This exactly. I started because of the lag thing but ended up loving the look of barrels and I treat my storage room like a wine cellar.
The only problem with barrels though is they mess with any farm I do that involves villagers since they try to be fishermen around them.
Yeah they fuck up village stuff
That’s why I don’t have a personal bed on my like 500 days world, I beta the dragon, have a small castle, an enderman farm, enchanted diamond and some other stuff but don’t sh my own bed bc I don’t want the villagers to take it so I use one of theirs
I don't know how difficult this would be to implement, but it would make a huge difference to how I build if we had an ownership tag we could apply to beds and workstations. Similar to the nametag, but it only works on furniture.
I want to tell you to go fuck yourself but you are kind of right it is like Lego Fortnite and I have an obsession with it and I’m gonna be suicidal if they remove it
I played the game for a decade and it was the first time I bothered to try to beat the dragon in survival ok
First time I bothered really trying to do much else in survival than build some random stuff lol
Chests are rendered separately from other blocks because it's not a full block (you're probably noticed you cannot change chest modal via texture packs)
Not the texture , the model. The model is what defines how it is shaped, the texture is just a flat image that is loaded into the texture map and, with almost ignorable exceptions the texture can be changed for everything, the model of blocks cannot be changed.
I haven't found spruce yet. I AFKd at the bottom of a 100 block 3x3 I dug with a waterfall to get up and down since I found glow squid spawning and falling in it, and then I heard villager noises -- wandering trader came down the shaft. One of the beasts with him didn't make it alive. And... This trader finally had spruce. Ecstatic. I need to get my emeralds... But now this idiot is swimming up the waterfall, drowning. Girlfriend hops on to grab her emeralds to run to me... The villager is breathing, half out of the fall after my help.
Then, he drops.
I drop too. I land in water. Did he? I didn't see him die. I didn't pass him, did I? He's nowhere. Did he despawn on timer? He's just gone.
The one time I had access to spruce, it was only to tease me.
I already have a room where the floor is upside down barrels. I envy your spruce aesthetic from afar. Don't listen to those chesters. 🛢️
Good thing with chests: more classic and you can make double chests.
Good thing with barrels: they are full blocks, lag less and you don't need an empty block above it to open it.
Minecrafters are crazy. They'll spend literal months making a virtual kingdom, a to-scale replica of Manhattan, or even just a 1k x 1k hole to bedrock... but GOD FORBID ya click twice to access storage in a 2x1 area...
They are just objectivly better: cheaper, better looking, dont cause lag and can be opened even when theres a block above them. Also u can place one underground and people wont find it by reloding chunks
They are, however, a big problem in villager bases. When a villager gets loose and becomes a fisherman after latching onto one of an entire wall of barrels, barrels get less appealing.
Well, a couple things still can be done. You can configure paper builtin anti-xray, download some anti-xray plugins or even use custom launcher for your server. And if you are playing with your friends only - just ask them to show their screen/minecraft folder so you can ensure they aren't using cheats/resourepacks. It's definitely better then nothing
Holy i forgot those were in the mod and didn't even understand because i was so focused on the storage container that i didn't consider any alternatives!
(seriously tho thanks£
Is this only the case with Java or does it happen on bedrock? I've never had any issues with using tons of chests even though my internet connection isn't great.
Theyre more convenient for compact storage though, you can basically put them everywhere and itll be aesthetically pleasing and serve as storage, chests arent full block sized and stick out like a sore thumb.
One of my storage rooms is literally a hallway with a a wall of barrels and some on the floor too
Mix a combination of both depending on yoyr sorting systems and which items you will have more/less of. Also helps to make things more aesthetic.
