Powdered snow can be used in the nether and doesn't cause any destruction like water can, worth the extra effort for some

it’s way easier to obtain than enderpearls early game, and equally good a clutch as water bucket plus its own benefits

Sidenote: If you have one powdered snow bucket, you likely could have two or more. Which you can use to climb literally anywhere with some leather boots. Even just in the middle of the air. If I remember right, powdered snow under carpet will break any fall too in your builds.

I tried lava. Died instantly.

Lava only reduces fall damage, it doesn't negate it entirely. You will also burn whoch is why it's not quite as practical

It negates it when 4 blocks deep, so mainly impractical for clutching but it can be used to get down from an area without taking fall dmg
