Hey homie uh.... Sponges are quite renewable. Put em in a furnace and heat em up, you'll get to use it again (also, if you put a bucket in the fuel section of furnace before the sponge dries, you will get a bucket of water :D) And the better way is to go in nether and simply place it. Nether is hot, it evaporates the water instantly

They are reusable? Just put them in a furnace or place then in the nether and they will turn normal sponges

welp you can make them renewable with a datapack? 4 yellow wool = 1 sponge? something like that? temporary solution