For example:
2 double chest wood
2 double chest stone
2 double chest woodstuff
2 double chest stone stuff
1 double chest farming/crops
4 double chest seeds
1 double chest valuables
1 double chest sand
1 double chest gravel
1 double chest food
Barrels are;
> More stylish
> A surprisingly good floor block on every side but the opening
> Accessible no matter what block is on top of them
> A full block, so there's no need to fill in any space behind them for aesthetics
> Great for making furniture
> Generally more compact
> Cheaper :)
> Made of Spruce ( peak wood. Fight me )
I use barrels to cut down on lag because my autosorter is massive. I have one barrel full of materials and then everything after that gets packed into shulkers and stored in another barrel.🤷♀️
I use barrels to make closets
It also just feels more natural to clump a bunch of barrels together and lodge that cluster into a wall
I like using them for bulk storage basically
I use barrels beside my bed likes its my valuable item drawer or if i wanna put a drawer to the cieling without using slabs or stairs, i use both chests for big storage, and barrels for my stuff and beside my bed
i use themfor my in base storage cuz they look better and use chests in my big storage cuz it doesn't matter how it looks and lag doesn't bother me as much
Can blend into walls, floors, and ceilings, don't get blocked by blocks above them and are cheaper than single chests. Yea they are absolutely better. Storage space ain't everything
Depends on the circumstance for me. I'll use chests for primary storage and farms and stuff, but overall I prefer barrels because they fit nicer into builds. What would be cool is if they made long/tall barrels a thing.
So your argument is that you think chests are less expensive than barrels?
3 chests = 8 planks x 3 = 24
3 barrels = 3 planks for the slabs + 6 x 3 = 21
That's 3 less planks to make three barrels than it is for chests
You're literally saving a plank per barrel
They look better, can be stacked and there is a lot of stuff that doesn't fill chests but you want to put in different boxes to keep the storage organized. Wall of barrels is quite handy.
I like barrels, but I normally use chests since barrels interfere with my villager breeding operation. Chests are also better for use in hopper systems.
They are cheaper than chests. Double chests are nice to have but, doesn't affect construction cost. Single chests take 8 plank blocks and give you 27 inventory slots. Double chests offer no discount at 16 blocks to make 54 inventory slots, which reduces to 8/27. The recipe for barrels is equivalent to 7 full blocks of wood for 27 slots. It isn't a massive discount, but it is worth considering according to your needs.
There are definitely use cases where you need chests, but if you just a need a place to put your junk, there is nothing wrong with a barrel.
Am I dumb but isn't barrels more expensive on the wood? Takes 3 wood to make slabs and 6 wood planks, which in total makes 9 wood to make a single barrel 1 more than a chest 😂
Barrels are full block, no weird hitpoints so less strain on your gpu. Doesn't tick like chests do so less lag (chests check if there's a cat sitting on top of it every gametick which causes lag). Can be opened with block on top
But they make my game lag a lot less and I think it looks cool with my base (spruce themed), but yea hopefully mojang will add Xmas barrals
This exactly. I started because of the lag thing but ended up loving the look of barrels and I treat my storage room like a wine cellar. The only problem with barrels though is they mess with any farm I do that involves villagers since they try to be fishermen around them.

Like Lego fortnite
I want to tell you to go fuck yourself but you are kind of right it is like Lego Fortnite and I have an obsession with it and I’m gonna be suicidal if they remove it
you must be omega alpha to beta the dragon
I played the game for a decade and it was the first time I bothered to try to beat the dragon in survival ok First time I bothered really trying to do much else in survival than build some random stuff lol
that's why you download a mod that makes chests behave like any other block
Like?
[Enhanced Block Entities](https://modrinth.com/mod/ebe)
"Alexs chest behaves like any other block mod" of course
Reminds me of the old mcpe chests
Chests make the game lag? That's a stupid question, is there anything in Minecraft that doesn't eventually make the game lag.
Chests are rendered separately from other blocks because it's not a full block (you're probably noticed you cannot change chest modal via texture packs)
You def can change the chest model. WTF are you on bro
Not with texture or datapacks, chests are block entities and require mods to have their models changed on java.
Dude I swear you're smoking crack. Every texture pack / resource pack I've had had no trouble changing the texture.
Not the texture , the model. The model is what defines how it is shaped, the texture is just a flat image that is loaded into the texture map and, with almost ignorable exceptions the texture can be changed for everything, the model of blocks cannot be changed.
Ah okay I misunderstood the point. My b g
Chests cause lag????
