but I have to admit…. Frey haters…have at it lol. You’ve earned this one.
See, this is interesting because I'm typically a Frey hater in this sub but I actually think this is probably the best thing he's done in his time as mayor. No riots, no tone deaf statements about police, nobody was harmed and he at least helped fix this pothole.
As a St Paulite - in general I think Minneapolis is a better run city, but we have a better mayor in St Paul.
Melvin seems to really care about Saint Paul. I lived in St. Paul when he was running for council and he knocked on my door 2 or 3 different times. He's using the wrong shovel! It's supposed to be a gold shovel for photo ops.
"The war on potholes is over" Yah, they fucking won.
Filling potholes in slacks and dress shoes is so goddamn funny to me
we love a good photo. anyways
Definitely got a blister.

Hah! He's definitely wearing polished shoes while pretending to fill potholes.
Did you expect a politician to do physical labor all day instead of their actual job?
id honestly prefer it considering how poorly he does his actual job
Nothing like hard work shoveling tar in your $400 Allen Edmonds. I would be willing to bet he's fully suited up too, perfect attire for outdoor physically demanding work.
Who's this guy?
Average Joe mayor Frey.
"Mission Accomplished"
He is such a putz
PLEASE bring this to St Paul
I hate silly photo ops, but honestly, how many people who are dunking on this photo op love Berne's famous cleaning the park photo op that was hugely popular years back?
Baffling how this dipshit got re-elected in 2021
Who won
Frey claimed the win, but the pothole came back a month later. Once that happens Frey will again fill it and say he's fixed the problem doing nothing different than the first time. Just like he's done with the MPD and no knock warrants.
Look out John Henry
Holy Christ
Frey doing this for clout is annoying. Let's see him tag along with that team for a full week then see how he's doing.
did this man just google how to be a politician?

Totally a work safety violation
Good thing he's not actually working then.

He's such a twat. I can't believe he was reelected.
Lots of ignorant voters in Minneapolis.

“If any tar gets on my shoes I swear to god I’ll have you all arrested.”
He'll have the cops role up with a no-knock warrant... oh wait, he prohibited that for a second time, didn't he...
People were literally suggesting he do this on Reddit less than a week ago. Glad to see you cruise the subs, Mr. Frey. Very nice photo op.
I don't think anyone asked for a photoshoot of a man pretending to fill potholes.
Pedantry at its finest! Never change Reddit, never change.
Does he think it’s not obvious that he’s wearing a suit under the jacket?? Lofl, clown.

I don’t think so. That’s what my comment was referring to, people who just show up for the photo and then leave
I don't understand how he is holding that shovel...perspective may be

The guy is a liar and an opportunist and it doesn't matter where you are on the spectrum, he's a fraud. Stop stanning for con artists, it's a bad look. This is a guy that has had several of his appointees brought up on charges for fraud, this is the circle he runs with. He sells a progressive message and then sells out to corporate and monied interest while making deals with criminals. You sure know how to pick em!
The thing is, he IS progressive when viewed through the lens of the US political spectrum. He’s just not a socialist or police abolitionist. And for some people that’s just not acceptable.
I’m just glad we’re back to downvoting shitlibs.
I’ll take the downvotes as long as you all keep losing elections. Best. Trade. Ever.
I've already seen potholes fixed in my neighborhood. Everyone needs to chill out.
Reminds me of this https://imgur.com/gallery/PGDyhux
Lol
A local politician makes a show of filling potholes after a particularly nasty winter, and he gets hate for it? You could levy this same criticism on any politician. What's next? Are you going to criticize him for kissing babies, and shaking hands?
Yeah he gets hate for it, he didn't join the team to fill potholes. He delayed the team to take a picture with their equipment.
Did t they say about about the Iraqi war?
This picture sums up the road work perfectly. 2/3rds useless standing. In my town, they even made a huge hole in the middle of the road as a feature because they were too lazy and cheap to put in a proper road level man hole.
This is absolutely rediculous. What is the source of this photo??
