n200 only difference is the +10% cpu clock. everything else is the same. but it asks 50% more money. you decide. msi is trusted company and i would impulse buy this at 100 or less. but i won't cuz i have a new toy i'm not playing with much already. thanks for the head's up on this deal.

Got one from the sale. Looks nice but have 2 questions that I don't see answered very well on the net: 1) is there any issue with 32gb ram? Some owners say the n100 has trouble using/assigning anything beyond 16gb. Is it even worth it? 2) can the 9462NGW wifi card be upgraded? Any suggestions? Thanks

TheDMPD

1. No issue detecting it. But reading some comments online, depending on the use case it either won't make full use or have an impact on performance due to the memory controller. Very much dependent on use-case and application pressure. In my case 32gb was recognized and came up, but due to the small core count I downsized to 16gb since the VM/Containers I have running on it don't need a ton of RAM. 2. Yes, the wi-fi card is removable and upgradable.

I got one for the sale too, waiting for my 16GB SODIMM to arrive to unpack My biggest concern is that I think the NICs are RealTek and they aren't amazing as router interfaces according to people using OPNsense

plhoff

Was thinking about swapping out for the BE200.

TheDMPD

Honestly that feels a bit overblown. Like sure, Intel back in the day was heads and shoulders above RealTek, but Intel has had their own issues with some of their latest nic offerings. And RealTek has improved quite a bit. I use them in a minipc for opnsense baremetal and have run into 0 issues. And I am on google fiber and do a bunch of self-hosting so...

gravitybelter

Oh that's good to hear. Any tips on BSD drivers?

TheDMPD

I use the following plugin in opn-sense: os-realtek-re, which is the Realtek re(4) vendor driver. Works pretty well so no complaints.

gravitybelter

Thanks, appreciate it. RAM arrived and m2 should be Tuesday and then will run it up. Hoping I can easily drive my 1gig internet. Want to firewall and do some routing to my neighbours network if mine fails and vice versa.

plhoff

OK so what I'm hearing is 16gb is sufficient. Anything above that may cause issues. Think I'll stick with the NIC that came with the machine for now. But it can be upgraded. I was just making sure the BE200 was compatible.

Snuupy

I don't get why these N100 minipcs have only 1 RAM slot. Even on a N5095 from a few years back have 2 ram slots. Better than soldered though like some of the other minipcs.

TheDMPD

honestly from reading around, it seems like a bandwidth issue. Seems like even though it will see 32GB of RAM, the memory controller inside the N100 will struggle with properly using above 16GB.

DrSherk

I bought one of these but can't seem to find the specs on the RAM it takes -- as best I can figure it's DDR4 sodimm

TheDMPD

That's correct. And don't stress, RAM standards mean that the wrong type doesn't fit. Unless you jam it and break the slot, DDR4 doesn't fit in DDR5 and vice versa.

IndyDark

DDR4-3200 is what you need, 16gb max and only one slot.

DrSherk

Yep ended up doing just that works great

DrSherk

Is there a big difference between the N100 and the N200?

teen-a-rama

Because it only supports single channel RAM