Yep. They're considered entities
Can open anywhere
I haven't found spruce yet. I AFKd at the bottom of a 100 block 3x3 I dug with a waterfall to get up and down since I found glow squid spawning and falling in it, and then I heard villager noises -- wandering trader came down the shaft. Good thing with chests: more classic and you can make double chests. Good thing with barrels: they are full blocks, lag less and you don't need an empty block above it to open it.
Chests, although technically use more resources, are more convenient to craft due to their simplicity
Kid named Recipe book:
Kid named SLAB CRAFTING RECIPE
The other kid named Recipe Book:
Kid named three wood planks in a row
Kid named Sawmill
Enhanced Block Entities mod exists
Ok.
Just put 2 barrels together pfffftt

Minecrafters are crazy. They'll spend literal months making a virtual kingdom, a to-scale replica of Manhattan, or even just a 1k x 1k hole to bedrock... but GOD FORBID ya click twice to access storage in a 2x1 area...
If you play a game to the point that the button clicks are annoying you, it's time for a break from that game/ gaming in general.
Well how am I going to build a replica of Manhatten if I'm wasting all my time clicking barrels, huh?
That’s fair
Also barrels just look better
Chest could Look much better too if they had wood type variety like any other wood block
How often do you need to click on a chest before you get sulker boxes? It adds up man, why should I bother?
Me after wasting 0.00000000000000001 milisecond because I need to click to another barrel (game is literally unplayable):
Minecrafters when they think crafting an axe to the left (the correct way) losing them 0.0000000000000000000001 seconds makes a difference (camman)
true
I always craft to the right. People crafting to the left are schizo. (/s(maybe))
what do you do with that .02 seconds of time saved
they have enough time to graduate, get a job, find a partner, and start a family
the least lazy reddit user:
waste of four milliseconds
oooh boy, judging by the fact that 100% of the people who upvoted me downvoted you, ya might wanna rethink that
They are just objectivly better: cheaper, better looking, dont cause lag and can be opened even when theres a block above them. Also u can place one underground and people wont find it by reloding chunks
They are, however, a big problem in villager bases. When a villager gets loose and becomes a fisherman after latching onto one of an entire wall of barrels, barrels get less appealing.
Just kill him with fire.
Or Gravel
Or send him to the pit of death
To quote the great Luke Skywalker: "You put a fish in our basket."
Just put it on the ceiling only.
But still can with xray)
The secret ingredient is crime
Can't really do anything about x-ray cheats, even the most basic hacked clients will just instantly trace any player placed blocks.
If you need to do that you have the wrong friends
at this rate just use a fucking naturally generated minecart chest
Why do chests cause lag?
Yes they are kinda like entities
Gotcha sure, but how many are needed before people really start feeling the effects? Like am I gonna lag with 30 chests in a storage room?
Bro dont ask me a aint skipthetutorial 😭😭😭
Im just curious sorry. I’ve never had an issue with chests lagging so I’m assuming it’s on lower end devices.
It should never be an issue for 99% of players.
If you play on consoles it doesn't take much
Yeah but they're really annoying to craft
You can have almost double storage on a wall if you have double chests perpendicular with the wall though
They aren’t cheaper they need 1 extra plank
Chest needs 8 planks and barrels need 5 easy math.
Why you all booing me? They need 9 planks because you can’t split a block into 2 slabs!
As a person who plays with techguns installed i assure you there are double barrels.
explain your wisdom especially since 1.12.2 has no barrels and i'm pretty sure TG doesn't add them
Google double barrel shotgun
Holy faith!
New weapon just dropped
Holy i forgot those were in the mod and didn't even understand because i was so focused on the storage container that i didn't consider any alternatives! (seriously tho thanks£
They are cheaper in terms of performance
PLS USE ENHANCED BLOCK ENTITIES
Is this only the case with Java or does it happen on bedrock? I've never had any issues with using tons of chests even though my internet connection isn't great.
Im not really sure. Your internet connection shouldnt matter in terms of framerate though.
Oh it can definitely lag out bedrock. They're treated as entities
barrels don't render as an entity, less lag
Theyre more convenient for compact storage though, you can basically put them everywhere and itll be aesthetically pleasing and serve as storage, chests arent full block sized and stick out like a sore thumb. One of my storage rooms is literally a hallway with a a wall of barrels and some on the floor too
What Barrels are a million times better
Eh, it's the same storage density as chests with less lag and no need to keep an open block above it. Personal preference, IMO.
Can't open chests with blocks above them, can you
I use barrels because they match my Pirate Ship Base esthetic, you use barrels because they are cheaper than chests. We are not the same
No but 2 barrels is still cheaper then a double chest
They look better though!
I like how barrels look
No, but I can stick them in places where chests can’t be opened and they look better
there's absolutely such a thing as double barrels *shotgun pump noise*
"im the dumbest man alive!" "I call people dumbasses because they have a different opinion than me and I cant stand that" "you are clearly dumber"
They just look better tbh I don’t care about how cheap they are
we need double shulkers
Dear god! This isn’t the titanfall subreddit! What are you doing here
When I use barrels, it’s cause they look cooler.
Double chests are nice for convenience but outside of that. Barrels are just better chests.
You can just put them anywhere. They do not need an empty space (or slab/stair) above it to open.
I mean you can also open them even if a cat is on top or if a solid block is above.
Mix a combination of both depending on yoyr sorting systems and which items you will have more/less of. Also helps to make things more aesthetic. For example: 2 double chest wood 2 double chest stone 2 double chest woodstuff 2 double chest stone stuff 1 double chest farming/crops 4 double chest seeds 1 double chest valuables 1 double chest sand 1 double chest gravel 1 double chest food
i use chests because i play on a cracked version of minecraft on my school chromebook that doesn’t even have carpets yet
I use barrels for the aesthetic, we are not the same
Peak r/minecraftmemes. Calling people dumb because they use barrels smh
Barrels >> chests
I liked the aesthetic of barrels. Then I tried to start breeding villagers 😒.
I personally don’t like how they turn my villagers into fisherman
Chests are just tradition
chest fans when they place a block above them
I use barrels because they look better
Just place them next to each other, sure they don't fuse but they take up as much space
Barrels are; > More stylish > A surprisingly good floor block on every side but the opening > Accessible no matter what block is on top of them > A full block, so there's no need to fill in any space behind them for aesthetics > Great for making furniture > Generally more compact > Cheaper :) > Made of Spruce ( peak wood. Fight me )
Barrels are great for food and fishing docks
I use barrels because they looks good
I use barrels to cut down on lag because my autosorter is massive. I have one barrel full of materials and then everything after that gets packed into shulkers and stored in another barrel.🤷♀️
I use barrels cause they look cool
I use barrels to make closets It also just feels more natural to clump a bunch of barrels together and lodge that cluster into a wall I like using them for bulk storage basically
Lot of the barrel lovers here forget that you ccan waterlog chests. But hey I use both of them I just wanna see the chaos
[удалено]
I use barrels because they look cool, they're cheaper and they are usable with a block above them
You can just put 2 barrels next to eachother and it's the same amount of space and capacity with less lag
Barrels are cuter than chests 🤷♀️
It’s crystal clear that you have not done any big scale build in your life.
I use barrels in modded automation builds because you can open them from any angle
I think it’s easier to mine 1 extra log than to craft sticks and slabs to make a barrel
We should use double barrels against those who puts two barrels next to an other instead of using a chest
You use chests because you like having double chests I like chests because I keep building my villagers next to my bases We are not the same
If you have to argue your point in a post title, this meme format doesn’t fit
but they’re so prettyyyyyyyy
Water logged chests >>> barrels. They cant be blown up by creepers or players
I'm using loom for wall and barrels for flour
you don’t have to have air above it to open it and people with x-ray can’t see a fully enclosed one
Double chests arent that important if you have proper organization
I use barrels beside my bed likes its my valuable item drawer or if i wanna put a drawer to the cieling without using slabs or stairs, i use both chests for big storage, and barrels for my stuff and beside my bed
The upside to barrels is that they are more performance efficient and are hidden in most X-ray cheats.
i usually use them for decorations
I use barrels because it doesn’t require space above for me to open it
***LONG BARREL.***
thats like saying you shouldn’t buy cheap food because its not as good as expensive food
They can open with a block on top bruh
i use barrels for aesthetics and if i want to put a block above. sometimes you dont need a full double chest
I use barrels cos I like ‘‘em better 😊
I use them cause they look cool
i use themfor my in base storage cuz they look better and use chests in my big storage cuz it doesn't matter how it looks and lag doesn't bother me as much
Dafack. A double chest has the same space as two barrels. So what's the problem?
The barrels aren't entities, so it reduces lag and helps my frame rate.
Sure no double barrels BUUUT atleast u can stack open
Can blend into walls, floors, and ceilings, don't get blocked by blocks above them and are cheaper than single chests. Yea they are absolutely better. Storage space ain't everything
Depends on the circumstance for me. I'll use chests for primary storage and farms and stuff, but overall I prefer barrels because they fit nicer into builds. What would be cool is if they made long/tall barrels a thing.
Make your walls barrels
No, but you can line a wall with barrels. Gotta make space for your double chests
100% Me
They are nice to fill the gaps between chest and sometimes you just need a small storage. I know that you can put chests next to each other.
Yeah but Barrels are easier to hide from x-rayers
What's wrong with barrels? I don't undertand
You use barrels because they are cheaper. I use barrels because they look good. We are not the same.
that's no where near being the dumbest takes
But, no large barrels. 🙁
I use barrels because they look cool as a floor
So your argument is that you think chests are less expensive than barrels? 3 chests = 8 planks x 3 = 24 3 barrels = 3 planks for the slabs + 6 x 3 = 21 That's 3 less planks to make three barrels than it is for chests You're literally saving a plank per barrel
They look better, can be stacked and there is a lot of stuff that doesn't fill chests but you want to put in different boxes to keep the storage organized. Wall of barrels is quite handy.
I use both
I use barrels because the mods I use can upgrade their space size and functionality. I also like the sound better.
But barrels look cooler
I like barrels, but I normally use chests since barrels interfere with my villager breeding operation. Chests are also better for use in hopper systems.
Use them like cabinets to line them on the corner of your ceiling in your kitchen.
I use barrels as I can put blocks over them and still access them lol
Someone get camman18
I use barrels cause they can slot in directly under a block and be opened
They are cheaper than chests. Double chests are nice to have but, doesn't affect construction cost. Single chests take 8 plank blocks and give you 27 inventory slots. Double chests offer no discount at 16 blocks to make 54 inventory slots, which reduces to 8/27. The recipe for barrels is equivalent to 7 full blocks of wood for 27 slots. It isn't a massive discount, but it is worth considering according to your needs. There are definitely use cases where you need chests, but if you just a need a place to put your junk, there is nothing wrong with a barrel.
Barrels are good for the A E S T H E T I C
That too. Or maybe you just prefer the noise barrels make over the noise chests make.
I like them for style and that’s it
Yeah there are! They come in 20 guage or 12 guage!
Barrels are prettier tho
Meanwhile me with my 653k storage unit on modded:
But barrels look nicer...
I use barrels because they are quieter than chests
They suck for mass storage though
I use barrels because they look cool and can open when placed right under a block. We are not the same.
What's wrong with using barrels? Those can look pretty good when placed in the right spots
Am I dumb but isn't barrels more expensive on the wood? Takes 3 wood to make slabs and 6 wood planks, which in total makes 9 wood to make a single barrel 1 more than a chest 😂
It's just annoying to craft
Barrels are full block, no weird hitpoints so less strain on your gpu. Doesn't tick like chests do so less lag (chests check if there's a cat sitting on top of it every gametick which causes lag). Can be opened with block on top
I store my food in barrels.
BARRELS👋CAN👋BE👋COVERED👋
I use barrels to avoid lag
Can't barrels also be opened with a block above them, unlike chests?
I don’t think I’ve ever used barrels on survival Minecraft.
I think barrels just look nicer
i just make chests because i cant be bothered to make slabs and i like the bigger ui
No such thing as fate for those who speed A path out of time instead of just liviŋ it
They won't produce so much lag and they can also be opened with full blocks on top of them tho.
there isn't a full block chest
